GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER

My thanks to my two lovely stewards who organized our ring with upmost professionalism. This was the third time awarding challenge certificates in this breed. Sad to see so few entries in the puppy classes, I hope that this is a temporary lull rather than a new trend for this super breed.

Now I spend my time around the spaniel rings, but of course, I spent my youth around the German pointer rings. I was surprised to see so much variance in undercarriages from some angulated undercarriages to some with too much tuck up. All in all, it ruins the lovely silhouette of this breed.

Heads were mixed with few really appealing. Coats liked some of the coarseness the standard asks for. That said, temperaments were excellent, all dogs were in extremely good hard condition, and all appeared to enjoy their day.

Thankfully we were first in the ring, which meant we avoided the heat of the day, although the good size ring was not favored by all exhibits, with some not using the ring to best advantage.

VD 1(0)

1. Fry’s Waldburg Indus. Mature rangier male is balanced to the fore and rear, tight feet and in super hard condition, head a little fine for my preference but much to like, very sound and moved around easily and smoothly, a pleasant start to the day and lovely see such a strong rapport between dog and this hander.

1. Jackson’s Solwaypoint Chilli Pepper. BP. Just my type of GSP, quite mature for his age, my he has a depth and body and a good angle to his fore arm, lovely neck into slopping shoulders and just short enough in body, balanced and moved well, didn’t extend to full capacity but he’s still young, absolutely one to watch, I thought him rather exciting.

2. Brown/Burns’ Magregor Super Nude Around Pothouse. This team were adjusting to each other, and the dog was determined to show the breed’s stubborn streak! On the stack when it came together, I liked his type, good size, workmanlike, well bent stifles, a little longer than one, made better use of himself on the move, and once they come together as a team, I am sure they will be up and away.

3. Roberts’ Keigame Limerick.

JD 1(0)

1. Brown/Burns’ Magregor Four Letter Word for Pothouse 11-month-old chap, another full of early maturity, this chap scores in his depth of chest and compact body, he is so clean and correct coming and going I almost had to blink. Slightly heavier than some but in no way incorrect and partly created by his super hard condition, got better as he settled, and it was a pleasure to judge him will watch him with interest.

1. LD 3(2)

Russell’s Fraulynzway Lightning Bolt JW. Mature male scores in topline and depth well angulated rear quarters, workmanlike but with a certain style and not overdone, sufficient length of neck correct outline and a nice type, he was unlucky to stand alone today as he would still win on strong company, plenty more to come from this chap, I am sure.

OD 5(0)

A class full to brim of the quality, all five are challenge certificate worthy and could have changed place anytime.

1. Brown/Burns’ Sh Ch. Magregor Pop The Dom over Pothouse. DCC & BOB. Not my immediate winner but he grew on me and is absolutely super to handle, with a width of first and second thigh I haven’t seen in the ring for a long time, a lovely type, substance without heaviness, depth and width to his rib that was just right, good neck into well-made shoulder and balanced to the rear his proportions were spot on. Pleasing head and expression, I preferred the eye on this one to the second-place exhibit. He is at full maturity and copied so well, I am certain he gave a good account of himself in the group ring.

2. Mann’s Sh Ch. Elfrindew Endrick to Valger ShCEx. RDCC. A super type and size of male, he is most striking, I liked him all over and particularly appreciated his angles, he epitomizes a smooth gait and really covered the ground, I preferred the head and eye on 1 but this chap is out of the top draw and challenges the best, if anything he is a touch on the more substantial size but in no way incorrect.

3. Marsh’s Kilnrae Berliner.

1. VB 2(0)

Rutherford’s Sh Ch. Cushatlaw Charisma of Dappledele. BV. A lovely quality bitch, showing the gentle and more affection side of this breed, a little longer than some, but I liked her topline, angles and a good neck, her head and shoulders were correct, I really liked her soft melting expression which was feminine and typical. She was pleasure to assess and very much enjoyed her day.

