Breed: German Wirehaired Pointer

It was a pleasure to judge German Wirehaired Pointers and I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the committee for the invitation. My appreciation also goes to the exhibitors for presenting their dogs and accepting their placings with such sportsmanship. Special thanks to my stewards, Chris and Linda Pack, whose efficiency and organisation ensured the ring ran smoothly throughout.

In assessing the entry, I was looking for an athletic, functional dog, slightly longer than tall, with balanced proportions, good ground‑covering movement, and the correct harsh, wiry coat that defines the breed. For me, tight compact feet are also essential to complete the correct overall picture. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to go over each dog and there were some difficult decisions.

Thank you once again to everyone who made the day such a pleasure.

Puppy Dog (1/0)

1 Drahtjager Aquamarine vom Fenghar (Mrs M Campbell)

A 7‑month‑old of pleasing size. He has a balanced head with hazel eyes and is a little longer in muzzle at this stage, which I’m sure will balance as he matures. Good length of neck, elbows held close to the body, and a straight front with decent bone. He maintains a solid topline on the move, though he just needs a little more time to settle behind and develop his drive.

Junior Dog (2/0)

1 Beanalrem Gwyndu (Miss & Mr Morris & Evans)

Black and white male of full, masculine size. He has a good head with a typical expression, balanced in proportion to the body, and with the desirable oval, hazel-toned eye. Excellent layback of shoulder and well-set withers give him a balanced outline. Once settled, he moves well and holds a firm topline. His croup has the correct gentle slope leading to a well-set tail, carried correctly. Good width over the hips and well-boned throughout, giving him substance and strength. Reserve best dog.

2 Reajeager Stieg (Dr A Gloudeman)

Liver and white, an honest and workmanlike type. He has good, tight feet with the correct shape, well boned throughout and pasterns that show the slight slope, giving him soundness. Needs to settle a little on the move to get the best out of him.

Post Graduate Dog (1/0)

1st Glenquin Major at Yohenoak (Mr & Mrs S Robson)

Black and white male with a good head, eye and expression, complemented by well-set ears. He shows good bone and holds a solid topline both standing and on the move. Tail of good length. The coat is of correct harsh wire texture and was well presented. He gave his handler a bit of a challenge on the move today.

Open Dog (6/0)

1 Sh Ch/ir Sh Ch/int Sh Ch Beechillawn Raspberry Sorbet Cjw22 Cw22/23 Cen Ch Cen JW Cenw Jch (Mr D & Mrs K Donnelly) A liver and white dog I have admired from the ring side and today he did not disappoint. An excellent medium-sized typical dog, he has an honest type head and isn’t overdone anywhere. Good shoulders and chest. Really appreciated his balanced length to heigh ratio. Good width to his rear and is well boned. Was true on the move both coming and going and drove well in profile. Pleased to award him the Best Dog and Best of Breed.

2 Ir Sh Ch Beechillawn Break The Mould (IKC) Cpw'24 Int/ir/nld Jch Dw'24 Djw'24 (Mr P & Mrs D & Mr S Lovatt & Lovatt & Gettings) Another liver and white male and many of positive comments about 1 apply, I noted he was from the same breeder. Good head ratio and strong neck leading into well-set shoulders. Well boned with tight feet and a solid topline. He lacked the drive shown by 1 today and wasn’t as enthusiastic on the move when called back in for Reserve Best Dog

Junior Bitch (2/1)

1 Beanalren Grapevine (Miss H & Mrs J Vine & Hassell)

Liver and white 17month old, good head and neck, into well laid shoulders. The chest was deep and in proportion to the body, with deep ribs, slight tuck up loin. Well-bent stifle and straight hocks. Good coat of correct texture, and she moved well when settled, particularly up and down.

Post Graduate Bitch (2/1)

1 M Frivilje at Cappercleugh (Imp Nor) (Miss J S Hogg)

An honest liver and white in firm condition, with a tight wire coat and I appreciated her size and correct length to height ratio. A good chest and shoulder placement and well ribbed, with strong and well muscled thighs. Moves well in to and from and in profile. Was also best special beginner.

Open Bitch (7/3)

1 Sh Ch Glenquin Athena (Mr P, Mrs L & Miss N Johnston)

7 year old liver and white bitch, balanced on the stack and covers the ground on the move, strong in profile. She has a good length of neck flowing into well laid shoulders, with well boned forelegs and tight, well arched feet. Her strong, level topline is maintained both standing and moving, complemented by a well sprung ribcage and firm loin. Best bitch.

2 Ir Sh Ch Beechillawn Mint Chip Ir Jch Cjw22 Cent JW Cent W TAF (Mr P & Mrs D & Mr S Lovatt & Lovatt & Gettings)

Black and white who has a lot to appreciate in type and soundness. An honest girl of moderate size with a typical head and dark eye, nice shoulder placement tight elbows with straight legs with ample bone. Well ribbed into her tucked-up loin. Appreciated her action but did not quite match the drive of 1 today.

Veteran Bitch (4/1)

I found this class the hardest to judge and I felt the ring did not enable some of the bitches to fully settle on the move, and they would have benefitted from more space.

1 Ir Sh Ch Kimmax Who Kares Wins JW (Mr D & Mrs K Donnelly) Black and White moderate size bitch. Good head proportions and dark eye, well set ears. Strong neck, good placement of her withers. She has enough bone and her coat was in good harsh condition. The most settled on the move in the class. Reserve Best Bitch

2 Sh Ch Bareve by The Book (Miss H & Mrs J Vine & Hassell) Was a close decision with 1 today. Liver and white bitch, Good head with a dark hazel oval eye, moderate stop and balance proportions. Really like her neck into shoulders which are well laid and a deep, well ribbed chest. Appreciated her rear angles and tail set.
