Gundogs and Gundog Group

My thanks to the Society for their invitation to judge Gundogs and the Gundog Group at their open show at Junction 24 Ltd, my first visit to this venue. Thankyou also to my steward who kept the ring running throughout and most of all thank you to the exhibitors who accepted my decisions with good grace. Presentation on the whole was good; where scissor bite is stipulated in breed standards all were correct with the exception of one exhibit. The majority of exhibits made the best of the long narrow ring to demonstrate their movement.

A pleasure to judge these ‘more mature’ exhibits with some unfortunately unplaced as only five places could be awarded. Well done to all.

1st Pike Redclyst Boris (Irish Setter)

A dog I have judged before and he didn’t disappoint here. Presented in excellent coat and condition in profile his topline slopes gently from his muscular arched neck set into correct shoulder lay, down to his strong wide croup and continues through his correct set on of tail. His head is nicely structured with oval skull, ears set low and soft kindly expression. Deep chested with well sprung ribs his front and rear construction is spot on and with good width of stifles and short hock to heel he moved soundly with tail held correctly. Delighted to learn he went on to win Best Veteran in Show.

2nd Osman Fleurfield Firethorn At Marissolo ShCEx (Pointer)

B & W dog with a nice overall shape. A pleasing head and expression with correct eye colour and shape, excellent musculature throughout, good reach of neck settling into correct front angulations, nice depth of chest and ribs well sprung, correct rear angulations, a very sound mover.

Yellow bitch of good proportions, broad skull with soft expressive eyes, feminine no coarseness, well muscled, deep chest and correct angulations fore and aft with good width to second thigh, short heel to hock, good balanced mover with correct tail. BOB

2nd Jeffrey Carohall Day Dreamer At Mibridge

9 year old black dog, a handsome boy with good angulations and depth and width of chest, strong hindquarters, neat feet, sound and balanced on the move.

Cocker Spaniel Post Graduate (1,0)

1st Small Albertean Minerva

11 months blue roan bitch, so pretty and full of ring presence and character. Excellent head shape, the softest expressive eyes with raised brows, ears set low. She has nice bone all through, neat tight feet, well off for forechest and excellent front and rear construction, good depth of chest and well ribbed, strength over loin, good width of thigh, short hocks all of which ensured her sound and balanced driving movement. Loved her. BP and Gundog Puppy Group 2.

1st Salmon Crimicar Indigo Eclipse ShCEx

3 year blue roan boy shown in lovely condition and another with great ring presence. Masculine head without coarseness, square muzzle, dark eyes, low set ears, balanced with good bone and musculature throughout. Stands on straight forelegs and neat feet, has depth of chest and well sprung ribs, strong through topline and over loin, excellent bend of stifle, short strong hocks allowing his flowing driving movement. Super dog full of character. Learned he is the sire of the best puppy and they are so alike I was not at all surprised, he has obviously passed on his excellent qualities. B & W male, appealing overall shape, lovely head and excellent expression to dark eye, good reach of neck into correct should lay, straight front and well ribbed, front and rear construction just right with good width and muscle to second thigh, moved smoothly and effortlessly. BOB, Gundog Group 4

2nd Tragaskis Moenfair Sanguineum Luna JW

L & W, upstanding boy with a nice outline. Owns a good head and expression, good colour of eye and correct muzzle, strong neck and correct fore and aft angulations, stands on neat feet with straight forelegs, albeit a touch wider in front than 1st. Moved soundly, just preferred the smoother movement of the winner.

15 month boy in good coat having rich colouring, flesh coloured nose matching well with his coat, correct head with broad skull, soft expressive almond shaped eye and good ear set. Straight front, good shoulder placement, deep chest and length of rib, topline level, muscular with good bone, sufficiently angled stifle leading into strong hocks, moved true fore and aft.

2nd Roberts Chamarel Winnipeg At Exetollers

5 yr old bitch of correct size, proportionate from wedge shaped head through body with level topline, amber almond shaped eyes, good forechest, well ribbed, good width to loin and strong over croup with sufficient angulation, hocks let down, moved okay.

