Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club Of South Wales

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of South Wales

Open Show

17th August 2024

I offer my very sincere thanks to the Committee, Officers and members of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of South Wales for the invitation to judge at their Open Show, and for the very warm welcome and hospitality that my wife and I received throughout the day. It was very obvious that the committee and members had put great effort into organising and holding this show and all of that effort was worthwhile. There was a warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere, with club officers, committee and club members waiting to greet us as we arrived. This set the tone for the day, and I am grateful for it. The venue was excellent, with plenty of room for exhibitors and a ring big enough to assess movement. I was privileged to have Brian Aubrey and Mark Davies acting as stewards with me and this ensured that the ring was kept moving very efficiently all day. My thanks to you both for all of your assistance. This was my first breed club show and it was a fantastic and very memorable experience.

With a very pleasing entry figure, I had some top-quality exhibits to go over, and the general standard was super. Exhibitors had obviously prepared well, with presentation of their dogs and bitches first class. Shining coats, short nails, trimmed tails and clean teeth were the order of the day, so well done to all. Thank you all for your entries and for giving me the privilege of going over your beloved dogs on the day. I am honoured.  In terms of bites, there was the odd misplaced incisor which wasn’t any real problem, but I did find a couple of very tight canines which would be of concern. On a warm day indoors, I saw no breathing difficulties in any exhibit whatsoever and I am pleased about that.

Minor Puppy Dog (2, 1)

1st. Evans’ Hammystaff I See Fire

Red and white pied. Still very much a puppy and full of play which I don’t mind at all, he is just a baby and should be allowed to be so at this stage. Strong and well off for bone, he has a broad skull with rose ears and the darkest of round eyes. He has a good scissor bite and a strong underjaw. With a broad chest and straight front, good angulations in front, a level topline and well bent stifles, he moved around very well when he settled. He maintained his topline and carried his tail correctly. Plenty of potential in this pup, I wish him well for the future.

 Best Puppy Dog.

Junior Dog (7, 2)

1st. Davies’ Hasburystaff Top Gun

Dark brindle and white with a short, shining coat. A standard sized dog that is a picture of balance, and he oozes confidence; the ring is his when he steps in. He has a strong head, his skull being broad and deep through with a good stop, it is well balanced by his muzzle. His correct scissor bite, with big, white teeth, is housed in his strong underjaw. The neatest of rose ears and dark, round eyes give him a cracking expression. He has straight, well boned legs on the neatest of feet, a deep brisket with a well-muscled forechest, all giving him an imposing appearance. His shoulders are correctly angled, and he has a level topline stood and on the move. He is close-coupled, and his loin is strong and well tucked up. A powerful back end, well bent stifles, and good set on of tail, which he carried correctly on the move, combine with his other qualities to complete a very impressive picture. He is well muscled, and those muscles are hard! A sure-fire champion in the making. Reserve Best Dog.

2nd. Deen’s Ellchansha The Devil In Me at Tondoo

A black brindle of standard proportions. Strong headed with neat ears and dark, round eyes, his skull is well proportioned and with a deep stop. He has a correct scissor bite with big, spotlessly white teeth. His shoulders are correctly angulated, he is close coupled with a well-sprung ribcage, well tucked in the loin and with well-bent stifles. His hind quarters are strong, and he moved around the ring very well. A very nice standard dog in fit condition, his coat was short and close, as required, showing off his muscle tone. He was unlucky to come up against 1st today who just had that bit more all over.

3rd. Butler’s LLanstaff The Game

A powerful black brindle dog with a strong head. A good headpiece with a correct bite and good construction overall. He moved well when settled and I feel his chances would be vastly improved by improving his fitness.

Limit Dog (2, 1)

1st Lloyd-Willaims’ Cwmhâf Celtic Quest

Black brindle of quality and of a style that I very much appreciate. Top sized and beautifully balanced, he is superbly proportioned. His head is strong and not overdone, with great width and depth to his skull, a strong underjaw housing a correct scissor bite of large, white teeth. His muzzle is strong and clean and balances his skull. Well-set rose ears and the required round, dark eyes give him a very pleasing expression indeed. With a correct front, plenty of lift, correct shoulder angulations, a well sprung rib and a well-muscled brisket, he stands on legs with ample bone and the neatest of feet. He is close coupled with a level topline stood and on the move and his loin is well muscled and hard. Well bent stifles with hard muscle in his first and second thighs support his hind end and enable good drive on the move. A correctly carried tail and a well tucked underline present the outline of an athletically constructed Stafford and this is for me all day long. His short, close coat was shining and showed off his muscles. He is fit! When asked to move, he did so very well and worked in harmony with his handler. Another that should attain the coveted Champion title with ease.

He was my Best Dog and Best In show.

Another unlucky to come up against 1st today.

1st. Rowe & South’s Illori Akinlala JW ShCM VW

Black brindle of standard size, very well proportioned. He has a great headpiece which is also well proportioned with a good muzzle housing a correct scissor bite, round, dark eyes and neat, rose ears. He is well constructed all round, close coupled and at 10 years old, he is still very fit with hard muscle and plenty of it. This isn’t accidental. It is clear that he has enjoyed great fitness in his youth and still enjoys his exercise. Credit for this to his owner. His movement was sound out and back. Clearly enjoying his day out, he wasn’t shy about letting us all know! Long may it continue. Best Veteran Dog and Best Veteran In Show.

2nd. Jordan’s Ch Dazmarnic Know What I Mean JW

A red dog of standard size and proportions. Another with a good, well-proportioned head, correctly placed ears and eyes and a correct bite. His shoulders were well laid back, his topline level and his stifles well bent. Not in the condition of 1st, he moved well around the ring.

3rd. Campbell & Campbells’ Berbun Secret Assassin (IKC)

Black brindle and white, he is top height and more terrier in style. His head is well balanced with a good, strong muzzle and a correct scissor bite. Neat ears and dark, round eyes give him a very pleasant expression. He moved very well around the ring. I would like to have had more cover on him, this would enhance his chances greatly.
