Ripon & District Canine Society

Ripon and District Canine Society - Open show 02/06/24 – Spaniel (English Springer), Lagotto Romagnolo, Pointer, Spanish Water Dog, Weimaraner, Spaniel (Irish Water), Retriever (Flat Coated), Bracco Italiano, English Setter and Irish Setter. As always, my first thanks must go to the committee for asking me to judge at their show. It is very much appreciated. The warm welcome from Nicola, Caroline and rest of the team was exemplary, with great catering to match. Thank you also to my stewards on the day, Patsy and Ann. Your efforts made my life very easy. However, major thanks must go to those exhibitors who came under me, on a very hot day. A few had some torrid times leading up to the show, therefore, making your appearance all the nicer for me. Many thanks to you all. The standard of dogs today was very high in many of the classes, with some super exhibits giving me a real headache for placement. I’m sure this was emulated for the Group Judge with several exhibits in the short list and then winning group placements. Well-done to all. Spaniel (English Springer), Class: 5 - Puppy (0) Class: 6 - Junior (1,0): 1. 20 – Calvert’s CALVDALE WITH RESPECT- Although stood alone, this dog that is little over 13 months, did a lot to impress and fitted the breed standard so well in many respects. Although not finished, well balanced for one so young. Appealing and well-constructed male head showing medium length and good fluting between hazel, almond shaped eyes, with excellent chiselling to zygomatic arch. Flatness to cheeks allowed for the culmination in a lovely, soft expression. Well developed in nose. Excellent length and placement to ears. Strong in slightly arched neck, that flowed effortlessly into well laid-back shoulders. Excellent bone seen throughout that was clear in front pasterns. Good depth to chest and spring to ribs. Well off for muscle throughout, which was obvious over loin. Correct topline and croup placement. Rear angulation matched that of the front well. great width to thigh. Very promising in the stack, which delivered on the move, showing sound footfall in all aspects. Also showed characteristic front action with reach and drive obvious from rear. Presented in lovely rich liver and white coat. I was spoilt with this as my first to judge on the day. I’m sure he will go far. BOB. Class: 7 – Postgraduate (1,1): Class: 8 – Open (3,2): 1. 21 – Casey’s TIGERROCK STRIKE A POSE – Bitch of some 7 years of age. Greater proportion of darker coat colour than that of 1st, but still so rich and well presented in liver and white. From the off, compact in appearance. Very pretty in head that was so soulful in expression, made all the more so from dark eye. excellent workings, framed with brow of good prominence. Good width to skull. Ears of correct length and set on same plane as eye. Good length to neck. depth seen to chest, well off for bone throughout. Very strong in loin, personally would like to have a little less coverage. Merry and active on the move showing drive from rear on the up and back. Good footfall on the around. BOB - Calvert’s CALVDALE WITH RESPECT (from Junior) Lagotto Romagnolo, Class: 9 – Postgraduate (3,0): 1. 26 – Bell’s IL GRANAIO DEI MALATESTA VALERIA VALEZ OF PENDLEBRIER (IMP IT) – just shy of 1-year-old bitch. A medium built young girl, that was obviously sturdy, from the stack. Loved her expression and cheekiness, on a nicely broad head of good proportions, showing presence of stop, and lovely raised brows. Good shape and colour to eye, that was well balanced to that of darker coat. complementary pigmentation seen to nose and around eye. Correct dentition and bite. Generous size to the ears and their position. Muscular neck into well-constructed front, showing appropriate angulation. compact in body proportions, but strength to wide loin. Solid topline on the move. Good balance to front and aft construction. This was evident on the move, as moved best in class, showing plenty of drive. BP. 2. 28 – Wilson’s EMMROCHE DANCER OF SIKAMA – A 4-year-old bitch that was unlucky to come up against winner of class. A lot to like about her. Two-toned girl with an appealing feminine head and alert expression. Strong in short neck construction and muscle. Straight and sturdy in forearms. Strong over body, with retention of super topline. Excellent in width to rear and thigh, showing correct tail-set also. Well-muscled throughout. Super woolly coat in lovely texture. Movement was not as strong in the drive as that of 1st, dropping her to 2nd. Footfall on the around was correct. 3. 27- Udale’s GAMEGLOW BELIEVE IN ME. Class: 10 – Open (2,0): 1. 