3 yr old dog, balanced level outline, proportionate. Nicely coated with correct amount of feathering. Head masculine without coarseness, correct ear set on high, good shoulder angulation, correct in depth of chest with well sprung rib, strong over loin and rear quarters, well off for second thigh, short strong hock to heel, moved well with easy going stride.

3 yr old bitch, clean in outline with good muscle tone. Correct head, wedge shaped with expressive eye, well set ears, neck of moderate length and muscle. Straight forelegs and correct in front angulation, good depth of chest, strong and firm through level topline, good bend of stifle and correct tail set. Moved with reach and drive. BOB

Hungarian Vizsla Open (2,0)

1st Reakes Vizslanya Varur With Thrihyrne JW

2 yr old male, russet coated with a pleasing outline and shown in hard condition. His head is masculine of correct construction, his eyes correct and his muzzle square with well developed nostrils. Clean, strong slightly arched neck fits smoothly into his correct front assembly. He has good bone, a good forechest, good depth of brisket and ribs well sprung. Hindquarters are strong with correct angulation, his feet tight. He is balanced throughout and moved purposefully holding his firm level topline. BOB, Gundog Group 2

2nd Parker & Gist Glenbrows Rouge

9 month old bitch, so pretty with beautiful head and kindly inquisitive eye, she is sound all through with good bone and a lovely outline. She is strong over loin, has correct front and rear construction with good depth of chest, neatest of feet, an excellent mover, so balanced with her tail held correctly. She’s surely going to have a bright future. BP, Gundog PGroup 1.

Pretty 12 month old bitch just out of puppy. Good head structure with correct skull shape, a gentle expression, dark wide nostrils, straight front and good depth and width of chest, well off for bone, strong over well sprung ribs, loin and croup, good bend of stifle, width of second thigh, strong rear pasterns and cat-like feet. Exhibited balanced and sound movement for a youngster, with correct tail carriage.

1st Morgan Benoveor Endless Love At Rubydown

3 yr old bitch, lovely feminine head, raised brow over correct expressive eye, correct ear set. Clean neck smoothly set down into good lay of shoulder and return of upper arm, pleasing topline. True in front with good amount of forechest, ample depth and width of chest and spring of rib, ample bone all through. Strong over loin and hindquarters, good bend of stifle and short hock to heel, neat tight feet. Happy, sound and true movement. BOB

2nd Reynolds & McIlwaine Benoveor The Show Must Go On

Young boy at 21 months, presented in good condition. Good head and eye and correct ear set. Has a clean neck into ample front angulation, good in forechest, ribs well sprung back and ample width of loin and hindquarters, has good bone throughout. Not quite the stifle angulation of winner but he still has some maturing to do. Moved well.

Good front with ample forechest, good depth of chest, ribbed well back. Level topline, strong over hindquarters, good bend of stifle, hocks well let down, neat feet. Sound balanced driving movement. 2nd Willcock Dynarkaraky Apatura Iris

12 month old boy just out of puppy and still a bit raw. He has a nice head shape, defined occiput and kind eye under raised brow, ears long and set low. Ample bone and front angulation, strong over body. I felt he had a tad too much bend to his stifle for my preference. Moved ok.

3 yr old liver dog, masculine head with medium stop and defined occiput, hazel eye under raised brow, long muzzle, wide nostrils, low earset with requisite feathering. Strong neck into good lay of shoulder. Level topline, deep chest, ribbed well back. Good bone and musculature, hocks let down, good fore and aft angulation, coat with correct amount of feathering. Moved well.

2nd Willcock Ustorpabyns Fields First Time To Dynarkaraky (Imp Swe)

22 months liver male with a good head with good length of muzzle and kind expressive eye, ample length to his strong neck into good front assembly. Deep chest and ribbed back with strong quarters, well off for bone and overall substance with sufficient rear angulation. Moved well but preferred the tail carriage of 1.

