Field Spaniels

I would like to offer my thanks to the officers and committee for their gracious invitation to judge Field Spaniels at the Leeds Championship Show with CC’s for the first time. This remarkable breed exemplifies both functionality and workmanlike qualities, and I was genuinely impressed by the calibre of the dogs presented to me. I would also like to thank all the exhibitors for the opportunity to appreciate your beautiful dogs. The competition was high, resulting in some very close decisions.

1st: 6302 HOLGATE, Mrs Jill & HOLGATE, Mr Charles Nadavin Avyaan

This 9-month-old liver dog has a pleasing overall outline, showing to be of a nice size and shape. He features a masculine head with well-toned, almond-shaped eyes that have a gentle expression. His neck is of good length, flowing into a firm topline but falls away slightly at the croup. He has a deep brisket and stands on well-boned limbs. His hindquarters show a good width of thigh and low-set hocks. While he was a little unsettled on the move, he had good drive from the rear.

1st: 6298 HEPBURN, Miss Julie & LAVERICK, ms Rita Irisbel From Now On

This lively 2-year-old black dog is full of energy and shows his playful character. He has a well-proportioned outline and is all male, with good bone structure and substance. His head may be slightly stronger, but his dark eyes convey a lovely expression. He has a muscular neck of good length that flows into a firm topline and a well-set tail. He possesses depth and strength throughout his body, along with powerful, muscular hindquarters. His profile is well-maintained on the move, and he shows good width behind, though he wasn't quite as tidy in the front today. He is presented in excellent coat condition.

2 very different dogs, both having their virtues

1st: 6305 MENZIES HENDERSON, Miss Mr A M A Nadavin Nabilah At Vrackie

Pleasing outline of this 2-year-old liver dog. He has a rectangular body shape and displays good overall balance when standing. He has a masculine, noble head with slightly raised eyebrows, and his dark, almond-shaped eyes give him a lovely, gentle expression. He stands on well-boned limbs, although I would prefer slightly tighter feet. He has good length and spring in his ribcage, along with a strong loin that leads to a well-set tail. His strong, muscular quarters and low-set hocks provide him with a powerful driving action when he is focused.

2nd: 6308 MOSS, Mrs Leanne Gadhelic Jack Frost

A 21-month-old liver roan dog, of a different type than the winner, still needs time to mature and complete the picture. I think he has a lovely head, long and lean with good chiselling, low-set ears, and dark, almond-shaped eyes, all of which contribute to a kind expression. He has a well-developed forechest and good depth to the brisket, though he doesn't have quite the bone structure as the winner. His angulation is balanced both in the front and the rear. He has a lovely profile when moving, but today he is not as tidy in the front.

1st: 6294 DAVIES, Mr & Mrs J & P Sh Ch Gadhelic Rum Tum Tugger To Benbreac

This 5-year-old liver dog has a shapely outline and presents a smart appearance with balanced proportions. He has a masculine head that is lean and of good length, paired with dark eyes of the correct shape, and well-furnished, low-set ears that frame his face. He possesses a strong neck, a well-developed forechest, and a deep brisket. His ribs are nicely sprung, and he has a muscular loin. Happy and outgoing in movement, he maintains a firm outline while striding out at the correct pace and showing good drive. One I considered for top honours

2nd: 6295 ELLIOTT, Ms M Elgert Break Every Rule At Portsoy

A smart 5-year-old blue roan dog with a pleasing rectangular outline when standing. He has good proportions in his long and lean head, complemented by a kind, dark eye. I appreciated his well-developed body, which shows good depth in the brisket and correctly sprung ribs, while maintaining a firm topline and a well-carried tail. His movement was clean, although he did not quite match the reach and drive of the winner. He was presented in excellent coat and muscular condition.

Showing that this is a slow maturing breed, what a superb veteran class

1st: 6307 MOSS, Mr A D Sh Ch Fecimus Chase The Dream To Ewtor JW

This superb liver dog has just reached the veteran stage, but looks years younger! When standing, he exudes quality and breed type, making him a joy to examine. He has a handsome, chiselled head with an ideal balance of masculine strength and refinement. His expression is truly endearing and noble. His neck is strong and of good length, flowing into a firm, well-held topline. He possesses an admirable forechest and depth in the brisket, along with a well-proportioned ribcage. His strong, muscular quarters and low-set hocks allow him to stride confidently around the ring, displaying impressive drive and accuracy in his footfall. He is presented in superb coat and condition, completing the picture. I was delighted to award him the DCC, BOB, and BV, and he was shortlisted in a highly competitive veteran group.

