Southampton & District Canine Association

Breed: Various Gundogs and Group

I had the pleasure of judging a number of breeds and the Gundog groups at this well-run show held at the most fabulous location in beautiful weather. I really enjoyed my day. Thank you to the Committee for the invitation, to my stewards and to all the exhibitors that entered. 

Gundog Adult Group

It was a real honour to judge this group as the overall quality was extremely high. One of the best I have judged. 

1st: Harper; Pitswarren Jiko, B. Hungarian Vizsla. A beautiful girl, full of excellent quality. Before she even stood, I was attracted to her beautiful outline and presence as she entered the ring. On hands on, she fulfilled all expectations from head to tail. Lovely headpiece and expression. Excellent construction throughout. In first class muscular condition. On the move, she covered the ground well, holding her topline and head carriage. Loved her! 

2nd:Norie-Miller; Ryallcourt Silent Witness for Tanrini, B. Cocker Spaniel. A very pretty bitch who impressed me earlier in the breed classes. Highly deserving of this place in a quality group. 

3rd: Loakes: Goldbirch Hearts Desire JW, B. English Setter. Another I had the pleasure of judging in the breed. 

4th: Sandiford; Hernwood Rocket Man, D. Gordon Setter. A 9-month puppy who I could not deny this placing to in this adult group. A litte superstar! Such an eye-catching boy, he walked in and commanded attention. Handled to get the very best out of him on the stack and move. A beautiful clean outline. Loved his headpiece. Well put together throughout, excellent front and rear assembly. Presented in excellent condition. Will watch with great interest as he a superstar in my opinion. 

Gundog Puppy Group

Such an exciting group of youngsters, love judging puppies, and this was no exception. 

1st: Sandiford; Hernwood Rocket Man, D. Gordon Setter. 4th i the Adult group and absoluelty delighted to see him go on to win Best Puppy in Show. 

2nd: Jackson-Haines; Leighsham The Cheeky Elf, D. Golden Retriever Beautifully balanced puppy, presenting a clean outline. Outstanding headpiece, with correct pigment, eye colour and the most gorgeous expression. Correct strength and length of neck into super front assembly into short, deep body. Level topline held well on the move which was purposeful, with excellent reach and drive. 

3rd: Evans; Trendlewood Long Time Comin, D. Labrador Retriever Appealing yellow 9 month male, who I had awarded BP to in the Breed. 

4th: Gregory; Sevensden Autumnal Gold, B. Hungarian Vzisla. 9 months and full of promise. Super feminine and balanced. Pretty lean head. Well placed shoulders, and correct body proportions. Good spring of rib at this age. Very graceful on the move and cover the ground well. 

Bracco Italiano 

Post Graduate: (1) 1st: Braccorions You Can Conquer, D Liked this male for type overall. Masculine and powerful throughout. Very appealing head with correct chiselling and nose, and expression. Chest broad and deep. Would have preferred tighter feet. Correct spring of ribs and slope of topline. Good angulation to hindquarters in good muscular condition, used well on the move. Best of Breed. 

English Setter 

Open (1) 1st: Loakes: Goldbirch Hearts Desire JW, B. English Setter. A super feminine, stylish tri balanced girl, who presents an attractive clean outline. Beautifully presented. Like her a head a lot, for its proportions, eye and expression. Lovely to go over, excellent shoulder placement, straight front, good spring of rib. Correct well bent stifles, in good muscular condition, moved freely, holding her head, topline and tail. A beautiful lady. 

Pointer 

Puppy (2) 1st: Perren, Evaluna For Your Eyes Only, B 6 month old pretty girl, who presented a pleasing balanced shapely outline on the stack. Super temperament, full of confidence. Love to see this in a puppy. Pleasing head. Well placed shoulders. Straight front, good spring of rib at this age. Correct well-turned stifles. Lovely on the move, holding herself together and covering the ground with ease. Best Puppy. 

 2nd: Dighton, Evaluna Keep Your Eyes on Me, B. Litter sister to 1st and delightful to see these two together having fun. Super confident. Pleasing head with a kind expression and correct bite. Good straight front, adequate width of chest and correct spring of rib. Good feet. Moved OK, lost her topline on the stack and move. 

