Driffield Championship Dog Show

Breed: Retriever (Labrador)

Driffield officers and committee should be commended for their dedication to the dog show scene, delivering not one, but two shows efficiently whilst maintaining plenty of ring space and a good show atmosphere. Particular thanks for my wonderful stewards Helen and Liz, your hard work made the ring run smoothly. I was utterly delighted by my entry, as was quite evident in a few classes where I genuinely felt like a kid in a sweet shop! Thank you to all exhibitors for your entries and your patience with my instance in running each class together, it was a real privilege to judge for you.

Special Beginner Dog (5, 2A)

1st: Edwards’ Frewlings Gary Player At Bearstone. Typically Labrador in expression. Head of good proportions, giving a masculine appearance, without being overdone. In good coat for the day and time of year. Ample bone and muscle, whilst maintaining the moderate appearance as expected of a Labrador. A good otter tail. Moved well.

2nd: Moody’s Trendlewood Hometown Glory. Not in his best coat today. Clean outline. A good reach of neck and enough angulation in front. A good spring of rib and short coupled. Good turn of stifle and hocks well let down. Excellent muscling through out. Moved soundly.

3rd: Mell & Mell’s Treantagh Nketia

Veteran Dog (3, 1A)

I am always excited for the veteran classes. There is nothing more pleasing than seeing them own the ring and that is what this class did. Small in number, mighty in quality.

1st: Dodd’s Sh Ch Carriegame Moonshine. Standing foursqaure caught my eye immediately. At 7 years old would still hold his own in the higher classes. Beautifully balanced head with good use of ears giving a keen to please expression. A thick double coat. Good strength of neck and lay of shoulder. Held topline well. Good hind angulation. Moved seamlessly around the ring. The tail never stopped wagging.

2nd: Mullet’s Shaymiloney Schinus Afinmore. A smart masculine dog, strong and well muscled. Good depth of chest. Enough angulation in front. Not holding his hind quarters quite as strongly as the first. A typical coat and lovely otter tail.

Minor Puppy Dog (1)

1st: Harvey Major’s Linjor Beringer. A lovely six-month-old yellow puppy, very pleasing when standing. He has a willing to please expression. He has a good length of neck, well set shoulders and a good spring of rib. He is short-coupled and well angled in hind quarters. A promising youngster who is a little loose in front at the moment, but given his age, this is to be expected. Looking forward to seeing how he develops.

Puppy Dog (7)

1st: McGillivray’s Antonine Ready Eddie Go A.i. A lovely dog who moved with good, free-flowing action and held a pleasing outline at all times. He presents a typical Labrador head of good proportions, strong neck and has well-angulated forequarters. His overall conformation is balanced, and he is a good breed type. He is a very promising exhibit with much to admire. BPD and BPIB.

2nd: Thompson & Gordon-Smith’s Exelby Botis At Meadowline. Another lovely example of the breed, presenting a pleasing outline both stood and on the move. He possesses a good head and expression, and is well-constructed throughout. A close decision between him and the first-place winner, who had more reach in front movement.

3rd: Edward's Frewlings Fastrack At Bearstone

Junior Dog (4)

1st: Tulloch’s Sh Ch Binnaig Sea The Stars Over Tullochmohr JW. This dog was a clear winner today. He moved around the ring as though gliding on water, with a smooth, effortless action that was a joy to watch. He possesses a lovely, typical head with kind, intelligent eyes. His overall conformation is balanced with a well-set otter tail. He presented a complete and impressive picture, deserving of the top spot.

2nd: Harvey Major's State Park In Linjor. This is a well-made dog with a good tail set and classic otter tail. My first-place winner just had the edge in maturity and ring presence, but this dog moved soundly and presented a fine outline. He was not in his best coat today, but it does not detract from his fundamental good qualities. A promising exhibit for the future.

3rd: Beckley’s Swiftpeace Marksman At Godruo

Yearling Dog (1)

1st: Mitchell’s Darmilye Dare To Dream. Stood alone in his class, but still deserving of a good placing amongst the winners. A lovely keen to please expression, masculine, but moderate head. He has a clean neck, contributing to a good outline with level topline, a good tail set and otter tail. Good reach and drive on the move.