2nd: 6292 BENNETT, Mr D A & Mrs J Sh Ch Jesham Baronet

You would never imagine that this stunning dog is approaching his 9th birthday. His silhouette when standing is beautiful, with graceful lines that flow from one part to the next. He exhibits excellent balance and proportions. With a lovely, masculine head and wide open, dark, almond-shaped eyes beneath slightly raised brows, he possesses a truly noble expression. His clean neck, of good length, seamlessly flows into a firm topline and a well-set tail. He is well-developed throughout the body and stands on quality, flat-boned limbs with tight feet. His profile movement is impressive and driving, although not quite as precise as the winning dog behind today. He is turned out in immaculate coat and condition. I was delighted to award him the RDCC

1st: 6311 OSBORN, Ms G Elgert Blackpink

I absolutely loved this 9-month-old black bitch. She is full of naughtiness and sass—it's as if she hasn't read the breed standard that states they should be "unusually docile"!! Her outline is quite eye-catching, with beautiful body lines and a shapely silhouette. She is very feminine, featuring a long, lean head and a gentle expression. She has a good length of neck and a well-filled forechest for her age, along with a good length to her ribcage. Her hindquarters are wide, with a nice bend of stifle. Once she settles down to move, she strides out positively and with great enthusiasm. BPB & BPIB

1st: 6304 MACBAIN, Miss Allie & BREWER, Ms Danielle Fecimus Repeat The Rumour

This is a very elegant and shapely 15-month-old liver female. Not a big girl, but she is perfectly proportioned and well-balanced. Her head is feminine, with nice chiselling beneath the eyes, raised eyebrows, and a well-defined occiput. While I would prefer a slightly darker eye, her expression remains gentle, and there is time for her colour to darken further. I appreciate her well-filled forechest and the depth, whilst holding a firm topline. She uses her wide quarters to move with drive around the ring, displaying her happy and outgoing demeanour.

A class where they could all change places on another day, down to performance on the day

1st: 6312 TREVOR, Mrs Kathryn & TREVOR, Mr Tim Trevorsilk Blue Velvet

A 2-year-old liver bitch, who has a sturdy yet feminine appearance. She is well-proportioned with good height-to-length ratios. Her head is feminine, featuring a good length to her foreface, raised eyebrows, and low-set ears that contribute to a gentle expression. She has a good reach of neck that flows into a firm, well-held topline. Her forechest is nicely filled in, and her chest extends down to the elbow, with her legs well positioned under her body. The hindquarters are wide, showing a nice sweep of stifle. She was clean on the move, although she was in her underwear today.

1st: 6306 MOORE, Miss C Fantastic Field Shine Like A Diamond At Gadhelic J

This 21-month-old liver bitch exhibits a shapely silhouette. She has substance and bone, but nothing is overdone, each part flows elegantly into the next. Her head is appealing, well-proportioned, and nicely chiselled below the eyes, with a moderate stop and toning almond-shaped eyes. She has a good reach of neck and impressive depth and fill in of the forechest, standing on quality, flat-boned limbs. Her ribcage is nicely sprung and extends back to a strong loin. She has wide, muscular quarters and is short hock to heel. While her foot placement was accurate, she lacked the sparkle in the challenge today.

2nd: 6309 MOSS, Mrs Leanne & MOSS, Mrs A E Elgert Dancing Queen At Ewtor

There is so much to admire about this 2-year-old black bitch. She is incredibly feminine and elegant. I feel she still needs a bit more time to fulfil her full potential. Her head and expression are delightful, characterised by her dark, soulful eyes. She has a good length of neck, though not quite the forechest and depth of winner, but enough to create a shapely outline. The handler tends to over-stretch her, which causes her to lose her topline when stacked. However, everything comes together beautifully when she moves, holding a lovely outline and demonstrating positive drive.

Class 2573 OB (4 Entries) Abs: 1 - Lovely class of top quality bitches

1st: 6300 HOLGATE, Mrs Jill & HOLGATE, Mr Charles Sh Ch Nadavin Exclusive JW

This beautiful 4-year-old liver bitch is very smart when she stands; her outline is typical, and her construction is sound. She is perfectly sized and balanced, exuding breed type. Her head is noble, long, and lean, featuring chiselling beneath the eyes which are dark and kind in expression. She has a graceful flow through her neck and topline, with a well-developed forechest and brisket. The angulation is harmonious both in the front and rear. She has the correct ribcage length and a strong loin. Her strong hindquarters enable her to drive around the ring with the typical, unhurried manner. She was well handled and presented. I was delighted to award her BCC & BOS

2nd: 6310 OSBORN, Ms G Sh Ch Elgert Private Dancer

Another super bitch, a five-year-old liver, who exhibits a slightly different build compared to the winner, as she has a touch more length to the leg. Nevertheless, she remains well balanced and proportionate, with lovely body lines. She is exceptionally feminine, possessing a delightful head that exudes quality, nobility, and breed type. Her neck has a good reach, seamlessly flowing into a firm and well-held topline. She is well-developed throughout her body, with good depth and ribs that are carried well back. I appreciated her strong, muscular hindquarters and low-set hocks. She moves freely and positively, highlighting her lovely muscular condition. I was pleased to award her the RBCC

1st: 6301 HOLGATE, Mrs Jill & HOLGATE, Mr Charles Sh Ch Nadavin Wenhaver JW

Wow, another stunning veteran approaching 9 years of age. This liver bitch still possesses a remarkable outline when standing. She is impressively balanced and has an abundance of quality. Her outline is shapely, yet nothing is overdone, making her a pleasure to assess. She appears distinguished and noble, with a touch of grey that adds to her appeal. She has a good length of neck and a well-developed forechest with excellent depth, as well as a good length in her ribcage. She stands on quality, flat-boned limbs, has wide quarters, and a well-bent stifle. She moved with positive footfall, although she did lose her topline slightly today.
