Lichfield Canine Society

Open Show

7 January 2024

Many thanks to Lichfield Canine Society, for inviting me to judge Afghan Hounds at their two-day premier open show. As this was my first judging appointment, I was slightly nervous but the show committee and my steward ‘John’ made me feel at very ease. The show as a whole was very well organised, presented and run with precision. Thank you to all the exhibitors for your entries and for allowing me the privilege of judging your Afghans.

Afghan hound

Puppy (5, 2 abs)

1 Lancashire & O’Donnell’s Drishaun Don’t Call Me Baby (D) 10-month-old black and tan with a nicely chiselled head, good scissor bite, lovely dark eye with shape and expression. Good shoulder, nice deep chest with spring of rib, level top line with prominent hipbones leading to good fallaway and tail set with ringed tail. Very good angulation, low set hocks and big feet. In great muscular condition, moved with confidence, spring and stride around the ring. BP and BOS, very pleased to hear he won BPIS later in the day.

2 Lloyd & Webster’s Ameserwah All we Hear is Radio Gaga (B) 8 month old pretty feminine black with a lovely head, nice dark eye with shape and far away expression. Good scissor bite, neck, depth of chest, nice level top line, correct tail set with exquisite ringed tail. Moved around the ring with style and grace. Still quite raw and needs to fill out but has the most adorable expression and is certainly one to watch out for as she continues to develop.

3 Shepherd’s Amaserwah a Kind of Magic with Casachared (B)

Junior (6, 3 abs)

1 Lancashire & O’Donnell’s Drishaun What Baby Wants (B) 10 month old red/gold littermate to puppy winner, has length of skull with prominent occiput, dark eye and shape, ears set back, good scissor bite, nice length of neck and depth of chest, level top line with good hip bones and fallaway, nicely set tail. Good rear angulation, low set hocks and big feet. Still a little bit raw but really liked her expression, movement and outline.

2 Drage’s Zendushkas Born to Run (D) 16 month old gold with good length of foreface, dark eye, ears set back, complete with scissor bite, good strong neck, level top line, prominent hip bones with a good tail set. Nice big feet and low set hocks. A little bit of a live wire and needs to settle on the move, which I am sure, will come with time.
