Pontarddulais Open Show

26.08.2024

Many thanks to Gareth Thomas and his hard working committee for staging such a friendly and well run old fashioned dog section at this well established agricultural show. It was nice to be back in my hometown and to judge some excellent dogs. Thank you to Gareth Lawler my steward for a busy day.

Best In Show

This was a super line up for me to go over. BIS was the German Shepherd who caught my eye as soon as he came into the line up. This is a very moderate ‘middle of the road dog’ who is overall very sound and with nothing exaggerated. He has a very good head piece and good breath to his skull with correct high set ears of good size and which he uses well. Correct head proportions. Super length of neck into the excellent well laid shoulders. He is correct at the elbow and of good bone and feet. Ideal body proportions and a topline which conforms to the standard and is in no way exaggerated. Correct croup. Well set tail of correct length. Good hind quarters which he used on the move. In A1 condition. However, where this correct dog excels is in his gait, which is true and effortless. A super dog to go over, I loved him. I later found out he is the breed’s youngest champion; he is well deserving of his title. Reserve was my Labrador retriever bitch from my gundog group.

Best Puppy in Show

Another tightly fought competition of quality animals. BPIS went to the Curly Coat Retriever. I judged him in the gundog classes and made him best AVNSC puppy and Best AVNSC overall. This is a real, at least in my opinion, Champion in the making. Right for size and overall shape, he is already an upstanding male. Correct wedge shaped head and overall head proportions, lovely dark eye and neat small ears correctly set. Strong neck into good shoulders. Well ribbed with strong loin. Correct underline. Lovely tight feet. Already a super coat of tight harsh curls. So sound moving with lovely side gait. Loved him. Found out later he is owned by the GSD BIS owner. Clever breeders. RBPIS was the Siberian Husky. I had this bitch under me recently in a puppy stakes. I wrote at the time that she will do very well when she is more collected. Today she was just that. In super condition and coat she moved so well. This bitch is a very nice Siberian. Correct head and ear. Good eye. Overall, her proportions are correct, and she has enough leg and is of correct weight. Looked like she could do a day in the snow. I must mention the Cairn that didn’t make the final two as is quite lovely, and I am sure will do well.

Best Veteran In Show

Ch Bwthyn Headliner JW ShCM ShCEx. Welsh Corgi (Cardigan) RBVIS. Brindle dog who immediately appealed for his substance and overall length and proportions. Very typical in head with decent width to his skull. Good large ears set apart correctly. Correct strong muzzle of correct length. Lovely bone. Typical front assembly. Good depth of brisket. Well sprung. Lovely topline which despite his age he maintained on the move. Super tail. Moved soundly and like a young dog. In A1 muscular condition and good jacket.RBVIS Trixhund Pick Pocket ESS and winner of AV Veteran.

Terriers

Cairn Terrier

What a lovely entry of Cairns. Such quality. Was delighted with the entry here.

Limit.1 Tycadno Winter Star. What a lovely prospect this young lady is. I thought her quite enchanting. Very nicely headed with very typical expression. Decent width of skull. Correct stop. Nicely indented between the eyes as the standard calls for. Nice small ear. Good depth of chest. Well Sprung. Correct top line. Has a typical front assembly and forefoot. Correct tail set. In excellent harsh jacket. Moved very well indeed good drive from behind. Animated on the move. I really like this bitch and felt that she is one who could with fair play gain her crown. 2. Nosnibor Double or Quits. Another very nice typical terrier. Again, much to like here and quality throughout. Not quite the breadth of skull and overall expression as the first placed dog. Good front assembly excellent neck and shoulder. Well Sprung. In the best of jackets. Super tail which is well carried on the move. Drives well from behind. Could be a little more positive in front if being critical.

