BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL (09/05/2025)

My sincerest thanks to the committee for inviting me to award my first set of CCs in the breed here today. The National has to be one of my favourite shows of the year with their forward-thinking committee who always go above and beyond to make it a truly exhibitor-friendly experience. We were blessed with excellent weather and lucky enough to be scheduled in the large pavilion tent with a spacious grass ring. My personal thanks to my 2 stewards who kept the ring running like clockwork and made my day all the more enjoyable.

Not a representative entry today in comparison to our championship show entries over recent years but I was pleased overall with the quality of the exhibits present. All of which being of sound temperament and in excellent muscular condition. It was also interesting to have examples of all 4 recognised colours present today. My thanks to the sporting exhibitors for their applause for every class.

Class 1268 SBD (1 Entry) Abs: 0

1st: Battsrock Are You Ready. Brown, presented in excellent muscular condition. A very honest male with no exaggerations, medium-sized with proportionate bone. Liked his head shape from the side with slight tapering to the muzzle and thin lips. Very good width of skull, amber eye colour and big nostrils. Strong neck of good length that flows into a decent forehand with good fill in front and straight limbs. Strongly made through his body with excellent ribbing, firm topline and correct underline. Moderately angled in the rear, standing with firm hocks at all times. A sound mover from all angles with a smooth action on the go-round. Would prefer him a little less proud with his tail. Not in his best coat today but possesses the correct texture.

Three very different males.

1st: Battsrock Are You Ready. See previous class.

2nd: Muireatai Teris Love. Brown, presenting a typical shape on the stack, he too was shown in hard condition. Really liked his head, possessing the required strength through skull and muzzle without coarseness. Liked his medium, high set ears. Powerful neck that flows into a well-made forehand assembly. Good leg of length to body depth proportions. Good spring of rib with correct topline & underline. Good bend of stifle but would prefer him a little shorter from hip to hock. Sound mover once settled but tends to curl his tail. Not in full coat today but of decent texture.

3rd: Oakmarsh Haunting Howl (a.i.)

Class 1274 OD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Sh Ch Chesepi Waco. Brown, presented a little heavier than I prefer today. Having judged this dog at one of his first shows several years ago, I am pleased to see he has gone on to fulfil his early promise and gain a well deserved title. Impresses for his strong bone, good overall body proportions and correct breed type. Excellent masculine head with good width of skull, high set ears and strong jaws with thin lips. Strong neck that flows into well laid shoulders with a good return of upper arm. Straight limbs and excellent feet. Excellent spring of rib with correct topline and enough underline. Powerful hindquarters with correct bend of stifle and medium length rear pasterns. His croup is a shade steep but he correctly carries his tail at all times. Goes well from all angles on the move while maintaining his shape. Not in his best coat today but definitely the best texture of the male entry today. My pleasure to award him the CC & BOS.

2nd: Pixiesrock Mr Tumnus By Bleyos JW. Brown, from a slightly longer and more refined cast than 1 but still presents a breed-typical shape in profile. His head greatly appealed with strength through his skull and muzzle while maintaining the correct shape and thin lips. His high set ears are of ideal size and thickness of leather. Reachy neck that flows into excellent shoulders, very good proportions of body depth to leg length. Well sprung ribs with correct topline and underline. Well angulated hindquarters with wide thighs and medium rear pasterns. A really good mover all round going with a smooth action showing good reach/drive. Presented in full coat but would prefer better texture. RCC

Class 1275 VD (2 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Takoda Nathan. Sedge, liked him for size and overall breed type. Excellent head with correct shape to muzzle and thin lips. Moderate but balanced angulation fore/aft with correct length of leg. Liked his spring of rib and bone for size. Definitely possesses medium length rear pasterns. Belies his veteran years on the move going with great pace and maintaining his shape. Good coat.

2nd: Chesepi Ulysses. Deadgrass, from a much stronger mould overall compared to 1. Really liked his strength of bone. Strong head with width between the ears and big nostrils. Moderate angulation fore/aft. Excellent fill in front with typical topline. Steady mover all round. Another dropping his coat but of correct texture.

