I want to thank the officers and committee for their kind invitation to judge at the Gundog Society of Wales. It was a privilege to judge a lovely entry of quality Flat-Coated Retrievers, and many of the decisions were indeed closely contested.

1ST 600 - Gemswin It's Raining Men (Mrs Gemma & Mrs Celia Jacobs & Taite)

8-month-old dog who is very together for his age. When standing, he has a balanced and pleasing outline. His head is nicely proportioned and well-moulded, with a kind dark eye. He has a good length of neck, and is developing nicely through the body. His limbs are well-boned, onto tight feet. Currently, he is a little soft in the topline, but this will strengthen with time. I liked his hindquarters, which show a good bend in the stifle and width in the thigh. He just needs to tighten up a little in front, but overall, he is a happy and confident mover.

2ND 640 - Pippolola Inky Torro (Mrs S Tamblyn)

What a sweetie! At just 6 months old, he is giving a lot away to the winner. I appreciated his overall balance and proportions, just needing time to fill out his frame. He has a kind expression, a good length of neck, and enough body for his tender age, along with a nice width to his quarters. He moved out with purpose.

1ST 574 - Flatcharm Dark Secret at Churchking (Mr D J M Churchard)

There were three litter brothers competing in this class, each displaying different, but lovely qualities. The winner, an 11-month-old, impressed me with his overall balance and shapely outline. I appreciated his head, which had good length, a slight stop, neat ears, and a dark, inquisitive eye. He has a good length neck, well-boned legs, and tight feet. His forechest is developing well, and he has the correct spring of ribs, although he just needs to firm up a little more in his topline. His strong, wide quarters were effectively used when he moved, giving him the edge over his brother for the win today

2ND 634 - Flatcharm Bing A Ling at Shennanjoy (Miss V Scaife)

Another that has much to admire; he is nicely balanced with a pleasing head and a good length of neck. While he does not have quite the bone or feet of the winner, I preferred his topline, which was firm and well-held, along with a good tail set. It was a close decision between these two boys; today, the winner's movement was a bit more together.

238. Retriever (Flat Coated) - Junior Dog Entries: 3 Absentees: 1

1ST 620 - Lamesbella Eugene (Mrs D & Mr A Pawelski)

This is a 17-month-old dog, who is the litter brother to 2nd place. Today, I preferred his overall balance and head compared to his brother's. He has a pleasing head shape with good length, a slight stop, and is very much a one-piece. His strong neck flows into a firm topline, and he has a well-set tail. He has depth and the correct spring in his ribcage, short-coupled, with well-boned limbs. His strong hindquarters enable him to drive effectively around the ring

2ND 592 - Lamesbella Elliot (Mr M & Mrs B Griffin & Grierson)

Happy and outgoing young dog, of good overall shape and size. His head is slightly stronger than his brother's, but it has a good length, a lovely dark eye, and neat ears. He has a clean neck of good length, with sufficient depth and forechest. His topline was not quite as firm today. He moves well in profile

239. Retriever (Flat Coated) - Yearling Dog Entries: 2 Absentees: 0

1ST 604 - Gemswin Innocent Man JW (Mrs S, Mrs G & Mr M Knight & Jacobs)

Smart, 19-month-old dog, I appreciate his overall balance and substance; nothing about him is overdone; everything is very proportionate. He has a distinctly masculine appearance, with strength to his head and dark eyes that convey a gentle yet alert expression. His neck is a good length, and he maintains a firm topline whether standing or moving, complemented by a well-carried, lashing tail. He is well-developed throughout his body and stands on well-boned limbs. Moves cleanly with good parallel width behind.

2ND 639 - Oiyou Waldorf (Mrs L Gordon)

23-month-old dog impressed me with his effortless, flowing gait on the move. He has a slightly more refined appearance compared to the winner. His head shape is pleasing, the ears are well placed, though his eyes still need to darken a little more. He has a good length of neck and has depth to the brisket, along with a firm topline. Today, he tended to carry his tail a bit high while on the move, but he demonstrates good reach and drive.