Open. 1. Tycadno Magic Man. I thought this young dog quite smart. He is well made throughout. He has a very typical expression. Beautiful head with good eye and ear. Lovely made through the forehand. His coat is of excellent texture. He has a good spring of rib and is well ribbed back. Good short loin. Enough angulation behind. Moved very well.2. Ch Tycadno Tom Foolery. Not belittled by being placed second as this is another Cairn of quality. His overall size and shape is ideal. Well-made throughout. In excellent super jacket. Lovely bone and feet. Just on the day preferred the overall expression of the first placed dog. An excellent mover. I note from the same Kennel. 3. Nosnibor Double or Quits.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Junior. 1. Ellcahnsha The Devil In Me at Tondoo. A very nice dog bit aptly named. He was rather unruly, and his handler didn’t help the situation today. Nevertheless, I thought him the best in the class and when able to assess his movement, it was very accurate. He has a very good head and expression. Good breadth of skull and well-developed cheek. Nice, neat ear and dark eye. Good depth of brisket and well ribbed. Correct tail. Better free stood than stacked. 2. Tondoo Miss Moonshine. Typey young black bitch. Not quite as mature as 1 at this stage. Good head and expression. Another with a good eye. Good neck and shoulder. Needs to drop into herself. Good bone and feet. In good condition. Moved well. 3. Ringablok Lady in Black.

Limit. 1. Maynestaff Smooth Criminal. Won this class due to a super head piece with a good broad skull, short head and well developed cheek. Nice dark eye. Nicely made through but wouldn’t want any more of him. Well-muscled and well angulated hindquarters. Correct tail which is low set. Moved well. 2. Auchdaran Kiss Full of Fire. Nice bitch with lots to like about her. Nicely constructed through with good front and nice bone and feet. Well ribbed. Closely coupled. Moved well. Just preferred the overall head development of 1. 3.Skyestaff She Conquered JW

Open 1. Good class. Elhasatff Dark Knight. Young black dog. Liked him for his overall, type, shape and substance. Super head and expression. Good neck and shoulder. Good breadth in front and well-developed brisket. Correct topline and well ribbed. Nice muscular well angulated hindquarters. Well let down hocks. Moved soundly. In good hard condition. 2.Georgie Poergie Pops at Teshley staf JW. Quality red and white Another with a good overall shape and good substance without being course. Pleasing head and expression. Good neck and shoulder. Decent width in front and with good bone. Just prefer him a little less down on front pastern. Good topline and correct tail set. Closely coupled and well muscled rear. Moved ok. Just preferred the overall expression on Dark Knight. 3. Skyestaff Winter Soldier JW.

Hounds

Whippets

This was a super entry in terms of quantity but also quality.

Puppy 1. Ohoka Tope Model At Hengilfach. Cream bitch of quality. I wouldn’t want her any bigger but other than that she presents a lovely outline. Her silhouette is very clean and she is not exaggerated in anyway. Pleasing head and eye. Good neck and shoulder. Good depth of chest which is of adequate width. Nicely angulated at the rear moved very well. 2. Zeglynn Christmas Present. Dark fawn of quality. Not as confident as the first placed dog. Nevertheless, could not ignore his very typical outline. Nicely angulated rear and not over angulated anyway. Strong loin. Well muscled hind quarters. Moved very well although does need to settle a little in the front. With a little bit of confidence and maturity should do well. 3. Zeglynn Winter Pimm’s

Junior. 1 Silkridge Rapture with Zeglynn. Brindle and white. Nice for size. Pleasing head and eye. Good neck and shoulder. For me just falls away a fraction at the croup which detracts from the overall outline and is a fraction over angulated at the rear. However very good in bone and front construction. Nice feet. Moved very well.

