Royal Welsh Agricultural Society

Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Ltd

19th May 2024

Firstly I would like to thank you for the society for the invitation to judge at this superbly run show. Everything flowed and my stewards were efficient. Thank you to all exhibitors who braved the heat and received their placings in a sportsmanlike way. This is the first time I’ve been to the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show and it had been a super hot day so that did affect some of the dogs more than others which would have cost them a place or 2.

Pug

Puppy (3,0)

1st - Mrs M Reid - Bubbapug King of Puddings. 11 month old fawn male who has everything in the right places. A large masculine head with lovely dark, round eyes placed well in head. Lovely open nostrils with enough wrinkle. Strong, wide under jaw. Ears are placed well on the head which finishes off the whole expression. Where this dog really scores is his strong neck into well laid back shoulders with a super straight front. Topline is strong and finished with a high set tail, if I was being super picky I’d like a tighter curl. Enough depth of chest and spring of ribs. Rear construction is strong with a good turn of stifle. On the move he out moved the older dogs with a good reach in front and displaying a good drive but keeping the breed roll in rear. BOB, BPIB, TG4, TPG2.

2nd - Ms C Phelps - The Codebreaker at Bilohka. 10 month old fawn bitch. A feminine head, not quite as finished as 1. Would like a slightly larger skull. She has large, dark eyes. Good open nostrils. Neck is arched and strong leading into a strong cobby frame. Good spring of ribs with enough depth of chest. Shoulders are laid back with elbows tights to chest. Good feet. Topline was held on move and stand finished off with a tight curl set on high. Good angles in rear. On the move she has a lovely reach in front. Would have preferred a little more drive in rear.

Limit (1,0)

1st - Mrs M Reid - Bubbapug Queen of Puddings JW. Fawn bitch who oozes femininity. Lovely width to the underjaw giving that undershot bite. Defined wrinkle throughout. Ears are placed well. Strong arched neck which leads into a super sloping shoulder with elbows tight to a deep wide chest. Super straight front. Lovely arched neck leading into a well laid back should. Chest is deep enough for age. Would prefer a straighter front. Good length to body with a high set tail. A good rear assembly and this was evident on the move where this boy had plenty of drive in rear and enough reach in front. BP

2nd - Mrs J Sheldon - Oozzoo Magic Dream. 9 month old dog. Good muzzle to skull ratio. Ear placement is low and carried well. Would have preferred a finer muzzle to balance out the head. Eyes are of good almond shape and place well in head. Enough stop. A clean arched neck leading into a good shoulder placement. A clean straight front. Brought chest and spring of ribs for age. Level topline finished with a high set tail. Angles in rear matches the front. Lost out to 1 on not having quite the drive in rear.

A good tapered muzzle with lips tight. Good bite with forward pointing canines. Neck is of good length leading into a solid level topline. 2nd - Mrs J Hampson - Zerachiel Pretty in Pink. Just over a year old this hairless bitch I don’t think I saw the best of her today. Head proportions are ok. Ears are set low but not quite carrying them throughout. Eyes are of good almond shape and set wide. Neck of good length. Shoulders laid back. Super depth and width to chest. This girl is slightly croup high which throws the overall balance. Rear angles are ok. On the move there was good reach in front but moved wider than preferred in rear.

Limit (1,0)

1st - Mrs J Hampson - Zerachiel The Full Monty. Waow this dog has energy and character in abundance. It was rather difficult to assess this dog on the move as he didn’t quite connect the brain and the legs together. That said he has a masculine head with great muzzle to skull ratio. Eyes are good. Good length to neck. Shoulders are well laid back. Elbows are close to a deep chest. Angles in rear are good with hocks that are well let down. He tends to dip in his topline. Tail is set and carried well.

Open (4,0)

On the move he had great drive from the rear and was matched with good reach in front. BOB TG3

2nd - Lady M & Miss G Kempster & Rees - Oolagha Kristol Ayla JW. 2 year old Powderpuff bitch. Whereas the winner of this class thrived in the heat, this girl unfortunately didn’t which was a real shame as there is a lot to like on this girl and on another day would have won this class. Femininity oozes from the girl in abundance. She has great muzzle to skull proportions. She scores in overall shape size and balance. Lovely expression with those almond shaped eyes that are placed well. Ears are set correctly. Bite is good. Long arched graceful neck which leads into a super front assembly. Straight front limbs. Chest is broad and deep. Topline is strong and level both on stand and on the move. Tail is set correctly although due to the heat she didn’t carry it. Rear is well constructed. With the weather being so hot I did not get to see the best movement from the girl and had to settle for 2nd today.

