South East Of England Dobermann Club

South East of England Dobermann Club

Open Show

I am so grateful to the Officers and Committee of the South East of England Dobermann Club for inviting me to judge at this wonderfully friendly show. It was an extremely hot day and the officials worked tirelessly to ensure the smoot running of the show taking into account the welfare of the dogs in the heat which made for a super atmosphere. I should like to thank the exhibitors for their patience whilst we changed rings etc., for their good humour and sportsmanship throughout. The hospitality shown to me was first rate and I shall treasure the diamond memento I was presented with as a reminder of such an enjoyable appointment. It was a super entry in terms of number and quality and it was difficult to separate exhibits in some classes. Overall, I thought condition, temperament and dentition were excellent. Whilst length of body did tend to vary, strength of topline and hind angulation was better than when I have judged on previous occasions. Movement, taking into account the heat, was pleasing in most cases. I was particularly pleased with my bitch line-up which made for some difficult decisions. It weas interesting and gratifying to later learn that many of my winners including Best in Show, Best Puppy in Show and Best Puppy Bitch were sired by Ch. Korifey Vanquish, a dog to whom I have awarded top honours as a youngster and who is clearly making his mark on the breed.

MPD (5) 1. Brannan & Mycroft’s Supetas Boys Are Back In Town. Smart brown and rust male of 8 months who pleased me for his balanced, clean outline with well developed and angulated quarters for one so young. He really knew how to present himself using his clean, length of neck to showcase his headpiece which was well proportioned from all angles with very good eye and expression. He had a very good depth of body with adequate width in front and stood on super bone and feet. Slightly sloping topline which he held standing and on the move and good underline for age. He was a purposeful and enthusiastic mover, just needing to tighten a little all round. He very much deserved to be Best Puppy Dog and Best Puppy in Show. 2. Stracey’s Krieger's Lasting Image. Another quality puppy, this black and rust boy of 6 months was very close up to the winner. Again, very well proportioned he was of pleasing size, substance and style. Scored in head which was of good shape with excellent dark eyes lending themselves to a typical expression. Clean neck flowing well into topline and an already pleasing front for width and depth. His angles fore and aft complemented each other well, he was well covered and presented to advantage. Very sound on the move holding his outline. Perhaps a little untidy when coming towards me, but plenty of time for this to improve. 3. Hall’s Supetas Got To Give It Up .

PD (3) 1. Stracey’s Krieger's Lasting Image. 2. Groves, Christensen & Lafford’s Lateagain Starstruck. 11 month brown and rust puppy who going through a growth spurt and as such was rangier all through than the winner. He was very clean in outline and free from exaggeration. Good wedge shaped head with flat skull mounted on a dry length of neck. Pleasing topline which was sloping and strong with a good corresponding underline. His quarters were of satisfactory width. I would have preferred greater layback of shoulder but angles fore and aft were fairly even which gave balance, although I should like to see him develop in hind angulation as he matures. Easy mover who covered the ground well. 3. Hall’s Supetas Got To Give It Up .

JD (3 1) 1. Parker & Henderson’s Tuwos Notorious (IKC). I very much liked the head on this masculine black and rust boy of 15 months. It was classically wedge shaped and well proportioned with correct ratio of muzzle to skull which was flat and punctuated appropriately with correct stop. His clean neck was of good length and was set well into wither flowing well into a firm topline. I found his front to be developing nicely for age and he had good bone. His height to length ratio was not far off square and he scored in underline and strong loin. He has plenty of time to develop more hind angulation as he matures to complete a fairly well balanced profile. He tended to pace on the move, but once he settled he put his well muscled quarters to good use maintaining his outline. 2. Edyveane & Hunt’s Virsco Vagabond. 13 month brown and rust boy who although perhaps more elegantly built than the winner, was of adequate strength and substance for his sex. His head was in proportion to body with super expression emanating from a good eye. Excellent dentition. Good neck and front was well developed being of good width. He didn’t always hold his topline, but he was presented in lovely condition with very pleasing musculature which was evident when he moved powerfully around the ring with ease. Given his age I found him to be a little immature as compared to the winner and felt he had time on his side to develop further into his quarters as he grows on.