Novice Dog (12, 4)

1st: McGillivray’s Antonine Ready Eddie Go A.i.

2nd: Thompson & Gordon-Smith’s Exelby Botis At Meadowline.

3rd: Harvey Major’s Linjor Beringer.

Graduate Dog (4)

It was a pleasure to judge this class of lovely movers.

1st: Edward’s Kimbajak Royal Mint. This is a moderate male with kind eyes. He was well muscled and had a strong neck. More angulation in front would be preferred, despite this still moved effortlessly and with drive. His rear quarters are well-angled. He also has a nice otter tail and good tail set.

2nd: Burroughs’ Annakay Colour Sargent. A beautifully tempered dog, kind and energetic. Shown in a lovely condition. He has a typical head of good proportions. Good strength of neck. Could do with some more angulation in front. A strong level topline. Moved soundly around the ring.

3rd: Young's Potterspiney Optimist Vision

Post Graduate Dog (4, 2A)

1st: Bold’s Shaymiloney Saint Signed By Loubert. Unfortunately not in his best coat, but clearly displayed a double coat was there. A lovely Labrador head of good proportions and kind eye. Great bone and well muscled throughout. Good reach of neck leading to well laid shoulders. Would prefer more length in upper arm. A level topline held well on the move. Short coupled and well turned stifle.

2nd: Sadler’s Talifen Gentleman Jack. A more pronounced occiput giving a less typical head shape. He had a biddable expression. Clean neck and well placed shoulders, with good angulation in front mirrored in the hind quarters. A good double coat and typical otter tail. Went well on the move.

Limit Dog (6, 1A)

1st: Ennis-Holden’s Devonshires Yellowstone At Mariank (imp Usa). This dog took my eye straight away. A handsome yellow dog of good type. Masculine head, good stop and breadth of head, with a willing to please expression. Strong outline, clean and well angulated in front and back. Good substance, without being heavy. Moved with purpose. RDCC.

2nd: Hopkinson’s Rocheby Havana. Smart dog, unfortunately out of coat on the day. Typical Labrador head with kind expression. Strong neck and level topline leading on to a great otter tail. Well sprung ribs with good depth of chest. Enough angulation in front mirrored with correct turn of stifle and well let down hocks. Moved soundly.

3rd: Broadburn & Lawson & Satri Landebec Happy Hour With Tipibear

Open Dog (5, 1)

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to go over some dogs I have admired from the ring side and could have happily had them all in my final line up.

1st: Casey & Jayes’ Sh Ch Berlan Get Up And Go At Sandylands. A strong dog standing foursqaure of excellent type. A masculine head of good proportions and keen expression, using ears to full advantage. Strong clean neck leading on to well placed shoulders and good angulation in front. A barrel rib followed by short coupling. Well tuned stifle and let down hocks. Level topline, correct tail set and typical otter tail. Moves with drive. DCC, BOB and pleased to see him shortlisted in the group.

2nd: Tulloch’s Sh Ch Binnaig Bonnach For Tullochmohr Jw. Looked well both on the move and when standing. However, not as much drive as the first. He has a beautiful head of good proportions. Well made body, with good angulation in front echoed in hind quarters. He has a strong body with good depth and breadth of chest and correctly coupled.

3rd: Brackner’s Sh Ch Original Soundtrack Del Trango For Brupurhat

Special Beginner Bitch (9, 2A)

1st: Bishop’s Northernjoy Rambling Rose. A sweet chocolate bitch, small but in proportion. A gorgeous willing to please expression and used ears to fill advantage. Well laid shoulders with good angulation in front, mirrored in hind. Good barrel ribs. Held topline well and a good otter tail. Not in her best coat, but clearly a double coat present. Moved cleanly.

2nd: Gordon-Smith & Bibby's Meadowline Whizz Bang At Bruxinho. A smart black bitch, presented beautifully. An attractive feminine head with melting expression. Clean neck. Preferred the front angulation of the first. Good depth of chest and spring of rib. Enough angulation in hind quarters. Moved with purpose.

