HIGHLAND CANINE ASSOCIATION 17th August 2024
It was a great pleasure to officiate at this northern show, which allowed me to spend some time visiting friends in the area, and do a bit of sight-seeing too. I can understand the reason for the minimal classification as the ownership and exhibiting of many breeds are not numerically what they are in the south. Thank you to my steward, and to all the exhibitors for your entries. Also, to the BIS judge for awarding my A.S.D top honors!
TIBETAN SPANIELS (Mouths leave a lot to be desired in this breed)
P-GRAD: (3) 1st: TORFNESS GAMEKEEPERS VIGIL (Smith) 2 year old fawn male, who was keeping his handler on her toes today. He presents a nice shape in profile, well balanced, but still has to drop a little in body, and leg. His head is masculine without coarseness, moderate in width & length, with ample chin. Dark oval eyes, and medium sized high set ears giving that typical TS expression. Good neck and shoulder, and level back, with strong hind quarters and turn of stifle. High set tail carried correctly. Moved freely, once he concentrated and got on with the job in hand. BOB & UG4. 2nd: TEINDLAND STRATHISLA (Campbell) Fawn bitch of 5 years. Nice for size, and shape, but bite not ideal. Moved okay, although wider coming towards than one. In good coat. 3rd: BETRANNA ARAMIS (Bruce)
OPEN: (4-1) 1st: BETRANNA AT-LANTA (Bruce) Black bitch just on three years, who appealed for her femininity and pretty stance. She is a nice size, of ideal proportions in length to height. Skull slightly domed, with medium length of well cushioned muzzle. Shortish neck, level back, good ribbing, and decent angulations. In good not overcoated jacket. As in some solid coloured breeds, a full black can be more challenging to assess. Moved well if a little wide in front when it came to the challenge. 2nd: TEINLAND MACDUFF (Campbell) Five year male with a masculine outlook. Head in proportion with his size. Nicely angulated in front. Moderate bone, and substance, but moved a bit unevenly today. 3rd: TEINLAND BENROMACH (Campbell)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOXER (A difficult breed for a judge to assess when they are being fed all the time by their handler’s, I gave up on their mouths!)
OPEN: (3-1) 1st: ARKENEY DESPERADO Von BUGARIVO (AI) (Thompson) Smart looking male of 21 months, and plain brindle colour. He still has a lot of maturing to do, and needs to drop into himself, and let down on the leg. His head is proportionate in skull to muzzle with distinct stop, nicely set dark eye, and good ear placement. Ample length of neck, and nicely angulated front with deep chest, well boned forelegs, curved thighs, and slight slope to the croup. He did tend to stand a little stretched at times, but he covered the ground well on the move with good reach & drive. BOB & WG2. 2nd: BUGARIVO A MODO NOSTRO (Thompson) Red & White bitch of 5 years, who looked the feminine example to the masculine dog. Obviously much more mature in outlook, and settled in show pose. Again, a decent head, nicely constructed fore-quarters, deep chest, well arched ribs, short in loin with good bone, and substance. She was a little covered in build than the dog, but still moved okay.
ROTTWEILER
OPEN: (5) I was spoilt for choice in this lovely class of Rottweilers. 1st: SEITTOR LOOK of LOVE (Bunton) Loved the stance and boldness of this 3 year old male. His body is heavy without being too course. His head proportions are nice with broad skull, arched forehead, fairly deep muzzle, and good stop. Dark medium sized eye, and pendant shaped ears. Strong muscular neck, with well laid back shoulders. Chest, broad and roomy with good ribbing, and slightly sloping croup, with good bend of stifle, strong pasterns and hocks. Moved well, very positive with good hind-thrust, and strength in stride. BOB & WG3. 2nd: BUGARIVO CAOIMHE (Deas) 3.5 year old bitch, who also presents with a nice head type, medium dark eye, pendant ears set correctly, fair length of neck, and lay back of shoulder. Straight back and short in loin. Not quite the stifle angulation of one, but still moved okay. 3rd: JESSICA Von HAUS ISTOKOVIC BUGARIVO (imp srb) ( Deas) Res: SEITTOR MOMENT in TIME (Bunton) Vhc: JACRAILA VALDEMAR (Bunton)
ST. BERNARD
OPEN: (2-1) 1st: CHANDLIMORE RIGHT SAID FRED at ISLAMORADA (Jenkins) At only 8 months old, this big lad is showing a lot of potential for the future. He has right royal breeding, and his stance is very attractive to the eye. His head is large, slightly broad in skull and short in muzzle with a strong jawline. Well defined stop, and dark eye. Long muscular neck, sloping shoulders, and deep chest, with broad back, wide loin and long tail. He has strong bone, and compact feet. He still has to pull it together the move, which I presume in this breed takes a while to accomplish with age and maturity. BP & BOB.
