Breed: Bernese Mountain Dog
Thank you to Midlands Counties for the kind invitation to judge today; it is always an honour and a privilege to judge your breed. I was pleased with the overall quality of the entry and appreciated the depth of breed type on display. I would like to thank all exhibitors for their support and for presenting their dogs in excellent condition, making my appointment both enjoyable and rewarding. Thank you to my two ring stewards who did an excellent job in keeping things moving smoothly. Minor Puppy Dog (1,0) 1st Watson’s Etterbern Gozan to Stepdashar 6 months and 2 days old and making his very first appearance in the ring, this youngster made a pleasing debut. A confident and happy puppy throughout. He presents a pleasing overall outline with good bone for his age and correct proportions. Head developing well for age, with correct bite and a dark, almond-shaped eye. Well laid-back shoulders and a correct turn of stifle. Moved freely and positively in all directions, maintaining good tail carriage. Still a little soft in pasterns at present, which should strengthen with maturity. Junior Dog (1,0) 1st Love & Johnson’s Gorsebern Mr Twister Just over 12 months, a good-sized young dog with good bone and a pleasing outline. Presents a correct profile and tail set, although standing a little high at the rear today. Head of good proportions with sufficient stop and a broadening, flat skull, dark eye giving a kind expression. Moved well both coming and going, showing good reach in front and maintaining balance in profile. A young dog, well presented and handled, who should continue to improve as he matures. Yearling Dog (3,0) 1st Reid & Given’s Fortonpark Senator at Mytrue 22 months old and of good breed type. Possesses a pleasing head, of correct proportions, broad and strong skull, with dark eye and good ear set, producing a true benevolent expression. Naturally standing four-square with balanced proportions, good bone and forechest. Well-constructed front; strong, straight front legs and compact feet. Moved soundly and confidently in all directions, maintaining a level topline. Presented in excellent coat and condition. Moved soundly and confidently in all directions, maintaining a level topline. 2nd Cotton’s Etterbern Baz Vegas at Jukesbern 16 months, a medium-sized male with enough bone and a compact outline. Pleasing head with correct expression, dark eye and correct bite. Held his topline well on the move and carried his tail correctly. Would prefer more rear angulation, and he would benefit from more overall strength and width as maturity comes, but a sound and honest youngster. 3rd Edge’s Malindibeach Harlequin Post Graduate Dog (1,0) 1st New’s Etterbern Forever First An attractive dog, full of breed type presented in good coat and condition. Balanced outline standing in profile and a displaying a happy, confident temperament at all times. Masculine head of correct type, with dark eyes, good ear set and correct bite. Pleasing profile standing with good overall proportions, level top line, good rear angulation and moved well from behind, but would prefer better front angulation as this is affecting front movement. Good profile movement with level topline and correct tail set and carriage. Limit Dog (5,0) 1st Wort’s Meadowpark What a Dream at Glorybern 2½-year-old dog who immediately caught the eye for his excellent breed type, strong and sturdy with a very pleasing balanced profile. Well-constructed with good front angulation and correct turn of stifle, enabling correct movement. Shown in excellent coat and condition, although I feel his handler could make even more him. 2nd Shaw’s Meadowpark Sunshine Blend 5-year-old Smaller and lighter than first but still very pleasing breed type with everything in proportion and balanced throughout. Compact outline and enough bone for his size. Nice head with dark almond shaped eye and good ear set, giving him a kind expression. Handled well and presents a very pleasing outline. Strong masculine head, with correct dark eye, although slightly rounded in shape. A good depth of chest, correct spring of rib, level top line, and well-rounded rump leading to correct tail set, excellent rear angulation with strong, short hocks. Moved with purpose and drive and showed good balance in profile, however would prefer a cleaner front movement. Pleased to award him the Reserve CC today. 3rd Atherton’s Ch Valentinn vom Durrbachler Wald (Imp Nld) Veteran Dog (1,0) 1st Cotton’s Ch Billy No Mates at Jukesbern 7½ years old and presented in mature coat and condition. Special Beginners Dog (1,0) 1st Edge’s Malindibeach Harlequin 22 months, medium-sized and a happy, confident young dog. Sadly, out of coat today, which detracted from overall impression. Enough bone for size and a level topline. Slightly long in muzzle but with correct bite and a dark almond-shaped eye giving a kind expression. Correct rear angulation. Movement was generally okay, though difficult to fully assess as he was unsettled at times. Well constructed front and rear, with pleasing angulation and good bone. Feminine yet strong head with dark eye and good ear set. Moved well, showing good reach and drive. Nothing to dislike here — a very promising youngster that I’m sure will have a bright future. Best Puppy in Breed. 2nd Marsden & Robertson’s Tulipanos Berni Rebel Riot at Trudaleaze (Imp Hun) NAF TAF Just 6 months old and a delight to watch, being happy and confident throughout. Pleasing body shape with correct proportions, good angulation, strong straight front legs and enough bone for her age. Confident in the ring and moved out well from all directions with reach and drive. Post Graduate Bitch (3,1) 1st Krjukova’s Elbrusbern Bold Legacy Caught my eye as she entered the ring, a beautiful bitch full of breed type, presented in good coat. When allowed to stand naturally, she shows correct proportions and a beautiful harmonious shape (please avoid overstretching). Lovely strong but feminine head with dark eye and correct expression. Standing four-square with correct front and rear angulation, resulting in strong, sound movement, level top line and good tail carriage. A quality bitch, deserving of the Reserve CC. 2nd Wood’s Oskevabern Hellraiser JW Medium-sized bitch who is very well balanced, with everything in correct proportion. Beautiful head with a sweet, feminine expression. Moved well from the rear and in profile but front movement could be tidier coming towards. She maintains a level topline standing and on the move, with correct tail carriage. Handled well. Limit Bitch (2,0) 1st Rossall’s Stormberne Go Classical 3½-year-old mature bitch with good breed type. Strong yet feminine head with correct expression, enhanced by a lovely dark eye and good ear set. Nothing is exaggerated with this bitch which enhances her femininity. 2nd Riseborough’s Malindibeach Serenade at Moonbach Mature bitch, presenting a pleasing outline, with sufficient bone for her size and well-balanced angulation. Head shows good qualities, though a broader skull would be preferred, as this would enhance her overall expression. She moved well when viewed in profile and from all directions, and was presented in good coat and condition. Open Bitch (3,0) 1st Baldwin’s Ch Fortonpark Valentallina 3-year-old bitch of outstanding quality, full of breed type and presented in excellent coat and condition. An eye-catching show girl who clearly enjoys her time in the ring and works beautifully with her handler. Strong, broad and attractive head with correct proportions and a gorgeous kind expression. Standing four square, she has good proportions, great substance, and breath throughout in a strong yet feminine way. Correct front and rear angulation, moving well in profile showing good reach and drive holding her level top line. Delighted to award her the CC. 2nd Worrall’s Fortonpark Sweet Dreams at Oakbern Another quality bitch from the same kennel as 1st, full of breed type with a feminine but strong head with dark eye and used ears to best effect giving a beautiful expression. She stood four-square with good bone and correct front and rear angulation, level top line but a little longer in loin than I would prefer. Moved okay with good tail carriage but seemed to lack enthusiasm today which affected her overall performance. 3rd Sokel’s Kernow Blue Lagoon Judge: Jeanette Green
