BELFAST DOG SHOW SOCIETY

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER CRITIQUE

SATURDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER 2025

JUDGE: CLARE ROBINSON-COX (HAMASON)

Thank you to the Society for inviting me to judge their show, my first C.C. appointment. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and my thanks go to Brian, my Ring Steward, who did an excellent job of keeping everything on track and the ring running smoothly throughout the day.

The ring was of an excellent size with a good, solid, even floor which gave all exhibits an excellent opportunity to show their movement at its best, hopefully. The lighting was also good and the hall temperature felt perfect to me – not too warm or cold. All in all – an excellent venue.

A couple of general observations about the Breed in general is that some exhibits, whilst looking wonderful from ringside, on closer assessment of their bites, some canines were, in my opinion, most definitely not placed correctly. This is one of the reasons why Staffords are at Category 2 on Breed Watch and we, as judges, must be vigilant not to reward such exhibits as this is a health and welfare issue, not just a fault / virtue decision.

Coat and body condition in the main was very good, though a couple of exhibits would have benefited from a good grooming and a little more exercise. However, in my decision-making, I tried to balance out these elements which could be improved upon against those elements, such as overall conformation and movement of an exhibit, which cannot be changed. A well-constructed dog will not become an even better specimen of a dog by having the shiniest coat in the world. Conversely, a dog that has poor construction is not a good dog just because it is thought to be in fit, hard condition and turned out with a shiny coat and a nice lead and collar. We owe it to this wonderful Breed to make ensure that the judges and breeders amongst us are rewarding and promoting the appropriate virtues that are essential to keeping our Breed true to type and healthy into the future.

Overall I was delighted with my entry, both in terms of numbers and quality. All of my winners were, in my opinion, superb examples of our Breed, and I would be happy to have any of them on my sofa!

From an entry of 55 exhibits, making 68 entries in total and with only 4 absentees in total, my winners and class placings were as follows:

MINOR PUPPY DOG 2/0

1ST – NOUCAMP THE HOOLIGAN (Pigott & Murphy) 06.01.2025 – Ch Kamaristaffs Royal Ransom At Bowtmans x Noucamp The Dominatrix

Dark brindle dog who was presented in great condition. Head of good proportions with a correct bite, dark eyes and eye rims and neat ears giving him a pleasing expression. Strong neck leading to good shoulder placement, a decent width of chest with brisket developing nicely for his age. He has a straight front with plenty of bone and lovely, neat feet. Body shape as it should be for a youngster, close-coupled and topline OK. Stood four square giving a pleasing overall outline when stacked and moved well for one so young.

2nd – NOUCAMP THE EGYPTIAN KING (Pigott & Murphy) 06.01.2025 – Ch Kamaristaffs Royal Ransom At Bowtmans x Noucamp The Dominatrix

Litter brother to my first place and possessing very similar virtues, making the decision a very close one and I am sure they will change places on a regular basis as they move forwards. A slightly taller pup than his litter brother but possessing good bone and having a good straight front with tidy feet. I preferred the head shape and cleaner expression on the first placed pup today but this Boy also has good pigmentation, neat ears, dark eyes and a decent expression. A good, strong neck leading to a wide front and another whose body is developing as expected for his age. Also moved well today.

PUPPY DOG 5/0

1st – JOJALANE I DRINK WINE (Bassford-Lane) 16.10.2024 – Waystaff Strikes Mayhem x TNT Edition Quaesitum At Jojalane (IMP SVN)

A stunning red and white dog who was presented in great physical condition for a youngster. He has a great skull to muzzle ratio with a correct scissor bite. He has dark, expressive eyes that really draw you in with a glint of mischief. He has neat ears that he carries well, giving him a lovely expression. He has a dark mask and clean lips and large teeth. He has a strong neck leading to a super front with a good width of chest and decent bone. He is a top size dog but his overall bone and substance ensure he is balanced and pleasing to look at from all angles. He is close-coupled with a level topline when stacked and on the move. He moved well with power and drive and carried his tail correctly. I was pleased to award him BEST PUPPY DOG and BEST PUPPY IN BREED and he was certainly pushing hard for top honours on the day, but I am sure these will not be long in coming. I was absolutely delighted to watch him go on to take TERRIER PUPPY GROUP 2 under judge, Mr E Paterson – well done!

Predominantly white dog with a red patch on one ear. Stood alone in this class but stood out none-the-less. This Boy for me oozes breed type with a super clean head and expression and a strong, well-boned dog when viewed from all angles as well as on the move. He has a great head shape with well pronounced cheek bumps and a pleasing skull to muzzle ratio. He has the darkest of eyes, clean lips and his ears are OK giving him a lovely expression. He has a strong neck leading to a wide, straight front and neat feet set off the overall picture. He has a level topline when stacked and on the move. He is close coupled giving him an overall compact and balanced outline. He has a good depth of brisket and a nice spring of rib, tapering correctly into his loins. His overall shape is very pleasing when viewed from above or from the side with an appropriate lightness in his loins without being overdone in any way. He moved well both ways with a correctly set and carried tail. He had power and drive when on the move and covered the ground effortlessly. Pleased to award him RESERVE DOG C.C.
