Hound Association Of Scotland

Breed: Whippet

Hound Association of Scotland 12th April 2025

Whippets

It seems an age ago I was invited for this appointment, and I have been so looking forward to it as I admire the Breed. Balance, type and movement are key for me and the competition between these quality exhibits was very pleasing if not difficult in some of the classes, particularly Open Dog. Dentition generally good, a few that verged on being slightly overshot due to weaker underjaw, 3 or 4 would benefit from a dental clean, and a couple with missing teeth & there were a few with paler eyes than preferred. Overall, the entry was one of quality & the majority shown in absolute peak condition. My thanks to HAOS, to my stewards Linda and especially Alison, most of all to the exhibitors who came along with their very elegant Whippets making the whole experience so worthwhile.

Minor Puppy Dog (3)

1. Scholfield’s Bowdonia No Way Jose at Runforest, delightful pale fawn/brindle at his first show, super smooth outline topped off with a very pleasing head, good skull & dark oval eye, neck blended well into shoulder, super front, good curvy underline & topline, fine coat, oval well-padded feet & balanced construction gave him the best movement in the class.

2. Morland & Yeates & Winters Zoraden Midlife Crisis very attractive fawn, good flat skull, slight stop & dark expressive eyes, nicely conditioned throughout, good depth & topline, balanced angulation & another with good feet, nice, controlled action moving.

3. Mallinson’s Edenwhip Oregano

Puppy Dog (8)

Super hotly contested class of youngsters with little between them.

1. Luther & Buckland’s Tervanty Dragon Master, brindle whose overall type, construction & movement carried him through this class, no exaggerations just lovely balance, curves in the right places coupled with good muscle tone & body strength. Covered the ground with easy sound stride & good front action which clinched his placing. Best Puppy was short-listed in the Puppy Group & then won Best Special Beginners in Show, great start for him.

2. Poole & Winkley-Balmer & Winkley’s Shulune Thrills N Spills for Edenwhip, attractive pale brindle/fawn with white markings, elegant throughout, great for size, loved his head shape good flat skull, rose shaped fine ears carried well, good eye placement, lean muzzle & good bite, it was a very close decision, strong in front with correct width, good oval feet well padded, good muscle tone & strength to his body with balanced angles, very nice prospect & one that I have no doubt will do well.

3. Howgate & Hull’s Palmik Never Too Late

Junior Dog (5)

1. Perkins & Van Der Schaaf’s Silkridge Black Caviar, black with white markings, super elegant, classy & shown in gleaming condition, strikes a lovely outline showing off his curves well, held his outline on the move & strode out with good forward action & drive from the rear.

2. Hutchinson’s Zenobia Just An Illusion with Sweetaurora JW, elegant pale brindle/fawn, has a refined head, ideally would prefer a slightly stronger jaw, however he is a shapely youngster with good depth, muscle-tone & good underline curving up well, moved well enough here to secure his placing.

3. Beattie-Nash’s Railfield Rainstorm

Yearling Dog (3)

1. Short, Short & Fletcher’s Ir Ch Collooney We’ve Got This, pale brindle/white quality boy, superb outline & full of elegance, lovely lean head, good rose shaped fine ears, neck blending very nicely into his shoulder-line, balanced angles front & rear & is a very good mover, has a great deal of promise, liked him.

2. Beattie-Nash’s Railfield Rainstorm, brindle/white and is an attractive exhibit, slightly finer all through but struck a nice curvy outline when stacked, and used his construction well on the move, still needs to fill out & mature, nicely handled.

3. Salkeld & Graham’s Dalerafenn River of Dreams

Novice Dog (4)

1. Howgate & Hull’s Palmik Never Too Late, lovely handsome fawn youngster with elegance & super construction coupled with nice flat muscle & strength throughout, lovely balance of head & good oval eye finishes him off, gliding around with good forehand low reach, excellent drive from the rear, accurate mover, pleasure to watch.

2. Luther & Buckland’s Bohosoul The Crow, slightly larger fawn/white with good appeal, nice flat skull & good muzzle with slight stop, scissor bite, good arched neck, nice in front with bladed bone, good feet, depth & underline, well ribbed with graceful topline, not as positive moving.

