Driffield Championship Dog Show

Breed: Gundog Group

Firstly, a huge thanks to the hard working committee for inviting me to judge the Gundog group at this friendly show. They had gone out of their way to provide a positive experience for exhibitors and judges alike. The brave decision to run two shows simultaneously was appreciated by nearly all of those present. Inevitably, there were slight problems with the running order but these were dealt with efficiently and professionally. Congratulations to all involved with such an undertaking. We thank you.

I was delighted with the overall quality of the group and made an initial shortlist of nine. I later discovered, unsurprisingly that all were carrying their titles already. Several of the others were super examples of their respective breeds but it was a matter of splitting hairs. The quality was such that a couple of those failing to make the cut had won top honours under me on previous occasions.

I shortlisted the German Shorthaired Pointer who impressed in outline particularly when stacked, the Italian Spinone who is so good to go over, the Labrador Retriever who I have previously admired and continues to impress, the American Cocker who combines substance and style effectively and the Welsh Springer who I have previously awarded top honours and did not disappoint today.

After a further opportunity to assess their movement, I awarded the top spot to Rahman and Todd’s Cocker Spaniel Sh Ch Zheridons Blanche who filled my eye today. She is full of quality, well presented in good coat and handled to advantage. She did not put a foot wrong. Second and pushing her all of the way was Siddle and Medeiros’ Pointer Sh Ch Wilchrimane Frankly Darlin who I have previously admired from the ringside and appreciate even more now I have gone over her. She moves so freely in profile covering the ring effortlessly. Group three was the German Wired Haired Pointer Sh Ch Caldewriver Storm N Teacup for Katillien who I awarded BPIS at National Gundog in 2023. So pleasing to see that she has fulfilled that early potential. So honest and true both standing and on the move. In super body and condition. On top form here. The fourth spot went to the Chesapeake Bay retriever Mahon Hunns and Newton’s Sh Ch Arnac Bay Huron at Bergelle. A breed that needs to be gone over to be fully appreciated and this lad is so full of type and quality. Well developed and in hard condition. He covered the ground with precision and drive.
