Premier Open Show

01.09.2024

A big thank you to the society for the invitation to this well-run show and the lovely, personalised judging rosette, and thanks to the stewards for the smooth running of the ring. I was grateful to the exhibitors who came out despite it being gundog day at the City of Birmingham Ch. Sh., it was a small, but quality entry; I was very pleased.

Irish setters

Puppy 1 (0)

1. McLaren’s Quensha Lady of Liberty at Teuschon At just 6 months she took everything in her stride. Lovely head, super feminine with nice chiselling and correct finish to her muzzle. She possesses a dark eye with soft expression, paired with a hint of mischief. Low-set ears in a neat tidy fold. Balanced for an aft for her age, with a good front assembly and lovely width to her quarters. She was well put together on the move with a lashing tail, she just needs to tighten at the elbows as she develops. Her coat is coming on well, rich in colour with correct texture. One to watch! BP and thrilled to hear PG4.

Special Yearling 2 (0)

1. Box’s Bardonhill It’s Now or Never at Fernstart At 12 months old, just a day out of puppy, he gave away a lot in age, but he stood out today. Gorgeous head piece, with dark eye and good work, being critical, I would like to see a better finish to his muzzle as he matures on. His well-laid shoulders fit cleanly into a gently sloping topline and correct tailset. Excellent ribbing and firm loin. Wide enough quarters with a sweeping stifle, all in the right for place for his age, no exaggeration. Rich colour and texture to his coat. Strong hocks on the move with appealing head carriage on the move, he couldn’t be denied BOB. Group shortlist.

2. Thomas’ Meldor-sett Fairy Lily at Dawnmaen (Imp Pol) TAF Very feminine bitch with a racey outline. Sweet head and expression with low-set ears. Ample reach of neck, crested, which flows into a good front assembly. Her topline gently slopes, although slightly steep in croup. I would like to see more strength to her hindquarters and see them ‘drop’ as she matures on, but as a young bitch she has time on her side. On the move she shows ample reach and drive, coupled with the excellent rear extension in profile, but going away she had weak hocks today, perhaps struggling with the equestrian flooring. Her coat was lovely and straight, although there could be more of it! Just couldn’t match 1 on the move or for substance.

Open 2 (1)

1. Davis’ Pawsord Prairie Wind with Alanasett JW Super outline to this dog, my favourite of the day. Very typey head piece, raised, quizzical brows, showing ample stop, with a clean finish to his foreface. Lovely moderate neck flows into well-laid-back shoulders, with an excellent feel to his sternum. Perfect topline, ribbing, firm loin, correct croup and well-set tail; everything flowed. Strong rear quarters with well-bent stifle. Presented in lovely bloom. Unfortunately let himself down on the move with his lower head carriage and weak hocks today, perhaps struggling with the uneven floor. He had to give way to a younger dog for BOB at 8 ½ years old, but a very worthy RBOB, thank you for bringing him.

2. Turner’s Gwendariff I Wont ForgetU Different type of dog to my winner, but not to his detriment. Gorgeous head, warm brown eyes but still giving a soft expression. Raised brows showing stop, holding his masculinity. Lovely oval skull. Good reach of neck, but he couldn’t match 1st’s front assembly, being weaker in upper arm. Strong topline, just slightly soft over the croup. Strong rear quarters, with all important width to first and second thigh, and well-bent stifle. Also let himself down on the move today, lacking drive. Presented in lovely coat.
