DEVON COUNTY SHOW 17/05/24 - Part Gundogs & Group

I would like to thank the officers and committee for inviting me to judge the gundog group. It was a very hot & long day and unfortunately, the ring which I judged the group in was held up by other variety classes that kept me waiting for over two hours, when other empty rings were available. The adult dogs became hot and tired due to waiting so long in the heat; this in turn reflected on their performance in the group. I can only apologise to them and those exhibitors of puppies who decided not to stay to compete in their respective group, it was totally out of my control. I found the quality of dogs in the Southwest outstanding. Some of the handlers could do with more ringcraft as a lot failed to follow simple instructions, this meant they didn’t get the best out of their dogs.

Retriever (Curly-Coated)

P (1,0) 1st Edworthys’ Brightmeadow Man Of Steel BP, A very promising 7-month young male, with a lovely head and kind expression, has the best of fronts and superb shoulders, he needs to tighten up on movement but that will come, moved well when settled.

PG (2,0) 1st Courtiers’ Maycourt Cover Shot, BOB, one I have admired from ringside and unfortunately left her best dress at home, 16 month old liver and oozes quality, she has the most feminine of heads and the most elegant of outlines, has the best of fronts leading into good shoulders, strong topline with correct tail set, moved well with excellent front extension and drive covering the ground well, superbly handled and shortlisted in a full group, one I will watch with interest. 2nd Perkins’ Maycourt Miss Sweetness At Tengore, another promising girl from this kennel and litter sister to the winner, carries the same qualities, equally as beautiful in head and expression, today she didn’t have the front movement of the winner.

OD (1,0) 1st Edworthys’ Maycourt Heartbreaker, 3-year-old black with a superb outline, in good coat and condition, pleasing head and expression but lacking in front and shoulders, plenty of bone with good bend of stifle, moved ok.

OB (2,1abs) 1st Courtiers’ Maycourt Take Me To The Top, RBOB, litter sister to PG winner, another who was out of coat, however; oozes in quality like her sister, super feminine head and kind expression, good front and shoulders with neat feet, moved with reach and drive, just preferred outline of the bob winner, a credit to the breeder.

English Setter

PG (1,0) 1st Osmans’ Bournehouse Sirocco Over Marissolo JW BOB & G2, I have admired this young chap since I saw him from the ringside, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on him and boy did he not disappoint, only 15 months old and in super condition, he has the most exquisite head with the kindest expression with a glint of naughtiness in his eye, good reach of neck into well laid shoulders, good depth of chest with good rib cage, excellent bone and tight feet, level topline with well-turned stifles, strong quarters, excellent movement where he just steals your attention, one I will follow with interest as he is so deserving when he fully matures to gain his title.