Post Graduate (3, 2 abs) 1st: Cardiff, Freebreeze Pixar At Prosperity, B I liked this bitch on the stack for her balance and outline but for me she really came into her own on the move. She held such a lovely shape, moved with ease, holding her topline, head and tail. She was lovely to go over. Feminine head, good eye and expression. Well put together throughout, in great muscular condition throughout. Best of Breed 

Open (4, 3bs) 1st: Perren; Evaluna Chasing Rainbows with Hookwood JW, B Attractive feminine lady. Presents an appealing outline of balance and curves. Liked her head just didn’t have the work as my best of breed. Correct length, strength and arch of neck, good placement and length of shoulder. Good bend of stifle. Moved well but preferred the footfall and ease of my BOB. Res BOB. 

German Shorthaired Pointer 

 Puppy (2) 1st: Bunker; Mistcapel Blowin The Breeze, D Full of life and personality, love this in a puppy. Masculine, powerful boy throughout. Gave his handler a bit of a hard time but liked him for his overall breed type. Super balanced head, with correct proportions and work. Correct front assembly, into correct depth and spring of rib. Well-muscled thigh, used well on the move when he settled. Best Puppy. 

2nd: Brundell-Pryke & Gallagher, Venatur Indicus, B A lovely puppy with lots to like. Correct size and balance overall. Pretty head, lovely eye shape and expression. A little loose on the move but only a baby. Nice body shape and proportions, strong topline on the stand. Liked her hindquarters for bend of stifle and width to thigh. Junior: (2,1 abs) 1st: Bunker; Mistcapel Blowin The Breeze, D 

Post Graduate: (3,2 abs) 1st: Caddy; Topfield Magic Sunrise, B Lovely show girl with a look me attitude, made me smile, did a brilliant free stand, showing a pleasing balanced outline. Very feminine but with adequate substance. Pretty head piece, kind eye and expression. Gentle temperament. Adequate length of neck into straight front. Good spring of rib. Reserve Best of Breed. 

 Open: (2) 1st: Russel, Fraulynzway Lightning Bolt JW, D Super male, who appealed on the stand for his clean, balanced outline. The desired noble appearance! A tad heavy over the shoulder today but was a joy to go over. Super clean head, masculine but not overdone. Super forequarters strong and sloping shoulders into straight front. Excellent depth of chest and spring of rib. Well-muscled, and good strength and width of thigh. Correct feet. Moved with reach and desired drive, with ease. Best of Breed. 

 2nd: Cook & Lamb; Brooke Will Do It Through Milcook, D 8 year old male. Appealing masculine head and gentle expression. Kind temperament. Not the front assembly of 1st. Lost his topline on the stack. However good depth of chest and spring of rib. Good muscular hindquarters used well on the move. 

Labrador Retriever 

Puppy (5) Quite a mix of type within this class. 1st: Evans; Trendlewood Long Time Comin, D Yellow 9 month pup who stood out for me in this class. A strong dog throughout in great muscular condition. Super kind temperament. Lovely head piece, good stop, super expression, eye shape and colour and expression, great pigment. Strong neck into well placed shoulders and straight front. Good bone throughout. Good depth and width of chest, nice spring of rib. Level topline held on the stand and move. Round correct feet, good tail. Moved well covering the ground when settled. Best Puppy and Reserve Best of Breed. 

 2nd: Davey; Clanfield Guardsman D. 6 month yellow pup, first time out and put on a great performance, presented an attractive overall balanced, clean outline. Super bone throughout. Loved his head, super pigment, eye shape and expression. Lost his topline a bit on the stand but has time on his side as he matures. Excellent depth of chest and spring of rib. Great width of thigh. Moved with confidence. 

 3rd: Perkins; Keeninspires Countess, B Junior (3,1abs) 

1st: Perkins; McFarwin’s Grey Legacy By Keeninspires, D Yellow male, attractive clean outline on the stand. Great temperament, using his tail all the time. Appealing head, broad skull and defined stop. Nice eye shape, colour and the kindest expression. Excellent bone and straight front. Strong in body, good topline, with well sprung barrel ribs. Excellent width of thigh and strength, correct turn of stifle. Moved well out and back. 