24 - Bell’s IL GRANAIO DEI MALATESTA DICK DASTARDLY OF PENDLEBRIER (IMP IT) – 17-month dog, that was presented in full brown, woolly coat. Very lovely boy that also did well in the group. Sound in construction and on the move, throughout. Loved the head which was good width across zygomatic arch and that flattened at occiput. Very well-developed eyebrows. Large in nostrils. Lovely expression, that was made from large, ochre eye. Muscular and powerful in neck, that emulated in seamless lines into well laid-back shoulders, equal in length to upper arm. Excellent front construction and angulation, that was well mirrored in rear. Compat and strong over body, with well sprung ribs. Strength to loin was obvious, especially with its solid retention on the move. Really liked the width to upper and second thigh. Lively on the move with great ground coverage. Topline didn’t waver and footfall was sound on the around. BOB. 2. 25 - Bell’s IL GRANAIO DEI MALATESTA THOMAS SHELBY MIOTESORO –11-month dog. Such a shame on this exhibit being so nervous when going over. Was informed this one has had a hard time to this point and so was first show. Has many good points which was clear when on the move, just needs a little time and patience, which I am sure will come from the exhibitors. Presented in brown and white coat, of tight curls. Gentle male expression. Solid in head construction. Short in neck, that was well muscled. Good front and rear angulation. well-muscled throughout. Gentle slope from withers to croup. Width to loin. Width to upper thigh. Moved beautifully. BOB - 24 - Bell’s IL GRANAIO DEI MALATESTA DICK DASTARDLY OF PENDLEBRIER (IMP IT) (from Open). BP - 26 – Bell’s IL GRANAIO DEI MALATESTA VALERIA VALEZ OF PENDLEBRIER (IMP IT) (from Postgraduate) Pointer Every class had lovely Pointers, with a few placements giving me a difficult choice. Very tight calls. A credit to the owners and standard of Pointers in this part of the world. Class: 11 – Graduate (3,1): 1. 30 - Anderson Rowell’s WILCHRIMANE SILENT SONNET AT DALEDANCER - nearly 1-year-old bitch, that I loved as soon as I saw her. Very striking in markings and outline. One of the best off for type of all Pointers. However, still needs maturing to reach full potential. Lovely in balance and elegant lines. Presented in black and white coat. Typical in medium breadth head construction and presence of that slight dish shape appearance. Nice workings under darkest of eye, very in keeping with predominantly black head. Correct in length and positioning of ears. Long in neck, showing arch. So very clean in flow into well angulated forequarters. Forelegs very firm and straight. Slight slope to pasterns. Proportionate in spring of rib. Lovely topline, with short couple and strong well-muscled loin. Well-angulated in rear. Was very good for age in movement and was very true on the up and back. Had good scope. Just needs to mature to improve her development. I’m sure she will come very well. Again, one to watch. BP. 2. 34 - Booth’s LUNDGARTH JUBILEE JW - 2-year-old bitch that was unlucky to come up against 1st. A lot to like from this predominantly white with orange coated girl. Good breadth to skull and good length to foreface. Would like a little more depth to provide more prominence to dish-faced appearance, but still visible. Pigmentation complementary to skin tone, in terms of nose and around eye. Again, bright eye of dark brown colour, but still complementary to coat, giving lovely expression. Leanness to slightly arched neck. Good length to well angled shoulder. Sinewy in straight front legs. Appealing rear angulation. Would like to see a little more slope to topline. Well-muscled throughout. On the move, up and back, very much appealing. Went well. Class: 12 – Postgraduate (3,1): 1. 40 – Turton’s TANGLEBROOK SOLITAIRE – 21-month bitch that was presented in white and orange coat. Dark rims that accentuate her dark-brown eye, giving a lovely soft expression, but again, one I would like to see a little more dish-shape to face, to make her head a little more typey. Still a lovely young girl, with excellent reach of neck and lay-back of shoulders. Very lean, clean lines and well-muscled throughout. Definitely built for speed. Well off for strong bone and good balanced between fore and aft angulation. Good slope to croup and tail set. Moved best in class with good drive and executed the around very well, enabling her to win the class. Also showed her maturity in body. 2. 42 – Udale’s DOWBIGGINS HEIDI - 3.5-year-old bitch not quite as robust as 1st. Well-presented in black and white coat. Again, a bitch that had a lovely eye-catching expression, and good head proportions, requiring a little more concave muzzle. Good reach to neck that flowed well into well angled shoulders. Thoracic cavity down to elbow and a spring to rib that was in balance with rest of dog. Good strength to loin. Personally, would like a little more rear angulation and width to the upper and 2nd thigh to really bring her on. Reached out well on the move and showed clean pads, from width to rear. Didn’t have the edge over 1st, but still covered the ground well. Class: 13 – Open (6,1): A very difficult class to judge because of high standards of dogs. Thank you for the headache. 1. 