SIBERIAN HUSKY (I appreciate this breed should not carry too much weight, but I did find them rather too rangy all over today).
GRAD: (2) 1st: NAVAJOS MOONAGE DAYDREAM (Emery) Male of 13 months, who at this age just needs to grow into himself, develop in body and mature into adulthood. His head still has to strengthen, to produce a more masculine expression. He has a decent length of neck, slight slope to the croup, well set on fox like tail. Although I found him rather shelley in body, and rangy on the leg, I felt he was better than 2 on the gait. BOB & WG4.
2nd: ALOUSTAIRS NORTHERN STAR (Schaeffer) Loved the type of this 20 month old S.H. She presents a lovely picture in profile, is well proportioned, and balanced throughout. She is well covered body wise, and good bone and substance. She is in good fit condition and carries a double fitting coat. I thought she was going to be my winner today, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to assess her completely due to her being a bit shy on handling. I hope she overcomes this, as I’m sure she will do well in the show ring.
P-GRAD: (1) 1st: NAVAJOS STARMAN (Emery) Brother to Moonage, and similar throughout in type and appearance. A lovely show brace!
OPEN: (2) 1st: SAKINOS EPIC SASS at NAVAJOS (Emery) B/W 2 year old bitch, attractively marked, but I would still prefer a little more substance to her body, which is good in proportion to length and height. She has a nice head, medium in size, with well filled muzzle, and defined stop. Eye colour in keeping with her coat colour. Movement was a bit erratic compared to the younger male. 2nd: ACRYSE HIGHLAND FIREFLY (ShCM) (Heaton-Armstrong) See AVWV.
A.V.W.N.S.C – P/G (2-1) 1st: WANGDAK FARRAH (Nicoll) - Tibetan Mastiff. Black/Tan bitch of 20 months. She is still quite young, but shows much promise for the slow maturing breed that she is. She is strongly built, with good length to her body in comparison with her height. Her correctly curled tail is set in line with her straight back. Plenty of bone and substance to her legs, and compact feet. Her head is strong and well proportioned, with expressive and oval shaped eye. Well set and carried ears. Her movement was good, and appeared free and light for her build. A shame at the end she was a little aloof on handling, but hopefully she will overcome this as she matures. Good luck with her.
A.V.W.N.S.C – OPEN (2) 1st: GRAFMAX OBERON at CAMPERDOWN (JW) Doberman Another stunning dog who appealed for his elegant outline and good breed type. Blunt wedge shaped head with flat skull and slight stop, dark almond shaped eye, and neat high set ears giving him an alert expression. Fairly long slightly arched neck merging into good shoulder placement. Well developed in fore-chest, ribs well sprung, firm back and good top line. Muscular hind quarters with good bend of stifle, and strong angular hocks. Free movement with good reach and drive, and in the most fit for function condition. BOB & WG1. 2nd: W. FARRAH (Tib Mast)
A.V.W. MP (1) 1st: CHANDLIMORE RIGHT SAID FRED at ISLAMORADA (St Bern)
A.V.W.JUN: (1) 1st: BUGARIVO Von ZULU ELIMNYAMA (Rottweiler)
A.V.W.P/G (2) 1st: BUGARIVO FENICE (Boxer) 2nd: W. FARRAH (Tib Mast)
A.V.W.OPEN (3) 1st: GRAFMAX OBERON at CAMPERDOWN (JW) Doberman 2nd: W. FARRAH (Tib Mast) 3rd: EVAN EL BOSK with BUGARIVO (imp srb) Boxer
A.V.W.VET (3-1) 1ST: ACRYSE HIGHLAND FIREFLY (ShCM) Siberian Husky This male can still move out quite well for his age, albeit at a slower pace. He still retains plenty of bone and substance, and nice head qualities. However, his coat has now lost its condition which is only to be expected at 13 years old! 2nd: BUGARIVO ARIZONA (Boxer)

SHETLAND SHEEPDOGS
GRAD: (3) 1st: SHENACHIE SECRETARIAT (Simpson & Main) Sable male approaching 2 years of ideal size, shape and balance. His head resembles a blunt wedge, of correct length, flat skull, ideal stop, almond eye (albeit rather light in shade), and correct ear placement and carriage. Muscular neck merging into well laid back shoulders, and straight front with strong flexible pasterns. He has a level back, and good rear angulation with well bent stifles and strong hocks. He moved well holding a level topline. One who should trouble the best when matured. BOB & PG4.