Miniature pinscher

Havanese

Post Graduate (1,0)

1st - Mr R Niven-Lewis - Maryanns Golden Roses Cathy Rostellar (IMP HUN). What a little cracker this is!! The first thing that struck me was on the first go round on how balanced she was on the move for only 8 months old. Super length to skull with good proportion to muzzle. If I was being picky I’d like to have a little more width. Eyes are beautifully dark and Almond with good pigmentation. Ears are of good shape and placed well. Good length to neck which leads nicely into a well laid should and flows into a super front assembly with straight clean legs finished off with good feet. Lovely topline with that desired rise over loins and finished with a high set tail carried over back. Rear is equally well constructed. On the move this girl is parallel with good drive showing pads and lovely reach in front. I had no hesitation in awarding BOB, BPIB, TG2 and TPG1. I wish you all the best with her.

Open (1,0)

1st - Mr R Niven-Lewis - Rostellars Celtic Warrior. Still a junior dog with some maturing to do. He has a masculine head with good muzzle to skull ratio. Enough stop. Lovely dark pigmentation in nose and around the almond eyes which are set well in head. Ears are placed well finishing off the expression. Neck is of good length. Shoulders are well laid back. Straight front assembly. Would like a little more depth to chest. Topline is good another with a good rise over loin finished with a high set tail that is carried well over back with a full plume. Rear angles are good which came into great use on the move where he has a good drive. And stayed parallel throughout. Unfortunate to meet the puppy today.

Bichon Frise

Open (5,4)

1st - Miss G Stafford- Louisianna Heart Breaker. If anyone needs tips on how to present a dog’s coat to perfection I’d be asking the owner/handler of this dog! At 22 months old this boy has everything in the right place! On the stand he presents a beautiful outline. Skull to muzzle ratio is great, although I would have preferred a little bit more width. Enough stop. Lovely large, dark eyes with super pigment that are set well showing a lot of attitude. Ears are placed well and are of good length. Neck is long, arched and graceful fitting well onto a super shoulder placement. Clean straight front. Elbows close to a well filled chest. This boys rear construction is something to be admired. Lovely muscle, great angulation without being overdone and super feet. Tail is set and carried well at all times. Pads are black. This dog has a lot of “pizazz” about him that he can only occasions get carried away on the move. That said he has super drive showing read pads and has good reach in front. I am pleased to award BOB and TG1 and was thrilled to see him take BIS. I’m sure this boy has a crown waiting for him.

Yorkshire Terrier

Post Graduate (1,0)

1st - Miss B Kerchey - Joangelz Cecilia. At just 6 months this girl is very raw but a promising puppy nonetheless and just needs to settle in order to see the best from her. A feminine head with good shape and size to skull. Ears are small and set correctly. The eyes in this girl are the windows to the soul and boy does she character and spirit. Neck is of good length which leads into well laid back shoulder. Front legs are straight with good feet. Needs to tighten in pasterns as she matures. Topline on stand is good but loses it on the move due to the excitement. Tail set ok. Enough depth to chest. Rear angles are good. I saw enough movement to see that it was correct and parallel. I would love to see this girl in the future to see how she progresses. BP

Open (1,0)

1st - Miss B Kerchey - Murtagh The Macko. 5 year old male who is masculine throughout. Head of good proportion with good size eyes placed well in head. Ears are small and erect placed well on top of flat skull. Good length to muzzle with good bite. Neck is of good length and flows nicely into well laid shoulders. Would have preferred elbows to be tighter to chest. Straight front limbs. Chest has good depth. Angles in rear is good and has plenty of muscle. Topline is super and tail is set well and carried at all times. Coat in super condition. Would have liked to seen him moved quicker in order to showcase his movement. Sound and steady nonetheless. BOB

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Puppy (3,0)

I was really splitting hairs between 1st and 2nd in this class and on another day they could swap.

1st - Miss A Bubb - Wandris Speak Of The Devil. This Blenheim dog is coming up a year old. A masculine headpiece. Lovely eyes which are dark and placed well. Enough under fill under the eyes. Plenty of cushioning on muzzle with enough stop. Ears are placed well and have leather of good length and softened the whole expression. Good length of neck into good shoulder placement. Clean front with elbows tight to a deep well filled chest. Longer in frame than preferred, that said it is level. Tail can be carried a little higher than preferred when on the move. A lovely muscled rear which he uses well. Won BPIB in overall maturity and put on a steadier performance.