38 - Mason’s MORGAN VAN FREEBREEZE (IMP NLD) – 5.5year old bitch that was absolutely brilliant for muscle. Very much a worked dog and it certainly showed from the muscle and tone. A credit to owner. She instantly caught your eye because of this. She won a good class on overall balance, great movement, and completeness. More typey in head, but still could be a little more dish-shape in face again. However, rest of head so very balanced in proportions and in balance with body. Beautiful expression from very dark brown, kind eye, bordered with black pigmentation, that catches the eye. Ears set on well, hanging neatly next to neck of appealing length. This rolled seamlessly into shoulders that were very well laid-back and of good proportions. Strength seen to sinewy, straight legs. Good width to front, and depth to chest down to elbow. Very well sprung ribs with good tuck-up. Short coupled with strong slightly arched loin. Good shape to croup and tail carriage. Good width to rear quarters, as well as to upper and 2nd thigh. She used this well on the move, where she drove out well and with reach also. Although many moved so well in the class, she didn’t faulter at all. So well-muscled and balanced. BOB. 2. 33 – Booth’s LUNDGARTH EVEREST JW – nearly 3-year-old bitch that pushed 1st all the way. Another in orange and white coat, she showed excellent balance and movement, making it difficult to put her 2nd. A lovely expression from dark eye, contrasting the coat well, but still keeping it kind. Excellent amount of workings below eye. Good end to muzzle and yet again, proportions to head. Correct in ear placement and length to muscular neck. Great angulation to front that was well balanced with rear. Straight to forelegs, with slightly sloping pasterns. Ribs sprung well in proportion to rest of body. Down at elbow. Strength seen to loin, with nicely tapering croup. All leading to a good topline. Would personally have liked a little more width to upper and 2nd thigh. However, was still very good on the move with rear and correct footfall. Not quite having the ring presence of 1st, but none the less, lovely. 3. 29 – Anderson Rowell’s RAIGMORELIMELIGHT AT DALEDANCER. BOB - 38 - Mason’s MORGAN VAN FREEBREEZE (IMP NLD) (from Open) BP - 30 - Anderson Rowell’s WILCHRIMANE SILENT SONNET AT DALEDANCER (from graduate) Spanish Water Dog, Class: 14 – Postgraduate (3,1): 1. 44 - Glaysher’s RAINETHYME EVER SO SPECIAL – 13-month bitch who I thought was so complete, especially for age. Presented in a predominantly brown with white, woolly, curled coat. Very typical in a robust, feminine appearance and very well balanced. Flat in skull that was well proportioned to skull length. Broad in brown nose. Lovely brown eye, with great cheeky expression. Correct in ear, V-shape and placement. Well-muscled in short neck that was set into shoulders of good angulation and proportions. Elbows set close on strong bone, but still retaining style. Very well ribbed and depth to chest clearly visible. Typical in loin for breed. Well-off for muscles, for age, in sound rear construction. Very brisk in movement, and had good reach. Got better as she got going and particularly nicely in the group, where she did very well. One to watch. BOB. 2. 43 – Darwesh’s CHANDERHILL SMART EDITION FOR ELIZARD – The young hander did a super job with this 7-month boy, who was so obedient. Another who was presented in predominantly brown, with white coat, but slightly looser curls than 1st. Lovely proportions for such a young man, and really showed robustness. Very well balanced. Moved with a lovely, definitive strut, befitting of him. Eye colour hazel, complementary to that of coat. Well off for head construction, with flat skull and slight stop. Neck nice and short with well angulated shoulders. Excellent in spring of rib, with good depth to chest. Well-angulated behind, but still needs his good development to continue. Good drive on the move, but still showing puppy movement that dropped him into 2nd. Another lovely little prospect, that I am sure will bloom with good young handler. Again, did so well in the puppy group. BP. Class: 15 – Open (1,1) BOB - 44 - Glaysher’s RAINETHYME EVER SO SPECIAL (from Postgraduate) BP - 43 – Darwesh’s CHANDERHILL SMART EDITION FOR ELIZARD (from Postgraduate) Weimaraner Again, two lovely classes of dogs which gave me difficult decisions to make. In some cases, splitting hairs. Class: 16 – Postgraduate (4,0): 1. 52 – Hostler’s THEONDALE MARGOT – bitch of 13 some months, but looked so mature. Had a look of power and scope in the stack and on the move. Very balanced in head, showing similarity to proportion in muzzle to skull. Large nose of light grey. Protruberance to occiput very noticeable. Moderate stop, with medium round eye, and appealing chiselling. Correct in ear length and position. Clean lines from moderate length neck into well laidback shoulders. Strong in bone throughout. Correct in body length proportion, with excellent topline, with ribs showing good spring. Excellent rear angulation that was not overdone, stifles well turned down. Well-muscled throughout. Effortlessly covered the ground, with no movement of topline. Great action from behind on the up and back. Loved the colour of coat. 2. 