GD (2 1) 1. Brough, Brough & Brannan’s Supeta’s Miami Heat for Aniraz. Tidy and nicely short coupled black and rust boy of 15 months. Pleasing strength, substance and bone but I would have preferred a touch more strength to muzzle and cleaner length of neck to enhance his overall profile. Well developed, yet clean front with adequate angulation at shoulder and very good underline although he could have a used a touch more strength of back. Scored in ribbing and strong, firm loin. He had an excellent croup, thighs and hind angulation was developing nicely. Once he settled on the move he demonstrated a good gait with noble carriage and maintained a good outline in motion.

LD (5 1). This was a good class and it was particularly close between 1 & 2 who were both of considerable merit. 1. Brown’s Jojavik Shaken Not Stirred JW. Rising 2 year old black and rust male. He was perhaps slightly longer in body than ideal but his lines were clean flowing from head and neck through topline, croup to hindquarters which pleased me. His condition was excellent and his outline strong with equal angulation at shoulder and stifle, all held together with good coupling from firm loin. I liked his headplanes, strength of jaw and expression. Good front for width and depth supported by good length of leg. On the move, he displayed athleticism and an easy stride. A top contender in the challenge, I’m sure his time will come. 2. Wilson’s Pursang Shimmy Shimmy Ya JW. Another very well made male, brown and rust just over 2 years, who I last judged as a puppy awarding him Best of Breed. He has developed well and still appealed to me. A strong boy, who had excellent height to length ratio with corresponding angles for an aft which I liked very much. Like the winner he scored highly in head for its strength and shape yet still in proportion to body. He had an adequate length of neck but it was not as clean as the winner’s such that he lacked a little elegance when splitting hairs between these two good examples of the breed. Excellent condition, depth and width to body throughout and scored in croup. He drove well around the ring with powerful stride whilst holding his strong topline. 3. Plowman’s Supeta’s Pocketful of Glory JW.

OD (3 2) 1. Seward’s Teuschons The Fierce Knight with Elleonia JW. Extremely honest 2 ½ year old black and rust male who whilst not flashy could not be ignored. He could not fail to stand foursquare with his excellent height to length ratio which was complemented by correct length of leg to depth of body. Another I have judged before having awarded him Best Puppy in Show at a breed club show and I was so pleased to see that he is fulfilling the obvious potential he had then. His head was of good shape from all angles, correctly filled under the eye and good strength of jaw with tight lips. It was in proportion to body and carried atop a slightly arched neck which was clean, set well into wither and a very good front. Textbook topline and underline, he was well covered in excellent condition. Good turn of stifle with thighs of good width. He moved out so well in profile; powerfully yet with ease and symmetry, although could have been a fraction tidier coming towards me. It was a pleasure to award him Best Dog and Best Opposite Sex in Show.

VD (1) 1. Edyveane’s Ch. Jojavik Victor Rizzi at Kateamead. Upstanding brown and rust gentleman who was celebrating his 7th birthday in style! His head was quite strong but so clean, balanced, with strength to jaw and overall in proportion to his body. Front on he looked at me just right with lovely eye. Strong, crested neck, but could have been tidier at throat. Good, clean front, well boned and standing on pleasing tight feet. Lovely quarters that were well developed of good width back and front with even angles which taken all together lent themselves to a pleasing outline that was not far off square. Correct, firm but sloping topline and exceptionally well muscled which was obvious in motion. I found him to be an excellent mover; clean and tidy going out and back and holding his outline in profile going round he could not be denied Reserve Best Dog and Best Veteran in Show.

