Canadian Eskimo Dogs

I would like to thank the officers and committee of Driffield Championship Dog Show for inviting me to judge Canadian Eskimo Dogs and for their kind hospitality throughout the day. My thanks also go to the exhibitors for bringing their dogs under me and for accepting my decisions in a sporting manner.

The Canadian Eskimo Dog should present the majestic and powerful appearance of a true polar working spitz. It is a breed constructed for endurance, strength and the ability to pull heavy loads over long distances rather than for speed. Correct breed type, robust construction, a dense weather-resistant coat and powerful, functional movement were therefore of particular importance in my decisions.

1st – Hooley’s Akna Palmatum Impressive young male who immediately appealed for his masculine breed type, balance and powerful overall appearance. Large, well-proportioned wedge-shaped head with a strong muzzle, correctly shaped obliquely set eyes and short, thick, erect ears. Strong, muscular neck led into broad shoulders and a deep, well-developed chest. Well boned throughout, with large, strong feet and powerful hindquarters. Presented in excellent coat and moved with a brisk, purposeful stride, showing good drive and maintaining a firm outline. A quality youngster with considerable promise as he continues to mature. Best Dog.

1st – Needham’s Norstrela Pulsar Wind via Innugati Strong, substantial male presenting a pleasing combination of power, endurance and correct polar spitz type. Masculine head of good proportion, with correctly placed ears and an alert expression. Short, thick neck, broad chest and a firm, muscular back with a well-developed loin. Good bone and substance through the forequarters, complemented by muscular thighs and strong rear pasterns. Dense, weather-resistant coat completed a very typical picture. Moved steadily and powerfully, with useful drive from behind.

1st – Atkins and Cunningham’s Qimugta Hendricks Mature, masculine dog of very good breed type, possessing the strength, substance and powerful physique required of this demanding working breed. Large, broad, wedge-shaped head with a strong muzzle, correctly carried ears and an alert, intelligent expression. Thick, muscular neck flowed into well-laid shoulders, a deep, wide chest and a level, well-muscled back. Strongly boned legs, large feet and powerful hindquarters gave an impression of functional endurance. Moved at a brisk trot with purpose and drive, retaining his balance around the ring. Presented in good coat and condition. Reserve Best Dog.

1st – Hooley’s Snoqualmie Fairy Firefly Attractive young bitch with a feminine head and expression while retaining the necessary strength and substance for the breed. Well-proportioned wedge-shaped head with obliquely set eyes and neat, erect ears. Strong neck, well-developed forequarters and a pleasing depth of chest for her age. Firm topline, moderate ribbing and promising, well-muscled hindquarters. Good bone and large, well-shaped feet. Moved briskly and confidently, showing pleasing coordination and maintaining her overall balance. A promising young bitch with further development to come.

Post Graduate Bitch Entries: 1, Absentees: 0

1st – Needham and Atkins’ Qimugta Junipero Quality bitch of excellent polar spitz type, presenting a feminine yet powerful and workmanlike outline. Pleasing wedge-shaped head, correctly shaped and placed eyes and short, thick ears carried erect. Strong, muscular neck, broad shoulders and a deep, well-developed chest. Firm, level back with a strong loin and only a slight tuck-up. Well-boned legs, powerful thighs and strong feet. Dense coat of correct texture completed the picture. Moved with a brisk, purposeful action and good rear drive, showing the balance and endurance expected of the breed. Reserve Best Bitch.

Open Bitch Entries: 3, Absentees: 1

1st – Needham’s Asiaq Queen Fabiola Outstanding mature bitch who commanded attention through her breed type, balance and powerful, functional construction. Feminine without any loss of the substance and strength required in a Canadian Eskimo Dog. Excellent, well-proportioned wedge-shaped head with an alert expression, obliquely set eyes and short, thick, correctly carried ears. Strong, muscular neck led into broad, well-laid shoulders and a deep, wide chest. Level, well-muscled back, strong loin and powerful hindquarters with a good turn of stifle. Well-boned limbs and large, well-arched feet contributed to an overall impression of strength and endurance. Presented in excellent, dense, weather-resistant coat and hard condition. On the move she was powerful and brisk, with good coordination, effective rear drive and a stable outline. A very complete and convincing representative of this ancient working breed. Best Bitch and Best of Breed.

2nd – Atkins’ Ir Ch Lux Ch Qimugta Miss Marple Ir Jun Ch mature bitch with a pleasing combination of femininity, power and substance. Attractive wedge-shaped head with correctly carried ears and an alert, intelligent expression. Strong neck, broad chest and a well-developed, muscular body. Good bone, strong feet and powerful hindquarters. Presented in excellent coat, movement wasn’t the best today. Unfortunate to meet the eventual Best of Breed winner, who held the advantage in overall balance,movement and finish on the day.
