Scottish Kennel Club

Breed: Pyrenean Mountain Dog

I always enjoy judging this lovely breed where the dogs are such charmers and the exhibitors are most sporting. I appreciated the entry and the opportunity to go over the dogs, most of whom were new to me. All had double dew claws & were very well presented.

1st) Mangrove Xiphos Spartan Swordsman at Darmaror (ai) (Imp Bel) (Lady S Reilly), a smart & upstanding puppy, already well grown for his age. I liked his overall shape and outline, excellent head and eye, good forehand & chest, firm topline & tidy hindquarters. A little careless with his hind action at times but a very promising young man. Very free & easy in profile, holding his shape as he went. Ch quality. BPIB.

2nd) Kalkasi Purely by Chance (Mr I & Mrs Y Baverstock), another puppy who is a few months younger than the winner and doesn’t quite have the confidence and carefree attitude of him as yet. He too is a really lovely puppy & there is so little to want to change about him, and I did feel he may well be the winner on first inspection. Very equal to the winner in all respects I felt, but just not using himself to full advantage on the move today as his construction would suggest he might otherwise do. I imagine a few months of experience & when he gets his mind to the job in hand, he will be a strong contender & he is a very exciting prospect. Lovely puppy.

1st) Ch Kalkasi Just Because JW (Mr I & Mrs Y Baverstock), this was a very interesting class to judge & this chap rather grew on me as the proceedings went on. Really admired his head and eye, super neck and shoulders, excellent depth to his chest & super ribbing and topline. Tidy hindquarters which he used well on the move & he returned true in front. He is not the largest of males, but he is functional, sound and a very unassuming dog who I admired greatly. A real pleasure to judge him. Presented in first class order and so well handled. BD & BOB.

2nd) Ch Charibere Simply The Sequel at Kaianna JW (Mrs C & Mr A J Kenyon & Ward) this was the winner on first glance as he can’t fail to draw the eye being upstanding & certainly no denying his sex. Very imposing dog, marginally preferred the head of the winner; but this one too is very well constructed and all of a piece. Excellent forehand, firm topline & good hindquarters. Like most of the entry; accurate on the move with super footfall. RBD & I am sure I could change them around on another day. Expertly handled and presented.

3rd) Pafaxen Rewrite The Stars (Mrs N Jasper)

Special Beginners Dog

1st) Pafaxen Rewrite The Stars (Mrs N Jasper), 3rd behind the two lovely Champions in open which was no disgrace by any means, having beaten another Champion and one I have done very well in the past. I liked this chap a lot, his head and eye are good, he is a little long cast for perfect balance but he has good shoulders and decent chest, and used himself well on the move but lost his topline a little in profile. Very sympathetically handled.

1st) Kalkasi As If by Magic (Mr I & Mrs Y Baverstock), a gorgeous youngster with Champion written all over her. Very good head and eye, so expressive and feminine. Loved her neck and shoulders, good chest & excellent ribbing. Well made rear & she used herself very well on the move, wheeling her tail at times. I considered her further against the other bitches here & again in BP, perhaps she can come up on the leg a little as yet but she is a real prospect for the future I thought.

1st) Charibere Reason to Dream at Kaianna JW (Mrs C & Mr A J Kenyon & Ward), two good bitches headed this class with not a lot between them really. Admired the eye and expression of this one, excellent shoulders and upperarm & enough chest, well ribbed back and kept her topline standing and moving, very tidy up and back & kept her outline on the go around; free and easy and looked a picture. Lots to like & superbly handled. BB.

2nd) Pafaxen A Million Dreams JW (Mr R & Miss C Bamford & Church), close up and a very beautiful type to really ‘fill’ the eye. Excellent shape and outline and she is very well headed. To go over, there is little to want to change, I felt the winner was marginally better in shoulder & returned to me a little cleaner, but in all other respects they were most equal and I admired them both for their qualities. Superbly handled and presented. RBB.

3rd) Kalkasi Just Imperial at Lakamoni (M Flounders)
