I would like to thank the Committee of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Scotland for the very kind invitation to judge their prestigious Championship Show, at the lovely Springwood Park Showground in Kelso. It was an absolute honour to be asked to judge for one of the four Clubs that we have here in the United Kingdom. I will treasure the memories of the day.

I would like to thank Louise Clark-Maclean who was my steward and kept everything in check. I must apologise to the early classes whom I made go round twice until I saw the error of my ways as the ring was enormous! Having said that you could truly see the dogs move, which as a Judge is what I was looking for. I was pleased with my placings and overall the quality of dogs that came under me, shows that we have some very good stock in the UK.

All dogs presented were of sound temperament and good condition. There were no incorrect bites and all ridges were acceptable.

In judging, I was looking for dogs that meet what our Breed Standard calls for, especially in construction and movement; which is paramount in our breed. In addition to this, they need good heavy bone and substance as they are bred to do a full days work as an endurance hound. I feel those dogs I placed truly met the Standard.

BABY PUPPY DOG/BITCH 2/2

1/ Hodge’s COLKERRIN TO THE NINES

4 Month old bitch puppy, up to size, well boned with good substance, confident and assured when lightly gone over, danced around the ring with free movement, certainly enjoyed her outing in a very big ring, I enjoyed seeing the fun she had with her handler.

2/ Hodge’s COLKERRIN STITCH IN TIME

Litter sister of 1, up to size, also well boned with substance, confident with her surroundings, moved out well with the free bouncy movement that a puppy of this age has. Pleasure to go over and watch.

1/ Hurn’s KWANZA EL FAIYUM AT MATIKIRIDGE (IMP NLD)

10 month old, red wheaten of good substance and bone, clean masculine head, good width across the skull with correct ear carriage, nice round eye, good depth of muzzle with clean lip. Lovely reach of neck onto correct shoulder angulation, ample infill of chest with well boned forelegs onto nice tight feet. Good depth of chest, ribbed back well, good length of loin, lovely lean muscled hindquarters, with the right amount of angulation. Low set hocks that gave him drive to move round well, free and easy gait on side profile, lovely forehand with good reach, straight coming and going. Won his class and BP on movement.

2/ Pearce’s KINYEMI SONG OF SERENGETI SEPIWI SEKAYA FOR MSINGI (IMP DNK)

11 month old, red wheaten, good substance and bone, clean masculine head, good width across the skull with correct ear carriage, lovely length of neck onto nicely angulated shoulder, good infill of chest, well boned front, lovely tight feet. Good depth of chest and nicely ribbed back, good length of loin, well angulated lean muscled hindquarters, low set hocks, not quite the reach of 1 on side profile movement, straight coming and going, I am sure these 2 will change placings going forward.

1/ Maidment’s AMAHLE WOLFRIC THE WANDERER

12 month old red wheaten, up to size with plenty of substance and bone, soft masculine head of correct type, lovely round eye, clean thru the cheek with lovely depth of lip, lovely clean neck onto correctly angulated shoulder, well boned front with good infill, lovely tight feet, good depth of chest and nicely ribbed back with good length of loin, well angulated hindquarters with lean muscling , well set low hocks that enabled him to power enthusiastically round the ring with a lovely side profile action, straight coming and going, another one to watch.

2/ Catharell’s KINABULA’S MAKING MAGICK FOR FAAHAC

11 month old red wheaten , soft masculine head with good width of skull, round eye with clean cheek and good depth of lip, lovely length of clean neck onto good lay of shoulder, adequate forechest, straight forelegs onto tight feet, good depth of ribcage and length of loin, well angulated hindquarters with lean muscling, low set hocks, moved out well in side profile with level topline, straight coming and going.

1/ Smith’s LETELLA LOCKSMITH

23 month old liver nose, exceptional substance and quality heavy bone, stunning masculine head but not overdone, correct amber eye, clean through the cheek with correct lip, strong well arched neck onto well angulated shoulder, super infill of chest, well boned front onto tight feet, correct depth of ribcage to elbow, ideal length of loin, nicely angulated and lean muscled hindquarters with low set hocks, moved out well with level topline on side profile, straight coming and going. A liver boy to watch.

2/ Hick’s NUTHOUSE MASTERMIND

23 month old liver nose, nice masculine head , clean through the skull, good depth of muzzle with clean lip, clean well arched neck onto correct shoulder placement, good infill of chest, well boned forelegs to tight feet, good depth of ribcage , ideal length of loin, level topline, correctly angulated lean muscled hindquarters with low set hocks, moved out well in side profile and straight coming and going.

1/ Darnell’s RUBILTRA GUNNA B VICTORIOUS

2 year old, red wheaten, clean masculine head, good width across the skull, correct ear carriage, round eye, clean through the cheek with clean lip, clean neck of good length onto correct lay of shoulder, good infill of chest, well boned front onto good tight feet, ribbing to elbows, good length of loin and nicely angulated rear hindquarters with lean muscling, onto low set hocks, moved out well in side profile with level topline, straight coming and going, his movement won the class.

2/ Mulholland, Cunnigham & Cunningham’s WALAMADENGIE HEART THROB

23 month old, red wheaten, masculine head without any coarseness, good width of skull, ideal depth of lip, good reach of neck with correct shoulder placement, good infill of chest onto well boned front and tight feet, ribcage to elbows, good length of loin, nicely angulated rear hindquarters with low set hocks, moved out well and straight coming and going, a close call with 1 just better on the day.

5 year old, mid wheaten who catches the eye, plenty of substance and heavy bone, lovely hound head of correct proportions, soft round eye, correct amount of stop, clean through the cheek, correct depth of muzzle with tight lip, well arched neck onto good lay of shoulder placement, lovely infill of chest, well boned forelegs onto tight feet with toes nicely knuckled, ideal depth of ribcage with ribbing well laid back allowing enough heart and lung room, correct length of strong loin, nicely angulated hindquarters with lean muscled 1st and 2nd thigh, low set hocks giving great drive when moving, good forehand reach when viewed in side profile, level topline kept at all times, straight coming and going. 2 year old, red wheaten, masculine dog without any coarseness, plenty of quality heavy bone and substance, good head type with good width across the skull, correct ear carriage, round eye, good depth of muzzle with clean lip, lovely reach of neck onto well placed and balanced shoulder, good infill of chest, well boned forelegs onto well knuckled tight feet, elbows close to ribcage which has good depth and is nicely ribbed back allowing plenty of heart and lung room, good length of strong loin, level topline, clean well angulated hindquarters with lean muscling to 1st and 2nd thigh, lovely low set hocks that give him such drive that his movement was quite exceptional on the day, he was straight coming and going and in side profile a pleasure to watch him move out on the day. 16 Month old, light wheaten, feminine head, good ear carriage, round eye, good depth of muzzle, lovely reach of neck, correct shoulder placement, good infill of chest, well boned forelegs onto tight feet, good depth of ribcage and ribbed well back , good length of loin, clean nicely angulated hindquarters with low set hocks, moved out well coming and going and in side profile, a very close call on the day between these two.

23 month old, red wheaten, feminine head, correct ear carriage, round eye, clean lip, good length of neck onto good shoulder placement, ample infill of chest, nicely bone front to tight feet with well arched toes. Correct depth of ribcage to elbows and ribbed back well to good length of strong loin, clean muscled hindquarters with low set hocks, not quite together on the move today as 1, but reached out well on side profile.