Class 1276 SBB (4 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Oakmarsh Laurel JW. Liked her very much for size and proportionate bone. She has such a breed-typical outline, no mistaking that she is definitely a Chesapeake! Prettiest of heads with correct muzzle shape, eye colour and ear set. Would not want anymore stop. Really liked her balance of angulation both fore/aft with correct length of leg. Correct topline and underline, enough spring of rib for age with time to develop further with maturity. She still retains the breed-typical medium rear pastern combined with well bent stifles. One of the best coats of today’s entry with the desired oiliness. Shows great freedom on the move as well as being sound going/coming while also using her tail well. My pleasure to award her the RCC, BSB and see her take Special Beginners Group 2.

2nd: Oakmarsh Land Of Promise Of Roguehart. Brown, litter sister to 1 with many similar attributes. A smaller bitch but with good bone for her size and a breed-typical shape. Another ultra-feminine head with correct depth and shape to muzzle, width between the ears and correctly sized ear leathers. Good length of neck that flows into a well laid shoulder, just not quite the upper arm of 1. Excellent straight limbs with correct hare feet. Correct body proportions throughout but just needing time to spring a little more in rib. Excellent rear angulation with super width through her quarters. Loved her zest for life on the move, she covered the ground well and maintained her shape once settled. Sporting an excellent coat in density and texture.

3rd: Oakmarsh Kingsley Adsila

Class 1277 MPB (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Battsrock Ashes To Ashes. Ash, what a cracker! Immediately appealed for her balance and excellent breed type. Beautifully shaped head with good width of skull for age, correct stop and thin, non-pendulous lips. Such a textbook neck and forehand assembly with super fill in front for age. Strongly boned, gun barrel straight limbs and excellent feet. Well bodied up for age with typical topline and underline. Excellent rear angulation with wide thighs, correctly bent stifles and medium rear pastern. She is quite something on the move. For a baby she demonstrates excellent coordination and firmness going/coming with a free and effortless side gait, carrying her head and tail correctly. All of this wrapped in a dense and correctly textured coat. She must go all the way with a bit to spare! My pleasure to award her CC, BOB & BPIB.

Class 1280 PGB (3 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Melseed Dont Stop Believing. Brown, liked her medium-size while possessing excellent bone. Typical head shape with strong jaws. Would not want her ears any bigger. Very good overall balance of angulation both fore/aft. Excellent width through her quarters. Still has some maturing to do through her middle. Her handler worked hard to contain her enthusiasm on the move but she did show glimpses of good reach & drive. Her coat is of very good texture. Time is on her side.

2nd: Oakmarsh Land Of Promise Of Roguehart - See previous class.

3rd: Oakmarsh Kingsley Adsila

Class 1281 LB (3 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: Amore Of Ridsome (Imp It). Brown, a smaller style of bitch but so very appealing in many departments. Scores in head shape with correct width of skull, high set ears and strength through her muzzle. She is a lesson in correct neck and forehand with well laid shoulders and corresponding length of upper arm. I would prefer a shade more length of leg for ideal balance. Excellent spring of rib. Symmetrical rear angulation with correct croup and tail set. On the move she goes with a smooth action and is absolutely sound going/coming. Not in her best coat today, a serious contender for top honours.

2nd: Oakmarsh Haunting Melody (a.i.). Brown, bigger overall than 1 but very honest in her construction. Correct width to skull and muzzle with high set ears. Strong neck into decent forehand with excellent length of leg. Mature through her body. Would prefer a shade more bend of stifle for ideal balance. Good width through her quarters. A sound and free mover from all angles. Coat is dense of good texture. Excellent temperament.

Class 1282 OB (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Muireatai Miracle Of Dreams. Brown, pleasing overall type and shape. Really liked her head and expression. Decent bone for size with good length of leg. Good reach of neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm. Plenty of body with well sprung ribs. Liked her well defined underline. Wide over her pelvis but just a shade too much length from hip to hock. Covers the ground with good carriage on the move. Coat was a bit thin today in comparison to my principle winners.

Class 1283 VB (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: Sh Ch Oakmarsh Dancing Diva VW. Brown, what a spritely ‘young lady’ she is! Liked her body proportions and shape very much. Pretty head with gradual tapering to muzzle and the best ear set and size of the day. Reachy neck into a well made forehand. Excellent length of leg, would prefer shorter and tighter front pasterns. Excellent depth of brisket and well sprung ribs. Well off for hind angulation with width over her quarters. Excellent coat density and texture. A very good mover all round who carries herself well, BV.
