South Western Golden Retriever Club – 3rd August 2024
Thank you to the Committee for inviting me to judge at their show. It was a really well run show with a lovely atmosphere alongside the Paignton Championship show which was held in the adjacent ring. Thank you to my steward who kept me well informed of any clashes. I was delighted with the overall quality of the dogs.
Baby Puppy Bitch (2, 0a)
1. Clarkson’s Drumkilty Nollaig Shona. This pale baby had a lovely outline, nice dark pigment, well angulated shoulders, good bone, short coupled with good bend of stifle. Settled on the move.
2. Jenkin’s Owrekvilla Ocean Breeze. Rich golden girl, loved her feminine head with dark pigment. Good reach of neck, level topline. Moved well.
Minor Puppy Bitch (4, 1a)
1. Russel-Bond’s Rosinante Here We Go Again. Pale girl at 8 months old. Lovely head with gentle expression. She has good length of upper arm and shoulders well laid back. Level topline leading to correct rear angulation. Moved settled and well.
2. Scuffle & Ennis Van Maren’s Ramchaine a Red Red Rose. A lot to like about this lady, at just 6 months old she has the sweetest expression and well-defined head. Straight front with catlike feet, good reach of neck. Ribs well sprung, a little straighter in the stifle compared to 1 but just at that age. Moved well.
Puppy Bitch (7, 0a)
1. Collis’s Tillsun Mistletoe Promises. Mid golden 9 month old girl. I liked this girl’s angles, nothing overdone. Nice head with correct bite. Straight front with well placed shoulders leading to a level topline. Good bend of stifle set on well let down hocks. Moved sound and correct. Best Puppy Bitch, Best Puppy in Show
2. Scuffle & Ennis Van Maren’s Ramchaine a Red Red Rose
Junior Bitch (10, 2a)
1. Falconer’s Cheek to Cheek Unbridled Dreams for Siatham. What a lovely girl! Feminine head with kind expression. Well angulated shoulders, good depth of chest and spring of rib. Lovely rear angulation with good second thigh. Moved free and sound fore and aft. One to watch.
2. Fosdike’s Thornywait Royal Design at Meiepere. Well presented mid golden 14 month old bitch. Feminine head with correct bite. Straight front with a good reach of neck leading to a level topline which she held on the move. Correct rear angulation.
Special Yearling Bitch (8, 3a)
1. Pike’s Trebell Thea Into Enthral. At 19 months old, this pale girl has a well chiseled head with kind expression. Good depth of chest, elbows well tucked in. Correct shoulders with lovely reach of neck. Well sprung ribs and short coupled. Moved with drive, well handled.
2. Gayler’s Carolake X’Marks the Spot JW. I have judged this young lady before and it was nice to see how she is maturing. Lovely head with dark pigment. Straight front with tight catlike feet. Good length of upper arm leading to well laid back shoulders. Good second thigh and hocks well let down. Moved sound. Just preferred the overall outline of 1.
Novice Bitch (9, 1a)
1. McNeish’s Ambersun Droops of Jupiter. Well presented bitch with a full rich dark golden coat. Lovely feminine head and expression. She has plenty of substance and a good front and rear angulation. Moved and handled well.
2. Garbitt’s Santandore Toscanini. A finer built girl to 1, pretty feminine head with good pigment. She has a nice level topline, short coupled and good bend of stifle. Moved well
Graduate Bitch (9, 5a)
1. Leeming’s Kadaka Kalypso at Iscadu JW. A lot to like about this girl. Took my attention as soon as she walked in the ring. Straight front, good depth of chest and well angulated shoulders. Level topline, good turn of stifle with hocks well let down. Moved sound and with drive. Reserve Best Bitch
2. Perry’s Stormhayes Spring Willow. Well presented with a rich golden coat. She has good shoulder angulation and well sprung ribs. Level topline with correct tailset leading to correct hindquarters. Slightly down on her pasterns, therefore movement was not as true as 1.
Post Graduate Bitch (3, 0a)
1. Hill & Smith’s Megarvey Déjà Vu JW. Well presented mid golden bitch. Liked her substance and bone. She has a sweet feminine head with gentle expression. Straight front with well angulated shoulders, level topline and plenty of depth. Good turn of stifle, well let down hocks and shown in good muscular condition. Moved straight and true.
2. Ives’s Balsamina Bellini JW. A different type of girl compared to 1 but just as nice. She has a sweet feminine head with great pigment, very attentive to her handler. She has good spring of rib and a lovely, well balanced outline. Moved sound and free, happy girl!
Limit Bitch (6, 4a)
1. Keightley’s Richana a Star Is Born. 4 year old bitch with an in bloom pale coat. Nice head, good depth of chest and ribs well sprung. Strong second thigh and straight well let down hocks. Moved well.
2. Anstey’s Standelbec Request. 3 year old golden girl with nice feminine head. Good bone with a level topline and short coupling. Plenty of depth throughout with well sprung ribs. Slightly down on her pasterns which showed on the move.
Open Bitch (5, 2a)
1. Hill & Smith’s Megarvey Clementine JW. This 3 year old mid golden girl has such a pretty head with gentle expression. Loved her angulation with nothing overdone. Straight front with tight pasterns, well angulated shoulders with good reach of neck . She is strong in the loin with short coupling leading to a good bend of stifle. In great muscular condition which showed as she moved straight and true with drive. Best Bitch and Best in Show.
2. Fosdike’s Meipere You Are My Sunshine (ATC EST). Well presented pale bitch at 7 years old. Liked her straight front with well laid back shoulders. Slightly longer coupled compared to 1. Good turn of stifle and hocks well let down. In good muscular condition which showed in her movement. Such a happy girl on the move!