 2nd: King; Linthwaite Mathilda (AI) JW,B Yellow feminine girl throughout but still with adequate strength. Pretty head with correct balance and proportions. Good depth of body and spring of rib. Dropped her topline on the stand which just spoilt the outline. Correct tail and set on, carried well on the move. 

 Post Graduate (6, 3abs) 1st: Wallace; Dreammake For Tiaja JW (Imp DNK), B Very pretty yellow, who appealed for her overall clean balanced outline. Very attractive head, with lovely eye, kind expression and defined stop. Lovely bone throughout, straight front. Lovely tight feet. Strong topline held on the stand and move. Good muscular condition. Very sound on the move. 

 2nd: Perkins; McFarwin’s Grey Legacy By Keeninspires, D Placed 1st in Junior. 

 Open: (6, 1 abs) 1st: Wallace, Tiaja Love In The Sun, B Really liked this yellow lady. Stood out for me in the class and the challenge. Beautiful head piece, with correct proportions and balance. Lovely eye and expression and ears. Clean, strong neck and of good length, flowing into excellent forequarters with well laid-back shoulders. Level topline. Excellent depth of chest and spring of rib. Loved her width and strength of thigh into super short, well angulated hocks. Very sound on the move. Best of Breed. 

 2nd: Perkins; McFarwin’s Grey Legacy By Keeninspires, D Placed 1st in Junior and 2nd in Post Graduate. 

3rd: Jenner; Lyjansen Simba’s Savanna, D 

Field Spaniel Puppy (1) 1st: Wade; Sylviidae Be My Wingman, D Lovely temperament on this puppy loving his time in the ring with his handler, love it. Pleasing outline would prefer a stronger topline. Liked his head for its proportions, raised brow giving the most delightful expression. Good length and set on of ears. Front could be tighter. Good depth of chest and desired moderate spring of rib. Moved well and I’m sure he was smiling the whole time he was in the ring. Best Puppy.

 Junior: (4) 1st: Adams, Lewis, Lewis & Hird; Irisbel A Million Dreams, B A brilliant job by her handler to get the very best out of her. Presented in top condition, well done. Super lovely clean balanced outline in the lineup. Prettiest of heads with correct defined occiput and long lean muzzle. Nice almond shape to eye. Correct length of neck into well laid-back shoulders. Good body proportions. Strong hindquarters used very well on the move. Reserve Best of Breed. 

 2nd: Shipton; Heartwood Mishules All Is Possible With Calico, B Black and Tan, longer cast and heavier in head than 1st. Correct length and set of ears. Good length of neck into well laid-back shoulders. Her chest is deep and ribs moderate as desired. Pleasing angulation to her hindquarters. 3rd: Wade; Sylviidae Be My Wingman, D 1st in Puppy. 

Post Graduate: (4,2bs) 1st: Adams, Lewis, Lewis & Hird; Irisbel A Million Dreams, B 1st in Junior 

2nd: Shipton; Heartwood Mishules All Is Possible With Calico, B 2nd in Junior 

 Open: (6, 2 abs) 1st: Adams, Hird, &Hird; Irisbel English Rose JW, B Very attractive outline of balance and shape on the stack. A very honest girl with an ultra-feminine head with the lovely almond shape eye, lean muzzle and low set long ears. Correct assembly front and rear. Strong level topline. Good muscular rear with well et down hocks into good tight feet. Moved out and back well but looked lovely in profile where she held her shape. Best of Breed. 

 2nd; Shipton; Broomeece Fire Cracker Over Mishules, D A masculine head on this dog which for me was a slightly over done however still lots to like. Good balance throughout, liked his body proportions. Moved well and comes from well-muscled hindquarters. 

