NATIONAL WORKING AND PASTORAL BREEDS

BORDER COLLIES

JUDGE: ADAM AKESTER (THWAITLAKE)

I Would like to thank the committee of National Working and Pastoral Breeds for inviting me to give CCs for the first time at your show. It is always one of my favourite shows as an exhibitor.

I felt very honoured to award my first set of CCs, and I was overwhelmed with the amazing entry I received. I thank every exhibitor for entering under me.

It’s a huge journey, setting out judging to get to award CCs in your breed and there are so many people who have encouraged and supported me on this journey, and I would like to thank them. Having Judith Gregory, who has mentored, supported and encouraged me over the years, sat ring side watching made it even more special.

It is an appointment that will live with me for years to come.

I would like to thank my wonderful stewards, Margaret Garland and Celia Vines, who kept my ring always flowing and certainly looked after me very well.

I was looking for a border collie who was balanced with correct angulation allowing the correct stealthy gait. Movement was very highly prioritized in my decisions on the day. I did find fronts, certainly the return of upper arm, an area of concern and this was evident on the move.

On whole, presentation was excellent but sadly body condition wasn’t as good. I found several exhibits to be overweight and lacking muscle, which on a herding breed is not good. This was also evident on the move as they couldn’t hold their scopey shape and lacking the stealthy gait desired in the breed.

I also had many wonderful examples exhibit under me and in some classes I was splitting hairs. I was pleased with my winners, and my limit and open bitch classes were a joy to judge. I felt overall, the quality was deeper in bitches, but I did find some quality males. It was also lovely to see numbers in the puppy bitch classes increasing.

1st: 310 OLIVER, Dr A J Smart As A Whip Danger Zone At Tambuzi (imp Esp)

This young lad came into the ring like a pro, so much ring presence. He certainly loves his time in the ring. He has a handsome head of good proportions and an excellent expression and well used ears and a good eye shape. He has a good height to length ratio, good bone and a correct croup and tail set and length. On the move, he moved out with purpose. Best Puppy Dog.

2nd: 276 LAMPIER, Mr & Mrs K & A Caleykiz Starshine

This young man wasn’t quite as enthusiastic to be in the ring today, but he didn’t put a foot wrong. I preferred the head proportions at this stage of the 1st. His front assembly was lovely and a good reach of neck. I felt he needs to fill in front as expected at this stage of development. I would have preferred to see him move out more as I would have thought he would of from his overall conformation.

1st: 249 PORTMAN, Mrs Susan & PORTMAN, Mr Carl Laceway Black Sabbath

A masculine male whose head is on the stronger side but not coarse. On the stack he produces a nice overall outline standing on parallel front of good bone. He was in beautiful condition, coat and muscle. He was very sound on the out and back and was steady but accurate on the side gait. Handled and presented superbly.

2nd: 234 AUSTIN, Ms S & ZOLAKOVA, Miss K Hysteps Come By Jw

An extremely well-trained young male who knows his job. His head is not the type I prefer but he has an excellent eye. Good neck leading into a good shoulder, strong topline and strong, well-muscled hindquarters. His condition, both coat and body, was excellent. He was sound out and back but would of preferred less lift of feet in his hind movement.

I really did appreciate this very typey male who was moderate throughout. He sadly decided to leave his clothes at home today but that didn’t take anything away from him. He has an excellent balanced head with a lovely eye and alert well used ears. He is very balanced with his good front and rear angulation, and his movement was true and steady in all directions

2nd: 315 RETTIE, Miss Katrina Glenfound Future Hope

A very confident young dog, he is of a different type to 1. There is a lot to appreciate on him. He is masculine without coarseness. He is nicely proportioned throughout. He was very well presented and handled to advantage. Just preferred the more fluid movement of 1.

A very strong male who was beautifully presented. He has a lovely flow to his outline and excellent rear angulation. He is very reliable on the move, going round the ring fluently. Very attentive to handler and in super condition.

2nd: 314 PRANDLE, Miss Joanne Roydenbark Meet Joe Black At Baywern

This boy certainly knows how to challenge his handler, but when he decides he wants to behave he can perform. A moderate male who is very clean in outline and has lovely moderate bone. He needs to drop into himself to produce the reach and drive required on the move. Hopefully in time he will. He was presented in fantastic coat which shone with health.

He was sound in all directions, and his strongly constructed rear allowed him to cover the ground and hold his topline well. He was presented in good hard condition and handled to perfection. A really close decision with my placings in this class for many reasons. Some which stood better in outline didn’t quite give as much on the move today. On another day, in different weather conditions results could have been different but I had to judge them on the day.

1st: 268 JOHNSON, Mrs C & Mr M Tidespring Storm Breaker

Masculine male who is very male in head. His head is of Good proportions with Lovely placed eyes of correct shape. Correct Bite and his ears were mobile when encouraged to use. His neck is of ok length and has an abundance of coat which doesn’t enhance it to the eye. His shoulder is good with a nice length of upper arm, allowing his legs to stand well under him. His length comes from his rib. His hindquarters are strong and matching his front angulation. His croup is ok and carries his tail well. What catches my attention with this male was his soundness out and back and his reach and drive on the side gait, lowering his head and powering round the ring. He looked slightly heavy over his forequarters, which in the challenge was one of my deciding factors but still a male of excellent type and quality. RCC.

