Great Dane

It is over 50 years since I first showed a Dane (I was still at school)! In that period there have been very many changes, the saddest has been the decline in numbers. Having recently judged the fawns and brindles at the World Show it was interesting to do them in the UK. I do think type in the UK is now more uniform (as it was in Helsinki), most having the required elegance. At both shows the biggest concern was how many looked good stood and then disappointed on the move. Having said that the best in the UK are truly world class and could have won under me in Finland. Nice to have all colours entered.

1st: 320 SIMPSON, Mr D R Renescent Bewitched

Square and elegant d with excellent leg length. I liked his head, lean in skull and good length of muzzle, a good Dane head not just for a black. Ears could be better. Long neck, well laid shoulder. Lengthy, sloping upper arm. Chest to elbow. Well ribbed. Moderate rear. He could be tidier in front action. Springy stride. Still some maturing to do, which at this age is as it should be. His proportions and quality earnt him the CC. BP and PG4.

2nd: 321 STANTON, Mrs Tracey & LATHAM, Mr Shaun Roshanun Chattahoochee

Square. Lengthy head. Eyes could be a bit tighter. Strong neck. Quite a good front. Chest to elbow. Well ribbed. Moderate rear and could be freer in hind action.

3rd: 324 WRIGHT, Mrs Rebecca & CRANFIELD, Miss Jill Zefather's Two Faces With Irieusdane

1st: 307 LAWTON & FARQUHARSON, Mr Ronnie & Iain Garsak Sir Winslow At Thornbrae

Square d who is elegant but still masc. Liked his length head, just a bit lippy, cleaner in eye than 2. Long neck, shoulder is a bit forward. Deep and well filled chest. Level topline. Moderate rear. Accurate on move. He is a balanced d of v good type.

2nd: 317 POCOCK, Mrs L & Miss T & PAVLOU, Mrs S & Mr P Bubba Von Pao Eberjager With Tamzdane (imp Fca)

Liked his outline. Lengthy head clean through cheeks. Chest to elbow. Level topline. Quite a good rear. Needs to firm in out and back movement, springy in profile.

Quite a well made d who is a bit disappointing on the move. Nice clean cheeks. Could be longer in muzzle, long neck into well laid shoulders. Deep chest. Well ribbed. Plenty of hind angulation with low hocks. Colour could be better.

Fairly square d. Liked his head. Clean cheeks. Long neck. Quite a well made front. Deep chest. Topline could be firmer moving. Well made rear. He is a bit untidy in front action, lengthy, springy stride. RCC

Not the biggest, she is square and elegant. Quite a good head. Long neck into quite a good front. Well laid shoulder. Deep feet. Well ribbed. Moderate rear. Easy mover.

2nd: 285 BARTLETT, Mrs Clare Louise Goldania's Queen Of Destiny

She has a really lovely head. Rather heavy in body and sluggish on the move. Long neck. Moderate but balanced in angulation. Correct topline.

1st: 311 MIDDLETON, Miss J H Ch Taysca Must De Cartier At Dornoir JW

Liked her outline and proportions. Few lumps on her now. She has a v good head. Clean cheeks. Long neck. Deep chest. Well ribbed. V moderate in hind angulation. BV

2nd: 309 MACRAE, Mrs J Keirkane's Melody

She is carrying rather a lot of weight. Fem in head. Long neck. Feet long and flat and weak in pastern moving. Well ribbed. Topline is ok well made rear.

Not a great age for Dane pups.

Elegant b, she is slightly long in body. Head is well shaped but a bit plain. Crested neck. Fairly good shoulders. Elbows can tighten. Chest to elbow. Level topline. Moderate rear. Went fairly well.

2nd: 287 BIELECKA, Ms Joanna Alegriagiant Dare To Dream

Liked the shape of this black. She has a clean head. Lengthy neck. Chest to elbow. Topline can firm. Quite a good rear, can firm up moving.

3rd: 306 LAWSON, Miss Carol Droolakiss Love Story

1st: 304 JACQUES & KIRBY, Mr Michael & Philip Jacqukir Love Me Again (a.i)

V promising fem b of good type. She is elegant and with strength. The first of 3 lovely females from this exhibitor. Liked her head, correct balance. V good eye, long neck, front a little forward. Tight feet. Chest to elbow. V good topline. Moderate, strong rear. Shows great promise. Think I gave her sire a CC many years ago.

2nd: 286 BIELECKA, Ms Joanna Alegriagiant Casjopeya

Quite good proportions. Liked her head. Enough neck. Can settle in topline. Angulation v well balanced.