3. Martin’s Crosscop Waterloo

Graduate (5)

1. Howgate & Hull’s Palmik Never Too Late (see report previous class)

2. Brooks Collooney For Your Eyes Only JW, handsome brindle/white that really appealed; super balance with a lovely handsome head & good expression, nice for size, good fill in front, shoulders well placed, good depth & brisket, nicely angled rear with good second thigh strength, slightly unsettled here but moved with soundness, nice prospect, beautifully handled.

3. Ballantyne’s Cobyco Catch Twenty Two

Post Graduate (6)

1. Winkley-Balmer & Winkley’s Edenwhip Call Me At Night, fawn with white markings, nicely handled to get the best from this balanced lad, would prefer a darker eye to enhance his elegant head, is a good curvy shape with good depth, ribs & topline, strong in front & rear, moved with precision & forehand low reach.

2. Burton’s Ballenbreich Harris JW, similar in size, pale brindle/fawn nice exhibit, good strength throughout, nicely conditioned with good depth & strong topline, prefer slightly more return, not quite the balance of the winner.

3. Searle & Rawlinson’s Reffton Tibalt at Whipsearle JW (Imp Esp)

Mid-Limit Dog (7)

1. Poole, Morris & Waddell’s Falconcrag Matchmaker at Crosscop, fawn/white, beautiful balance to this one, was of good size with lean head, strong jaw with scissor bite, prefer slightly darker eye, good strong & arched neck to excellent shoulder placement, nice strong pasterns, good feet, super front & fill-in, depth & topline, built on classic lines, handled well.

2. Morland’s Zoraden Master Baker JW, fawn with white trim, & another built on classic lines, shapely & balanced, held a nice profile when moving here & used his assets well.

3. Higginbottom’s Ranveli Royal Duke of Dawnsafon JW

Limit Dog (5)

1. Akerboom & Van Der Schaaf’s Emandoria Dazzling Diplomat for Crème Anglaise, red brindle/white trim has appeal, style & elegance, lean head & good eye shape, fine clean bone, strength of neck, well filled front, well ribbed back with good underline, strong topline held well, nice angle to hindquarters, took off around the ring with some style & held his balance well.

2. Poole & Service’s Falconcrag Twist And Shout, fawn with white trim, nicely constructed elegant male, visually had curves in all the right places, nicely placed shoulder & balanced angle to hindquarters, strength in his second thigh, slightly smaller in stature & not the same reach on the move as 1.

3. Hywel & Marston-Pollock’s Falconcrag Task Master

Open Dog (6)

Stunning class with so little between all of them

1. Dargue & Halliday’s Bowdonia Feet of Flames at Jalwhipp, brindle/fawn/white trim, new to me, was up to size but shouted elegant male, power & strength! He was impressive with elegance combined with his super outline - the dye was cast; elegant lean head with absolutely no coarseness, dark eye set in a shaded muzzle, scissor bite & strong jaw, strong arched neck blending well into his shoulder, well filled front, lovely depth & ribbing, strong topline slightly arched, balance of hindquarters to his front is just right, superb muscle-tone, tapered tail held well, oval padded feet. His power of true propelling movement & soundness without loss of outline was also impressive, handled very well here to take his 4th CC with BOB, plus later got Hound Group 4.

2. Perkins & Van Der Schaaf’s Ch Crème Anglaise’s Just Julian With Silkridge, impressive brindle/fawn/white trim classy boy with clean outline & full of curves in the right places, head lean & elegant, strong jaw, long arched neck blending beautifully into his shoulder line, front well filled without being overdone, good depth & ribbing, good return of upper arm & well matched hindquarters, great body condition, has a presence on the stack & moving so well here, hardly a hair’s breadth between the exhibits in this class, Res.Dog CC

3. Winkley-Balmer & Poole’s Ch Edenwhip Can I Be Him

Veteran Dog (3) 1 abs

1. Price’s Ch Wheelspin Silver Shadow Among Silkdance JW VW fawn with white markings, classic type & shape with absolutely no exaggerations at 7 1/2 years & holding so many titles he clearly thinks showing is beneath him. He moves soundly enough & is true coming & going away but lacks a bit of sparkle needed in such tough competition. No criticism of his construction as he fits the Breed Standard well & was shown in good condition.

2. Webb’s Crosscop Somebody To Love, brindle/white markings slightly larger coming up to 8 years old, leanness with super neckline, front & displaying good depth & topline, opened up & kept his profile well around the ring on the move, not as true coming & going as 1.