 3rd: McDonald-Watts; Sh Ch Cochen Hocus Pocus of Hurndewin, D 

Cocker Spaniel 

 Puppy (3,1abs) 1st: Anderson; Sabaloo Star Dancer, B Pretty 11 month black girl, presented in super condition. Lovely compact shape and clean outline. The most lovely temperament as wanted in this breed, tail didn’t stop. Appealing head piece, correct eye shape and colour giving the most appealing of expressions. Pleasing front assembly, strong font, correct bone and lovely feet. Nicely muscled hindquarters which she used well when she got her act together, gave her handler a bit of a hard time but forgiving in a pup who was most certainly merry. Best Puppy. 

2nd: Griffin; Griffial All My Loving, B Pretty gold with an attractive feminine head, lovely shape, defined stop and correct eye colour with desirable expression. Presented in excellent coat and condition. Straight front and good feet. Moderate length of neck. Good spring of rib and depth of chest for a baby. Good bend of stifle.

Junior: (5, 3abs) 1st: Norie-Miller; Ryallcourt Silent Witness for Tanrini, B. I loved this blue roan bitch! Class. Took my eye as she came into the ring and fulfilled all expectations. Presented and handled in first class condition and handled to perfection. Super clean outline on the stack, showing an excellent compact shape. The most beautiful of heads with correct proportions and shape. Most appealing eye shape, colour and expression. Lovely to go over from head to tail. Excellent forequarters and hind assembly. Strong in body with correct well developed chest ad spring of rib. Correct level into sloping topline held on both the stack and move. Moved with real purpose, showing the reach and drive required, holding her head with lashing merry tail. A super girl who I will follow with interest. Best of Breed & Gundog Group 2. 

2nd: Brydon; Jamesfield Just The Ticket To Solovey, B A pleasing gold to go over. Handler would benefit from pulling her hindquarters out on the stack to show her shape. Feminine bitch with pleasing body proportions. Pleasing head and correct eye colour with the desired gentle expression. Presented in great condition, coat and muscle. Of good bone throughout. Moved well. 

Post Graduate: 1st: :Norie-Miller; Ryallcourt Silent Witness for Tanrini, B 1st in Junior. 

 2nd: Anderson; Zakova Baloo At Sabaloo, B A quality blue roan bitch. Slightly longer cast than 1 but appealing head shape, eye and expression. Well set ears of good length. Moderate length of neck into deep brisket and well-placed shoulders. Strong in body with good spring of rib. Love to see that merry tail used on the move. 3rd: Griffin; Griffial Make It Count, JW 

 Open: 1st: Anderson; Zakova Sundance Kid At Sabaloo, D A smart black male with a pleasing outline on the stack and held on the move. A masculine head, with a kind dark eye and expression. Well placed shoulders and straight front. Correct depth of chest to elbow. Good spring of rib. Slightly longer in body. Good bend of stifle. Reserve Best of Breed. 

 2nd: Rofe; Villaspaniel Sunny Delight, D Pleasing gold male who had the most super temperament and was most certainly merry, do love to see this. Appealing expression with dark eye. Low set ears. Good depth of chest and spring of rib. Moved OK. 

Flatcoated Retriever 

Puppy (2,1abs) 1st: Tagg, Oiyou Layla Gocek, B 8 month Liver pup, who was full of super personality and character. Of correct size, showing overall balance and raciness. Pleasing shape to her head, correct eye colour and a most appealing expression. Clean neck into a lovely front assembly, deep chest and defined brisket, straight front. IN excellent muscular condition in her hindquarters. Moved with confidence and ease, just carrying her tail a little too high at times. Best Puppy. 

 Junior (1) 1st: Bellamy; Bochilbarley My Girl, B A very feminine racy black throughout. Lovely kind and confident character. Pretty head and expression with correct bite. Straight front. Correct moderate bend of stifle to her hindquarters. Lovely to see her lashing tail on both the stack and move. 