MPB (4) 1. Luther’s Supeta’s Waiting for an Alibi from Korifey. Elegant brown and rust puppy of 8 months who I thought very attractive with a compact outline. Litter sister to Best Puppy in Show and shared many of his attributes. I loved her head, which was so well shaped with excellent length to muzzle and corresponding length of skull enhanced with lovely tight eyes and a pleasing expression. Clean neck and front, she was standing on excellent feet. Very clean in outline with nothing out of place being nicely angulated fore and aft with super topline and underline. She was just needing to fill out a little more in body for which I felt there was plenty of time. An effortless and enthusiastic mover in good condition she was a very worthy Best Puppy Bitch 2. Trego’s Amazon Breathless. Chunky black and rust baby of just 6 months who was so well developed in body and quarters. Although she shares a sire with the winner she was of slightly different style being somewhat stronger all through. Another who pleased in head properties which was well carried on a strong neck. Lovely depth and width of front, but she could not quite match the feet of the winner. She was so clean through wither, topline and croup with excellent angulation at shoulder and stifle. Lovely croup and width of thigh. Very sound and free when moving although naturally needing to tighten up all round with time. 3. Moss’ Amazon Fever.

PB (6 1). Two quality puppies at different stages of development who with maturity and in different show conditions could no doubt change places. 1. Seward & Mycroft’s Supeta’s Sky’s the Limit wth Elleonia. Black and rust girl of 8 ½ months who impressed me with her lovely profile action on the move which was powerful and easy with drive from behind. She scored highly in head and neck and had a lovely width of front which was also clean and housing well laid shoulders. Firm in topline although I would have preferred her to be slightly shorter coupled for perfect balance. Good turn of stifle with lovely width of thigh and show in lovely condition which enabled good movement although I should like to see her tighten in front movement as she grows on. 2. Groves & Hyett’s Lategain Wish Upon a Star. Well grown black and rust puppy of 11 months who was not dissimilar to the winner in style and outline. Her head was in proportion to body and carried on a clean length of neck. Just enough width of front and she was standing on fabulous feet. Lovely underline and strong, slightly sloping topline, but like the winner this could have been slightly shorter. I liked her width of quarters and good hind angulation although this would have been complimented by a shade more angulation at shoulder. She was sound and steady on the move even if, understandably, affected a little by the heat. 3. Jervier’s Grafmax Prettiest Star.

JB (5 1) This was a super class to judge; four lovely juniors and I found myself splitting hairs to separate them. 1. Pollard’s Shalissa’s Hot Toddy at Whizzbean. I was quite taken with this super black and rust girl of 15 ½ months. She was very showy and threw a super, well balanced outline from evenly matched quarters and good short coupling supported by a strong topline. Her body was well developed, yet being so clean and with flowing lines she had elegance without compromise to strength and function. Her wedge shaped head appealed from all angles with lovely fill under her eyes which were tight, dark and gave a pleasing expression. Her brisket reached elbow and she had good width throughout. I was very impressed with her movement; excellent rotary action in profile with pleasing reach and so true at the hock when moving away from me. She gave a super account of herself in the challenge, and although she didn’t quite have the overall maturity to overcome the winner she was so deserving of Reserve Best Bitch and ultimately Reserve Best in Show. 2. Revell & Hunt’s Virsco Va Va Voom. Classy black and rust girl who was also built on good clean lines. At only 13 months I felt she would benefit from developing a little more depth of body and dropping into her angles, but these were even and thus lent themselves to a fairly well balanced profile picture. Another with a well proportioned and balanced headpiece which was proudly carried on a slightly arched, clean yet strong neck set well into shoulder and flowing well into a firm, sloping topline. Clean underline and lovely tuck-up and good width to shoulder and thigh. Sound as a bell when gating around the ring maintaining her outline throughout but I felt, compared to the winner, she was slightly affected by the heat. 3. Burnham’s Jodaseen All of my Heart.

