South West Hound Club
I must begin by thanking the Committee of South West Hound Club for inviting me to judge whippets at their show. I was thrilled with my entry of 67 dogs and found quality throughout the dog and bitch classes and was really pleased with my overall winners, of which my Best Puppy went onto Best Puppy In Show. I must finish by thanking my steward Ken, for his efficiency in running the ring.
Puppy Dog (9,1)
1. Howgate & Hull’s Palmik Turn It On Again. A cracking puppy, masculine and elegant. Great for size. A sweet head with fine well set ears carried on a long strong neck. Great lay back of shoulder and return of upper arm, setting his front legs nicely beneath him. Shapely in topline and underline with good depth of chest, would just like a little more covering on him. Well angulated hindquarters with good strength and width to thigh and second thigh. His movement is excellent covering lots of ground with his low front reach and drive from the rear, moving true at all times. BPD, BPIB & BPIS.
2. Perkins’ Silkridge Rapture with Zeglynn. Another nice puppy, mature for his age. Caught my eye from the outset with his curvy shape and balance. Good angulation to shoulder/return of upper arm, with elbows tucked beneath on a straight front. Great shape to topline and underline. Moves well in all directions, just not quite the fluidity in front movement of my winner.
3. Brodie & Owen’s Wolfcastle Crown Jules.
Junior Dog (4)
1. Yacoby-Wright’s Cobyco Catch Your Eye. A quality masculine fawn dog, excellent for size, balance and proportions with nothing overdone and shown in excellent condition. Great head, strength of underjaw and ear placement. Strong neck flowing into well laid back shoulders. Front construction is textbook, with correct angulation, infill of chest and spring to pasterns. Well developed through the body with good spring of ribs, length and strength of loin, and shape to topline and underline complete with a smooth croup and tailset. Hindquarters are well muscled with good turn of stifle and well let down hocks. Very efficient on the move, covering good ground and keeping his shape at all times. BD & BOB.
2. Howgate & Hull’s Palmik Turn It On Again.
3. Arkell’s Hijacked of Suriya.
Post Graduate Dog (8,3)
1. Tristam’s Supeta’s Just Do It. A parti coloured dog I have had the pleasure of judging before. Excellent head, soft expression and correctly set, fine, rose shaped ears. Good amount of bladed bone and well sprung pasterns. Moves true coming and going and in profile shapes up well.
2. Brodie & Owen’s Wolfcastle Livin The Dream. Brindle dog built on a longer frame than the winner. Good shape to top and underline, with well developed body and strength of loin. Well angulated and muscled hindquarters without being overdone. Has a great side gait, could just be cleaner coming towards.
3. Arkell’s Chikara Iz Doma Proninykh.
Limit Dog (13, 4)
1. Winter, Yeates & Moreland’s Zoraden Maserati JW. Another masculine dog, good for size and excellent proportions. Caught my eye from the outset of this class with his excellent movement on the initial go around. Nice head on long strong neck. Great front with well laid shoulders and return of upper arm. Graceful curve to topline and excellent underline, leading into smooth croup which is kept on the move. Well angulated hindquarters but somewhat over muscled which caught my attention when moving away, despite this moves very sound with excellent reach and drive. RBD.
2. Webber’s Lolani Ride A Wild Trail JW. A quality dog of nice size and in great condition. Different in type to the winner of this class. Well balanced in angulation through front and rear with good depth and spring of ribs. Deceivingly appears short coupled when stacked but moving lengthens and has a nice shape to top and underline. Moves true in all directions, just lacking the enthusiasm of 1.
3. Trouton’s Runnel Run For Fun. BVD & BVIB.
Open Dog (5,2)
1. Sheperd’s Kidaruka It’s Showtime for Oxana. A flashy fawn dog with white trim covering plenty of ground naturally. Nice head proportions with good strength to underjaw, and fine correctly set ears. Shapely topline and underling with good depth and spring of ribs and good front infill. Correct bladed bone, enough spring to pastern and good feet. Moves with enthusiasm keeping his shape in profile with good drive from the rear, could be a little cleaner coming towards.