1ST 571 - Ronevorg King of Attitude (Mrs J & Miss M Campbell & Brown)

2-year-old dog is of a nice stamp. Found him to be very workmanlike, medium-sized, with a nice amount of bone, and enough substance. He has a pleasing, masculine head and a good eye colour. His neck is clean and of good length, flowing into a firm topline. He possesses strong, wide quarters with low-set hocks. He moves tidily and shows himself to advantage.

2ND 608 - Rhiewvalley Ain't Guilty (Miss J Mantle)

2-year-old dog, from a slightly larger mould than the winner. He has a nicely balanced head and a soft expression. His neck is clean, and his chest extends down to the elbow, would like a little more forechest. He possesses lovely bone and tight feet. He maintains a strong, firm topline both when standing and moving, although he tends to fly his tail slightly. His quarters are wide, with a good bend in the stifle, allowing for effective driving action from the rear.

242. Retriever (Flat Coated) - Post Graduate Dog Entries: 6 Absentees: 3

1ST 626 - Telurn Final Attraction among Heatheridge (Ms S Pingree)

Happy and outgoing dog who is approaching 4 years of age. He is well-built, with plenty of bone and substance throughout, and possesses a masculine elegance. He has a balanced head, dark eyes, and well placed neat ears. His brisket is well let down to the elbow, with a good spring to the ribcage. There is a lovely flow to his firm topline, with a correct tail set. I particularly liked his strong, wide quarters and low-set hocks. Once he settled, he moved positively with a ground-covering action.

2ND 594 - Blacklake Lysander for Gayplume (Mrs A M Gulbis)

Charming 4-year-old dog, and quite the chatterbox! He has a well-shaped head with a good length to his foreface, a slight stop, and a dark eye. He is keen and alert to his handler. While he has depth to his chest, he does not quite match the forechest of the winner. Ribs are carried well back, and he has a short, strong loin. His hindquarters are pleasing, being broad and muscular. Today he is not as tidy in front coming towards me, he shows a lovely side gait.

3RD 601 - Braemist Bootlegger at Ravenhall (Mrs S Kearton)

243. Retriever (Flat Coated) - Limit Dog Entries: 7 Absentees: 0

1ST 575 - Flatcharm Griffin Dark at Churchking (Mr D J M Churchard)

4-year-old dog has an impressive outline. When standing, he displays lovely symmetry and balance. I appreciated his overall size, shape, and substance. He has a masculine, one-piece head that possesses the right amount of length and strength, complemented by a kind, dark eye. His neck has good reach, flowing into a firm topline, and his tail is well set and effectively used. With good depth and ribbing. His limbs are well-boned, and he has tight, round feet. Strong, broad hindquarters, which he uses to his advantage when on the move. Although I preferred the front action of the second dog, he exhibits clean, driving rear movement and maintains a lovely outline when viewed from the side.

2ND 565 - Hopevalley Morning Phantom Sgwc (Miss H Bright)

Close decision, as this 5-year-old dog possesses many admirable qualities. He is a well-proportioned dog with flowing lines. He has a lovely head with a soft and gentle expression. Neck is of moderate length, to a firm topline, and he has a well-set tail. I liked his depth and short, strong loin. He has good bone structure and tight feet. Not quite the drive and precision of the winner in the rear today, clean and true in the front, combined with a free and easy stride. He was beautifully presented and well-handled.

1ST 595 - Moontorn Black Magic (Mrs C Harvey)

Deciding between these two lovely dogs was challenging, as I liked them both very much. The winner is an upstanding and impressive 4-year-old black dog with a wonderful outline that is both balanced and flowing. He has a lovely head, with a soft and gentle expression accentuated by his dark eyes. He has a good length of neck and is deep in the brisket, with a well-developed forechest. He maintains a firm topline both when standing and on the move. His well-boned limbs end in super tight feet. This dog effectively uses his strong, wide quarters while moving, powering around the ring in complete harmony with his handler. - RDCC

2ND 580 - Windyhollows Ragged Robin JW (Mr E W, Mrs P J & Miss N E Colson)

