Premier Open Show – Sunday 22nd December 2024

I was thrilled to be asked to judge the feature awards at this lovely festive show, the quality of dogs on show was a real tribute to the officers & committee who continue to provide great shows for their exhibitors. Well done to the very dedicated team. I was spoiled for choice with the quality of dogs presented from the groups which gave me a super if challenging task to select those for the top spot.

YKC Members Stakes

1.    Barrell’s Mifcah’s by Royal Command to Javerda. Stylish Shih Tzu male of 3 years. Good head and eye, lovely neck used to advantage, sound in front and holding the best of outlines at all times. Handled expertly by his very young handler.

2.    Krizova’s Giennah Taarika Mea Maralakes (Imp Cze) gorgeous Australian Shepherd puppy female of just 6.5 months. Has great sound conformation and moves stylishly for one so young. Handled well, full of promise. Should have a bright future.

Best In Show

A fabulous line up with several strong contenders including the classic & stylish Basset, and a super Dalmatian but my final choice for the top spots were:

BIS - Whyman & Murrey’s Lappviken Keltainen of Manu, a beautifully presented Finnish Lapphund male of great bone & substance. Super coat and great mane. Correct size with well- proportioned head and kind soft expression. Good front and correctly angled shoulders set back flowing into a lovely strong and deep brisket. Strong, short loin, held a beautiful outline at all times and moved effortlessly like he could work all day, with a very true and parallel action. He really caught my eye from the moment he entered the ring and has a real ‘look at me’ attitude in the ring. At only 14 months will do his owners proud as he matures.

RBIS – Leonards Witchstone Ace of Spades, a stunning dark muzzled Pekingese male of 19 months. Beautifully presented exhibit carrying plenty but not an over abundance of coat. Lovely ear shape and feathering - super shaped head nice flat width between ears and wide between the lovely dark round eyes. Good broad nose and strong underjaw. Correct front construction with well laid back shoulders, tight elbows and good strong bone. Of a correct weight and size holding a level topline at all times. Good strength of hindquarter with ample turn of stifle and nice low hocks. Great flat feet with no weakness of pastern so moved with style showing the typical roll on a confident positive gait. A breed that I grew up with and understand their characteristics. A credit to his breeders and a delight to examine. Good luck with him in 2025.

Best Puppy In Show

Again, a line-up of tremendous quality and potential – loved the cheeky 6.5 month Shih-Tzu girl, showing for all her worth like a seasoned trooper & the super strong but correctly built stylish 11 month male Bullmastiff but the winners on the day were:

BPIS – Nagrecha & Tate’s Jaeva Don’t Dilly Dally with Chandlimore – stunning 11 months Jack Russell Terrier. A super smart, alert and cheeky girl who had the most eye catching of outlines held at all times. Lovely tapering head with super dark almond shaped eyes, decent stop. Well set ears and a beautifully flowing neck into well laid back shoulders atop nice tightly fitting elbows and strong straight front legs. Great topline into well angulated parallel hindquarters used to advantage on the move. Nice, neat feet. Loved her overall balance, she must have a very bright future. A lovely exhibit, many congratulations.

RBPIS – Mills & Parsons Priorpark Pride & Joy to Nzuri – elegant and upstanding Rhodesian Ridgeback female of 11 months. Another real eye catching exhibit that excelled in overall balance and lovely smooth flowing hound lines. Moderately broad elegant head with a lovely expression and a good strong jaw. Lovely strength of neckline in sloping shoulders and nice tightly fitting elbows. Good bone without being coarse. Super depth of chest and powerful strong back into correctly angulated hindquarters with well let down hocks. Moved true for and aft holding a beautiful flowing outline at all times. Another puppy that will no doubt be heading for the top! Congratulations.