2nd: MOLSON MULAN (Law) SSW bitch of just 4 years who presented a nice outline in profile. Her head appears slightly deeper through in skull, but she has a nice eye, correct ears, and presents with a sweet feminine expression. She has good bone and substance for her size, and holds her topline well on the move, and very smartly presented too. 3rd: SANDWICK HOURGLASS (Hannah) Blue Merle 3.5 years.
LIMIT: (2-1) OPEN: (2-1) 1st: SHENACHIES MYSTIC OPAL (Hannah) Tricolour of 5 years old, who after winning both her classes, pushed SS hard for BOB today. She presents a picture of femininity, is symmetrical in outline, and has good angulations front and rear, with ideal length to height, level back, and sweep over her loin. Her head is correct in length with well placed stop, dark almond eye, and correct ears on the alert. Her face colouring makes her appear older than what she is. She moved well, with good reach and drive, although carried her head a little low. (Res BOB)
AUST SHEPHERDS
P-GRAD: (4-2) 1st: LOUISTON HELLFIRE (Webster) Striking black tri male of 2 years who is a son of the open class winner. He has a lovely expression all aided by good head and skull proportions, with almond shaped eyes, well defined stop, and muzzle, with strong jawline and correct bite. He has a moderate length of neck, merging into well laid shoulders, moderate bone and sloping pasterns, deep chest and brisket with good ribbing and strong loins. He moved well with ease and a good length of stride on well padded compact feet. Excellently presented. 2nd: BIRKCROSS CURTAIN CALL (Smith) Just rising 2 this girl appeared slightly longer in head and body than L.H. (but a female in most breeds often does) She is up to size but in proportion in length to height. Her head is equal in length to width with a defined stop, slightly arched neck, and good length of ribbing with natural bob tail. Moved okay.
OPEN: (2-1) 1st: MISTYHOLLY MORE MAGIC for LOUISTON (Ch) (Crawford) Stunning blue merle bitch of 7 years, (dam of LH), who stands out for her excellent quality and breed type. She is so well balanced in body, and outline. She has a good neck, merging into well laid back shoulders, deep chest, and brisket, with well sprung ribs, and moderate tuck up. Her front is straight with good leg bone. She has well let down hocks with slight bend of stifle, and neat oval feet. She has a beautiful head and expression, and was keen and alert all the time. She excelled on the move – her gait smooth, free and agile, showing good length of stride and a level topline. I was unaware that she carries her title when I awarded her BOB, and PG1, and was delighted to watch her go BIS!
ROUGH COLLIES
P-GRAD: (1) 1st: STREGATO PERSEPHONE (McColm) Tri bitch approaching 6 years who represents the older ‘type’ of Collie. Her head is rather long albeit clean in outline with correct ear set and carriage, but is rather light in eye. She has a good reach of neck, level back, good tail set and length, and a fitting coat. She moved okay, and showed well.
OPEN: (2) 1st: CORYDON ICE IMPERIAL (Swinton) B/M male of correct, size, shape and balance. At 3.5yrs he is coming to his best in development and maturity. He has a lovely outline, ideal in ratios, with a well arched neck, good layback of shoulder, straight front with elbows under his withers. Good spring of rib, strong loins, and decent rear angulation with good bend of stifle, and strong hocks. He moved soundly with good reach and drive. His head is clean and well balanced in skull to fore face, obliquely set eye, and small correctly placed ears enhancing his expression. BOB. (A shame his owners left the show before the PG was judged!) 2nd: GEMHEID AUTUMNSONG (McColm) B/M bitch of 8.5 yrs who’s coat is text book in colour and markings. She has a feminine head and pretty expression. Fair length of neck, and body with well angulated rear, but was slightly close in rear movement, and looked a little unfinished in presentation due to lack of coat today.
BORDER COLLIES
GRAD: (1) 1st: GLENFOUND FUTURE HOPE (Rettie) And one for the future indeed. At 9 months, this pup is showing much promise. His is shaping up nicely, is very well proportioned and has a nice outline showing a good length of neck, and back, with good onset of tail, a lovely turn of stifle, and well angulated hocks. In head he just needs to look a little more masculine in expression. He has good bone and substance but just needs to gain a little more confidence and become a little more co-ordinated on the move.
P-GRAD: (3-2) 1st: LOCHEIL LOVE FOUND (Donald) B/W bitch who is also well proportioned, in size, shape and outline. She has a good head, balanced, with nicely set oval shaped eye and medium sized ears. She has good legs and feet, and is sufficiently angulated. She moved well. At 2 years she still has to mature to her best, but the potential is there and with time should accomplish this.
