The Scottish Dobermann Club Open Show
2nd November 2024
Thank you to the Scottish Dobermann Club for the privilege of judging at your open show and the warm welcome and beautiful gift, and to my lovely and efficient stewards Scott and Anna for the smooth running of the day. Thank you to all exhibitors for their entries and sportsmanship. I was very impressed with the quality of the entry and the excellent condition in which they were all turned out. I had some tough decision to make on the day, and was very happy with my principal winners.
VD (1,0)
1st McCALL’s Via Felicium Vettel. Strong, compact 8yr blk/r male, well-muscled with good round bone and an alert attitude. Super strong and dry well-proportioned head, with excellent underjaw and the darkest of eyes. Good neck into a moderately angulated shoulder and equal upper arm, with elbows lying close to brisket. Sufficient forechest and straight front legs with strong pasterns and tight feet. Rear angles match the front with good width of second thigh and enough stifle; hocks showing some weakness with age. Short straight topline into a firm loin, well-filled croup and correct tailset. Good balanced profile action, covering the ground well, but a touch wide coming towards. Best Veteran Dog.

1st STRACEY’S Krieger’s Lasting Image. Striking and substantial 9 mths blk/r male, well up for size, with a happy confident attitude. Strong masculine head developing well, long with good depth and underjaw, planes yet to level out, clean cheeks, and flat skull. Long nicely arched neck into moderate front angles set slightly forward, with elbows lying close and forechest well-developed for age. Stands on the tightest of feet with straight legs of good round bone and strong pasterns. Rear angles match front, with correct fall of pelvis and good width of second thigh. Excellent topline and tailset with correct croup. Moved out with enthusiasm showing good reach and drive, just a little close behind today. Best Puppy Dog and Reserve Best Puppy in Show.
2nd McCALL’s Zinedine Zidane Elite House del Diego. 10mth blr/r standard sized and compact boy with a clean outline, rich rust markings and very good muscling for his age. Lovely head, strong and well-proportioned with excellent underjaw, tight darkly pigmented lips, neat ears and super expression from very dark eyes. Good reach of neck into a clean shoulder and slightly shorter upper arm with good return, placing his elbows close to correct depth of brisket. Strong compact topline slopes into a short firm loin; would prefer a little more length and fill to the croup. Very good width of second thigh and strong parallel hocks giving him good drive on the move; a little straight in stifle at this stage but this should correct as he matures.

1st KENT’s Korifey Reckless JW. Almost 2yr old bl/r male, square and compact, moderately angulated and balanced front to rear. Masculine head is clean with very good underjaw, dark eyes and excellent ears for size and set, would prefer more length to the muzzle and a flatter skull. Long dry neck into a clean wither, straight topline sloping into a firm short loin and correct croup. Muscles developing well in his rear; strong and straight hocks give good drive going away. Decent forechest with good depth to tight elbows, straight legs into strong pasterns and super well-arched feet. Best front in the class, straight and parallel, which showed in his true movement coming towards, matched by his balanced and vigorous profile action.
2nd YOUNG’s Krieger’s Hunky Dory at Malibray. Strong 3yr br/r male, well-boned and muscular, not as compact as 1st. Strong head of good length, with parallel planes and a good underjaw with slightly loose lips. Back skull is flat but could be narrower, cheeks are clean, with well-set ears and correct almond eyes of a dark hue to match his rich rust markings. Long lean neck into a good shoulder, would prefer more length and return of upper arm. Very well-developed forechest with good depth of brisket and a tidy underline matched by a strong clean topline. Excellent croup, tailset and pelvis into a nicely muscled rear with a good turn of stifle and strong straight hocks. Moved very well in profile but was untidy coming towards.
3rd BLACKBURN’s Knecht Little Richard JW
OD (4,0)
1st TAYLOR’S Ch Krieger’s Foul Play. Impressive 4yr blk/r, all male with a full-on attitude and commanding presence. Well-set body with ample bone and substance giving a clean and strong outline. Masculine head with parallel planes of equal length, good depth of muzzle and underjaw with dry darkly pigmented lips. Typical expression from well-shaped eyes which could be darker, framed by small, neat ears. Elegant neck flows into a good layback of shoulder with upper arm of equal length, ample forechest with depth to brisket and tight elbows. Legs are straight with firm pasterns and super tight feet. Firm topline slopes into a muscular loin and correct croup and tailset and very well-angulated rear. Expertly handled to showcase his balanced and powerful movement. Best Dog and Best Opposite Sex.
2nd WOODHOUSE’s Ch Jojavik Master Cutler. 4yr blk/r tall substantial male with a super clean and square shape. Handsome head with enough length and good depth, a bit lippy but cheeks are flat with well-set ears lying close and correct eyes for shape and colour. Elegant neck arches into a reasonable shoulder; would prefer more length and return of upper arm. Legs are straight and well-boned, with excellent short firm pasterns and super tight feet. Strong compact sloping topline, drops off slightly at the croup although tailset is correct. Balanced rear angulation and strong hocks gave lovely balanced and reachy profile movement, but I would like to see him more animated in attitude and on the move. Reserve Best Dog.