Special Beginners Dog (12)

1. Luther & Buckland’s Trevanty Dragon Master (see critique from Puppy)

2. Brookes Collooney For Your Eyes Only JW, nicely balanced brindle with an elegant head, slight stop, strong jaw & good bite, lovely neck & shoulder line, good front & brisket, nicely arched loin, good quarters, a most attractive exhibit that moves soundly.

3. Murton’s Cyangrange Carpe Diem

Minor Puppy Bitch (4)

Nice class of youngsters

1. Wilson’s Falconcrag On A Roll beautifully developed fawn/white, great for size & outline, feminine with good flat skull, oval eye & good muzzle, super neck & shoulder-line strong firm front with good return of upper arm, good brisket, lovely underline & topline, good quarters with strength of second thigh & low hocks, moved very well and was true coming & going away, a nice prospect.

2. Morris, Waddell, Spademan & Mycroft’s Crosscop Temptation to Supeta fawn/brindle with the most attractive head with super dark pigment outlining her dark eyes, almost as if she had eyeliner on, lean & feminine, super for size, lovely arch to her neck, front well filled, feet good, great for curves, good hindquarters & tail. Little to separate them and I’m sure these will change places on many occasions, very appealing youngster.

3. Akerboom & Van Der Schaaf’s Crème Anglaise’s Poetic Masterpiece

Puppy Bitch (7)

Lovely class

1. Howgate & Hull’s Tervanty Dragon Song at Palmik, fawn/white trim, standing so well here she displayed all the femininity, elegance & strength I was looking for, was constructed well throughout & used all of that to show us all her soundness, reach & drive, nothing to dislike about her.

2. Place & Halliday’s Aarminias Pillow Talk, refined brindle & my notes say very pretty, plus she is nice for size & shape, bladed bone & good well-padded feet, smooth underhand, ribcage good with nice underline, croup & rear quarters, moved well here & should have a good future.

3. Spademan, Mycroft & Higginbottom’s Crosscop Seduction

Perkins & Van Der Schaaf’s Crème Anglaise’s Entourage with Silkridge feminine pale brindle with white trim, lean & elegant good expression, clean head, rose shaped fine ears set well, lovely neck & shoulder placement, front held under, good fill in front, excellent feet, good depth, curvy underline & topline, croup leading to nicely angled quarters, strong second thigh & hocks used well to eat up the ring with long low strides, prime condition, has the same sire as my RDCC; in tough competition was Res.BCC & Best Junior.

2. Morris, Waddell & Spademan’s Crosscop Tiny Dancer, lovely fawn/white of elegant & classic lines, lovely construction fore & aft, superb body, strong loin & good topline, has all the requirements and should do well, moved soundly & with reach & drive. Quality exhibits from this kennel, love the name too!

3. Utyman’s Cornstalk Bright Moon

Yearling Bitch (2)

1. Akerboom & Peter’s Crème Anglaise’s Entourage On Tour another cracking brindle/white from this consistent kennel, with good clean lines & curves, she is a good mover, sound coming & going, strides well with no overstepping, great condition.

2. Salkeld & Graham’s Dalerafenn Follow A Dream, fawn/white elegant girl with plenty of substance, her neck & lay of shoulder was good, front & feet good, depth & ribcage just right with strong loin & good topline, not quite so firm moving away however the floor was slippy in places.

Novice Bitch (6)

1. Marston-Pollock’s Falconcrag On It pale brindle, refined all through, nicely constructed, nothing not to like about her & she demonstrated her balance & construction very well with her sound movement.

2. Howgate & Hull’s Tervanty Dragon Song at Palmik (see critique for Puppy B)

3. Morland’s Zoraden Naughty at Forty

Graduate Bitch (7) 2 abs

1. Howgate & Hull’s Tervanty Dragon Song at Palmik (see critique for Puppy B)

2. Samson’s Zoraden Orange Is Da New Blue at Romaclove red/fawn/white markings, liked her for her shapely outline & strength without losing exactly what she is, a lovely feminine girl of good size, super ribcage, nice flat muscle good strength in those second thighs, but she didn’t put this into good use on the move which I’m sure she could do on another day.