2nd - Miss K Hawkins - Lexody’s Divination. A very lovely 8 month old Blenheim puppy who I feel was affected by the heat today which cost her the top spot. Where she scored highly was in shape and size. I don’t usually like to use this term but she is a very “pretty” bitch without being plain. Feminine head which still has a little more developing to do. It’s of good proportion with a good stop. Endearing eyes which are placed well and you can see she is devoted to her handler. Ears are placed well on the skull with good length of leathers. Neck is of good length and shoulders are well laid. Chest still needs to develop but she has time on her side. Topline is level at all times on stand and on the move with her tail being set well which just extends the topline. On the move she used her rear well but was untidy in front. I will watch this girl as she develops.

Junior (4,1)

1st - Miss K Hawkins - Lexody’s Incantation. Litter sister to 2nd in Puppy and a little more mature. Another Blenheim who is great for overall size, shape and balance. Head is developing well with skull flat between the ears and ears placed well. Eyes are lovely and dark and set well. Enough under fill under eye. Muzzle well cushioned and good stop. Lovely neck which leads nicely into good shoulders. Chest is developing well with ribs starting to spring. Straight front with elbows tight. Needs to tighten in pasterns a little. Topline is level and held at all times. Sometimes you look at this girl and think she has no tail but it just never stops wagging which is so lovely to see the happiness this girl displays to be at one with her handler. Angles in rear is good. On the move she is parallel with good reach in front and enough drive in rear.

2nd - Mrs B M Evan’s - Angelarc Ariel - at just over a year this Ruby bitch has lots of attributes. An older fashioned head which could easily get overlooked. Flat skull with super placed ears. Longer in foreface than 1 with good stop. Enough under fill under those dark round eyes. Enough cushioning on muzzle. Lovely neck. Topline not quite as strong as 1. Tailset is good. Front ok. Good depth to chest and spring of ribs. Rear is well constructed with enough muscle. Like myself this girl is carrying just a little bit more weight than preferred. Moved out well being parallel.

Post Graduate (8.0)

A rather mixed class with different “types” but this is how I found them today.

1st - Mrs Jones - Javerdi Fleur Alyse. 2 year old bitch who looked glorious with the sun bouncing off her raven black coat. Head of good shape, although muzzle is longer than what I’d prefer and just upset the balance and softening of the expression a little. Lovely eyes which are placed well. Skull flat and ears are placed and carried well with plenty of feathering. Super front assembly with elbows tight to a deep well filled chest. Straight legs with good feet. Topline was level and held on the move and stand with the tail placed well balancing out the profile. Rear is well constructed. Moved out with drive in rear and reach in front.

2nd - Miss K Hawkins - Lexody Pandemonium JW. A Blenheim male who I have previously judged last year and boy he has matured. Masculine head with a lovely flat skull and ears placed well. Muzzle well cushioned with a good stop. Eyes are placed well although I would prefer them a little bigger to really finish off the headpiece. Neck of good length leading into a level topline. Tail can flag at times. Shoulders are well laid back with elbows close to a deep well filled chest. Rear is good with enough muscle. Coat in super condition. On the move I think another that got affected by the heat towards the end.

Open (6,4)

1st - Ms C Z Martins - Babette Of An Excellent Choice to Clemartill JW (IMP NLD). A Blenheim bitch that I have judged and done well prior to today. I liked her then and still do now. This girl has everything in the right place. Everything is in moderation without being overdone in any way. You could easily walk past this bitch in a line up and not appreciate her qualities but until you get hands on and watch from all angles she is sound and moves with balance, reach and drive. A feminine headpiece with eyes that are dark, round and placed well. A well cushioned muzzle. Enough underfill. Good stop. Lovely flat skull with ears falling nicely and really softening the expression. Neck is of good length leading into a level topline and finishing with a tail that extends the topline. Clean shoulders and front assembly. Equally as good in rear which is muscled well. Although out of coat this doesn’t not detract as it is just the “final touch” BOB.

2nd - Mrs B M - Svena Copper Gleam. A little bit of a wild child but she was great fun to assess. This 4 year old Ruby Bitch has a lovely feminine head with eyes so endearing that are placed well in the head. Good overall shape and size to skull. Well cushioned muzzle. Ears placed well with good length to leather and enough feathering. Neck of good length which lead nicely into well laid shoulder. Straight front assembly. Level topline with tail placed and carried well off the back. Rear is constructed well and uses this to her advantage on the move. Front movement not as strong.