3rd DOWNIE’s Knecht Mandek
VB (2,1)
1st RIMMER’s Amazon Touch the Breeze in Millwood. 7.5yr bl/r standard sized bitch with a clean feminine outline and medium bone. Pretty head with good length and a narrow backskull, level planes and a dark eye, would prefer more underjaw and strength to foreface. Long elegant neck flows into a straight sloping topline and good tailset; croup is a little rounded. Well angulated front and rear, with good forechest and brisket down to tight elbows. In great condition and very alert, just showing a little weakness in her hocks with age; however, she moved out well with a balanced and energetic gait. Best Veteran Bitch and Best Veteran in Show.

1st STRACEY’s Krieger’s Mirror Image. Super smart 6mth old with an alert and bold attitude and the darkest of brown jackets. Loved her shape– compact and balanced with plenty of bone. Lovely wedge head, well filled with good underjaw and strength to foreface. Long lean neck into a well-laid shoulder and matching upper arm, with brisket down to tight elbows and very good forechest. Topline is super straight and firm into excellent croup and tailset. Just needs to drop back into her knee as she matures. Moved out well and with vigour. An exciting puppy, will watch her with interest.
2nd SOMERVILLE’s Manzart Jean Genie. Blk/r just shy of 8mths, but not the maturity of 1, needing to tighten and strengthen all through. Refined head with nice narrow backskull, almost parallel planes, neat ears and flat cheeks, would prefer more fill and strength to foreface. Decent front angles with forechest developing well. Topline yet to strengthen and a little steep in her rear assembly, causing her to stand a bit ‘bum high’ at this stage, but this should correct as she matures and drops into herself. Moved out well in profile with a lively gait, just a little narrow behind.
PB (3,1)
1st JONES’ Supeta’s Waiting For An Alibi From Korifey. Absolutely stunning br/r bitch, almost 12mths old, presented in super condition with a dark glossy coat, and every inch the showgirl. The sharpest of outlines, with her well-set body flowing smoothly from nose to tail. Head presents an elongated blunt wedge from above and side, with parallel and equal planes, good underjaw and typical expression from dark eyes. Beautiful long neck into a correctly angled front assembly and perfectly parallel front set well under. Faultless topline into a short firm loin, excellent croup and tailset, and pelvis falling away at the desired angle. Super muscular rear with well-bent stifle and strong parallel hocks. Moved out with an elastic, balanced and powerful gait, foot-perfect from all directions. I simply could not fault her and was delighted to award her Best Bitch, Best Puppy Bitch, and ultimately Best in Show and Best Puppy in Show against very tough competition.
2nd NICOL’s Supeta’s Black Rose at Evnjays. Almost 12mth bl/r, litter sister to 1st with a similar clean outline. Feminine head with good length, level planes and slight stop; muzzle still to strengthen. Neat well-set ears and dark eyes with a super expression. Elegant neck into a smooth wither and moderate front angles matched at the rear. Very good topline, compact and straight and held firm on the move, into correct croup and tailset. Well-bent stifle and firm hocks. A little erratic on the move but once settled she was precise and balanced.
3rd SOMERVILLE’s Manzart Jean Genie
JB (4,0)
1st BLACKBURN & TAIT’s Knecht Mirelle. 14mth br/r bitch, strong and substantial whilst retaining her femininity, super confident and very full of herself. Excellent elongated wedge head, well-filled with correct planes, good underjaw and a devilish expression from dark eyes. Very good length of neck into a slightly steep shoulder with upper arm of equal length and return, standing on straight legs with tight feet and elbows lying close to a deep brisket. Solid and compact topline slopes into a well-filled croup and correct tailset, slightly steep pelvis, well-muscled thighs of equal length and a good turn of stifle down to strong hocks. Moved out well from all angles displaying reach and drive.
2nd WITTEVEEN’s Grafmax Rebel Rebel. 13mths br/r. Not quite the substance of 1, but well-muscled and square with a flashy outline. Feminine head with good length and depth, needs a little more fill under the eyes, which are dark and well-placed, with correctly set ears. Reachy neck into a slight wrinkle over the wither from a shoulder a touch upright, and an upper arm with good return. Very well-developed forechest with a deep brisket and good spring of rib. Topline, croup and tailset are all excellent. Pelvis falls away correctly into a well-angulated rear with good bend of stifle, although second thigh is a touch long causing her to hock in a little. Moved out with purpose but a little close behind.
