GOYT VALLEY GUNDOG (22/09/24)

Many thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge at this show. The hospitality and friendliness of the club, stewards and exhibitors was second to none.

POINTER

PUPPY (1,0)

Oddie’s, Riowood Tick Tick Boom to Sharnphilly. Very shapely black/white bitch of excellent breed type. Liked her overall size and balance. Superb head with chiselling around the eyes and thin ear leathers. Long neck that flows into a well made forehand. Lovely oval bone and feet. Firm topline, deep enough brisket for age. Well off for rear angulation with a lovely short tail. Goes with ease on the move from all angles. Pleased to award her BP, RBOB and to hear she later went RBPIS!

JUNIOR (1,0)

Gordon’s, Hawkfield Happy Times. This orange/white bitch is strongly made all through with impressive bone. Loved her head shape in profile but would not want her skull any broader. Really liked her angles and curvaceous shape. Correct mover going away and from the side but needs to tighten up coming towards.

POST GRADUATE (5,3) - 2 very different styles of bitch here. I’d be interested to see them both showing in a larger ring to let them fully get into their stride.

Booth’s, Lundgarth Jubilee JW. Middle-sized orange/white bitch of a slightly longer cast. Really liked her head, with correctly-shaped dark eyes giving a soft expression. Reachy neck into well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. Good spring of rib. Corresponding rear angles with correctly set tail. Very precise mover going/coming with an open side gait. Needs a bit more verve to be considered further.

Boulton’s, Condorhawk Starlight on Moreoldglen. A very different stamp to 1. This liver/white is built on slightly taller and more compact lines but with lots of appeal. So typical in head shape with plenty of work, clean lips and thin ear leathers. Good angulation both fore/aft with a deep enough brisket but with time to develop further. The ring size and surface did not give her much opportunity to show what she is truly capable of.

LIMIT (5,3)

Nelis’, Freebreeze Special Effects JW. Orange/white bitch, liked her very much for size and type. Curvaceous in shape and so honest in her construction. Pleasing head shape, particularly liked her eye shape and expression with clean lips. Her long neck flows seamlessly into her shoulders with a long upper arm. Loved her oval bone and feet. Firm topline with good spring of ribs. Enough stifle but stands true when viewed from behind. Not the most outgoing on the move but goes with effortlessly and is sound from all angles using her tail well. BOB

Gordon’s, Hawkfield Witch Doctor. Liver/white dog, he too is of good size. Loved his head, excellent shape viewed from the side with plenty of work around the eyes. His eye shape and colour is pleasing. Good neck into decent shoulder but withers could be set slightly closer together. Liked his straight limbs and correctly shaped feet. Well bodied up for age, with good spring of rib. Good rear angulation but would prefer his croup to be less flat. Loved his tail action and hind movement!

OPEN BITCH (3,0)

Booth’s Sharnphilly Ginger Fizz at Lundgarth. Orange/white, longer cast but still curvy. Very feminine head but would prefer a bit more depth through her muzzle, excellent chiselling and thin ear leathers. Long neck into excellent shoulder placement. Well boned limbs but would prefer better feet. Well bodied up, good topline and rear angulation. Very sound mover all round using her tail well.

Mason’s, Morgan van Freebreeze (Imp NLD) ShCEx. Another orange/white, bigger and stronger bone all through than 1 but with lots of type. Liked her style of head very much with a beautiful expression, lots of chiselling and correct amount of stop but would prefer cleaner lips. Good neck into shoulder, firm topline with good spring of ribs. Well off for rear angulation with a correct tail set. Reluctant to move on this surface today which prevented her being considered further.

Gordon’s, Hawkfield Black Swan.

BRACCO ITALIANO

PUPPY (0,0)

JUNIOR (2,2)

POST GRADUATE (2,0)

Warburton’s, Owlspoint Loads Of Trouble at Herberhouse JW. Orange dog, liked his body proportions being fairly square in outline. Masculine head with typical planes and big spongy nose. Balanced angulation fore/aft. Decent topline. Firm hocks when standing. Goes on an easy stride with breed-typical carriage. RBOB

Fazenfield & Smith’s, Owlspoint Askin For Trouble. Orange dog, litter brother 1. Slightly longer cast. Typical head, moderate but balanced angulations fore/aft. Firm topline and underline. Steady mover from all angles but not as sure of himself as 1.

OPEN (2,1)

Warburton’s, Withamfriary Lush Blossom at Herberhouse. Chestnut bitch, liked her strength in bone and balance of angulation, would not want her any longer in body. Thought her head to be typical with lots of work around the eyes. Good length of neck into correct shoulder placement. Correct topline and underline with enough skin. Well boned limbs and excellent feet. Corresponding rear angulation. Very sound and easy mover from all angles. BOB

WEIMARANER

PUPPY (2,1)

Maskell, Rayner & Maskell’s, Brownbank Willow with Raystans. Liked her very much for type. Feminine head with strong jaws, clean lips and well sized leathers. Long neck into well-made forehand with prominent forechest. Good length of leg with excellent feet. Would not want her any longer in loin. Well off for rear angles with firm hocks. A little lose going & coming (which is to be expected) but has an easy side gait once settled. BOB & BPIB.

