It was an absolute pleasure to accept the invitation from the Cocker Spaniel Club of Scotland to judge their open show on Sunday 11 August 2024. Thank you to the hard-working committee and my able stewards who kept the whole day flowing. The venue in Alva was not only fully equipped and functional but also set in a stunning location, offering breath taking views that truly enhanced the day's events. What a wonderful collection of dogs! They were a true credit to the breeders and exhibitors of Scotland, who were so gracious in giving me the opportunity to judge their entries and bringing their beautiful dogs to the show. Thank you everyone for a memorable and enjoyable opportunity.

Veteran Dog – Any Colour 3,0

1 Torbett KIRLINJIS MADE YOU LOOK JW SHCM Balanced, substantial dark blue in great condition of excellent breed type. Balanced head. Very good forehand assembly. Well-developed fore chest and good depth of brisket. Well boned. Straight columns. Short, straight, strong back. Well sprung ribs. Strong short loin. Strong, well rounded and formed hindquarters with short strong hocks. Excellent deportment. Presents a pleasing picture in stance and retains that outline in movement as he uses his powerful hind quarters to drive a balanced and ground covering gait. Convinced at each phase and was a worthy BEST VETERAN.

2 Smith PEARKIM POKEMON AT LUANSHYA JW Well put together orange roan in great condition. Clean head, good reach of neck. Well boned. Stands on straight legs. Very well angled upper arm of good length. Shoulder could be better laid. Back is level and short. Short strong loin. Good hind angles. Sound throughout. Balanced, power driven fluent side gait. Didn’t have the firmness in the topline as number 1 which was the deciding factor between these two very good males.

Minor Puppy Dog – Any Colour 3,0

1 Fairbairn CARMELFAIR CESARE Cracking blue puppy of excellent type. Very good bone, sturdy and merry with a confident, outgoing temperament. Correct proportions and very balanced. So well put together and presents a very pleasing outline in stance. Excellent lay of shoulder, good chest and brisket development in keeping with age. Firm, short back. Strong loin. Excellent turn of stifle. Strong broad thighs. Powerful, well rounded hindquarters. Even at this young age he knows how to use everything he has, transmitting power through a level topline to effortlessly and fluently cover the ground with balance and style retaining the same, correct outline in movement as he portrays in stance. Best of luck for the future.

2 Flowers VISTNIA LANG MAE YER LUM REEK Well put together black of very good type. Well boned, straight columns fore and aft. Good head and expression. Very good reach of neck. Good fore chest. Very good length and depth of brisket. Long well angled upper arm. Shoulder could be more laid back. Straight firm back. Very good hindquarters. Moves well with good drive and reach.

Puppy Dog – Any Colour 3,1

1 Scotland ROSECOURT TUXEDO I could have watched this puppy go around the ring all day. Presented in excellent coat and condition. Balanced, sturdy and well boned. Excellent type. Correct proportions. Very good head and expression. Strong neck of good length flows into well laid shoulders and correct return of upper arm. Good straight legs viewed in front. Would like the pasterns firmer. Straight short firm topline. Well sprung ribs, short strong loin. Excellent hindquarters with good bend in the stifle, wide, strong thighs. Short, strong powerful hocks. He puts it all together effectively with enthusiasm and confidence to produce a fluent, ground covering gait with excellent deportment. He performed throughout the day and was BEST PUPPY IN SHOW as well as RESERVE BEST DOG, almost pipping his kennel mate to Best Dog. Wishing him much success to follow.

2 Bilsland MERRIDEAN DOTTY BOY A sturdy and substantial chocolate roan shown in good coat and condition. Carrying a few excess pounds. Full of life and outgoing in temperament. Good proportions. Good bone. Shoulder could be better laid back. Good length of upper arm. Straight columns. Firm, level topline. Good hindquarters. Good bend of stifle, little short in lower thigh. Very exuberant in the moving stage of competition, good drive with true action and adequate forward reach, the excess weight meant the back wasn’t as firm as it could be in movement.

