National Working & Pastoral Breeds Ch Show 2024

Best In Show.

It was a great honour for me to judge BIS at the NWPB Open Show. I’ve attended this show since I was a boy and I never thought all those years ago that I would have this wonderful opportunity. Thank you to the Committee for inviting me. Two lovely dogs had been sent through to the final. Firstly, the winner of the Pastoral Group judged by Diane Stewart Ritchie, the Shetland Sheepdog Walker’s Tooralle’s Ocho Rios JW. Refined but masculine head with correct head planes, eyes and ear set giving a lovely expression. Well-built and balanced in angulation. In great coat and condition and moved nicely around the ring. From the Working Group, judged by Toni Jackson, came the Great Dane, Cranfield’s Zefather’s Ralph Lauren JW. A truly impressive working dog. Of excellent type and strongly built throughout but with that elegance of build so desired in the breed. Great head. Super reachy neck with lovely arch. Fabulous construction throughout. Great muscular condition. Moved so freely and really covered the ground despite a rather trick floor. Loved him. Ultimately, my choice for BIS was the Dane. A super dog and so well handled.

Best Puppy In Show

Two super puppies awaited me. From the Pastoral Puppy Group, judged by Hazel Fitzgibbon, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Kennedy’s Gamuvel Patou Valkyrie at Pyrcot (Imp Lva). A real baby and showing star potential. Head developing well and showing such a lovely expression. Almond shaped eyes of correct colour. Smallish ears which are set correctly. Really well constructed and with good bone for age. In most superlative condition. Moved so soundly in profile. From the Working Puppy Group, judged by Jenny Shorer-Wheeler, the Portuguese Water Dog, Williams & Newton’s Rarjo Captain Curl Macduff. Another super puppy of great quality. Lovely head and expression. He has the correct length of muzzle compared to skull and slightly tapering muzzle. Eyes of medium size. Correct ear set. Well-boned for age and really great to go over. Correctly proportioned for the breed. Moves in the typical fashion of the breed. Another star in the making.  Both were super puppies, but my final choice was the Pyrenean for BPIS.