OPEN: (4-2) 1st: ROMIODOR MIZZ DYNAMITE (MacDonald) Feminine bitch of 3.5 years who is athletic in appearance. Her head is well balanced, skull fairly broad, with good fore face, dark oval eye, distinct stop, and short, strong muzzle. Slightly arched neck, merging into good lay of shoulder with a good length of body, deep chest, good ribbing, and top line with sloping hindquarters to onset of long tail. Her movement demonstrated a good tireless gait with stealth and speed. BOB. 2nd: SASHDAN DIAMOND DEEVA in GLENFOUND (imp aus) (Rettie) Another B/W lady, who was a different type to RMD. Just on 4 years, she is broader in head, but still has a pleasing expression. She has a good neck, deep chest and strong body with a standard outline and correct bone, and she moved okay.
BEARDED COLLIES
P-GRAD: (2) 1st: DYCHIX INVICTUS for RAZKAL (ShCM) (Ryan) Slate grey male of 4.5 years, who presents with a masculine expression. Square flat skull, large eye, moderate amount of stop, and ears placed well apart. Muscular, well arched neck, good length of body and level back. Well muscled rear quarters, but a little more angulation to his fore quarters desired. He moved okay, keeping a level topline, and steady gait. 2nd: BRADIBAS DEVIL in a BUSH for CALKYLONA (deu) (Costello) Brown bitch of just 2 years, who has a nice head, and pretty expression. She is well angulated at the front, with good length of rib, well bent stifles and low hocks, and presents a well balanced outline in profile. She has a double coat which was well presented. Her movement was not quite as settled today, but hopefully will improve as she gains a bit more confidence.
OPEN: (2) 1st: BRADIBAS BRILLIANT NUTMEG MUFFIN at CALKYLONA (Costello) Brown dog of 7 years who is lean and actively built, balanced in length to height, with good length of ribcage, and level back. Proportionate head features, with broad, flat skull, strong muzzle, and eye toning with coat colour. Muscular neck, deep chest, strong loins from good topline, and long tail. He is well boned with good substance, and moved quite soundly covering the ground with good reach and minimal effort. BOB. 2nd: D. I. for RAZKAL
BRIARDS
OPEN: (4-2) 1st: GILCORU L’INTERDIT D’BRIE (Nelson) Quality fawn bitch of 18 months, who I thought was a nice overall representative of her breed. She has a balanced head, rectangular in shape between skull and muzzle with defined stop, horizontally placed dark eye and good ear placement. She has a good carriage of head, from an arched neck, and well angulated shoulders, level back, slope to croup, and well angulated rear. She portrayed a smooth effortless gait, and I liked her lively character, and approach to showing. Good luck with her. BOB & PG3 2nd: GILCORU UGNI BLANC D’BRIE (Patience) Black male of 6 years very masculine and rugged in appearance. Decent head, with strong muzzle, dark eye, and fearless gentle expression. Strong body with broad chest, although I felt he could be a little more angulated in front and slightly longer in body. Well angulated rear with strong bone and substance. Lacked a little in presentation, but moved well.
A.V.Past IMP REG Open. (3-1) These two 5 year old’s both represented on ideal type of each sex.
1st: KONTRASTAS HUNTSMAN WHITE von NAVAJOS (White Swiss SD) (Emery)
Very handsome male of 5 years old who gives the impression of a soundly built working dog fit for function. His head is wedge shaped, chiselled and parallel with slight stop and triangular high set ears. He has a strong well muscled neck, good upper arm, pasterns, and prominent fore chest. Firm back, strong legs and pasterns and moved very well with good powerful reaching gait. B.A.V.P.I.R.
2nd: BRIGAM SNOW WHITE WOLF to NAVAJOS (White Swiss SD) (Emery) Another 5 year old. Quite the feminine example of the male that she was up against with similar attributes. He just appealed for his overall ring presence today.
A.V.P.N.S.C - P/G & Open (1) 1sT: CELTACASTUS MERA (GSD) (Nicoll) Two year old bitch of smallish stature who’s colour is a bit unfamiliar to me. She has ideal body ratios with well formed ribs, straight back, and good length of croup to hindquarters which are sufficiently angulated. She moved well, and has a steady, self assured nature which is pleasant to see in this breed. B.AVP.NSC.

She has a muscular neck, is well developed in body, with long muscular thighs and low set hocks. She moved well, showing good reach and minimum lift of foot.
