I would like to thank the officers and committee of Driffield Championship Dog Show for the invitation to judge Russian Black Terriers and for their kind hospitality. My thanks also go to the exhibitors for entering their dogs and accepting my decisions in a sporting manner.

The Russian Black Terrier should be a large, imposing and strongly constructed dog, almost square in outline, with substantial bone, developed muscle and a robust yet balanced appearance. Breed type must be accompanied by sound construction, a stable temperament and free, ground-covering movement.

1st – Newton’s Lintweed Black Lucian Promising young male of good breed type, presenting a strong, masculine and well-proportioned outline. Pleasing head with a moderately broad skull, dark eye and correctly placed ears. Powerful neck flowed smoothly into a firm topline, with good depth through the body and ample bone. Well developed for his age without appearing coarse, and moved positively with good forward reach and useful drive from the rear. A quality youngster with further maturity to come. Reserve Best Dog.

1st – Clarke’s Egon Z Galicyjskiej Ziemi (Imp Pol) Large, imposing male with a sturdy, robust frame and good overall substance. Masculine head, solid muzzle and well-developed furnishings giving the desired squared appearance. Strong, muscular neck, clearly defined withers and a firm, level back. Deep chest with well-sprung ribs and a powerful hindquarter. Presented in good coat and moved steadily, maintaining his shape and balance around the ring.

1st – Bull’s Evrussky Black Warrior at Gunnerbears (AI) Mature, masculine dog of excellent overall type, combining size, strength and substance with a balanced, almost square outline. Strong, well-proportioned head with dark, expressive eyes, a powerful muzzle and excellent beard and furnishings. Well-laid shoulders, straight and substantial forelegs and a deep, capacious chest. Firm, muscular topline, broad loin and strong, well-developed hindquarters. Moved with purpose, showing good reach in front and driving power behind while retaining a stable outline. Presented in excellent condition and handled to advantage. Best Dog.

1st – Williams’ Proud of Being Ava Gardner at Evrussky (Imp) A very feminine yet substantial veteran bitch who retained excellent breed type, balance and overall condition. Pleasing, well-proportioned head with dark eye, correctly placed ears and a strong muzzle enhanced by good furnishings. Powerful, clean neck, firm topline and good depth and width through the body. Strongly made throughout with well-developed quarters and ample bone. Moved freely and enthusiastically, showing good reach and drive and giving little indication of her age. A credit to her owner. Best Veteran and Reserve Best Bitch.

1st – Newton’s Lintweed Black Betty Boo Attractive young bitch with a feminine expression and a well-balanced, developing outline. Pleasing head proportions, dark eye and neat, high-set ears lying correctly against the cheeks. Good length and strength of neck, well-placed shoulders and straight forelegs with appropriate bone. Body developing well for age, with a firm topline and promising hindquarters. Moved confidently and steadily, showing good coordination. A promising youngster who should continue to improve with maturity.

1st – Bull’s Larkharbour Kawasaki at Gunnerbears Quality bitch of very good breed type, presenting a strong but feminine and well-proportioned outline. Balanced head with a solid muzzle, dark eye and good facial furnishings. Powerful neck flowed into well-laid shoulders and a firm, level back. Good depth of chest, well-sprung ribs and a short, strong loin. Substantial bone without coarseness, with muscular and well-angulated hindquarters. Moved soundly and efficiently, showing good reach and drive while maintaining her topline.

2nd – Mercer’s Larkharbour Moriwaki Another pleasing bitch with good substance, femininity and a sturdy, balanced construction. Attractive head with a pleasing expression, well-placed ears and good beard and eyebrows. Strong neck, deep body and well-developed ribcage, with a broad, muscular loin. Good bone and large, well-shaped feet. Moved steadily with useful drive from behind, although the winner presented the more balanced and finished picture on the day.

3rd – Newton’s Rus Zaznoba S Nadezhdinoi Poljany at Lintweed (Imp) Substantial, strongly constructed bitch with a pleasing, robust outline and good depth through the body. Feminine head of good proportion, with dark eye and ample furnishings. Powerful neck, firm back and muscular quarters. Presented in good coat and condition and moved positively around the ring. Not quite the overall balance and finish of the two placed above her today, but nevertheless a bitch with much to appreciate.

1st – Williams’ Evrussky Black Widow (AI) Outstanding mature bitch who immediately impressed with her breed type, balance and commanding presence. Large and substantial, yet unmistakably feminine, with an almost square outline, heavy bone and a powerful, muscular frame. Excellent head and expression, with a moderately broad skull, solid muzzle, dark oval eyes and well-placed ears. Strong, clean neck flowed smoothly into clearly defined withers, a firm level back and a broad, muscular loin. Deep, well-developed chest, well-sprung ribs and strong, correctly constructed quarters. Presented in excellent weatherproof coat with the required furnishings and trimming. On the move she was balanced and ground-covering, with good reach, powerful drive and a steady topline. A very complete bitch who fully merited Best Bitch and Best of Breed.

2nd – Williams’ Proud of Being Catwomen at Evrussky (Imp) High-quality bitch of excellent breed type, with a strong, feminine and well-balanced outline. Pleasing head with a dark eye, strong muzzle and well-developed furnishings. Good neck and shoulders, ample bone, straight forelegs and a deep, well-ribbed body. Firm topline, strong loin and powerful hindquarters. Moved soundly with good coordination and drive. Unfortunate to meet the eventual Best of Breed winner, who held the advantage in overall balance, maturity and finish on the day.
