Driffield Championship Dog Show
Golden Retrievers
My sincere thanks to the Officers & Committee for the invitation to judge at this show, which was
third time lucky, as my appointment was cancelled in 2021 due to COVID and again in 2024 in
which the high winds meant the show was cancelled. I had a thoroughly enjoyable day, finally
managed to get in the ring at 11am and the Goldens managed to make the group. I was really
delighted to watch my Best of Breed take Gundog Group 4 and Best Veteran take Veteran Group
2, interesting they were both bred from the same kennel, I obviously like the type and well done for
breeding such great examples of the breed.
The positive being, feet have vastly improved since last time I judged, however on the negative
side, weight is not maturity, there were far too many exhibits that were simply carrying too much
weight. I found far more level bites and misplaced teeth than I have ever in the past and lastly but
not least I know flying tails was creeping into the breed when I left, however it is far worse now. It
was a delight to find a correct bite and level tail, something for breeders to think about. The
standard dictates ‘a symmetrical, balanced, active, powerful, level mover, possessing natural
working ability. Perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, tail set on and carried level with back’.
The strength was in the bitches, and I loved my challenge line-up.
On the plus side I wished in quite a few classes that I could have awarded more first places and
hard decisions had to be made on the day. Many thanks to my stewards and finally the exhibitors
for a lovely numerically high entry.