Junior Dog – Any Colour 6,0

1 Flowers TOTENKOPF DANCING FEET Dark blue in excellent coat and condition. Good bone and substance. Good head and expression. Very good reach of neck flows into shoulders that are set a little forward. Good return of upper arm. Very good legs and feet. Good fore chest. Strong, straight back in stance. Would like better bend of stifle and a little more in the second thigh. Sound throughout. Moves with a balanced side gait but tends to raise over the loin and the backline loses the levelness seen in stance.

2 Scotland LYNWATER MR MISTOFFELEES Substantial and strong orange roan. Good head & expressive. Good reach of neck. Upper arm is long but little steep. Shoulder blades should be better laid. Firm topline but nick behind the wither detracts. Well boned legs but stands with feet at five-to-one. Good spring of rib. Strong loin. Good hindquarters with broad thigh and well let down, strong hocks. Very good drive and reach but a little erratic today.

1 Flowers CORRALET DANCING WITH WOLF’S Sturdy, well-proportioned gold. Good head and expression. Balanced and well proportioned. Good length of neck flows into well laid shoulders. Straight, firm back. Short strong loin. Good depth & length of brisket. Good spring of ribs. Very good hind angles compliment the forehand. Sound throughout. Once settled he drives from strong hindquarters with fluency and good forward reach would like the back to retain firmness.

Graduate Dog – Any Other Colour 6,2

Splitting hairs between these two dogs.

1 Torbett KIRLINJIS FAST’N’FURIOUS JW Excellent type. Correct proportions, square and cobby. Well boned. Appealing head with good planes. Good expression. Good reach of neck into good forehand assembly. Good chest development. Good brisket. Short, straight and firm back. Good spring of rib. Strong short loin. Good hindquarters, good turn of stifle. Would like a little more length in the lower thigh. Broad, strong thighs. Sound throughout. Full of enthusiasm he drives with power and fluency to cover the ground effectively with good deportment and maintains a pleasing outline.

2 MacLean LYNWATER BLACK AND BLUE Another well put together, well-presented dark blue of excellent type and well proportioned. Good bone and substance. Good head and expression. Good reach of neck and very good forehand angles. Has the edge over number 1 in the fore angles. Good depth and length of brisket. Short back. Strong loin. Strong broad thighs. Drives with power and purpose to produce a ground covering effective side gait. Nip and tuck between these two very well put together males. Number 1 judged edged on the firmness in back on the move.

Post Graduate Dog – Any Colour 3,1

1 Scotland LYNWATER HAMILTON Quality orange. Strong, compact, balanced and well proportioned. Good Head and expression. Very good reach of neck flows into a very good forehand assembly. Well laid shoulder and very good return of the long upper arm. Stands on good legs and feet. Good fore chest and brisket depth. Well ribbed. Straight, firm back. Strong loin. Excellent hindquarters, strong, broad thigh. Well rounded and powerful. Good bend of stifle. Short strong hocks. Good set of tail. Sound throughout. Effective drive and good forward reach with firm topline compliment a roomy and harmonious side gait retaining the pleasing outline he presents in stance.

2 Davidson ANNILANN MISTER BOO Good blue in excellent coat condition. Carrying a few excess pounds. Good head, expressive. Little stuffy in neck. Straight, well boned lets. Pasterns could be firmer. Shoulder could be better laid back. Short, firm topline. Very short loin. Broad, strong thighs. Little short in second thigh. Strong, short hocks. Sound throughout. Moves with purpose and enthusiasm. Good drive and reach. Raises over the loin.

Limit Dog – Any Colour 2,0

1 Davidson RANCECRAIG A MILLION DREAMS Well put together blue roan with good head and expression. Short coupled. Straight, well boned columns. Upper arm could be longer & should better laid. Short firm topline. Good spring of rib. Short, strong loin. Broad thigh. Would like more turn of stifle and ore in the second thigh. Sound throughout. Effective drive and good reach. Topline could be firmer in movement.

2 Furzer DURHAM BLUE Dark blue substantial male. Good head and expression. Correct proportions. Should blades forward placed. Upper arm of good length but steep. Stands on good straight, well boned legs and feet. Short, firm back. Strong loin. Adequate hindquarters. Good turn of stifle. Sound throughout. Lacks drive and fluency in movement.