JUNIOR (3,1)

Maskell, Rayner & Maskell’s, Brownbank Willow with Raystans.

Mullinger’s, Sunshine Of Your Love JW. Very pleasing for overall type, proportions and shape in profile. Pretty head with enough stop and correct eye shape. Good overall forehand assembly but would prefer a bit more fill in front. Correct topline and moderate rear angulation. A very sound mover all round who maintains her shape.

LIMIT (1,0)

Mullinger’s, Aladdins Genie. Medium-sized dog who is well off for bone. Typical head with enough stop and well sized ear leathers. Decent neck into good overall forehand with well developed forechest. Level topline with good spring of ribs, would prefer him just a bit longer cast. Good angulations in the rear with firm hocks. Sound mover from all angles, maintaining his shape.

OPEN (3,2)

McMahon’s, Ir Sh Ch. Silverkelvin Jupiter over Magdala CW22. Good overall body properties and very balanced. Liked the breadth and shape of the backskull but would prefer a bit more strength through his muzzle. Balanced angulation both fore/aft. Strong bone and correct topline. Good width throughout. Very easy mover when viewed from any angle. RBOB

GOLDEN RETRIEVER

PUPPY (3,2)

Clarkson’s, Drumkilty Nollaig Shona. What a delightful start to this breed entry! Immediately impresses for her body shape and substance for age. Gorgeous head and expression with dark eyes, correct pigment and strength through her skull and muzzle. Strong neck that flows into a well made forehand with well boned limbs. Her feet and pasterns need to tighten up but she has plenty of time to do this. Deep brisket, enough leg and well sprung ribs. Firm topline, strong loin and corresponding rear angulation. Liked her flow through from croup to tail. So precise and easy on the move for one so young. She really made me think when it came to top honours today, BP.

JUNIOR (3,2)

Scott-Briggs’, Largymore Ravagier. A very honest mid-gold dog whose going through his teenage phase. Pleasing profile with ample bone and substance. Excellent head with good shape to backskull and dark eyes. Liked his balance of angulation both fore/aft with a level topline and good length of leg. Just needs to develop more width through his quarters with age. Fluid mover who holds his shape well.

POST GRADUATE (9, 2)

Clarkson’s, Drumkilty Yours Truly JW. Judged this one before as a very raw puppy and she has fulfilled her early promise! Appealed greatly for her angles and clean shape. Prettiest of heads with dark eyes and excellent pigment which emphasised her gentle expression. Reachy neck into good shoulder and upper arm. Excellent depth of brisket and strong topline. Symmetrical rear angles with short hocks. Loved her panache and carriage on the move while being sound from all angles. BOB

Phillips’, Shebelta Sweet Soul Music JW. This male has a very impressive shape and is of a good size with proportionate bone. Loved his head and melting expression. Good neck into shoulder, would just prefer more length of upper arm. Well off for bone with neat feet. Good length of leg with deep brisket, excellent topline and symmetrical rear angulation. Sound and stylish on the move, presented in hard condition.

Magson’s, Castlegolden Classy Girl JW.

LIMIT (5,3)

Bufton & Riley’s, Wylloh Anastasia. A longer cast mid-gold bitch but loved her balance of angulation. Prettiest of heads with dark eyes and good pigment. Mature through her body with well sprung ribs and super bone/feet. Such a fluid action on the move and as sound as they come. Just preferred the toplines of my 2 main winners.

Gannaway-Jones’, Scarisbrick Snowflake. Rich gold bitch from a more compact and moderate mould than 1. Liked her head shape in profile with good shape to skull and muzzle. Good shoulder but not quite the upper arm of 1. Plenty of body with a firm topline and well made rear quarters. Goes on an easy stride from all angles, using her tail well.

OPEN DOG (4,2)

Liggins & Hodge’s, Silver Passion Glam Fashion at Nunsbrook (Imp DEU) JW. Lovely type and size with strong bone and ample substance. Classic head and expression. Good neck into shoulder with decent upper arm. Good spring of rib, firm topline and symmetrical rear angulation with wide thighs. His angulation and body proportions secured him the class. Sound mover away/back and holds himself well from the side.

Munro’s, Alibren Ready Teddy JW. A very honest pale dog, also loved his head and expression. Well bodied up with a deep brisket and well sprung ribs. Absolutely level topline. Preferred the angulation and more fluid stride of 1.

OPEN BITCH (3,1)

Falconer’s, Soneve Simply Special for Siatham JW. Immediately took my eye for her classic shape, not the biggest but so balanced and typy. Gorgeous head with melting expression. Her neck flows into her forehand with well laid shoulders and excellent return of upper arm, good fill in front with well boned limbs and the neatest of feet. Excellent topline, strong loin with correct tail set. Loved her strongly made rear with wide thighs and short hocks. Such a stylish mover with great carriage and presence. Her tail never stopped wagging! RBOB, close up to my overall winner but just preferred the hind action of my BOB.

Magson’s, Castlegolden Classy Lassy. Not too dissimilar to 1 in body shape with good bone. Pretty head and eye. Good neck into correct shoulder. Liked her spring of rib and firm topline. Decent rear angulation and is a very sound mover. Preferred the tail carriage of 1.