9 month black girl with correct coat and head, black nose, intelligent eye and correct earset. Strong moderate length neck set smoothly into good shoulder lay. Stood over straight forelegs and neat feet. Good body properties for a youngster being good in forechest, chest deep and ribbed well back, level topline with overall strength, moderate bend of stifle demonstrating effortless movement, tail held correctly. 2nd Courtier Maycourt Cover Shot

This 18 month old liver bitch just wasn’t happy and I couldn’t fully get hands on. On the stack she appeared to have a nicely constructed head, good body properties with good bone throughout and good angulation and in good coat. Unfortunate that I couldn’t assess her properly.

Correct wedge shape head, dark brown eye with kindly intelligent expression and correct ear set, moderate neck into correct front assembly, elbows tucked in. Strong through balanced level topline to good rear assembly with moderate angulation. Good chest, deep brisket to elbow and ribbed well back. Good bone, tight feet, making the most of the ring area she moved with purpose with correct tail carriage. BOB

10 month dog and lots to like. Nice head with soft expressive eye, good bone and substance and good depth of chest. Straight forelegs and neat feet, clean strong neck, good lay of shoulder, level topline, ample rib, strong over hindquarters, good rear angulation. Moved out well. BP

Short coupled, strong quarters, good bend of stifle, hocks well let down, moved well, a case of nit picking between 1 and 2.

Darker coated smaller dog, balanced outline and level topline through to correct set on of tail and in good coat. Masculine well structured head no coarseness, dark eye. Strong muscled neck into good shoulder layback and return of upper arm. Proportionate in body construction with substance and good bone all through. Defined forechest with good width between straight forelegs, ribs nicely sprung, short coupled and strong over loin and hindquarters, good stifle angulation, short strong hock to heel, stood four square on neat feet. Moved out well with rear drive maintaining his topline. BOB

Good reach of strong neck with requisite arch leads into good front angulation, forelegs straight, brisket deep to elbows and ribs well sprung. Good bone throughout, strong over loin and rear, tail set off the back correctly. Good bend of stifle, long hip to hock, hocks well let down, free flowing balanced movement with drive and correct tail carriage. BOB

Straight front, deep chest and strong through back and hindquarters. Short coupled and well angulated, hocks well let down. Good topline held on the move with correct tail carriage.

2nd Osman Bournehouse Sirroco Over Marrisolo JW (English Setter)

16 month tri dog, mature for his age with good substance. Presented in excellent coat and condition he has a very nice balanced head with defined occiput and stop and dark expressive eye and low earset. Good reach of neck, shoulders well set back. Straight front and balanced fore and aft assembly. Well off for forechest and well ribbed up.

Strong quarters, good width of second thigh and good bend of stifle and hocks well let down. He demonstrated balanced and sound movement holding his topline with correct tail carriage.

Unplaced in A.V. Gundog Veteran class as she didn’t give of her best on the move, however here she was settled and couldn’t be denied this 1st place. Feminine 8 year old black bitch with clean outline presented in good coat and condition. Classic head, pretty with soft appealing dark eye with chiselling and clearly defined stop and brow. Long muscular neck with slight arch, no coarseness, set into well placed shoulders. Straight forelegs and good bone, deep chest, short coupling, strong hindquarters, good bend of stifle, strong hocks well let down. Her movement flowed whilst retaining her good topline and with a happy tail action. Best AVNSC Gundog

5 yr old bitch with a pretty head, good eye colour with intelligent expression. Correct ears set high, slightly arched muscular neck, good lay of shoulders, straight forelegs, neat feet, good bone throughout. Sufficient depth of chest and well ribbed back, strong hindquarters, good front and rear angulations, good width to second thigh. Smooth effortless movement with correct tail carriage.

Unfortunately he did dance – whilst looking a picture on the stack he was reluctant to cooperate and stand still for me to assess him hands on. I do hope he was soon over it.
