Breed: Whippet, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, Standard Smooth Haired Dachshund

Carluke & District Canine Society 21/12/2024

Many thanks to the Committee of Carluke & District for the invite to judge a variety of hound breeds. Many thanks also to my Steward Hazel for her prompt running of the ring. I was particularly impressed with quality throughout most of the breeds I judged, and was delighted to see a few of the BOB’s and BPIB’s I had awarded go onto win puppy group and hound group places, and ultimately Best In Show (Saluki).

Whippet:

Graduate (14,4) Unfortunately due to no puppy class I found this class was a mixture of immature and (occasionally) misbehaving puppies and mature well-schooled adults, and I found this influenced a lot of my decisions.

1. Salkeld & Graham’s Dalerafenn Follow A Dream. I am familiar with this bitch, having recently judged her and not a lot has changed. She has a real quality about her, is well balanced and of correct proportions. She caught my eye in this class a few times stacked and moving for her typical shape. She stands naturally over good ground and her free and easy movement.

2. Brook’s Collooney For Your Eyes Only JW. An elegant male, different in type to 1 and still has some maturing to do. Very attractive head, long clean neck into well laid shoulders. Excellent front construction and this was evident on the move. So very sound away and back, although sometimes a little unsettled which can alter his shape and stride.

3. Hutchinson’s Zenobia Just An Illusion with Sweetaurora.

4. Place & Halliday’s Aarminias Pillow Talk. BPIB & HPG1.

Limit (8,4)

1. Parkinson’s Groomsville Hologem Heavens Dream. Another bitch I am familiar with having awarded BOB previously in good company. A quality brindle bitch, excellent for size and without any exaggeration was a standout in this class. She is mature, and at one with her handler, covering ground effortlessly in profile and keeping her typical shape throughout.

2. Burton’s Ballenbreich Harris JW. A curvy male, with a very attractive head and expression set on long muscular neck. Good depth of chest and tuck up giving graceful shape to underline. Great angulation and strength to hindquarters. Moved well in profile with low front reach. Would have just liked him to be more masculine.

3. Arnold’s Ballenbreich Eorsa.

Open (5,1)

1. Hunter’s Ch Collooney Was Meant To Be at Sulahmarah. This masculine brindle dog caught my eye from the initial go around. He is balanced and of excellent proportions and had a real quality about him. Excellent head, strong underjaw and soft expression. Excellent front construction, well laid shoulders and elbows sat correctly beneath the brisket and slight spring to pastern. Curvy through the body with good spring of rib and curves above and below. Stifles well bent and muscled with low set hocks. Was foot perfect moving, true coming and going and had a purposeful stride in profile, which no one could match today. BOB & HG2.

2. Finch’s Starceylon Queen Of Dorne and Zenobia. This elegant feminine bitch is great for size and balance and has a lovely curvy outline. Attractive head, correctly set ears and long strong neck. Great front construction, with depth and fill of chest. Perhaps a fraction longer through the loin than I would prefer, but maintains her shape. Rear quarters to match her excellent front. Moves true coming and going and has an effortless profile action, just not quite able to match the profile movement of 1. RBOB.

3. Beattie-Nash’s Railfield Rainstorm.

Rhodesian Ridgeback:

Graduate (5,1)

1. Shaw’s Negasi Goldberry. Slightly longer cast throughout than some of the others in this class. Caught my eye on the initial go around with her free easy gait. Long clean neck leading into excellent front construction. Could strengthen up in the rear but won this class for her overall shape and purposeful profile movement.

2. Mullholldan & Cunningham’s Walamadengie Heart Throb. 1.5 year old male, of a different type to the winner of this class, stronger head than 1 and more compact throughout. Preferred the hindquarters on this dog which was well muscled and he moved straight going away, but was not able to match the movement and shape of the winner in profile.

3. Jolly’s Priorpark William Wallace for Clanbruachan.

Limit (2)

1. Ritchie’s Jimanns Hell On Heels. This bitch really appealed for her size, balance and proportions. Attractive head, long clean neck. Great front construction, combined with her great rear quarters she moved around the ring with reach and drive. Good depth and spring of rib but could be a little more shapely over the loin.

2. Reid & Muir’s Saadani Eye Of The Storm. Nice for size and masculine, not quite as balanced in angulation as 1, but had great front reach and moved true coming and going.

Open (7,2)

1. Shaw’s Negasi Radagast JW. This dog caught my eye from the beginning of this class. Would have preferred slight more refinement in head. Great otherwise for balance and proportions. Well laid shoulder and front set well beneath him. Developed through the body with good spring and depth of chest, well muscled and slightly arched loin, and kept this shape at all times. Really used his hindquarters to drive around the ring and was excellent coming and going! BOB.

2. Willunat’s Gambia Sirius Canis Maior at Clauwill JW (Imp Pol). A feminine bitch, of different type to the winner. Lovely clean head and neck. Great front construction, well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm. Wouldn’t want any more angulation to rear quarters. Moved well but not able to drive through the rear as well as 1.

3. Scanlon’s Kinabulas All About The Base JW ShCEx OSW.

Saluki:

Post Graduate (1)

1. Phillip’s Luachmhar Jala. Tricolour bitch of nice size and proportions. Lovely head and gentle expression. Correct set and length of ears with good feathering. Well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm, could have some more front fill. Gentle rise over the loin and good cut up. Would prefer more width and strength to second thigh. Light lifting movement, but could be cleaner coming towards. RBOB.

Open (2)

1. Phillip’s Ch Luachmhar Jamilah ShCEx. A standout In this entry. A quality feminine bitch who is excellent for size, proportions and balance. Lovely head, dignified expression and correctly set feathered ears. Long well muscled neck leads nicely into well laid back shoulders. Has good spring of rib, depth of chest and front infill. Gives a graceful impression with her gently curved loin and tuck up. Textbook croup, tail set and hindquarters. All comes together as expected on the move. She has an effortless stride reaching and driving to cover ground well. Was thrilled to see her top a lovely Hound Group and ultimately win Best In Show! Congratulations. BOB, HG1 & BIS.

2. Simpson’s Zxylasahlaam Gea’rr VW. This cream dog had a nice overall silhouette stacked, he is moderate, with a deep chest and has a gentle rise over the loin. Moving he lacked drive from the rear and this spoilt his outline.

Smooth Haired Dachshund:

Post Graduate (2,1)

1. Balfour’s Clentry Steal The Limelight. This 6 month old red bitch is very much an immature puppy, but she has positive attributes to grow into. She is good for proportions, with good ground clearance. Pleasing head, and correctly set ears. Well laid shoulders and good depth and front infill of chest. Good front movement and held her topline in profile.

Open (6,3)

1. Balfour’s Clentry Mango Passion ShCEx. Red bitch with a clean feminine head and well set ears. Liked her overall proportions, with good ground clearance, could have more angulation fore and aft. An active mover.

2. Twaddle’s Cotherstone Hashtag Sasilay. A strong male, who had a more firm topline than 1, but would have preferred a more refined head and less length of loin to make him more balanced. He was an active mover but not as free and flowing as the winner.

3. Holburn’s Marvale Party Politics at Glenlion.
