Thanks go to the Northern Border Terrier Club for inviting me judge their 53rd Championship Show, and to the exhibitors for giving me the opportunity to go over the good entry of Borders. Thanks also to my stewards Nicki Cummins, Julie Leckenby and Sarah Eccles who really did a fantastic job and kept everything running smoothly, I enjoyed my day immensely.

It was an extremely hot day and I was thankful we were inside the hall, the committee made sure doors were opened to ensure a through draft which made for a pleasant environment for the task in hand. No dogs appeared stressed by the heat when they were being shown, although some dogs did seem less than enthusiastic in the ring.

I found some really good profile movement, but good movement fore and aft was in the minority, and in some classes non-existent.

Overall some very good coats and pelts and good presentation, some really good tails too, just a few long thin tails. Although found three kinked tails on this occasion, teeth seemed cleaner and only a few feet spoilt by overly long nails.

1st - Chorbeck Chatty Man JW ShCM (Mrs H Haughton) 10.2 years , G&T. A well presented veteran in excellent coat with thick pliable skin, otterlike head with keen expression and good underjaw. I liked his good neckline into topline and good tailset. Straight forelegs with good feet and legs. Looked balanced in profile, was easy to span and considering is age particularly on a hot day he showed his head off, a credit to his owner.

2nd - Weststar Lone Ranger at Ardenholm (Mrs C Swain) 7.1 years, B&T. Another in good coat, good head and expression, easy to span but not quite the legs and feet of first placed dog, moved a tad close behind today.

3rd - Kentixen Mint Imperial At Roseghyll (Mrs A Johnson) 9.5 years, G&.T. Not the topline of my winner and a little steep in croup, nice type with a good head, good coat and pelt, easy to span.

Res - Akenside Eventide (Mr & Mrs B & N Wanless)

VHC - Cedarhill Dish Of The Day For Dexlin (Mr B & Mrs L P Inness)

Minor Puppy – Dog

As expected, all legs and wings in this class, very immature babies.

1st - Chorbeck All That Jazz (Mrs H Haughton) 6 months, G&T. Very enthusiastic outgoing, happy temperament which was nice to see. Narrow throughout with a lovely rib and nice head and expression. Initially at first glance looked a tad upright in the shoulder but going over him he had a nice neckline going into fairly well angulated shoulders, good forelegs and feet, racy hindquarters, covered the ground well. Not a great deal of coat today. Just needs time.

2nd - Whittonglebe Spylaw Scout (Mr G & Mrs J Mackenzie) 8 months. G&T. Head and expression didn’t appeal as much as my winner, again not much coat but liked his rib, topline and tailset, smart puppy who looked good in profile.

3rd - Earthwise Phantom (Mr E Houston) Nearly 9 months, G&T. Lovely head with a keen expression, short strong muzzle and dark eye, heavier and cobbier overall than my 1 & 2 and a tad shorter and rounder in the rib.

Res - Fairhambrook The Tyler (Mr P Tomlinson)

1st - Otterbobs Beazon (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin) 9 months, G&T. A rangy puppy, upto size, very well presented with his coat just coming through. Lovely otter like head, dark eye and a short strong muzzle. Neck of moderate length going into narrow, well laid shoulders. Good legs and feet. Easily spanned, deep and narrow and well ribbed back with a strong loin. Nice flow from top of his head, neck, topline to set on. Well angulated hindquarters and covered the ground well. Res. BP

2nd - Raedwulf Lionheart (Mr M & Mrs V Atkinson) nearly 12 months. B&T. Very different type to my winner. Overall smaller, very smart and well presented in good coat and pelt and stood well on small neat feet. Heavier across the shoulders with a shorter rounder rib and shorter stride than 1. A tad harder to span but had a super firm topline and tailset.

3rd - Mysulan Byards Lad (Mr B Wanless, Mr J & Mrs K Grimes) 11 months, G&T. Pleasing head and expression, presented in good coat and condition, with a good rib. Straight forelegs not too heavy in bone, well turned stifle.