Open Dog – Any Colour 3,0

1 Scotland LYNWATER ANYTHING GOES Impressive, well-made orange presented to perfection in excellent coat and condition. Well-proportioned of excellent type. Good head and expressive. Very good reach of neck. Excellent forehand assembly, well laid shoulder and very good return of well angled upper arm. Good chest development, deep brisket. Good spring of rib. Straight legs, would like pasterns firmer. Firm topline, strong loin. Excellent hindquarters, broad thighs, well rounded. Excellent bend of stifle. Short strong hock. Perhaps a little more in second thigh would enhance the already striking picture. He uses all he has to maximum effect. He transmits power effectively through a strong loin and back to facilitate forward reach with fluency and harmony, retaining a pleasing outline with excellent deportment. Congratulations BEST DOG and RESERVE BEST IN SHOW.

2 Hynd RYALLCOURT TAN ABOUT TOWN AT SCOMAR Very typey, cobby black, white & tan shown in excellent condition. Expressive and outgoing in temperament. Little stuffy in neck and shoulder could be better laid. Upper arm is long and well angled. Short, firm back. Short strong loin. Well sprung ribs. Very good hind angles. Strong broad thigh, good turn of stifle. Little short in lower thigh. Short strong hocks. Sound throughout. Enthusiastic in movement he drives with purpose and covers the ground effortlessly with a good outline.

Baby Puppy Bitch 6,4

1 Clelland LOCHELLAN PURE KAOS Correct proportioned blue with good bone. Confident and outgoing. Correct forehand angles, firm back, good hindquarters. Sound throughout. Correct sequence of steps and true action maintaining a good outline in a balanced side gait.

2 MacFarlane COOLEELA LAUGHING EYES Balanced black. Well boned, good proportions. Well angled forehand. Good hindquarters. Sound throughout. A little over awed with the occasion. In brief segments displayed a balanced side gait.

Baby Puppy Dog 2,0

1 Flowers TOTENKOPF DRIVING ME CRAZY Very shapely, confident black & tan. Very good bone. Good legs and feet. Good head and expression. Very good reach of nect flows seamlessly into well laid shoulders, short firm back. Strong, short loin. Well ribbed. Excellent upper arm anlge and already well developed in chest. Deep brisket of good length. Very good hindquarters, well rounded. Short strong hocks. True action. Drives with good transmission and good reach. Very good deportment. Retains a very good outline covering the ground with ease and confidence. A classy, confident young puppy who impressed to win BEST BABY PUPPY IN SHOW.

2 MacFarlane COOLEELA PAINTED BLACK Immature black of good bone and substance. Lacks expression. Back is short but needs to firm. Testicles were not in the scrotum at the time of the show and he was a little overwhelmed by the experience.

Veteran Bitch – Any Colour 1,0

1 Rodger KENWAD BLACK OPIUM AT RAVENSGREEN Enthusiastic black in very good condition. Thoroughly enjoying her day out. Short coupled, nice type. Good head and expression. Little stuffy in neck. Short firm back. Good fore angles. Stands on good legs and feet. Good brisket. Good ribs. Short loin. Strong, broad thigh. Little short in second thigh. Sound throughout. Moved with good drive and reach.

Minor Puppy Bitch – Any Colour 6,1

1 Nuttall ROSECOURT PETITOES Appealing black & white ticked. Nice size, correct proportions. Good head with good expression. Shoulder could be better laid and upper am little short but well angled. Short firm back. Well boned, straight columns, good feet. Good ribs, short strong loin. Good hindquarters, little short in second thigh. Balanced, fluent side gait with good drive and reach.

2 MacLean LYNWATER MOON FLOWER Substantial & well developed orange. Strong head, deep muzzle but retains femininity. Good reach of neck flows in well laid shoulder. Upper arm is long but steep. Well boned legs, good feet. Well ribbed. Level, firm topline. Very good hindquarters. Broad, strong thigh. Sound throughout. Powerful hind drive, harmonious gait with good outline.

Puppy Bitch – Any Colour 4,1

Two excellent young bitches, each with quality merits. Both should enjoy bright futures.

