Bakewell Premier Open Show
My thanks to the officers and committee for the invitation to judge at their show both days. I really enjoyed my weekend with you all and the weather was fairly kind compared to previous years!
FLAT COATED RETRIEVER PUPPY (0/0)
FLAT COATED RETRIEVER JUNIOR (2/0)
Both of these are litter sisters and feel it is easier to comment on them both together. I really liked the style of both very much, being very typical in shape and head with dark eyes correctly sized ears. I preferred the forehand assembly of the winner as well as being slightly shorter bodied than 2. Both had correctly angulated rears with firm hocks and width over the pelvis. Both not wholly settled on the move but they’re allowed to have fun!
Hedges’, Satinbaze Tranquil Sea
Pacey’s, Satinbaze Tea For Two with Shelkaru.
FLAT COATED RETRIEVER POST GRADUATE (2/0)
Buckley’s, Blacktoft Brindisi by Buckleyhill. Liked the overall make and shape of this dog, being very honest in his overall appearance. Typical head and eye. Liked his forehand very much with obvious forechest and deep brisket. Good bone for his size and used his tail well on the move once he settled, RBOB.
Broome’s, Benvellyn Amur Falcon of Evingbriar. A very impressive dog who makes his presence felt. Loved his long, well moulded head with dark eyes and neat ears. Holds a super topline at all times with correct ribbing, well bent stifles and presented in the hardest condition. Stylish and sound on the move from all angles. Just preferred the front and tail carriage of 1.
FLAT COATED RETRIEVER OPEN (2/0)
Joyce’s, Stranfaer One Fell Swoop. This bitch immediately appealed for her medium sized build and clean lines from any angle. Prettiest of heads with the desired moulding, dark eyes and correct pigment. Excellent neck into shoulder with ample forechest. Correct shape to ribbing with level topline, well angulated hindquarters and correct tail set. Displays such a fluid action on the move, being sound coming/going. Thought her to be delightful, BOB.
Buckley’s, Steelriver Hit The Beach with Buckleyhill. Another very honest male, free from exaggeration. Liked his masculine head and dark eyes. Excellent bone and depth of body with balanced angulation and a level topline. Just preferred the croup of 1.
SUSSEX SPANIEL PUPPY (2,1)
Parkes’, Cassiford Northern Star. 7 months old and making his debut. Loved his extrovert attitude. Decent for size and balance of angulation. Typical in head with clean eyes, enough brow and depth through the muzzle. Excellent topline and width through his quarters. Very sound once settled, would just prefer a bit more of him all over, BPIB.
SUSSEX SPANIEL JUNIOR (3,0)
Penneman & Wakefield’s, Norriss Northern Detective. Liked this male for his substance and width. Such a typical head being wide over the skull with clean eyes, plenty of brow and big nose. Well boned limbs with round feet, would just prefer him a bit more up on the leg. Well bodied up, firm topline and well angulated hindquarters. Goes with a slight roll from the side and very pleasing tail carriage. Pleased to hear after judging that he achieved his JW on the day, congratulations.
Wakefield’s, Una Des Terres De Beaulieu Avec Norriss (Imp Fra). Very pretty bitch whose overall proportions I preferred to 1. Good bone for her size, balanced angulation fore/aft with a firm topline and correct width throughout. I’d prefer a little more to her head all through and decided she would play her handler up today.
Parkes’, Cassiford Northern Star.
SUSSEX SPANIEL POST GRADUATE (2,0)

Allen-Line’s, Deckham Amber Sunrise. Liked her overall shape and proportions very much. Typical head with required width over skull, definite frown and correct eye shape. Correct forehand with firm topline, correct spring of rib. Strongly made rear. Just needs to settle on the move as had a tendency to pace today.
SUSSEX SPANIEL OPEN (2,0)
Davey’s, Sh Ch. Eald Village Scandal JW. Ultra-typy in all departments. More medium sized than some of the entries today but she possesses great bone and substance. Prettiest of heads but so typical with correct width over the skull, plenty of brow, clean eyes and a large nose. Correct angulation fore/aft with firm topline. Easy on the move with a slight roll and as sound as they come, BOB.
Allen-Line’s, Marquell Torshca Chaos. Strongly boned dog, a bit more leg compared to 1. Liked his overall shape and balance of angulation. Uses himself well on the move and is very sound from any angle, RBOB.

Pleased to award her BP and hear she went onto win PG1 & RBPIS!
Hall’s, Borderrush Bean And Gone. Very raw but has the essentials to grow into. Liked her head shape but would prefer a shade more length of muzzle. Good neck into shoulder. Correct ribbing with a firm topline and balanced angulation fore/aft. Really liked how close fitting her coat was of decent texture for age. Needs to settle on the move but saw glimpses of sound and balanced movement when she put her mind to it.

Good overall head piece with correct expression, eye colour and ear set. Straight forelimbs with correct topline and spannable ribbing. Firm hocks when stood. Liked her presence and carriage from all angles. Covered in a thick pelt of correct texture. Pleased to award her BOB.
Hulland’s, Lady Bess at Sanlee. Still very much a youngster with time on her side to finish but her shape and type appealed greatly. Good strength in head with correct proportions of skull to muzzle while still remaining feminine. Correct angulation fore/aft, enough body for age. Sound and steady mover but needs confidence.

Sutton’s, Pipruda Dark Rum at Beckholm JW. A very typy dog of a very handy size and shape sporting an excellent jacket. Masculine head with correct ear set and strong jaws. Moderate length of neck and straight forelimbs. Strong topline, would not want anymore rear angulation. Excellent tailset and carriage. Very easy mover from all angles, RBOB.
Hall’s, Borderrush Magic Bean. Bigger overall than 1 with such a typical head and expression. Moderately angled fore/aft, firm topline and decent ribbing. Excellent tailset and carriage. Very sound mover from all angles but did not quite have the carriage of 1.