Res - Otterbobs Kypie Star (Mrs C Sinnott)

VHC - Earthwise Phantom (Mr E Houston)

1st - Brumberhill Beswick JW (Mr S A Mcpherson) 18 months, G&T. Quality young male presented in cracking form, displays excellent breed type. He’s not a particularly big dog, everything is in moderation, with no exaggerations. Nicely proportioned otter like head with a short strong muzzle, well placed V shaped ears and strong underjaw. Excellent teeth. Loved his neck into narrow well angulated shoulders, firm topline with a really good set on and short thick, then tapering tail. Stood well on good legs and small neat feet. Liked his racy hindquarters and short rear pasterns, not overdone in any way. Looked a picture in the stack and on the move. Res. CC

2nd - Staynorwood Nightcap (Mr G & Mrs C Richardson) 17 months. G&T. Really liked this young male. Lovely otter like head, dark eye and neat ears, correct bite. Lovely neck of moderate length into narrow well laid shoulders, narrow throughout and easy to span. Ribbed well back into strong loin, liked his good topline, tail and racy hindquarters, which he used well. Just lacked the ring presence of my winner today and was completely out of coat, but he is still young, a new jacket and a bit of experience could change all that. Lots to like about him.

1st - Brumberhill Bit O’Blarney JW (Mr S A Mcpherson) 22 months. B&T. Very typical Border, excels in breed type with a lovely head of good proportions, short strong muzzle, dark eye and well placed ears. Neck of moderate length which fits seamlessly into nicely angulated shoulders, narrow throught with a lovely rib and very easy to span. Rock solid topline, with really good set on and super moderately short carrot shaped tail. Moved with drive from the rear with a well turned racy hindquarter. Good feet and legs not too heavy in bone, and a well presented coat and pelt completed the picture.

2nd - Comberdown Likely Lad (Mr I & Mrs A Higham) 18 months, G&T. A dog I have often admired from the ringside and was unlucky to meet my winner today in such good form. He’s a very hard, fit athletic dog really nice to handle with a lovely head and expression. Love his flowing neckline and topline, set on and moderately short tail. He is narrow across the shoulders with a nice rib and very easy to span. Would prefer if he had more furnishings left on his legs, being stripped makes him look lacking in bone, which he isn’t, he has good legs and feet.

3rd - I Walk The Line Into Thornheswin (Mr J C Dixon) 19 months, G&T. A really striking looking dog when he entered the ring, with his rich dark red grizzle colour and lovely otter like head, dark eye and keen expression. Liked his straight forelegs, good feet with thick pads and super coat and pelt. He was spannable but a tad heavier across the shoulders and not as good in tail as 1 and 2,

Dark eye and good dentition, would prefer a stronger underjaw, his ears are small and V shaped but set a tad high. Good in rib and easily spanned and ribbed well back into strong loin with good underline. Good feet and legs.

2nd - Ebffiniau Whiskey In The Jar (Miss E Brinkley) 19 months. G&T. Handy sized young male, not particularly enjoying his day out. Nicely presented in good order and stood well on good legs and feet. Pleasing head with little stop and a dark eye. Nicely angulated fore and aft with a good topline, tail and tail set. Good rib, very easy to span.

3rd - Tyneotter Bolt From The Blue (Miss N Howard) 2 years 11 months. B&T. Bigger throughout than my 1 & 2 and a tad heavier in the shoulder and not as good in tail, but has breed type and I could span him. Strong head with a dark eye, keen expression and big teeth.

1st - Chesterton Viva Las Vegas (Mr A J & Mrs W Mooney) 19 months, G&T. A quality young male, stood out for me in this class. He still has an immaturity about him and lacked top coat today but has a good reach of neck into a lovely clean, smooth well angulated shoulder. When viewed from the front he is narrow throughout, his forelegs are straight with firm pasterns and small feet. Deep and narrow he is well ribbed back into a strong loin, very easily spanned with a good underline. Racy hindquarters. Moved well.

2nd - Thornheswin Hellfire In Borderfox (Miss A & Miss E Dixon) 2 years 4 months, G&T. Not quite the front assembly of my winner but he is narrow throughout and easy to span, he possess a lovely otter like head and keen expression, was well presented in good order.

3rd - Hollexby Travellin Man (Mr P Appleby) 6 years 4 months. G&T. A tall rangy dog, not the most enthusiastic of show dogs and not much coat today, but he is quite narrow throughout, spannable and has quite a nice long, low ground covering side gait which secured him his place in the class.