Post Graduate (1) 1st: Woodhams, Kula Casanova, D Presents an appealing overall clean, balanced outline. Masculine but in no way overdone, having the required raciness. Really liked his head for its shape, mouldings and expression. Good depth of chest into straight front and correct spring of rib. Good topline held on the stack and move and lashing tail. Moved well covering the ground. Reserve Best of Breed 

Open (2) 1st: Bowens, Clandrift Bring me Sunshine JW, D A quality male with lots to like. Great temperament and outgoing personality. Super clean outline, balanced of good size and held his shape at all times. Super head, with the correct mouldings. Loved his eye and expression. Well-constructed throughout and in excellent condition. Moved true, soundly and at ease. Still only 2 so more to come from this boy as he matures. Best of Breed 

2nd: Bellamy, Moontorn Better Half of Me JW, B Feminine throughout and really well handled, great team here. She has a pleasing head, correct bite, well set ears. Clean neck of good length. Straight front and good feet. Firm topline, strong hindquarters with desired bend of stifle. Another with that super lashing happy tail. Moved soundly. 

Welsh Springer Spaniel 

Puppy (1) 1ST: Salt, Islanza Gladiator, D A really lovely 6 month puppy. Loving very minute of his time in the ring. Beautiful rich red and clean white colouring that shone in the sun. Super head piece, masculine but not overdone. The kindest of expression with a hint of mischievousness. Well-constructed throughout. Good depth of chest and spring of rib at this age. Moved well but would like to have seen him let go a bit more to see his true footfall. Best Puppy. 

Junior: (1) 1st: Primmer, Amanshe Enchanted Spirit, B A pretty feminine girl who was lacking a bit of confidence today which impacted her performance. However she presented a pleasing overall shape. A straight front. Good spring of rib. Held her topline on the move.

Post Graduate: (4, 1 abs) 1st: Stone, Kideoan Mark the Time for Merrem, JW What super temperament on this boy, happy and confident. Lovely rich red and clean white colouring. Clean balanced outline. Liked his head shape, and expression. Correct ear shape, size and set on. Clean neck into good front assembly with great depth of chest. Firm topline held on stack and move. Strong hindquarters which he used well on the move. Reserve Best of Breed.

2nd: Naunton, Trenzalore’s Princess Leia,B Super feminine, appealing and pretty head piece. Longer in frame than my winner. Lovely happy, kind temperament, sure she was smiling the whole time. Correct rich red colour. Good defined stop, well set ears. Good length and strength of neck into straight front. Correct spring of rib. Moved soundly. 

3rd: White, Mymmsbrook Malbec With Fireglow, JW, B 

Open: (7, 1abs) 1st: Woodhams, Glynell Jiffy, D Another that me smile for his super character, kind demeanour and at 8 1/2years old. Absolutely full it and I loved it. In excellent condition. A balanced, well boned dog. Masculine head but not overdone, kind expression. Pleasing front assembly which was strong and with correct depth of brisket and spring of rib. Good strength and width to his thigh, which he used so well on the move. Best of Breed. 

2nd: Naunton, Trenzalore’s Princess Leia,B 2nd in Post Graduate. 

3rd: Gough, Julita Rukester, D 

English Springer Spaniel 

Puppy: (1) 1st: Glass, Cobhay Rosa Meg, B Nice overall shape to this puppy. Lovely rich L/W colouring and straight coat. Appealing shape and proportion to her head, good ear set. Moderate length of neck. Straight and elbows tight in front, with good bone throughout. Good depth and strength of body. Liked her width of thigh and she was in great muscle condition. Best Puppy & Reserve Best of Breed 

Junior:(4,4abs) 

Post Graduate: (1,1abs) 

Open: (1) 1st: West, Grosbreuil Abricot Regal, B At 8 years old, this L/W girl is in super condition and a lovely friendly disposition about her. Balanced overall frame and outline. Pleasing head, good shape to eye and well-set ears. Strong throughout with excellent bone, without being overdone. Very sound and true on the move. Lovely small tight feet. Best of Breed. 

AVNSC Gundog: 

Puppy: (2,2abs) 

Junior: (2, 1abs) 1st: Harvey, Crumbledor Quirinus Quirel, D. Sussex Spaniel Full of fun and character. Just into Junior and still needs to mature in body but has time on his side. A masculine head with a very gentle expression. Great bone throughout and in good muscular condition to his hindquarters which he used on the move to drive from. Held his shape on the move. 

