An honour to judge this most prestigious of breed shows. A good entry in the current climate and I was very pleased with my winners. Temperaments were first class although there was one untypical episode, something that is thankfully unusual in our breed. Presentation was high quality; most being trimmed to advantage and in clean condition. Shoulder construction continues to be a problem, most had decent layback of shoulder but a lack of length of forearm does restrict reach on the move, especially when viewed in profile. I was also disappointed with the number of incorrect bites. I do not mean the odd misplaced tooth but the actual bite was incorrect in quite a few cases. This is something to take into consideration when planning a breeding programme. On the positive side, it was good to see that rear angulation has improved with no excessive angulation which ruins the outline of our wonderful breed. My co judge, Andy Swannell and I could not agree on Best In Show, we called for the services of the referee, Christine Normansell who selected the male for BIS, we agreed that the Females should be awarded Best Puppy and Best Veteran.
Dogs
Minor Puppy (5) Good to see some very promising puppies from different bloodlines.
1 Neath’s Albadora Total Madness
Very promising 7 month old b/b Strong head with good balance, having good length of muzzle and defined occiput. Well boned through with straight front legs. Deep, well sprung ribs for one so young. Correct rear angulation He was shown in good coat and moved freely holding his top line well. Best Puppy Dog.
2 Szal’s Goldbirch Northern Jazz
Another youngster with plenty going for him. Mature and well bodied, he has a good head which will get even better as it breaks. Correct eye colour. Good reach of neck. Well ribbed up with plenty of substance. He too has good rear angulation without being over done in any way. Well presented. Just preferred the hind movement of the winner.
3 Wilson’s Sharnyx Reyncloud at Lucanix
Puppy (5)
1 Williams’ Bournehouse Daydreamer
Well presented 10 month old o/b in good coat and condition. Balanced in head with kind eye and typical soft expression. Well off for bone with straight front legs. He has good width and depth to his chest and is strong over his quarters. Move with enthusiasm, holding his top line well.
2 Sharnyx Reyncloud at Lucanix
Third in the previous class; a little more settled here. Classic in head with good proportions and a correct bite. Good reach of neck leading to sloping shoulders. Short coupled. He has good rear angulation and his hocks are well let down. He moved straight both ways but lacked the finish of the winner here. At only six months, he should mature well.
3 Carr’s Bournehouse Dare to Dream
Veteran (3)
1 Arkley’s Sh Ch Hartsett Flash Dance
Now 8 years and looking so well for his age. Shown in good body and in full coat. Lovely head of correct proportions. He has a strong neck of good length leading to correct shoulder angulation. Correct in front, his elbows are nicely tucked in. Firm in topline with well-muscled loins. He has a good bend of stifle and hocks are well let down. He moved truly showing reach and drive.
2 Lawson’s Wansleydale Dorian Gray
I have seen this boy many times over the years. He is now seven and still looking fit and well. Pleasing in head with well-defined stop and dark eyes. Strong neck of good length. He is straight in front with plenty of bone and good width to his chest. Firm in top line and strong over his quarters. He moved well enough just lacked the animation of the winner.
3 Loakes and Romeo Deiste’s Goldbirch Wings of Glory for Hopevalley
Junior (5, 1 abs)
1 Danks Kemish and Littlechild’s Ravensett Just An Illusion with Alolfrana
Eye catching 14 months o/b with refined head and well set ears. Dark eyes of correct shape. He has a clean neck of good length, well boned front still maintaining that desired elegance. Good length of rib with decent depth for his age. He has well developed quarters and moved well once steadied. Should go on to do well. Closely followed by his brother.
2 Stead’s Ravensett Illusionist of Settavista
Another promising youngster that I have seen before. He is now beginning to look a lot more balanced having come up on his quarters and started to fill out. Well balanced head with plenty of work below his eyes. Strong neck of good length. He has a good depth and length to his chest. Well angulated quarters. He moved well once settled. One that will only improve with time.
3 Pearson’s Bournehouse Augustus at Yessandi
Yearling (7,1)
A difficult class to judge as I found a couple of mouths that were not acceptable. This did not apply to the winners!
1 Derry, Schoneville and Williamson’s Hawklawn Hazzard County at Balvenie
Won here for his overall balance and soundness. He will take time to fully develop but everything is there to see. He is very correct in head with good depth to his muzzle. Strong in neck which leads to well angulated shoulders with correct length of upper arm. Well sprung ribs of good depth. He is firm over the loins giving a correct top line. Strong over his quarters with good width to his thighs. Moving correctly to edge this class.
