South Western Toy dog Club

Critique for South West Toy Dog Society. Open Show.

Sunday 17th March 2024.

Judge. Sandra Coles (Twyforde)

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Thank you to the officers and committee for asking me to judge at their open show and to all the exhibitors who took part in such a sporting way. I congratulate them on producing exhibits that were clean and healthy after such a trial of a winter.

Thank you to my very able steward Claire Champion who kept things moving at an efficient pace.

Quite a range in size and type made the judging more challenging whilst trying to keep the breed standard in mind. Mouths were generally very good and all exhibits were happy and outgoing.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

1. Hawkins’ Lexody’s Redemption. Six month nicely marked Blenheim puppy with rich chestnut markings and silky coat. Compact size with good bone giving a pleasing outline. Would like slightly larger eye but pigment good. Mouth correct. Well laid back shoulder and enough spring of rib. Good top line maintained standing and on the move. Tail set correct and in line with body when moved. Moved well for his age and mostly parallel going and coming back. Best PD.

2. Thomas’ Amiryck Cisco at Elberryview. Another lovely puppy. Nicely marked Blenheim with perfect spot. Beautifully presented. Slightly longer in back than one. Very pretty head with large dark round eyes correctly spaced. Lovely classic head flat between ears. Mouth correct. Well laid back shoulder and enough spring of rib. Tail set good and held correct when moved. Good turn of stifle. Moving a little close behind and in front.

3. Stansbury’s Cathmead St. David at Dooraclare.

1. Lewis’ Carleeto Cutie Pie. Beautiful rich red ruby shown in superb condition. Masculine head without being coarse. Ear set correct and head almost flat between ears. Stop correct. Large round dark eyes well spaced. Mouth correct. Good reach of neck which he shows when on the move. Enough spring of rib. Shoulders well laid back and good bone all through. Moved confidently and parallel both going away and coming back. Tail carried slightly higher which can at times spoil the perfect outline. But such a lovely showman winning on movement. Best Dog and deserved BOB. Pleased to see that he was short listed for the BIS.

2. Hawkins’ Lexody Pandemonium. Beautifully presented, nicely marked Blenheim. Lovely classic head, almost flat between ears and with correct shallow stop. Dark eyes with nice shape and pigment good. Correct mouth. Good bone throughout. Well laid back shoulders and level top line. Tail set correct and moved O.K.

1. Blackie and Knapp’s Cridensa Connor. Ruby of good rich red colour in good coat and condition. I liked his size and outline when standing. Gorgeous large dark round eyes set well apart. Head almost level between ears and plenty of feathering. Stop not too deep. Correct mouth. Shoulders well laid back leading to level top line. Good spring of rib. Good bone throughout. Movement a little erratic with change of handler but did eventually settle. Close up to B.O.B.

1. Harding’s Svena Shadow Man. Black and Tan of larger build but of good construction which led to his sound parallel movement going away and coming back. Very masculine head with large round eyes and good pigment. Mouth correct. Good angulations fore and back well laid back shoulder and top line good. Tail set good and moved in line with body.

1. Hawkins’ Lexody’s Divination. Well marked Blenheim puppy with spot. Good rich dark colour and she held a pleasing shape when standing. I liked her size and short-coupled body. Eye shape good and pigment dark eyes could be slightly larger. Mouth correct. Head almost level between ears and good ear set. Well laid back shoulders and level top line with enough spring of rib. Good angulations front and rear and moved so well for six months. Good parallel movement going away and coming back. Best P.B. and pleased to award B.P.

1. Franks Cathmead Love Potion No Nine. Lovely size tricolour with the prettiest of heads. Super large dark round eyes. Head almost flat between ears which are well set. Enough reach of neck and good top line. Shoulders well laid back. Short-coupled with good spring of rib. Carrying enough weight. Would benefit from showing on a looser lead. When allowed to have her head she moved more freely and in parallel.

2. Hawkins. Lexody’s Incantation. Another nice puppy that moved well considering the age and first show. Lovely compact size and well broken Blenheim markings. Finer in head but with correct shallow stop. Eyes dark, could be larger. Mouth correct. Well laid back shoulders and level top line. Angles good fore and after. Good parallel movement.

1. Yeates’ Vonnyisle Angel Affect with Merryanna. I liked this little Blenheim bitch very much. So sound all the way through but just leaving all her clothes behind today. The most gorgeous head and eye. Correct classic head with shallow stop. Eyes set well apart with the most beautiful dark pigment and size giving that lovely soft expression I wish I could bottle. Good layback of shoulder leading to level top line and tail set on well. Good bone with nice straight front and rear turn of stifle. Moved so soundly and parallel going away and coming back. B.B. and R.B.O.B.

2. Lewis’ Carleeto Minnie the Minx. Quite a handful this Black and Tan girl but very showy. Pretty head very feminine. Large dark eyes. Mouth correct. Well laid back shoulders and good top line and tail set. Enough spring of rib. Movement good as always from this kennel. Preferred the expression of 1.

3. Frank’s Cathmead Cheridah.