Chihuahua (Long Coat)

Puppy (5,1)

What a lovely class with this is and again the weather was very hot which resulted in dogs further down the line not showcasing their best selves.

1st - Mrs V Colquhoun - Chantaydan Dulce Nina Mia. 8 month old bitch who was really on top form today and demanded that she was given the class. Feminine throughout with a super headpiece. Eyes are large and round which are place well. Ears are well placed and used at all times. Muzzle of good length with definite stop. Neck is arched and leads into the best topline of this class with it being level and held on the stand and the move. Good shoulder placement with straight limbs and small feet. Ribs well sprung for age and good depth of chest. Rear is well angulated with well let down hocks. On the move this girl moves with drive and reach. BPIB

2nd - Miss C Tatlor - Chantaydan Latin Roulette at Gustafski. Litter sister to 1 with similar attributes. What set these 2 apart was the balance on the move with the maturity of 1 giving the edge. A feminine headpiece with beautiful eyes which are placed well. Ears are used well throughout and are of good size. Good length to muzzle. Would like a touch more underfill to finish off the headpiece. Good layback of shoulder with elbows tight to chest. Clean front. Good neck leading into lovely topline finished with high set tail. Rear construction is good with enough muscle and let down hocks. Moved out well.

Junior (4,0)

I kept going back and forward between these 2 exhibits.

1st - Miss C Tatlor - Chataydan Deja Vu. At just over a year old this youngster scores for size and overall balance. Good head proportions with good sized ears placed and used well. The most beautiful large eyes that draw you in. Muzzle is of good length with definite stop. Super neck into a solid topline with a high set tail which is carried at all times. Clean straight front with elbow ls tight to a well filled chest. Moved out with drive and purpose staying balanced and parallel.

2nd - Mrs A Skinner - Mujerosa Lucky For Me. I really liked this boy. Beautiful headpiece with being masculine without being coarse. Super ear size and placement. Lovely large eye which is placed well. Good length to muzzle with a definite stop. Enough underfill. A lovely neck which flows down into well laid back shoulders. Would have preferred a straighter front. Super topline, one of the best ones today. Tail set ok. Rear is well angled and muscled. On the move this boy has great rear drive. In front can get a touch untidy at time just needs to settle into himself. Side profile is superb.

Post Graduate (5,0)

1st - Mrs A Skinner - Mujerosa Hats Of To You. This handler really knows how to get the best out of all her dogs and that really should be commended. 13 month old male who demanded that this class was his. He came in the ring with confidence and attitude which caught my eye. He was of good size and shape. Super front assembly with good layback of shoulder, elbows close to a well filled chest, straight front with good feet. A good shaped head with good proportions. Ears are set well and used at all times. Good size and shape to eye which are placed well. Good length to muzzle with enough stop. Neck leads into a level topline finished with a high set tail. Rear angles are good either way super muscled and we’ll let down hocks. This boy didn’t disappoint on the move either, he had good drive, clean parallel movement and super reach in front. He pushed hard for BOB.

2nd - Miss C Tatlor - Return To Sender with Guftafski. What a promising puppy this is little one is. With head developing well with great proportions. Super flared ears of good size. Eyes are large and set well. Good muzzle length. Good bite. Neck has a nice arch which leads into well laid shoulders. Straight limbs with good feet. Good depth to chest. Ribs need to spring but as matures this will come. Good body length with level topline finished with a high set tail. Rear has well let down hocks with muscle throughout. Moved out with such balance for a youngster being parallel with reach in front and drive in rear.

Open (6,1)

1st - Mr A and Mrs P Lewis- Tyssul Coalman JW. A masculine dog that grabbed my attention upon entering the ring and kept that attention for every moment he was in there. Neck was beautifully arched and of good length. Shoulders were well laid with good return of upper arm. Limbs were straight. Elbows were tight to a well filled chest. Good length to body and topline always level finished with a high set tail. Rear angles were good and were supported with good muscle tone. On the move he made me smile whilst I watched him. He was correct from all angles. Rear drive, reach in front and on side profile everything looked effortless. BOB

2nd - Mrs S Hughes - Trefnanney Peggy Sue. Had the weather not have been so hot I reckon this girl would have given 1 a run for his money as she too was beautifully built. Feminine headpiece with good shape and size skull. Ears were set correctly but not always using them. Eyes were lovely and round and of good size. Muzzle of good length. Enough stop. Neck is arched and in proportion to the body. Shoulders are well laid. Limbs are straight finished with good feet. Chest is well developed being deep and ribs sprung. Top line was level and finished with good tailset which was carried well. On the move there wasn’t quite the drive as 1 but had good reach in front.