3. Fry’s Jothryn Lady Penelope

Post Graduate Bitch (4) 1 abs

1. Turner’s Gilnockie Kinda Cool brindle, elegant & racy girl, has a lean & attractive head, reachy neck, strong front & quarters, depth of chest good, used her assets well & out moved the class here, nice exhibit.

2. Finch’s Zenobia Love Actually JW, different type & of slightly heavier proportions, liked her attractive head & good strong jaw, scissor bite, strong neck to good shoulder placement, strong straight front, good depth, lovely topline & good quarters, feet oval & arched toes, but in this ring she couldn’t match the movement of the eventual winner.

3. Corsar’s Northwhip Zenyatta

Mid-Limit Bitch (8) 1 abs

Super closely contested class, difficult choices

1. Howgate & Hull’s Palmik Truth About Love JW, fawn/white trim, this very elegant little lady stood her ground here displaying her many qualities of super balance & construction each time I looked at her, her muscle does not detract from her clean curved lines, everything flowing into place underhand without a ripple, she did not put a foot wrong & kept up a flawless performance to take Bitch CC which I later understood gave her a well- deserved title.

2. Akerboom & Van Der Schaaf & Perkins Silkridge Black Dahlia, loved this nicely constructed elegant girl, black with white trim & super classy, beautiful head, neck & shoulder, front & rear nicely angled without exaggeration, lovely depth, glossy smooth coat, moved beautifully with long low stride, close decision. Was in my mind for the Challenge.

3. Spademan, Mycroft, Morris & Waddell’s Crosscop California Barbie from Supeta JW

Limit Bitch (8) 1 abs

1. Johnston & Wilson’s Danluke Don’t I Know It, impressive brindle, she knows it! She was in my mind during the challenge & feel she will have her day. Construction wise she is good with a nice strong ribcage, good depth & muscle-tone, strong in topline, slight arch to her strong loin, strong hindquarters, gleaming coat & condition & expertly handled.

2. Marston-Pollock’s Falconcrag Gold Digger, lovely fawn/white markings she appealed greatly for shape & size, everything all in the right places enhances her outline, she moved soundly here but not with the same forehand reach of 1. Still only two, I suspect she has a bright future.

3. Higginbottom’s Ranveli Royal Touch

Open Bitch (3)

1. Short’s Collooney The Little Tease pale brindle/white trim, feminine with super lean head & good eye, strength all through her lovely body, has elegance, graceful curves & style, still like her very much, is sound & reaches out well on the move, first class exhibit & have done her well before, moved well here with long striding sound action & was another strong contender.

2. Place & Halliday’s Brochinbelle A Wee Flossie at Aarminias, fawn/white markings & liked her very much for her femininity & size, balance; classic construction used well to give her a free-flowing action.

3. Hunt’s Feorena Another Venture

Veteran Bitch (4) 1 abs

1. Spademan, Morris & Waddell’s Ch Crosscop Let It Shine for Supeta JW OSW elegant fawn/white of nice size and balance and in good condition for her eight years; refined and elegant, nice flat skull, fine rose shaped ears held well, good underjaw, reachy neck sitting into her shoulders well, good front & fill-in, lovely depth, strong topline, nicely defined outline, used her construction well to take her soundly around the ring, what a lovely girl. Best Veteran

2. Wilkinson’s Citycroft Starfall JW, super constructed girl, slightly stronger all through, liked her clean lines, head, neck & shoulders, super depth, nice tuck-up, maybe would prefer a tad more rise over her loin to accentuate her outline, lovely quarters, pasterns strong, oval arched feet, moved well with good reach.

3. Gray’s Ditto That

Sp. Beginners Bitch (4)

1. Blake’s Crème Anglaise’s Too Hot To Handle for Mazargo (imp NLD) brindle/white of very nice type, head was refined long & lean & nicely tapered, her eye oval & dark, fine ears rose shaped, displayed a very clean outline & flowed from her neck to nicely laid shoulder, well filled in front & good oval ribs, loin well developed, quarters nicely angled & strong, super hocks, moved out very well with nice long reach, true coming & going away, should have many good days with her. BPB.

2. Durante’s Galmira’s Pandora of Duranridge very attractive red/brindle with white markings, slightly finer all through, gorgeous expression & eyes that melt you, nice curvy outline & very good feet, just needs to strengthen in front movement.

3. Mallinson’s Edenwhip Vera