1st - CH Yorkpiece Fiery Lucifer (Mrs J L Lee) 6 years 6 months, B&T. One out of the top drawer I have liked and judged before. Has great ring presence and combines the qualities of a dog fit for function in the field with that of a dog equally at home in the show ring. He certainly is a laster and my critique of him back 2023 still fits the bill - Pleasing head with moderately broad, flat skull with little stop, neck fits neatly into well laid shoulders. Presents well and never stops showing, standing on good legs and feet. Looked good in profile both standing and on the move, covering the ground with reach and drive. Easily spanned and shown in excellent blue and tan jacket, a superb tail, moderately short and thick at the base, completed the picture. CC and BIS.

2nd - Ch Achouffe McKay's Fable of Redesholt (Mrs S McKay). 6 years 9 months. G&T. Well; presented dog in really good order, excellent coat and pelt, strong head of good proportions , liked his expression, big teeth and strong underjaw. Well upto size for me and harder to span than my winner but impressed me with his very sound movement fore and aft.

3rd - Chesterton Vancouver (Mr A J & Mrs W Mooney) 19 months, G&T. Litter brother to my Limit winner and similar comments apply. He was in good coat with a thick skin, moved well but looked immature in this company today. Still a very young dog, just needs time.

1st - CH Smalesmouth Skylark (Mrs J Roberts) 12 years, G&T. Beautiful bitch, hard to believe her age as she still can move like a youngster. Tremendous coat and pelt, lovely shoulders and rib, well turned hindquarters, and rock solid topline all used to good effect on the move. Sound coming and going with exceptional ground covering profile movement. Best Veteran.

2nd - CH Howthwaite Gay Dusky (Mr R J & Mrs E A Barrett) 7 years, B&T. One I often admired from the ringside and didn’t disappoint. Quality bitch with lovely head and expression, sporting a super thick harsh dense coat, and thick skin. Well constructed, stood well on good legs and feet, another impressive mover.

3rd - CH Ravenside Marsha At Jordith JW (Mrs L.M.I & Mr A.M. Jordan-Smith) 7 years 6 months, G&T. Nice sized bitch, left her coat at home today and looked a tad matronly, but enjoyed her day and never stopped showing.

Res - Crosby Dark Duchess At Roseghyll (Mrs A Johnson)

VHC - Oakyard Objet D'art at Hollexby (Mr P Appleby)

Minor Puppy – Bitch

A class very similar to MPD, immature babies most enjoying their first show, in most cases movement was erratic and some hard to assess as they were carrying a bit too much weight. Winners could easily change places on another occasion.

1st - Chorbeck Queen Of Jazz With Foxwater (Mrs J Spence) 6 months, G&T. Lithe puppy, narrow throughout with a nice rib, looked balanced, had breed type with a pleasing head. Needs to tighten in feet and pasterns but was well presented in good coat and pelt. Thought her handler did a good job settling her and making sure she enjoyed the experience.

2nd - Ravenside Ramona At Borderrush (Miss A J Hall) 6 months G&T, Smaller than my winner and looked immature, narrow throughout, pleasing feminine head with a good topline and tailset and underline. Moderate throughout with no exagerrations. Well presented in good coat. Will be interested to see how she grows on.

3rd - Chorbeck Jazz Blues (Mrs A Peake). 6 months, B&T. Litter mate of my winner. Nicely shaped otter like head, nice rib and ribbed well back, good for coat but needs to settle. Feet need to tighten, just needs time as you expect at this age.

1st - Howthwaite Gaan Divilish (Mr R J & Mrs E A Barrett) One I have judged previously as a Junior and re-appraisal didn’t disappoint. Lovely size, she would get anywhere. Well presented with feminine head with the keenest expression, black nose leather. Her whole attitude, free standing on a loose lead, gives you the impression she combines activity with gameness. Good front assembly, stands well on small feet. Easy to span, strong loin, good underline and well angulated racy hindquarters, nice tail. Moved well fore and aft, really good ground covering side gait. Res.CC.

2nd - Flegato Favorita (Mrs M Fleming) 2 years 6 months, G&T. Looked a picture in the stack, lovely breed type, loved her otter like head and expression and was in super coat and condition. Good neck and shoulders, straight forlegs not too heavy in bone, small well padded feet good rib, racy hindquarters. Covered the ground well, just not moving as positive in the front as my winner today, but I liked her a lot.

3rd - Borderrush Clementine For Ardenholm (Mrs C Swain) 3 years, G&T. Not just as smartly turned out as my 1 and 2 today, but really nice typey sort, handy size, good angles fore and aft, stood well on good legs and feet.