3rd: Elvidge’s Pevensie's Queen Lucy

Veteran Bitch (5, 3A)

A beautiful class of two! I am always delighted when I get veterans that love being in the ring and that they did!

1st: Gannaway-Jones’ Scarisbrick Skyfall Into Mossland. What a stunning 10 year old, still loving every minute of being in the show ring! Well balanced and holding her topline well. Lovely head, strong neck into well placed shoulders. Good angulation in hind quarters. Moved smoothly around the ring. BVIB

2nd: Collins’ Carromer Worth A Glance At Kaspair. Keen expression on a lovely feminine head. Strong neck leading to good angulation of the shoulder. Held her topline well. Stood and moved well for her age, but not holding her hind quarters as strongly as the first. Shown in beautiful condition, with a lovely thick double coat.

Minor Puppy Bitch (7, 1A)

A class filled with beautiful puppies, which is exciting for the future of the breed!

1st: McGillivray's Linjor Blue Moon At Antonine ( Naf ) Yellow bitch of great quality. Stood beautifully. A difficult choice between my first and second, but felt she gave a slightly more balanced outline at this stage, with her shorter coupling. Kind expression and typical Labrador head, feminine and not exaggerated in any way. A clean neck and well placed shoulders, her front is her fortune. Good angulation and good depth of chest. Well sprung ribs and level topline followed by good angulation in rear quarters. Moved with ease around the ring. BPB.

2nd: Deane's Tanronens Yuletide Angel. A beautiful black bitch, looking well developed for her age. A beautiful head and soft expression. A lovely outline when stood, could do with a little more length of leg to balance her coupling, which will hopefully come as she grows. Moved with drive. Lots of potential.

3rd: Brackner’s Brupurhat Star In Sight

Puppy Bitch (7)

1st: Weber’s Heddington's I Drink Wine. A beautiful bitch standing and on the move. If I were to be critical I would prefer a slightly lighter eye, but still gives a kind and intelligent expression. Beautiful when standing and pleased to confirm sound construction when going over. Well placed shoulders, some angulation in front. A pleasing spring of rib. Held topline well and good tailset with Otter tail. Moved beautifully.

2nd: Gordon-Smith's & Bibby's Meadowline Whizz Bang At Bruxinho.

3rd: Charlton’s Foxrush Hope So

Junior Bitch (10, 1A)

1st: Campbell’s Binnaig Sea Salt JW. What a beautiful mover! Shone as soon as she entered this class. A classic outline, bearing substance without excess. A lovely head with intelligent expression. Clean neck and good shoulder placement, good length of upper arm giving enough angulation in front followed by good length of lower leg. Good depth and breadth of chest with short coupling. Well angulated in hind quarters. A lovely otter tail. I was delighted to award her the Bitch CC and reserve best of breed.

2nd: Jones’ Serengoch's Calistoga JW. Really smart chocolate bitch. Lovely pigmentation which blended well with her coat colour. Just coming back into coat. Her coat will change, but her confirmation left little to be desired. Clean strong neck on well laid shoulders. Enough length in the upper arm. Good barrel ribs and short coupled. Good turn of stifle and let down hocks. Moved freely.

3rd: Wegner’s A Positive Mystery Unfinished Sympathy Harriet

Yearling Bitch (6, 1A)

1st: Clayton's Sh Ch Rochevale Sapphire. Beautiful in outline and never puts a foot out of place. Lovely when stood and on the move. A feminine head with a keen to please expression. Clean neck and well placed shoulders. Level topline, held well on the move. Good turn of stifle, well let down hocks and neat feet. Typical otter tail. A double coat present, but not in her best today, which is understandable for the time of year.

2nd: Elvidge's Pevensie's Queen Lucy. A strong broad head, without being overdone. Could have slightly lighter eyes to give a kinder expression, however her expression is still intelligent. Well constructed. A strong neck, with well placed shoulders and enough angulation in front. A level topline. Good angulation in hind quarters. Would prefer a little more length of leg to balance her depth of chest. Moved cleanly around the ring.

3rd: Wegner's A Positive Mystery Truly Madly Deeply Trudi