2. Fry’s Waldburg Solar Eclipse. An 11.5-year-old girl, another one thoroughly enjoying her day out she has a condition and soundness that many younger exhibits would envy, I liked her depth and body, would prefer a touch less weight, but forgivable in the circumstances, pretty head with her grey muzzle and eyebrows only adding to her femineity.

PB 3(2)

1. Stewart’s Magregor Take It All Off Levagrad. A sweet lady of correct size and substance for age, I liked her topline and proportions, she was just short enough in body, she is balanced and not overdone in angles, I thought her pretty and feminine and on the move, she had a togetherness and ability that some older exhibits would like, she was smooth and ground covering in equal measure, with a front action that needs to settle just a touch. She is spot on for age.

JB 3(1)

1. Adams’ Keigame Mystique Aurora JW. I was rather taken with this lady, super type, depth and chest giving a typical underline, correct proportions with a back of the correct length and the right length to leg ratio, lovely neck into well laid back shoulders she is balanced, has forechest and moved very well, lots of early promise here and one to watch.

Stewart’s Magregor Take It All Off Levagrad.

1. Mann’s Valger Tiggywinkle JW. BCC. Just my type of bitch, I adored her at first glance, super-size and just the right amount of bone, really liked her head and expression, her rib has a broadness to it that others lacked and she is just long enough, just enough coarseness to her coat, her gait is long easy and smooth and one can easy imagine her on the moor, she lost out on BOB to the male who had ringmaster skills in abundance, but I am sure this partnership will have more fun.

2. Taylor’s Valger Tamara. A slightly heavier bitch with great depth, typey and no mistaking her sex, she showed very well but pushed her handler all the way and demonstrated the typical determination of these German hunting breeds. Lovely topline and in super condition, sound and easy to watch, just need to be convinced of her job in the ring.

1. NB 1(0)

Richards’ Borderoak Phoebe Fern at Hafwenna. Lovely to see this pairing have so much encouragement from the ringside, there is much to like, she is mature, with a good coat pleasing head, moderate to the fore and rear but with plenty of forechest, great condition and a lovely attitude, I hope this pair are encouraged to continue on their showing journey.

PGB 4(0)

1. Smillie-Gray/Gray’s Pelenrise Blow Me A Kiss from Oakberrow. A bitch of good size with soft expression, I liked her size and outline and her proportions, won on type, she has a pleasing appealing typical head and expression although I would prefer a little less flesh to her lip which gives the incorrect appearance of a heavier muzzle, a nice amount of tuck up and a just the right amount of bone, moved well, she’s maturing at just the right speed and that the best is yet to come.

2. Sielski’s Orchidstar Tick Tok JW. A liked this bitch her underline is a little angulated for my preference and I preferred the head on 1 but she scores in topline, size a super forechest and upper arm and moved well, she was shown in first class order and to the very best of advantage, moved well, was unlucky to meet 1 in such good order and so determined to win.

3. James’ Keigame Nell Gwyn at Cwngiedd.

LB 4(1)

A really difficult class with the bitches almost being equal in merits, but of different type and one not moving to best advantage.

1. Taylor/Thomas’ Pingarypoint Puzzled at Knabynnus. A rangier bitch than I normally prefer, lovely head and expression which helped her top the class, good proportions and moved freely and easily just enough depth of body and nice tight feet, a head which reminded me of a time gone by, a difficult bitch to fault and gave a good sound performance.

2. Angus’ Keigame Hearts Desire of Sparkenhoe (AI) JW. This bitch had a coarness to her coat that many lacked and I remarked at the time, she is well off for rear angles but a little moderate in front which causes her to look a little unbalanced, that said there is much to like, she is of good size and shape and workmanlike but with femineity to balance, looked like she could go all day, has a super rapport with her handler.

3. Rutherford’s Dappledele Aurelia Rose.

OB 2(1)

1. Sielski’s Sh Ch. Orchidstar Missing Link JW. RBCC. Real quality bitch, good size and shape, well angulated, tight feet, hocks well down moved very smoothly and freely, short enough in body with a pleasing head and expression, good strong dentition and put on a good show, despite standing alone. Gave way to the typey younger exhibit today.
