Hadrian Basset Hound Club
The Hadrian Basset Hound Club Breed Open Show - 20th October 2024
I would like to thank the hard-working officers and committee of the society for their invitation to judge at this friendly and welcoming show. I was thrilled with my main winners who were in my opinion of outstanding quality. Thank you to my able steward Hannah for her efficiency and good humour. I was blessed by a beautiful setting, with a large ring and slip proof mats which helped the dogs stride out without issues. The cherry on the top of a super day was the lunch time feast of the highest order.
Puppy Dog (3, 2abs)
1st Cudlip’s Harvidene Festive Cheer
This 11 month red & white male was masculine and well bodied. He has a very balanced head with a nice eye and ear set. His neck is muscular and well arched with good length. I loved his depth of chest, excellent bend of stifle and firm rear quarters. He has a very happy disposition and showed well, moving out freely. Should have a bright future. Best Puppy in Show.
Junior Dog (2, 1abs)
1st Roden’s Harvidene Love Potion
Tricolour litter brother to the Puppy dog class winner. He too is well built, masculine and fills the eye. Shown in excellent condition this boy has a very nice head, correct shaped eye and good shoulders. He is a little bum high currently when standing but is a youngster so this may well change. On the move he held his topline and strode out nicely.
2nd Coultas & Smith’s X Factor – Fonz V Grunsven (IMP NLD)
I was disappointed to hear that this top quality tricolour male had recently experienced a scare as this resulted in not being able to go over him properly. What I did see of him, I thought was outstanding. I loved his head, dark lozenge shaped eye and low set long ears. His angulation is excellent and he is balanced, well boned and in super condition. At 13 months of age he shows so much promise and I can only hope he can begin to enjoy showing.
Debutant Dog (1)
1st Royal’s Enguerrand Happy Humphrey
At almost 2 years of age, this masculine male was shown in great condition. He has a beautiful clean outline, broad and level back with excellent tail set and carriage. His rear quarters are well muscled with a fabulous bend of stifle. His head is balanced and he has pleasing, low set long ears. I understand this was his first show which may explain his uncertainty when being assessed on the table. Definitely lots to like about this chap.
Limit Dog (5)
An excellent class of varying type.
1st Strudwick’s Armardio Ride Like The Wind Among Kumamatata JW
Having had the pleasure of judging this red & white male previously, I was delighted that he really put in a good performance today, showing the true showman that he is. There is no doubt that he is all male, simply oozing masculinity and whilst I would not want any more of him, he really is a stallion like boy. I liked his head, dark lozenge eye and well-muscled neck. He has a perfect stern and carriage. His front is clean and correct when coming toward and his rear is powerful and full of muscle. He is very true and quite the picture in profile. Reserve Best Dog.
2nd Cudlip’s Tanneron Hideaway at Harvidene
A younger male of 20 months this red & white has so much potential. A lovely type, size and shape he was shown in great condition with lovely short, smooth coat. He has good ground clearance, nice depth of chest and well rounded ribs. His domed head is masculine with a strong jaw and a lovely length of flew. He is a lovely free moving male demonstrating power from his well correct rear.
3rd Seddon’s Dalpatricks Top Gun at Sedonia
Open Dog (2)
1st Cudlip’s CH Woferlow Voyager at Harvidene
My notes say ‘Wow’ and wow indeed. I found it difficult to look away from this magnificent male who excels in so many ways. At 4 years this tri really is the full package. Not only does he fill the eye stacked, he simply comes in to his own on the move. His head is masculine, balanced and has the correct occiput so true to this breed. His construction is excellent, movement so effortlessly true and he is a lovely size and shape. He stands on fabulous feet that are well knuckled and is wonderful across the body. Not only was he presented to perfection, he was handled superbly. It was a delight to get my hands on a boy of such great quality and I had no hesitation in awarding him Best in Show.