YB( 3 2) 1. Merret’s Korifey Sweet Child of Mine JW. Pleasing and well made black and rust girl of 20 months who I found to be coming along very well. Her overall proportions and shape were good with nice length to body. Her head was feminine, good strength of jaw, flat skull and attractive front on being enhanced by her good ear which was correctly used. Clean in neck and topline with satisfactory angles back and forth, but I did feel she would benefit from some more time to fill into her body a little more and I should have liked slightly greater tuck up. She was very true moving out and back and held her outline well on the go round.

GB (6 2) 1. Pollard’s Shalissa’s Hot Toddy at Whizzbean. 2. Seward & Mycroft’s Supeta’s Sky’s the Limit wth Elleonia. 3. Caldicott’s Aritaur Cirilla with Philmont.

PGB (3 2) 1. Szulc’s Raava Alamaro (Imp Pol). A well proportioned brown and rust girl of 3 ½ years who was shown in lovely condition. Her head was feminine yet in proportion to her body with satisfactory dentition and expression. She pleased me for height to length ratio and depth of body with corresponding length of leg. I should have liked greater length of neck but it was well set into a good shoulder with good return of upper arm. I would have preferred a stronger topline, but with more ringcraft her handler could enhance this. She was sound on the move if tending to pace, but once settled there was adequate reach and drive.

LB (6 3) Two very good bitches who were close up in terms of quality and style. 1. Goodall’s Maighread’s Bonnie Rosheen to Mianna. A rising 3 year old black and rust bitch standing on lovely feet and bone which served to support an excellent front for width, depth and angulation. I liked her head which was wedge shaped from all angles, although slightly heavy in ear. She had clean, flowing lines through wither and topline into strong and well angulated hindquarters of good width. Pleasing underline and good coupling due to her strong and short loin She put her quarters to good use on the move with power, reach and drive. 2. Tousent, Ingram & Lack’s Jojavik Spangled Mob JW. Classy black and rusk girl I have judged before. I thought her to be maturing very well, although at 22 months she was giving a little away to the winner, being slightly longer in body and needing a touch more hind angulation for perfect balance. However I felt sure her time shall come. Lovely headpiece with well carried ear sat atop a good, strong, dry length of neck into a strong front. Her angulation at shoulder corresponded well to her turn of stifle and she held a strong topline. Another in super condition which was evident on the move with good rotary action and true out and back. 3. Szulc’s Raava Alamaro (Imp Pol).

OB (5 3) 1. Evans’ Ch. Amazon She is Adored JW. Aptly named 2 year old brown and rust bitch who with her classic outline, excellent quarters, balance and condition could not fail to earn my adoration on the day! I loved her head from all angles with correct wedge shape, good planes, dentition and excellent expression emanating from good tight eyes. Her slightly arched neck was clean, of strength, set well into wither and she had adequate width of front. Lovely rib, topline, loin and underline. Correct angulation fore and aft, she was all of a piece. Her handler really got the best out of her on the move which was fluid, yet powerful, with good reach in front and correct rotary action behind. I found her difficult to fault and she did not stop showing all day which made her most deserving of Best Bitch and Best In Show. 2. Szulc’s Raava Alamaro (Imp Pol).

VB (5 3) 1. Glennon’s Supeta’s Red Hot Rocket 9 year old brown and rust lady whose forehand greatly impressed me; correct head shape, excellent neck, shoulder, chest, depth to brisket and ratio of length of leg to body she caught my eye. She had a real Dobermann nobility about her which demanded attention. Very well covered and stronger in stature than many today, but there was no doubting her femininity. Lovely length to body, strong topline and turn of stifle. I would have liked a little more tuck up but with so many attributes and at this age it was not a real issue. Lovely free moving exhibit who stepped out with purpose. 2. Sharp’s Martifers Headliner. 7 year old paler brown and rust girl who was taller and more elegant in build than the winner, but there was certainly nothing weak about her. I found her to have lovely clean lines, although slightly longer in body than the winner, but with firm topline and sweep of underline her lines flowed and she had good depth and width throughout. She stood on lovely tight feet and moved out with good fore extension and drive from the rear.