2. Rishworth’s Kierpark With Or Without You. Elegant brindle dog of nice size. Balanced head with soft expression. Correct lay of shoulder and return of upper arm complete with infill of chest. Good underline with enough shape to topline and nice length of loin into smooth curvy croup and well angulated rear. True coming and going, just losing his shape slightly moving in profile.
3. Leathart’s Ringmore Dalrymple.
Puppy Bitch (12,3) Two lovely puppies headed this large class and separating them was not an easy task. Both great for size and both feminine, in the future they could very easily swap places. Overall, I found 1 had more infill of chest and depth, giving a more definite tuck up and a slightly more curvaceous outline.
1. Rees & Jones’ Kierpark Love Me Do. Overall a more shapely bitch. Long low front action with good drive from the rear moving in profile, holding her shape well on the move. BPB.
2. Courtney’s Loroli Stoned In Love with Courtbirch. A lovely bitch that pushed the winner hard. Lovely shape to topline, maintained on the move and moves true coming and going.
3. Turnbull’s Gwenny Dream Diva at Turnstone.
Junior Bitch (2,0)
1. Wallace’s Wolfcastle Sky Of Jules for Courtbirch. An attractive pale fawn brindle and white trim. Overall a nice frame with balanced angulation fore and aft. A little raw through the body, but forgivable for a puppy. When settled moves soundly coming and going with nice shape in profile.
2. Gallie’s Citycroft Shape Of You via Erbys. Pale fawn brindle, nice for size and feminine. Pleasing head and expression with good lay back of shoulder. Good return of upper arm and spring to pastern. Well angulated rear with good muscle. Moves well, just loses some of her curves on the move.
Post Graduate Bitch (7,4)
1. Hoskins’ Shelsue Jingling Jennie. Fawn bitch of nice size and correct proportions. Good head and length of neck. Moderate in front and rear angulation. Her front movement won her this class.
2. Leathart’s Ringmore Iona. A petite fawn bitch, finer through than the winner of this class. Nice head and neck with shapely top and underline which she kept moving. Would have liked more angulation in front.
3. Perkins’ Kierpark Just A Song at Zeglynn JW.
Limit Bitch (6,1)
1. Trouton’s Citycroft Grace Kelly of Runnel JW. This fawn and white trim bitch is a picture stacked, feminine with excellent size, proportions and balance. Nice head with good strength to underjaw. Shapely throughout the body with graceful curves leading into moderate hindquarters. Keeps her great shape on the move, but could be cleaner coming towards.
2. Reed & Pace’s Dejare Dash Of Hope JW. Fawn parti bitch, built on a slightly longer frame than my winner. Nice head and expression. Well developed through the body with good shape to topline and underline. Moves well in profile keeping her shape. Could be more accurate coming and going.
3. Perkins’ Southgrove Kiss From A Rose at Zeglynn (Imp Nld).
Open Bitch (6,1)
1. Rees & Jones’ Kierpark Dancing Queen. An elegant pale brindle bitch of nice size and very feminine. Excellent head on a long strong neck. Great angulation in front, elbows tucked well beneath her with good pasterns and feet. Good depth and front infill of chest, curvy definite tuck up. Her hindquarters compliment her front, well angulated with good length and width to thighs and not overdone in muscle. Moves true, with a low effortless stride. BB & BOS.
2. Snelgrove’s Palmik Carousel for Huntinghill JW. I truly got to appreciate this bitch when I got my hands on her, she is a quality bitch in great condition. Nice head with long elegantly arched neck. Curvy topline, perhaps too much depth of chest. Balanced front and hind angulation, and she uses these well on the move. Low easy stride, moving true coming and going and keeping her graceful topline well. RBB.
3. Whitmore’s Whitleara Truly Scrumpy.
