West Country Chihuahua Club Open Show

24 July 2024

Best in Show

Huge thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge Best in Show. I have had the privilege to win Best in Show with one of my dogs twice in recent years, so it was a huge honour to judge Best in Show. Many thanks to the Longcoat judge, Domenico Santoriello, and smoothcoat judge, Michael Rossin, for sending through some quality dogs for me to go over.

Best in Show

Sutton’s Nikitos Nowwillieseeme JW, 2-year-old cream and white smoothcoat bitch. This little girl just loves to show! Typical Chihuahua head with apple dome head that is not overdone. Lovely dark eyes of perfect size and shape. Excellent dentition. Correctly set and well used ears, enhancing her lovely expression. She excels on the move, striding out with accuracy, keeping a level topline, she certainly moves with drive as she powers round the ring. Put down in lovely condition, the overall package presented by this dog was more than enough to win her BIS.

Reserve Best in Show

Sutton’s Ultima’tom De L’isle Au Vert Coteau Nikitos (Imp Fra), 14-month-old white smoothcoat dog. Another lovely dog from this kennel. Again, very showy and commanding of the ring. Correct dentition, with lovely expression formed from large dark eyes, very good pigment and well used ears. Presented a well-balanced profile with level topline and well-set tail. Good reach of neck leading to well laid shoulders and correct body length in relation to height. Was very keen to show me what he was made of!

I suspect the smoothcoat judge had some very difficult decisions to make in the challenge!

Best Puppy in Show

Lee’s Ugly Betty De L’isle Au Vert Coteau of Ridgehawk TAF (Imp Fra), 11-month-old black and tan longcoat bitch. Absolutely loved this little girl! I believe this was her first show in the UK. Her dentition is superb, such a pretty head and expression, excellent pigment and beautiful ear set. Well balanced and in proportion, well laid shoulders, level topline, good turn of stifle. It was on the move that I really loved her, and it was this, and her head, that won her BPIS. She is brisk and forceful in her movement and was still happily showing off her attributes right up to the very end of judging. I am sure she has a bright future.

Reserve Best Puppy in Show

Sutton’s Nikitos Nowdontgoaskin, 7-month-old cream and white smoothcoat dog. Happy little chap with pleasing head and expression. Less mature than the winner but he is much younger and still has plenty of maturing to do. Dentition is good, as is his pigment. Large flaring ears, set on correctly. Eyes are well set and of correct size and shape. Muzzle of pleasing length. Well-proportioned with good reach of neck and pleasing front assembly. Level topline which he held firm on the move. Excellent temperament.

Best Veteran in Show

Lee’s Ridgehawk Freds Legacy, 8.5-year-old red and white longcoat dog. This young man still loves to show! Very nice apple dome head shape, with soft and expressive eyes, giving a melting expression. Muzzle of correct length and slightly tapered. He moves with drive, and it was his movement that won him BVIS. He moves around the ring with accuracy, driven by a well-turned stifle in the rear. Good in body (especially considering he is a veteran) and put down in good condition.

Reserve Best Veteran in Show

Sutton’s Ch Lozek Rhapsody in Blue Nikitos, 13-year-old blue fawn and white smoothcoat bitch. I was very impressed with this young lady, and I can easily see why she is a champion. It’s clear that she has never lost her love of showing and she certainly did put on a show! Super head and expression that absolutely does not belie her age. Really well constructed front and rear and still very free moving for her age. Well balanced and lovely in profile. Nothing about this dog gave away her age and she truly is an ambassador for the health and longevity of the breed.