Veteran Bitch (5, 3a)
What a lovely class of golden ladies.
1. Gayler’s Carolake Remember Me JW. Rich golden girl at 8 years old, in full coat. Nice feminine head with kind expression. Good straight front, deep chest with ribs well sprung. Good rear angulation. Moved sound and well. Best Veteran in Show.
2. Ball’s Fivels Dream Alliance. At 10 years old this lady looked to be enjoying her time in the ring. Nice straight front with tight catlike feet. Level topline, slightly longer compared to #1. Good rear angulation and moved straight and true.
Baby Puppy Dog (2, 0a)
1. Henson & Luckham’s Flyngalee Enterprise. This baby was so handsome for his age, lovely head with super pigment. Great bone and good substance. Moved settled and well.
2. Taylor’s Thornywait Sky Diver. This 5 ½ month old boy was just as you would expect for his age. Well angulated front and rear. Such a happy boy on the move.
Minor Puppy Dog (5, 0a)
1. Clarke-Gear’s Dewmist Danzanatore with Ousevale. At 7 months old, this pale boy had a well chiseled head with super pigment. He has a lovely outline which really drew my eye to him in the line up. Good front angulation, deep chest with ribs well sprung. Correct rear angulation and moved straight and true.
2. Jackson-Haines’s Leighsham the Cheeky Elf. 8 month old boy with a rich golden coat. Well chiseled head with great pigment and correct bite. Straight front with well laid back shoulders, leading to a level topline. Good rear angulation and in good muscular condition. Moved well.

Junior Dog (3, 0a)
1. Macleod’s Bluebraes Bidey In at Rocamar. Well balanced mid golden boy. Lovely masculine head with kind expression. He has good angulation fore and aft. Plenty of depth throughout, good bend of stifle and hocks well let down. Moved well, straight and true. Well handled.
2. Lee’s Calacarey Follows The Sun to Denmarella. At 16 months, this boy has a gleaming super rich golden coat. He has a masculine head with good pigment. Straight front and a good reach of neck leading to a level topline, good rear angulation. Moved well.
Special Yearling Dog (4, 0a)
1. Macleod’s Bluebraes Bidey In at Rocamar
2. Todd’s Van Gogh of Sunshine’s Valley with Toddrosa (Imp Bel) JW. I judged this young boy as a junior so was nice to see how well he is maturing. Well chiseled head with a gentle expression. Straight front with good angulation leading to a lovely reach of neck. Good depth throughout and lovely bend of stifle leading to good rear angulation. Moved straight and true, preferred the drive of 1.
Novice Dog (3, 0a)
1. Fenn’s Fulvia Just Magic at Jandeburn. At 12 months old this boy has a such a gentle expression with super pigment and well defined stop. He has a straight front, standing on catlike feet. Good reach of neck leading to a level topline and correct tail set. I liked his depth overall and rear angulation. Moved correct fore and aft.
2. Gillian’s Grengold Perseus. 23 month old boy with a super rich golden coat. Good angulation fore and aft. Moved ok.
Graduate Dog (10, 1a)
1. Henson’s Cinderbank Move It JW. Another I have judged before, a lot to like about this young lad. Presented with a mid golden coat in great condition. He has a lovely masculine head with nothing overdone. Well angulated shoulders leading to a level topline. Good spring of rib and short coupled, well bent stifles and correct rear angulation. Moved straight and true. Considered in the challenge but unfortunately carried his tail too high compared to the others.
2. Merrik’s Warrenator Tourmakeady. 2 year old boy with a rich golden coat. He has a straight front with tight pasterns and catlike feet. Good lay back of shoulder, plenty depth throughout. Correct tailset and bend of stifle, nothing overdone. Moved well.
Post Graduate Dog (10, 1a)
1. Taylor’s Alibren Aldaniti at Tannadice JW. One I have admired from the ringside. He has the most handsome head with melting expression, you can see he adores his handler. Good length of upper arm and well laid back shoulders. Well sprung ribs and short coupling. Lovely bend of stifle leading to well let down hocks. Moved straight and true with plenty of drive. Reserve Best Dog.
2. Gulliver’s Tonara Moon Walk. Unlucky to meet 1 today. He has a nice outline with nothing overdone. Well chiseled head with correct bite. Good angulation front and rear and plenty of depth throughout. Moved straight and true.
Limit Dog (5, 2a)
1. Taylor’s Alibren Eccles at Tannadice JW. Well presented mid golden boy in full coat. He has a straight front and good reach of neck. Deep through the chest and very well balanced. Good bend of stifle and rear angulation which showed as he moved with drive.
2. Arnold’s Lamyate Acer at Amberland. At 6 years old this boy has a lovely masculine head. He has a straight front and well angulated shoulders leading to a level topline. He has a good turn of stifle and nice cat like feet. Moved well, just not with the same drive as 1.
Open Dog (5, 1a)
1. Simms-Stelling’s Penbridge Play Fast and Loose for StVincent. Just love this boys head and expression with good pigment. He has a straight front with tight cat like feet. Well angulated shoulders with plenty reach of neck. He has plenty of depth throughout and a lovely bend of stifle leading to correct rear angulation. This boy comes alive on the move with drive as he powers around the ring. Delighted to award him Best Dog and Reserve Best in Show.
2. Clarke-Gear’s Ousevale Tobermory JW. Another boy with a lovely masculine head and kind expression. He has great bone and substance and stood on tight feet. Correct angulation fore and aft and plenty of depth throughout. Moved straight and true, preferred the drive of 1.