1 Duncan ROYAL’S FRIEND ZAIDA’S SERENITY IN BARTONHOLM Well presented dark flue of excellent type. Excellent coat and condition. Sturdy, merry and compact. Good proportions. Nice head would like a more pronounced stop. Good reach of neck. Shoulder could be better laid. Upper arm in long and well angled. Good chest development and depth of brisket. Very good bone. Stands on good legs and feet. Well ribbed. Short strong loin. Strong broad thigh. Very good turn of stifle, lower thigh could be little longer. Well down, short hocks. Drives with power and purpose to cover the ground effectively and harmoniously with good deportment and retaining outline.

2 Nuttall ROSECOURT ROMANCE Stylish, well proportioned and balanced of excellent type. Presented in excellent coat and condition. Feminine head, expressive. Very good reach of neck flows into well laid shoulder with good return and length of upper arm. Well developed fore chest. Short strong firm back. Good set of tail. Very good hindquarters with good bend of stifle. Sound throughout. Powerful drive and good reach create an effortless roomy side gait presenting a balanced and shapely outline.

Junior Bitch – Any Colour 3,2

1 Brennan SPARKLETTE SHINES AT CHARBONNEL Well turned out feminine black with good outline. Strong bone, good legs & feet. Good head and sweet expression. Long neck. Shoulders should be better laid back. Upper arm is long but steep. Short strong back. Would like more spring of rib. Short strong loin. Very good hindquarters, rounded, strong broad thigh. Well let down hocks, Sound throughout. Very good drive from powerful hindquarters, retains a firm back, forward reach should be freer.

Yearling Bitch – Any Colour 5,2

1 Fairbairn MISPERROS INCANDESCENT AT CARMELFAIR JW Attention-grabbing, well presented dark blue in excellent coat and condition. Immediately impressed with her excellent type and attitude. Correct proportions, balanced and well boned. Head could have a more defined stop. Excellent reach of neck into well laid shoulder with good return of a long upper arm. Good fore chest development. Good depth of brisket. Straight columns. Well ribbed. Short strong loin. Level, firm back. Well set tail. Excellent hindquarters, rounded, strong broad thighs. Very good turn of stifle. Well let down short strong hocks. Sound throughout. With enthusiasm she demonstrates a ground covering fluent gait with effective drive and free front reach. She has very good deportment and retains her outline from stance. At each phase she impressed and it was a pleasure to BEST BITCH and BEST IN SHOW

Good hindquarters. She moves with fluency but would benefit from more drive and the back could be firmer.

2 Carmichael TOTENKOPF MYAS REVENGE Merry, sturdy black. Well boned. Good fore angles, well ribbed. Short, strong loin. Stands five-to-one viewed in front. Back is short and firm but raises over the loin. Normal hindquarters lacking in turn of stifle and lower thigh should be longer. Sound throughout. Movement is fluent but lacks drive and front reach should be freer.

Novice Bitch – Any Colour 5,3

1 Flowers TOTENKOPF ALL THAT GLITTERS Classy, appealing orange presented in beautiful coat and condition. Correct proportions. Very good outline, rounded in all the right places. Good head, feminine with melting expression. Very good reach of neck flowing into well laid should and firm straight back. Upper arm long but could be better angled. Very good deep, long brisket. Well ribbed. Strong, short loin. Broad, strong thighs, rounded hindquarters. Very good turn of stifle. Short strong hocks. Sound throughout. In phases she is able to effortlessly drive a harmonious side gait. She just needs to have more confidence and belief in herself. The one I’d have happily slipped in the back of the car and brought home.

Limit Bitch – Any Colour 7,5

Short, strong loin, Rounded, powerful hindquarters with good bend of stifle. Short, strong well let down locks. Very powerful hind-drive and free front reach produce a fluent side gait. In the final phases of competition she raises over the loin which just detracts in the outline image.

Very good, co-ordinated ground covering side gait with effective power transmitted though her firm back, strong loin and enabling a free front reach. Excellent deportment and maintains a very good outline at all times. RESERVE BEST BITCH.

Enthusiastic, balanced side gait which is harmonious but back should be firmer.