2nd King’s Zawadi Life of Pi
At just almost 7 months this red & white youngster was difficult to assess and had his mind on things other than showing. He has a nice head with a good depth of flew, low set ears and a strong jaw. I would prefer a neater front and better topline, though he is young so this may come. He has a nicely angulated rear.
Veteran Dog (2,1abs)
1st Melbourne’s Diheath Really Cosmic at Kejana
Shown and presented in fabulous condition this tricolour of 7 years is all male and I’ve no doubt could go all day long. He is very fit and well-muscled with a lovely short close coat. I particularly liked his clean outline and topline on the stack. His tailset is correct and he carries his tail nicely on the move. I would prefer a darker eye which I feel would compliment an otherwise pleasing head.
Special Beginners Dog (1)
1st Royal’s Enguerrand Happy Humphrey
Junior Bitch (1)
1st Lamb & Playforth’s Princess Disaster
This very sweet tricolour bitch really made me smile with her happy and outgoing personality. I understand she may have been attending her first show, but this did not show and she performed wonderfully. I really liked her long and low set ears, good length of neck and clean outline. Her reach and drive on the move was excellent and she was powerful and effortless when stepping out. Presented in fabulous condition.
Novice Bitch (1)
1st King’s Quantas Napoca Wilma Zawadi (IMP ROM)
A red & white bitch of 14 months. This feminine girl has a very pretty head, beautiful lozenge shaped dark eye and long ears with the correct inwards curl. I really liked her front assembly, tidy elbows and well-rounded ribs. She certainly has substance but was carrying a little bit of excess weight today.
Debutant Bitch (1)
1st King’s Quantas Napoca Wednesday Zawadi (IMP ROM)
Red & White litter sister to the previous class winner. This one heavier throughout. Shown in great condition this happy girl has a sweet temperament, feminine head and good front. Her head is a nice shape with the correct occiput, and she has a pleasing topline. I would prefer a shade more neck to complete a more balanced picture.
Limit Bitch (5, 4abs)
1st Cudlip’s Harvidene Sapphire
I found this ultra feminine tricolour bitch to be really impressive and I particularly loved her balance and super movement. Stacked she has a beautiful outline, good length of neck and pretty head. She has a good front, super feet and nice lay of shoulder. For me she really comes in to her own on the move. In profile she demonstrates an effortless smooth action and is so true coming and going. Whilst she isn’t the biggest of bitches she is without doubt fit for function and I would imagine she could go all day. Reserve Best Bitch.
Open Bitch (5, 1abs)
1st Coultas’ CH Perfect Peach V Grunsven (IMP NLD)
So aptly named this gorgeous lady is a perfect peach! I have admired her ringside for some time and was delighted to get my hands on her. Now at almost 4 years of age, I was not disappointed and found her to be a lovely shape and size whilst oozing quality. She is feminine with substance and was shown in super condition. I loved her pretty correctly shaped head which is framed with low set long ears. She has super front construction, a prominent breast bone and a long deep body. Her topline is good and she has a great tailset. On the move she is a happy girl and moves freely presenting a very pleasing picture. I really loved her and to top it off she was sympathetically handed to get the best from her. Best Bitch and Reserve Best in Show.
2nd Meldrum’s Cintal Mable Dene
Another red & white bitch, this one 6 years old. From a different mould than 1, this girl too has lots to like. She has a nice feminine expression with dark eyes. I really liked her deep chest, well sprung ribs and broad back. She has excellent reach on the move and is powered from her impressive, well muscled rear which has a lovely bend of stifle. Well handled to get the best from her.
3rd Cudlip’s Whinneybrow Her Majesty at Harvidene
Veteran Bitch (2,1abs)
1st Meldrum’s Kimbleholme Dreamkeeper at Rumbleton
This very fit 8 year old lady was not showing her age at all and is in super condition. She has a pretty, correctly shaped head with a nice eye shape. Her ears are low set with correct curl. Stacked she presents a balanced outline and she moves freely with enthusiasm. Delighted to award her Best Veteran in Show.