3rd DOWNIE’s Knecht Miluna
YB (3,1)
1st WITTEVEEN’s Grafmax Rebel Rebel – as 2nd in JB
2nd CHAMBERLIN’s Manzart Harliequinn. 23mth blk/r happy girl with a lovely alert attitude, and a great rapport with her handler. Standard size, square and with medium bone. Head has good length, narrow backskull and parallel planes, but needs more strength and fill to the foreface. Long lean neck flows cleanly into a good layback of shoulder with upper arm of almost equal length and elbows lying close to a deep brisket, with sufficient forechest. Topline needs to settle into the required slope, but croup is well-filled and tailset correct. Her rear is more moderately angulated than the front, but she uses her well-muscled thighs and strong hocks to move out with purpose.
GB (2,0)
1st BROUGHTON’s Korifey Anything Goes. 23mth br/r girl presenting a compact and unexaggerated outline, and although carrying a little excess weight had good muscletone and bone. Feminine head with good length, parallel planes, dark eyes and neat well-set ears; needs a little more foreface but underjaw is good. Angulation is moderate but perfectly balanced front to rear, with her parallel front well set under and standing on firm pasterns and hocks with lovely tight feet. Good reach of neck into a clean wither, firm compact topline, and excellent croup and tailset. She was lacking a little ring confidence and needs to settle on the move, but I saw enough to see a balanced and clean gait from all directions.
2nd CHAMBERLIN’s Manzart Harliequinn – as 2nd in YB
PGB (2,1)
1st McCALL’s Igneous Ixidara de Grande Vinko via Diego. Strong 2.5yr blk/r bitch, short-coupled and square, with super rich rust markings. Very strong well-proportioned head presenting an elongated blunt wedge, with level planes, a deep muzzle, excellent underjaw and lovely dark eyes. Moderately angulated front set a little forward, but clean over the wither into a strong sloping topline, firm loin and a slightly short and steep croup. Good depth of brisket to close lying elbows with enough forechest and a nice tuck-up. Rear angles balanced to front with excellent width of second thigh. Moved out vigorously with tidy footfall.
LB (4,0)
1st TAYLOR’s Krieger’s In Style JW. 2.5yr blk/r bitch with a clean and compact outline, with good substance matching her frame. Feminine well-proportioned head, with a great expression from super dark eyes and neat ears. Elegant neck with good reach and a slight arch into a slightly steep shoulder; upper arm has good return but would prefer a little more length to place her legs more under. However her elbows are tight to a deep brisket and well-developed forechest. Excellent topline, croup and tailset, matched with tidy underline rising to correct tuck up. Well-angled rear with good turn of stifle and strong hocks giving her good, powerful drive on the move.
2nd DOWNIE’s Knecht Mileena. Substantial 2yr blk/r bitch, compact and powerful, with clean lines and good proportions giving the required elegance. Beautiful headpiece, strong and well-filled, with parallel planes and plenty of underjaw, super dark eyes and small correctly set ears. Front angles are moderate and set a little forward around a deep brisket, well-sprung ribs and well-developed forechest, and standing on strong pasterns and tight feet. Nice strong and compact topline into a firm short loin, croup a little rounded but tail is set correctly. Very good width of second thigh, correct turn of stifle and strong parallel hocks enabled her to drive out well from the rear. I was splitting hairs between these two girls, however she was untidy coming towards today and this was the deciding factor.
3rd PAGAN’s Manrio Izmir at Trystorme
OB (3,1)
1st BISLAND’s Ch Krieger’s Highland Fling JW. This 3yr br/r strode into the ring with a bold, alert ‘look at me’ attitude that just screamed ‘Dobermann’ – and with the conformation to match. Super sharp outline with everything in proportion, matched with good bone and excellent muscletone to give the right balance of strength and elegance. Attractive head of very good length and depth, with a flat narrow backskull, equal almost parallel planes, clean cheeks and good underjaw, and plenty of fill under dark eyes full of expression. Elegant lean neck flows cleanly into a well-laid shoulder with almost equal upper arm, elbows lying close to a deep brisket with well-sprung ribs, and very good forechest with straight legs down to tight feet. Excellent topline with matching underline, into a firm loin with good tuck up, slightly steep pelvis, and correct tailset. Excellent width of second thigh with equal length to first, and a well-bent stifle. Moved out very powerfully and with plenty of ground coverage, but not quite as balanced on the move today as the puppy winner in the challenge. Reserve Best Bitch and Reserve Best in Show.
2nd FREER & McCALL’s Diego’s Doris Day. Strong and super compact 4yr bl/r with excellent muscle and good round bone. Lovely head, feminine and strong, with level planes and a good length of muzzle, which is deep with excellent underjaw and a clean throat. Long lean neck into slightly steep front angles, with tight elbows to a deep brisket and decent forechest. Topline is straight and firm with the desired slope, mirrored by a tidy underline and good tuck-up, although slightly hidden by a little too much skirt. Rear angles are balanced to front, with strong straight hocks giving clean purposeful movement in all directions.
