Scottish Breeds Canine Club

Breed: French Bulldog, Shih Tzu

Scottish Utility Breeds Club Open Show Saturday, 5th October 2024

I would like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge at their show. I had a lovely day in Scotland with some superb exhibits that I was honoured to go over. Thank you all for your entry.

French Bulldog

Puppy Dog or Bitch. 1. Castle Allen Rising Star (IKC). Charming fawn pied puppy, sturdy and compact, with good bone. Square head, with a cheeky ‘frenchie’ expression, skull nearly flat between ears, broad and well defined muzzle, with fine wrinkling. Well placed bat ears, with sufficient width between them. Well rounded in body, good topline, but would like slightly more length to her loin and neck. Just enough angulation behind, with small, compact feet, would like to see her tighten in pasterns with age. She gave her handler a bit of a hard time on the move, but once settled moved cleanly, with a flowing action around the ring. Lovely combination, no doubt more to come from this puppy as she matures. BPIB.

Post Graduate Dog or Bitch. 1. Roalice Mega Mouse. Brindle bitch who I liked a lot as soon as she entered the ring. Good size, compact and well balanced, with no exaggerations. Clearly full of clown-like qualities, fitting the breed description well! Square head, with lovely open nostrils, broad muzzle, square and broad underjaw, and plenty of lip cushion. Dark round eyes, no white showing, medium sized bat ears, which she used to her advantage. Nicely balanced in body, with good length of neck and body, cobby and well rounded, with good cut up. Strong muscular legs, with good angulation fore and after. Free and flowing movement, at times a little hurried, sometimes making her appear restricted, but clean and free when steady. My only wish for her would be to see a little more muscle, this would just finish her off and give her the extra edge. 2. Caslblaks Maxi Jazz Ardhub. Heavier set male, well off for bone and up to size, but with lovely shape and balance. Sturdy, full of courage, and clearly with a lot of affection for his handler. Square head, in proportion, fine wrinkling, broad and well-defined muzzle, and good underjaw. Dark round eyes, with correct size bat ears to complete his expression. Powerful neck, cobby and muscular body, with strong muscular fore and hindquarters. Moved around the ring well. Best Male, and Best Opposite Sex.

Open Dog. 1. Chivasregal Innes of Islay Ardhub. Heavier set male, who is well off for bone. Sturdy and compact, well balanced with affectionate expression. Square head, in proportion, a little heavier in wrinkling than ideal, broad muzzle and underjaw, with medium sized bat ears. Powerful neck, cobby body, would like slightly more length to loin for his balance, good topline and rear angulation. Good movement. 2. Franstelgo’s Low Rider. Nice shape male, who was a little unsettled so didn’t show his best today on the stand, but settled into his stride on the move and covered the ground well. Square head, in proportion, with broad muzzle and underjaw. Medium sized bat ears, but would have liked him to use them more to complete his frenchie expression. Neck is a little shorter in length than desired, cobby body, with good bone and moderate rear angulation. Compact feet, light nails. Moved well in profile, but a little close behind going away.

Open Bitch. 1. Roalice Maxi Mouse. What a charming and vivacious female, with lovely balance all over. Pretty head, square and in proportion, fine wrinkling, broad muzzle and lower jaw, lovely open nostril, with melting dark eyes to complete her expression. Medium sized bat ears, carried upright and rounded at the top. Super cobby body, well rounded with lovely curves, nice topline with enough rise. Good rear angulation. Excels in side profile movement, she had a free and flowing action, covering the ground with ease and fluidity. Nice condition. Showed herself for her handler at all times, what a super partnership. Super BOB amongst some lovely dogs, and was thrilled to see her take Group 4 later in the day. 2. Franstelgo’s Dirty Money. Well balanced bitch, sturdy and compact, with no exaggerations and lots to like. Square head, fine wrinkling, broad muzzle and underjaw, dark eyes, well placed bat ears, unfortunately slightly showing teeth. Good fore and rear angulation, muscular body and correct topline. Small compact feet, would like pasterns slightly tighter. Free and clean movement coming and going.

 Shih Tzu

Open Dog or Bitch. 1. Yazhi Dancing Queen. Broad pretty head, with good width to muzzle, and nose level with the lower eye rim, slightly undershot mouth. Well proportioned, with fair front angulation, and strong level back. I liked this bitch for her size, bone in proportion & well muscled. Long, dense outer coat, with slight wave. Undercoat is present and in good condition. Well plumed tail, to complete the picture. Smooth in movement, with good rear action. BOB. 2. Yazhi The One. Up to size male, would prefer him to be smaller. Good head, broad and round with good width of muzzle, nose is level with lower eye rim, and pigmentation of muzzle is unbroken. Large dark round eye, with good width between and no white showing. Slightly too long in body, with a softer topline, but with good angulation fore and after. Long, dense, outer coat, well plumed tail, but lacking in undercoat today. Good movement.