I have admired this 3-year-old dog in the past, and my opinion remains unchanged, just nitpicking between him and the winner! He is lovely from any angle, exhibiting substance without being overdone, showing typical masculine elegance. He has a pleasing and well-proportioned head with a kind expression. His topline is firm, and he possesses the right amount of strength and substance throughout his body, with well-turned stifles and low-set hocks. Today, just preferred the movement of the winner. Put down in super coat and condition

1ST 648 – Sh Ch Lizzlog Buzz Lightyear (Mrs L Walker)

Lovely quality, 6-year-old black dog who shows his personality with style and confidence. He has a shapely silhouette that flows seamlessly from one part to the next. He presents a masculine appearance without being overdone, combining masculine racy elegance with substance. His head is well moulded, and one-piece, featuring a dark eye with a hint of mischief. He has a good length of neck that leads into a firm, well-held topline and tail set. His body is well-developed, with a deep brisket and good fill in the forechest. He stands on strong, well-boned limbs, and his wide quarters, along with a good bend of stifle, enable him to cover ground effortlessly while displaying enthusiasm and drive. He is beautifully presented in a gleaming black coat. DCC & BOB

2ND 562 - Ch Clandrift Bring Me Sunshine JW Kcwgc Sgwc ShCEx OSW (Mrs V Bowen)

Smart 3-year-old dog, well-built, athletic, with the right balance of strength and raciness. He has a lovely headpiece, beautifully moulded, a good length to his foreface, a slight stop, neat ears, and dark, inquisitive eyes. His neck is of pleasing length, with a well-developed forechest and correctly ribbed body. Unfortunately, today he occasionally lost his topline. His hindquarters are strong and muscular. He was a little in his underwear. On the move, he is a free-flowing and powerful mover.

246. Retriever (Flat Coated) - Veteran Dog Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1ST 573 - Ronevorg I Believe in Santa at Montechor (Mrs J & Mrs M Campbell & Hessing)

This is a very smart 7-year-old dog who is utterly unaware that he is a veteran. He shows himself with pizzazz and enthusiasm. He is undeniably masculine, with good bone and the right amount of strength throughout his body without being overdone. When standing, he presents a pleasing outline that is nicely balanced and in proportion. I liked his well-filled forechest and the depth of his brisket. He maintained his topline both while standing and on the move, using his strong, wide quarters to drive smoothly and effortlessly around the ring - BVIB

2ND 629 - Telurn Can't Touch This VW Sgwc (Mrs B Reynolds)

Super 8-year-old dog that I have done well for in the past. He is an honest dog with a shapely outline that is balanced and unexaggerated. He displays lovely maturity throughout his body, and is shown in full bloom. His neck and topline flow beautifully into a correctly set tail. He has an admirable forechest with good depth to his brisket, and standing on well-boned limbs. His footfall is accurate whilst maintaining his outline, just not quite the rear drive of the winner today.

1ST 606 - Badcall Midwinter Dream at Inchstellie (Mrs F Mackessack-Leitch)

Appreciated the racy, but with enough substance outline of the 15-month-old bitch, as she displayed lovely overall balance and proportions. She has a pleasing head with a beautiful dark eye. Her neck, of good length, flows into a firm topline. Forechest is well-developed, and the brisket is of good depth. She has broad hindquarters. It was a pleasure to watch her move; she exhibited a free-flowing style and evident drive. The partnership with her handler is commendable and clearly shown in their performance. I was delighted to see this duo achieve SBB Group 4. Congratulations to them!

2ND 609 - Hopevalley Morning Minuet (Mrs D R Markillie)

There is much to admire on this 8-month-old bitch. She did give a lot away in maturity today, but she is a quality puppy with a pleasing outline when standing. She has a pretty, feminine head which is nicely moulded, dark eye, neat ears, and a gentle expression. Her neck is of good length, and her topline is firm with a well-set tail. The brisket is well-let-down, and she has nicely sprung ribs for her age. She also has a lovely side gait, though she just needs to tighten up in front. She was well presented and handled.

Very feminine head, nicely moulded, and mischievous dark eyes. Clean neck of good length, onto well boned limbs. Shows good development throughout the body for her age, and a well held topline.
