Gundog Society Of Wales

Breed: Italian Spinone

I thoroughly enjoyed this appointment. I extend my gratitude to the Society for inviting me, my stewards Martin & Ken for their humour & efficiency and to the exhibitors for their entries and their sportsmanship on the day.

While overall I was impressed with the heads, construction, bone and feet across the majority of the entry, I was disappointed to note that 20% of the dogs present had maloclussion – some in just one side of the mouth, others in both sides. That’s a huge percentage and something I feel breeders need to pay heed to – these are gundogs after all, mouths are important. I’ve made the decision not to highlight the dogs with the fault in this critique but judges certainly need to be looking and of course, as per KC requirements, I have reported it to breedwatch.

1ST 422 - Lucoru Fire and Ice for Dewdhala (Mrs D & Mr D Wagh)

This brown roan boy has a lovely head & expression. He has a well angulated front with good depth of chest. Correct topline. He is a shade shorter than square at the moment and his back end needs to tighten up. Excellent thick skin and coat. Super bone and feet. Moved a little erratically.

1ST 407 - Piacente Uomo Saggio (Mr G & Mrs M James)

A smart boy who is a lot more together than 2 at this stage. He has a good head with divergent head planes, good neck into decent shoulders and really good return of upperarm. Good depth of chest with ribs well back and a short loin. Enough angulation behind with good width of second thigh. Lovely thick skin and coat of excellent texture. Moved well just exuberantly and was messing his handler around a little on the stack.

Really liked the shape and make of this dog. He has a super head of correct proportions and divergence. Strong neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upperarm. Correct topline, well angulated rear with good width of second thigh. Excellent thick skin and coat of good texture. Once settled, he moved superbly – accurate in every direction.

2ND 405 - Sanjika Kyros (Mr S, Mrs S & Miss R Griffin)

A squarely made boy of super breed type. I liked the proportions and divergence of his head, just needs his eyes to darken. He is nicely constructed all through with excellent bone and feet. Lovely thick skin, his coat is excellent. In hard, fit muscular condition. Moved well.

1ST 419 - Sosteli Saxon (Miss L Smith)

Brown roan boy with a pleasing head. He is squarely made with a correct topline. Good depth of chest. Good bone and feet. Well angulated rear. Lovely thick skin and his coat was really harsh. Moved nicely in profile, just a little close behind.

1ST 417 - Sh Ch Gradevole Strufolli (Mrs G Robinson)

Another quality brown roan with a lovely head of correct proportions. He is balanced, well constructed all through and beautifully presented. Correct topline and underline. He stands on good bone and feet. Moved soundly just a little lethargically in the challenge so couldn’t go higher today.

 2ND 392 - Osulf Peanuts Barney (Ms N Blanchard)

1ST 414 - Sh Ch Inostricani Bell Ragazzo via Krismoor JW (Miss C J Littlemore)

It is no secret that I love this dog – I’ve used him at stud after all. His head is beautiful. 50:50 proportions, divergent head planes, good eye colour and that large spongy nose! He is a shade longer than square but is beautifully constructed fore and aft with ribs well back and a short loin. Thick skin, coat is excellent texture and he moves accurately in any direction. Good bone and feet. He is presented in perfect condition. A worthy title holder and I was pleased to be able to add another CC & BOB to his tally.

1ST 403 - Sanjika Amika (Mr S, Mrs S & Miss R Griffin)

Won this class as she is a lot more together at this stage. Her head is of correct proportions and divergence. Short, strong neck into a well angulated front. Good depth of chest, ribs well back and short loin. Correct topline. Enough rear angulation. Good bone and feet. Excellent skin and coat. Moves really well and is in super muscular condition for one so young.

2ND 398 - Lucoru Playing with Fire (Mrs L A Coldwell)

This girl is extremely pretty. The most beautiful head and expression. She is nicely put together all through. Still sporting her puppy coat at the moment and she needs to mature and body up but it’s all there, she just needs time. She was moving a little reluctantly at first but once she got going, I could see really accurate movement.

1ST 398 - Lucoru Playing with Fire (Mrs L A Coldwell)

As prev.

2ND 400 - Cartrefyspin Oren Sunburst (Mr M & Mrs B Davies)

Loved the orange roan colouring of this young bitch. She has a decent head with divergence. Excellent skin and coat and nicely presented. She is very raw at the moment. I preferred the overall bone and substance of my winner in this class. Moved well.