2 Ciaputa’s Ravensett Cote D’Azur
Flashy O/b who catches the eye immediately. Lovely outline standing with classic head, clean neck and well laid shoulders. He is developing well in body and is firm over the loins. He has decent strength to his quarters. In good body and super coat. He moved well going away from me but I preferred the more precise movement of the winner today.
3 Goutorbe’s Wansleydale Beekeeper at Redhara
Novice (4,1)
1 Ravensett Illusionist at Settavista
2 Bournehouse Augustus at Yessandi
Third in the junior class, not as forward as those ahead of him there. Balanced head with good stop and kind expression. Low set ears. Clean neck of good length. Firm in top line. He has well-turned stifles and hocks are nicely let down. Moved well in profile just needs to tighten coming towards me but time should correct that.
3 Wilkinson Sargeant’s Walshaw Can’t Stop Dancing
Graduate (5,1)
1 Osman’s Bournehouse Sirocco Over Marisolo
Lovely two year old tricolour who is so good to go over. Balanced in head with gentle expression, clean neck of good length adds to the desired elegant outline. Well laid shoulders, good depth to his chest and length to his ribs. He has a firm level top line and good rear angulation with width to his thighs. Well presented in good coat. Looked well today.
2 Arkley’s Tattersett Blue Lord
Lovely type of b/b with plenty to like. Not as forward as the winner but has many attributes. Clean and elegant in outline with correct head proportions with defined stop and occiput. Strong neck leads to sloping shoulders. Firm in top line with correct couplings. He has strong quarters with plenty of width to his second thigh. Not as positive behind as the winner here.
3 Warrington’s Culverwell Sundancer
Post grad (3)
1 Montell’s Culverwell Super Scrumpy
A new one to me and certainly appealed here. This mature and well bodied o/b presented a lovely balanced outline on the stack and did not disappoint on closer inspection. Strong but well-proportioned head with plenty of work around his eyes. Good width to his front and well ribbed with both length and depth giving the desired heart room. He has good rear angulation and width of thigh. Moved true from all angles. Considered him for top honours.
2 Stewart and Quenby’s Tattersett Stolen Silver
Another good one. Balanced in outline with good angulation fore and rear. Super head with correct stop, dark eyes and low set ears. Firm in top line with good width to his quarters, his hocks are well let down. Moved well enough, just preferred the tail carriage of the winner here.
3 Thomas’ Kanietter Sarka
Mid Limit (2)
1 Darley’s Severnsett Gold Sovereign
Lovely o/b who looked well when stacked and was good to go over. Lovely head with shape below his eyes, Neck is clean, arched and of good length. His shoulders slope nicely and he has enough width to his front. Well bodied with firm couplings and good depth of chest. He has plenty of strength to his quarters and moved correctly.
2 Whittington’s Juledeane Line of Duty
5Year old o/b with classic head shape, gentle expression and low ears. Well boned. He has good layback of shoulder and was presented in good order. Just felt the winner was better in rib and more precise on the move today.
Limit (6,1)
1 Hepburn’s Tattersett Rainbow Legacy
Well balanced orange boy with compact outline but still retaining the desired elegance. Correctly proportioned head with defined stop and occiput. Strong neck leads to correctly angulated forequarters. His chest is of good width and depth. He is well ribbed back and correctly coupled. He has well-turned stifles and good with of thigh. He moved well once steadied.
2 Wilkinson Sargeant’s Phenset Firestorm
This boy looked so well standing and caught my eye at the start of the class. He has a well-shaped head with kind eyes and good length of muzzle. He is well boned through with good ribs and strong quarters. He was presented in good coat and condition, I just preferred the movement and tail carriage of my winner today.
3 Johnston’s Wansleydale Beguiled of Loonbrae
Open (8)
Lovely class headed by three worthy Champions, any of whom I would have gladly awarded a CC to.
1 Darley’s Sh Ch Severnsett Firecracker
This boy had to be on top form today and certainly was. I have previously awarded him a RCC and the following year, RBIS at National Gundog. Today, I felt that he was even better than those previous times. He manages to combine enough substance with the desired elegance. Masculine head with good length of muzzle, plenty of shape and defined stop. He has a kind expression. Straight, well boned front with width to his chest yet elbows are tucked in. Good width and depth to his ribs giving plenty of heart room. He is firm in top line and has super rear angulation with hocks which are well let down. Presented in good coat and correct body. He moved well to win this class, the CC and BIS.
2 Taylor’s Sh Ch Wansleydale Maybee
Another out of the top drawer. Lovely type with plenty of style which he has passed on to several of the youngsters here today. Well shaped refined head with dark eyes and low set ears. He is well balanced in body having good angulation both fore and rear. He is well ribbed and firm and short in loin. He was presented to advantage and moved well making good use of his quarters. Pleased to add another RCC to his collection.