Limit.1. Royal Tudor Storm Minime At Willingwisp. Brindle bitch who I wouldn’t want any larger. Nevertheless, very typical and has a lovely overall outline which caught my eye. Pleasing head. Lovely length of neck into well-placed shoulders. Correct length of upper arm. Good bone and well let down chest. Well ribbed. Needs to settle a little in front. Good drive from the rear. Nice in profile. Overall, I thought this was a very nice whippet bitch and I was very pleased toward her BOB. 2. Bodlon Rumour Has It. Good for size. Another who is very typical. For me did not have the top line of the 1st to place dog. Lovely rear. Well-muscled. In good hard condition. Moved very well. 3. Wolfcastle Dream Easy

Open. 1. Layways Now and Forever Bodlon. Veteran who immediately appealed for overall type, size, and overall balance. Presented just the outline that I was looking for. Not overdone in any way and in no way exaggerated. This bitch really excelled on the move where she has a beautiful side gait. Correct fore and aft. In A1 condition. I thought her quite lovely.2. Aus Ch Dachlah Its Only Make Believe at Willingwisp. A cream and white of super quality. This bitch pushed the veteran bitch very hard. It was very close between these two excellent specimens. I just felt that only make believe fell off a fraction at the croup. Very good on the move. I liked her very much.3. Kidaruka A Mothers Prayer

Dachshund (Long-Haired)

Junior 1. Trixhund One Queen. Black and tan. Lovely overall shape. Very much liked her head and expression. Good long muscular neck into well placed shoulders. Correct front assembly. Good level top line. Nice short loin. Has good overall ground clearance. Very well boned with good feet. Well ripped back. Hindquarters are well angulated. I thought her quite nice. Annexed best of breed over her kennel mate.

Open 1. Trixhund Ten from Len. Many of the attributes of One Queen also apply here. However, I felt that he didn’t have the length of head of the Junior bitch and also, I felt, and he was a little longer in loin. Good ground clearance. Such a well-developed keel. Topline is level. Hindquarters are not overdone and are muscular. Would prefer him to carry his tail a little lower on the move. Moved well with drive.

Dachshund (miniature Smooth -haired)

Junior. 1 Beachdax Girl of My Dreams. Brindle bitch. Quality young bitch. Pleasing head and expression. Correct ear set and size. Super keel. Well ribbed. Correct overall length. Short in line. Nice rear angulation. Moved well despite the long grass. Reserve Best of breed.

Open 1. Beachdax Sweet Melody JW. From the same Kennel as the junior winner. Quality red Bitch, who impressed for her overall outline and balance. Pleasing head and expression. Good neck into very well-placed shoulders. Well boned. Good feet. Has good ground clearance. Of correct overall length. Good level to topline and good tail set. Tail well carried. Moved okay. 2. Gellijam Midnight Lady of Mabeldax. Black and tan. Good head of correct proportions. Correct shaped eye. Good for overall size and well balanced. Not quite the hind quarters of the first placed bitch. Preferred the overall length of 1. Moved ok. 3. Mabeldax Festive Wish

Dachshund (miniature Wire-haired)

Open. Cardaxians Bambam Baby. Smart mini wire. However quite young and needs time. Head of correct proportions. Ears are well set, of correct shape and length. Would prefer however a less round eye to complete the expression. Good bone and feet. Overall is well balanced. Needs to firm up behind. Not in the best jacket today but enough to be sure that he does have a harsh coat. Will look better when in full coat. Moved okay but will do better when he has strengthened in the hind quarters.

Won here on overall type with a quality head and expression. Well made through and a super mover. 2. Chihngra Peraly Button. A lovely cream with many attributes. Beautiful head and expression. Lovely eye and ears. Unfortunately needs to carry her tail higher on the move, which detracted from the overall impression on the move. 3. Tyssul Coalman

Chihuahua (Smooth Coat)

Open.1 Chihngra Artful Dodger. Alone today bit not disgraced. Lovely headed S/C. Nicely rounded skull with lovely large eye and large well-placed ears. Nice length of neck into pleasing shoulder placement. Correct topline and good tail set. Very well carried tail. Short coupled. Very good mover.

Well made through and correct texture to her desired hairless skin.