2nd: 318 SCHEVENELS/DE CREE, Mr.,Mrs Isabel/Paul Eyes Of The World The Ecstasy Of Gold

On first look round this quality class of mature males I thought he could be my winner. He is of good type, masculine head and very well used up and tipped ears. Excellent neck into a good shoulder. I liked his balance and flow on the stack and his strong rear angulation and when he moves, he is very accurate but couldn’t match 1 for side gait.

I have thought long and hard on how to put my view of this male into words.

Just shy of his 12th birthday and in my view, he represents the breed in such a positive light. His attitude and showmanship has to be admired. He is a masculine male without an inch of coarseness. He doesn’t always show himself off on the stack but when you get your hands on him, they just flow over him. He has an excellent shoulder and upper arm with his forelegs standing well under his withers. Correct length of rib leading into a correct, strong loin. His level top line flows into a correct croup and tail set and length. I feel his breed type must be admired. He is good out and back but what stole it for me was his side gait. Lowering his head, excellent reach, holding his scope and with lovely drive from the rear. He is a super example. All compliments of this male must be given to all concerned. Congratulations. It was an honour to sign my first green card to this excellent male. DOG CC & Best Veteran. I was delighted to see him awarded Veteran group 4 in a quality group.

2nd: 316 RETTIE, Miss Katrina & MORLEY, Mrs Sue Sh Ch Chikaramor Cast A Spell Of Glenfound

Another veteran male who for me excels so much for breed type. So much to love about him especially his moderate type and elegance. He has a lovely head with an excellent bite, super eye and excellent expression. Lovely length of neck onto good shoulder angulation. Good bone, pasterns and correct feet. Excellent height to length ratio, lovely well moulded croup and correct set to tail of excellent length. On the move, he was good out and back and had a steady gait. Would have liked to see more drive from the rear.

Correct scissor bite, Well used up and tipped ears and correctly placed and shaped eye. Her front is good of structure. She really excels for her rear angulation, correct slope of croup, excellent tail set and length. Her overall shape caught my attention on first look round the class. I really loved this bitch when she came into the ring. She captured my eye. Such an elegant bitch who has a wonderful partnership with her handler. On the stack she free stands, perfectly four square, attentive to her handler using her excellent ears to full advantage which are set on a lovely feminine head. Hands on everything just flows. Super ratio, Her length of rib to loin is spot on and she is so balanced with her angulation front and rear. She is very sound coming and going and when she gets into her stride she covers the ground with such ease. A Really quality bitch who I feel could have an exciting show career. Presented in beautiful, hard condition. RBCC.

Another young lady of great quality. Larger frame girl than 1 but still very feminine. Another one who shows herself off on the stand. Lovely head, well used ears, excellent neck into good shoulders. She is balanced throughout. Good topline and correct croup. She stands a lovely outline. On the move, she challenges her handler but when she settles, she covers the ground well. 1st: 232 ANGIER, Mrs K & ANGIER, Mr D & STACEY, Miss S Bilyara Isn't She Lovely (ai)

A girl I judged as a puppy and lovely to see she has matured on the lines I thought she would. There is so much to like about this young lady. She is shown in superb condition. Moderate angles front and rear. I really appreciated the soundness of her. Where she really appeals is on the side gait, she lowers her head and has a lovely stealthy gait with balanced reach and drive. She was handled to sheer perfection by her talented handler.

2nd: 269 JOHNSON, Mrs C & Mr M Tidespring Take Your Time

Lovely type of girl, another girl I really liked. Stronger type of head, but still feminine. She has a lovely neck that leads into correct shoulders and upper arm and matched her rear angulation. A beautiful class that I really enjoyed judging.

1st: 282 LEE, Mrs S & RATCLIFFE, Miss Joanne Arrodare No Wonder

I really loved this beautiful girl. She excels for type, style and proportions. She has an excellent shoulder and upper arm allowing her fore legs to stand well under her correctly placed withers. Her correct flowing topline leads into a well moulded croup and a tail of good length. She caught my eye on my first look round the class and on examination found her so correct. On the move, she was ok going away and true coming towards. On the side gait, she lowered her head and displayed correct reach and drive with minimal lift of feet. Sadly, in the challenge she didn’t put in the same performance on the move which was a shame as it cost her further consideration in the challenge but still a top-quality bitch.

2nd: 304 MORLEY, Mrs Sue A & ROGERSON, Mrs Ann Chikaramor Hall Of Fame

A girl who pushed all the way today and put on a superb performance. Lovely feminine bitch who has an excellent neck and front assembly. Really liked this honest bitch who is set on a lighter frame.

This top quality black and white bitch put in a superb performance today. She stands such a balanced profile. Excellent neck leading into a very correct front assembly. Standing parallel in front. She had good ribbing and correct loin always holding her topline. Her front angulation matches her rear perfectly. Her head is on the stronger side but still has femininity. Where I fell in love with her was on the move. The more you ask of her, the more she gives. She is so sound out and back and on the side gait she used every bit of her to produce an effortless side gait. Lowering herself from the front and correct powerful drive from behind, carrying her tail correctly. Today she totally sold it to me. She was presented and handled to perfection.