Post Graduate: (1) 1st: Harvey, Uccello De La Baronnie Curvale Malbecmogs (Imp Fra), D. Sussex Spaniel. A nice size to this male. A pleasing chiselled head, with the correct eye shape and expression. Strong neck moving into a strong, level back. Correct depth of chest. Hindquarters were firm and strong. 

Open: (4, 1abs) 1st: Allum, Sh Ch Macarica Fair and Square JW, B. Italian Spinone. I loved this girl! Full of quality overall and so appealing on the stack for her balanced square outline. She was a pleasure to go over and so well constructed throughout. I thought her head was most beautiful, for it proportions and eye shape giving the most appealing expression. Correct front and rear assembly. In great muscular condition with a good bend of stifle. Just disappointed not to see her in the Group as she was one of my favourites on the day. Best AVNSC 

2nd: Duckmanton, Sh Ch Cuboglach Sandy Wave, D. Irish Water Spaniel. Another super quality dog. Presents an attractive compact, balanced clean shape. A masculine head with desired eye shape and alert expression. A strong neck flowing into well placed shoulders. Straight in front, good shape and spring of rib. Firm level topline held on the stack and move. Good angulation and strength to rear. Sound and covered the ground freely on the move.

AV Gundog

Puppy: (11, 8 abs) 1st: Challis, Vizslanya Domenkos, D. Hungarian Vizsla. 8 month old promising pup, of good size. Appealing outline and shape. Really liked his head piece and proportions. Well set ears and shape. Good arch to his neck into well laid-back shoulder. Good depth of chest and spring of rib at this age. Moderate angulation to this hindquarters. Elegant on the move, a little loose in front but will tighten with age. 

2nd: Gammon, Glenbrows Reminiscent, B. Hungarian Vizsla. 9 month old feminine pup who is still quite raw and needs to come together. A very feminine, pretty head, with a gentle expression. She had a good clean arch to her neck into a straight front. Desired level back, correct tuck up. Moved soundly. 

3rd: Dighton, Evaluna Keep Your Eyes On Me, B. Pointer. 

Junior: (7,5 abs) 1st: Edwards, Copper’s Get Off My Cloud By Bonhomie (Imp Swe), D. Irish Setter. Presented in first class condition and handled to get the very best out him. A dog full of quality. Well-constructed throughout. His coat gleamed in the sunshine, so beautiful. Presents a lovely, balanced, racy outline. Appealing head shape and proportions. Correct raised brow, and eye shape giving a kind gentle expression. Correct length and arch to neck onto well laid-back shoulders. Straight in front, good feet. Correct spring of rib and depth to chest. In good muscular condition to his hindquarters which he used on the move, very sound with great reach and drive. 

2nd: Fosdike, Thornywait Royal Design At Meiepere, B. Golden Retriever. A feminine girl, an attractive clean outline. Presented in great condition and handled well. Pleasing head would just like a bit more chiselling. Dark eye and appealing expression. Good length and strength of neck into well laid-back shoulder. Straight front and tight elbows. Correct spring and depth of rib. Good width to thigh and in hard condition. Lovely tight feet. Moved soundly just a little close behind. 

 Post Graduate: (6,4 abs) 

1st: Withey, Rosinante Major Hero, D. Golden Retriever. A very attractive male. Super balanced clean outline. Most gorgeous masculine balanced head but not overdone. Dark eye, with a slight mischievous expression which made me smile. Correct length and strength of neck into good strong front construction. Lovely body proportions and depth. Good angulation to his hindquarters and second thigh. Firm in muscle. Moved very soundly and easily covering the ground. 

 2nd: Henson, Tonara Moon Walk, D. Golden Retriever. Liked this male on the stack for his balance and obvious strength. Lovely to go over as well-constructed throughout. On the move he just carried his tail little high for me which spoilt his outline and shape. Another super balanced head, good ear set and size. Correct forequarters with good bone. Lovely feet. Excellent depth and spring of rib. Firm topline. Well bent stifle and good width of thigh. Sound on the move.
