Irish Wolfhound Club

Breed: Irish Wolfhound

Irish Wolfhound Club

I was delighted to be invited to judge the 140th Anniversary show for the IW Club, and hoped to get a larger and more diverse entry than at general shows, and I certainly had a very good, by modern standards, entry.

The hounds were generally of quite a good type, none were too short on leg and much too long and flat in back. Bites were also very good throughout. However, hindquarters are a real proble, The Rear is the motor for the dog and many had bady made or very weak quarters, and the movement was poor in very many. There were also a lot of over curly tails, some even forming a ring, a very unsightly fault. When planning future matings do please thake account of these faults and do not use a male with a very bad rear.

Overall the bitches had better depth and the dogs, and the top few are indeed wonderful examples of the breed.

Minor Puppy D (4,2

Quite an awkward age to assess wolfhounds.

1. Haziannes Knights Crusader

He is a good type and liked his proportions. Masc head of length and width. Ears could be better. Enough neck into a well laid shoulder. Deep chest. Topline is ok. Moderate hind angulation and fairly well muscled. In his undercoat today. Was much the better mover here.

2. Haziannes Knights Templar at Sullyenda

His proportions are ok. Lengthy head that is slightly narrow. Medium neck. Rather forward in shoulder. Good depth of chest. Needs more hind angulation and hind action is quite poor, has a steep croup. Coat ok.

Puppy d (2,1)

1. Cairnstorm Latest Editiion of Shalico

Quite good proportions and fairly light on his feet. Long head, well set ears. Lengthy neck. Just needs to deepen and fill in chest. Has an arch to his loin. He is v well ribbed back. Just a bit moderate in rear and needs to strengthen. Would like less curve in tail.

Junior d (4,2)

1. Bonaforte’s Golden Voyageur from Dainwolf

He is almost square. Long head slightly narrow in muzzle. V good eye and expression. Enough neck and quite a well laid shoulder. Chest can drop and fill. Slight arch to loin. Little steep in croup and lifts his tail. Moderate rear with low hocks. Accurate mover with a decent stride and some drive.

2. Xciting Luke vd Tortelduif at Killoughery

Only 9 mths and. Lot to do. Liked his head with good width and strength. Rather narrow through as yet. Curvy outline. Rather moderate in the rear and needs more strength and power, hocks turn in stood and moving.

Yearling d (6)

1. Fidelio Della Bassa Pavese Caredig

V promising young d, can look slightly longer than I would prefer. Has a v good head, strong in jaw. Well set ears. Lengthy neck, shoulders set slightly far apart. Super legs and feet and has depth and fill of chest. Well sprung ribs and built on curvy lines. Moderate rear, could just have slightly stronger hind action.

2. Hydebeck Tyme to Love at Graefyn

Quite good for type, between coats today. Liked his length of head. Enough neck. Quite a good front with chest to elbow. Well ribbed back and a firm topline. Just a bit steep in croup and could have more hind angulation, but outmoved 3 when mattered.

3/ U’Power Elegance Aventador des Terres de Norfendre Dainworl JCH

Quite a typy d, coat is slightly long. Lengthy head. Medium neck. Moderate In angulation but he is balanced. V slight arch to loin.

Novice (5,1)

1. Glengail Ccillian

Quite a good type d. Liked his head, eye and expression could be better. Strong neck. Fairly good front. Could have more fill of chest. Well sprung ribs. Moderate r3ar. Rather flattens on move and needs a bit more power in rear.

2. Hydebeck Eternal Love

Quite good proportions. Head looks stronger than it is because of hair. Lengthy neck. Could have more front angulation. Rather steep in croup. Ok for spring of rib. Nice tight feet

3. Francistown Clifford.

Graduate d (2,1)

1. Hydebeck Tyme to Love at Graefyn

Post grad d (1)

1. Brachan Giorno Di Natale

Quite good proportions. Long head, could be stronger in muzzle. Dark eyes. Lengthy and strong neck. Slightly forwards in shoulder. Deep chest. Well ribbed back. Underline could be better. V long in croup and set isn’t right, reflected in hind action, but parallel going away with width.

Limit d (4)

1. Killoughery Ricocher with Braewisan

Quite a nice type d who won class on his length of stride. Liked his head, has a good coat so not many furnishings making him look a bit plain. Lengthy neck. Well laid shoulder. Good depth and fill in front. He is well ribbed back. Could have more curve in topline. Liked his rear which he uses well, but sloppy coming towards.

2. Diomede Della Bassa Pavese to Sade

Liked his size and proportions. Has a super head and long, strong neck. He is rather upright in front assembly and so short steps in front. Liked his depth of chest. Well sprung ribs. Moderate rear. Tail curves too much which spoilt outline somewhat. Low hock and deep feet.

3. Gaelmarque Nomateus

Could have a bit more of him and his is rather too long, but moved with a fairly easy stride. Lengthy head. Enough neck, quite a decent front. Too much hind angulation. Topline could be stronger.

Open d (5,2)

1. Dukesarum Murphy

Very typy d with curves in all the right places. Lengthy head just a little heavy in cheek and ears flat. Lengthy neck into a well laid shoulder. Would like more slope to pastern. Deep and well filled chest. Well ribbed back. Could have a little more turn of stifle. Accurate mover with a light and easy stride. Well set tail and carried well, fairly straight. RCC. This kennel showed some very good Worfhounds

2. Killoughery Rockafella of Outsight

Liked his outline and proportions. Quite a good head. Better ears than 1. Enough neck. Quite a good front. Deep chest. Would like a little more tuck up in underline, has a good topline. A bit steep in croup. Moderate rear. Tail curls too much on move.

3. Killoughery Touchstone

Big d just lacks the curvy lines of those above. Strong masc head, eyes could be darker. Lengthy neck. Deep chest. Liked his length of back. Good turn of stifle and low hocks. Too much curl in tail.

Champion d (1)

1. Ch Caredig Mafioso

Top quality d of super type. Super head, length and strength without coarseness. Long neck into a well laid shoulder. Liked his width of chest. Correct topline. Well ribbed back to a firm loin. Super rear. Light of his feet if slightly lazy, however seemed to come alive for BOB. He is a top quality d with all the breed essentials. Awarded him his first group back in April and today CC & BOB