1ST 395 - Star at Station (Mrs K J & Mr G Bovio)

I really loved the make of this bitch, she is just my type. She has the most beautiful head with divergent planes. She is nicely constructed all through and has super bone and feet. Excellent skin and coat. She moves really well, covering the ground easily. While her topline and tailset is correct, she carries her tail extremely high on the move which is a shame.

2ND 398 - Lucoru Playing with Fire (Mrs L A Coldwell)

As prev.

1ST 394 - Ilsolo Chewbacca (Mrs K J & Mr G Bovio)

Brown roan of correct shade. Divergent head planes. Good neck into well laid shoulders. Good depth of chest with ribs well back. Correct topline and tailset. Well angulated rear. Excellent bone and substance whilst still retaining her femininity. Moved really well.

2ND 428 - Karankawa Happy Hatter at Cherrybower (Miss L Yarnley)

This bitch has divergent head planes and eyes of good colour. She was lacking in beard which totally spoiled the balance of her head. The rest of her coat was correct so I think the grooming of her head might have been a little “enthusiastic”? Her topline and tailset is correct. Would prefer more bone and tighter feet. Moved well.

1ST 404 - Sanjika Kanga (Mr S, Mrs S & Miss R Griffin)

Won this class and later the RCC on her movement. This is a robust, workmanlike bitch who is beautifully constructed. Her head/skull is 50:50 and her planes are divergent. Pleasing expression. Excellent skin and coat and she has super bone and feet. Correct topline and underline. She covers the ground with drive, really demonstrating that she’s built correctly.

 2ND 397 - Lucoru Perpetual Spring (Mrs L A Coldwell)

Slightly longer cast than my winner. This girl has the most beautifully feminine head. She has a good strong neck into well laid shoulders. She has good depth and width of chest, ribs well back and short loin. Correct topline and underline. Nicely presented. She moved soundly but was a little lethargic.

3RD 406 - Connomar Ramacca with Bardantop (Mr P Guest)

1ST 393 - Princess Pea (Miss R Bovio)

A quality spinone. She is robust, squarely built and has a lovely head and expression. Good angles fore and aft with good depth and width of chest. Ribs well back, short loin. Correct topline and underline. She is balanced, correct and has super skin & coat. She moved really accurately. Hopefully that third CC isn’t too far away.

2ND 401 – Valeska VD Turfhoeve am Cartrefyspin (Mr M & Mrs B Davies)

A real favourite of mine. I love her type. She has the most beautiful head and expression and is nicely put together all through and has excellent skin and coat. Lovely orange roan colouring. She is lacking weight at the moment and her waist was really visible which was such a shame as she moved really well. I just preferred the overall substance of my winner today.

A quality spinone who was thoroughly enjoying her day out! She has a lovely head with eyes of good colour and planes of correct divergence. Well made all through and sporting excellent skin and coat. Beautifully presented. Moved well, if a little enthusiastically.

 2ND 420 - Elgin Lost My Marbles (Miss V L & Miss C M Steere & Caul)

This girl epitomises “the good natured grouch” with her super spinone expression. There is lots to like about her. Her coat is of excellent texture. Her topline and tailset are correct. She was a touch lethargic on the move but sound enough. Nicely presented.

192. Italian Spinone - Champion Bitch

Entries: 1 Absentees: 0

1ST 391 - Sh Ch Annilann Temptress del Michiamo JW (Mrs J & Miss L Anderson & Mayne)

A pleasing bitch with a lovely head of correct proportions. She is balanced and shapely and is nicely presented with good skin and coat. Enough bone and substance. She moves nicely in profile but is close in front coming towards.

193. Italian Spinone - Veteran Bitch

Entries: 2 Absentees: 0

1ST 423 - Sh Ch Prottino del Vera by Dewdhala (Mrs D & Mr D Wagh)

A squarely made bitch of super breed type. She has a lovely head, strong neck into well laid shoulders, correct topline and underline, well angulated rear. Thick skin, harsh jacket and excellent bone and feet. Moved well.

2ND 427 - Sh Ch Connomar Zambana (Mrs V J Woodward)

10 ½ year old bitch in superb condition. Slightly longer cast than my winner, she has a lovely head. Correct topline & tailset though she did sag a little the longer she was stood. Good bone and feet. Coat of good texture. Moved well.