Italian Greyhound

Post Graduate (3,0)

1st - Miss J S Thompson - Bytheiad’s Brave Lionheart. Just over 6 months old: I would not want this dog to grow any bigger as he is already up to size. That said he has some lovely qualities. Head is of good length and width. Good muzzle to skull ratio. Eyes are good and placed well. Ears are good. This boy has a good long sloping shoulder, good return of upper arm and super straight legs. Feet are ok. Super depth to chest, ribs just now need to spring to finish the whole chest. Topline is good on stand, but on the move he tends to lose as it as he’s not quite balanced. Rear is well constructed with well let down hocks and good muscle coverage. When moving he demonstrates enough rear drive and lift and reach in front BPIB

2nd - Miss L Smeath - Bytheiad Fair Guinevere at Willingwisp. Litter sister to 1. I preferred the size of this fawn bitch. Doesn’t have the confidence as 1 which showed on the table and on the move which made assessing challenging. I’d suggest some extra training to encourage both dog and handler to be more confident so they can learn together. Pretty headpiece with good ear placement. Planes are good. Ears are good and set well on skull. Neck is ok. Shoulders are well laid, slightly more upright than 1. Good return of upper arm. Straight clean front. Top line not as strong as 1. Enough depth of chest for age. Rear angles ok. Tail set low.

Open (1,0)

1st - Miss J S Thompson - Blue Lagoon of Bytheiad. 6 year old blue dog who was good for over shape and balance. Would like a little more length in head to balance it out. Eyes are lovely and well placed. Ears are set on well on skull. Enough stop. Shoulders have a long slope with return of upper arm. Clean straight limbs with good feet. Good depth to chest with elbows tight. Topline good with the rise over loin and this was help on the stand and on the move. Good rear angles with well let down hocks. Tail is set on low. Moved with good drive balanced with enough reach and lift in front covering the ground well. BOB.

Any Variety Toy

Puppy ( 6,4)

1st - Miss K Hawkins - Lexody’s Divination. This Blenheim bitch moved so much better in this class than what she did earlier in the day. Had she moved like this earlier she would have won her class.

2nd - Miss J S Thompson - Ophis I Got Rhythm at Bytheiad. I spend longer on this Italian Greyhound than what I would normally as she was very unsettled and It appeared she had a spook previously. I had her on the table, moved her then put her back on the table in which she was much better. Appealed for overall size and shape. Good headpiece with good muzzle to skull ratio. Ears set ok could use them a little better. Eyes are good and placed well. Good bite. Neck of good length. Shoulders good. Elbows tight to a deep chest. Legs are straight with ok feet. Due to being unsettled topline appeared flatter than what I think it should be. Lovely rear construction with well let down hocks. Tail is low and carried well. Moved a little erratic. But I saw glimpses of a lift and reach in front. Hopefully with some more hands on this girl will blossom and become more confident showcasing her movement.

Open (2,0)

1st - Mrs A Skinner - Mujerose Bobby’s Heart in Heaven JW. What a smart little man this boy is. At 2 years old he has a matured masculine head with super eye and ear placement. Muzzle of good length and enough underfill. Super clean front assembly with good lay back of shoulder, straight clean front with good feet. Great depth of chest and spring of ribs. Topline was level and secure at all times finished with high set tail: like I mentioned earlier this handler should be commended, with various different dogs entered today each one requires a slightly different way of handling to get the best out of them, and this handler does just that. On the move this boy made it look effortless with good rear drive and lovely reach in front whilst maintaining balance.

2nd - M Hughes - Pipes of Peace at Nantmelan. Year old affenpinscher who has an appealing head with a good upturn which many lack. Good shape to skull and good for size. Wide open nostrils. Lovely dark eyes which are set well. High set ears. Good coat around face finishing off the expression. Good length to neck. Straight front legs with elbows close to a good depth of chest. This bitch is nice and compact with a level topline finished with a high set tail which is carried well. Enough angulation in rear. Coat of great texture. On the move wasn’t quite parallel. But had good reach in front.