49 – Balmer’s TRAPALEBA DIOR – 9-month bitch that is attractive in appearance. A little smaller in comparison to 1st, but still well within requirements. Again, another that has a lot to like and unlucky to come up against a competitor that has 4 months more experience and maturity. A shade different in colour, which was again appealing. In the stack again showing power and good balance. Feminine in head with a lovely expression, given rise for eye shape and colour, that complemented coat colour. Moderate reach of neck. Would prefer a little more width to chest. Angulation to front and aft complementary, that was all encased in good muscling. Well sprung ribs. Great topline. A few moments on the move a little raw, that dropped her to 2nd, but looked great for age. Will develop well, in my opinion. BP. 3. 48 - Balmer’s TRAPALEBA CARRERA Class: 17 – Open (4,0): 1. 50 – Dobbs’s KALIMOR SUMMA LOVE JW – 2.5-year-old bitch that was presented in a slightly darker grey coat, but loved her for her overall construction and movement. Very impressive in the stack. Beautiful in head, from kind expression. Lovely proportions from muzzle to skull. Good rise to stop without being excessive. Good prominence to median line. Good depth to workings below eye. Ears framing the head well, also of correct length, just before end of nose. Loved the length of neck, that was clean, but nicely muscled. This seamlessly flowed into shoulders of lovely angulation and proportions. Excellent width to chest and depth. Well sprung ribs and extending well back. Firm, strong loin. Adequate tuck up. Nice angulation to croup. Good width to rear quarters and thigh. Excelled on the move in all departments. Good for drive, reach and head carriage. Well off for muscle. BOB. 2. 53 - Maskell, Rayner & Maskell’s ENJAGER HARMONY WITH BROWNBANK JW – 2.5-year-old bitch that definitely lived up to the nick name from her light colour grey and light blue/grey eyes. Therefore, lovely for type in the stack. A little more compact than that of 1st but still of correct proportions. Nice proportions to head construction and once again another with a lovely expression. Gentle rise to stop, good occipital protuberance. Good reach to neck into shoulders that were well muscled. Good width to chest and brisket down to elbow. Spring to ribs seen and excellent strength to short loin. Good width behind, but would like a little more width to thigh. Didn’t have the reach of 1st on the move, but from her muscular condition, moved and drove well and true. 3. 54 – Murray’s MABANIKA JUST GOOD FRIENDS. BOB - 50 – Dobbs’s KALIMOR SUMMA LOVE JW (from Open) BP - 49 – Balmer’s TRAPALEBA DIOR (from Postgraduate) Spaniel (Irish Water) Class: 18 – Open (0) Retriever (Flat Coated) Class: 19 – Postgraduate (3,2): 1. 59 – Walker & Roberts’s GLOI DUBH KRISTOFER ROBIN JW – 2.5-year-old dog that had a lot to like. Very much a dog in the stack. Presented in a very rich, black coat of appropriate quantity. Certainly powerful and racy in appearance. Head long showing characteristic slight stop on a strong male head. Really lovely. Dark brown in medium eye, well positioned in skull. Good length, to strong neck. Strong proportions to body seen throughout, making him appear a robust male. Width to chest. Strong in well-angled shoulders. Well off for bone. Lovely spring to ribs and topline. Muscular loin of short couple, which held very well on the move. Rear angulation moderate. Excellent width behind and to thigh, even more highlighted, on the move. Solid topline. Again, another dog that moved very well in the class, with excellent clean heels and free flowing gate in all directions. BOB. Class: 20 – Open (1,0): 2. 57 - Walker & Roberts’s FUNSTUFF IN AND OUT AT GLOI (IMP) – 5-year-old bitch, who was again presented in a rich, plentiful, black coat. Very feminine in head appearance, showing leanness to skull, whilst retaining true characteristics, being nicely moulded. Rich hazel in eye. Correct in ear placement and shape. Neck free of throatiness with reasonable reach. Good length to scapula. Forelegs straight. Well-off for spring of rib. Short loin. Excellent in width to upper thigh that was well muscled and showing good angulation. A little stocky over loin for me. Neat in feet. On the move, went with characteristic tail carriage and verve. Drove out well on the up and back. BOB - 59 – Walker & Roberts’s GLOI DUBH KRISTOFER ROBIN JW (from Postgraduate) Bracco Italiano Class: 21- Open (6,3): A very close call in this class again. Lovely exhibits, with much to like from all. 1. 66 – Sanderson’s WHITGUN U’CAN’T TOUCH THIS AT WALWAL JW – 2-year-old bitch, that I very much liked for overall balance and movement. Lighter in colour, shown in amber and speckled white. Lovely working to under eye formed from narrowness at zygomatic arch. Slight arch seen to muzzle. Good balance to head and muzzle proportions. Softest, doe-like expression, from oval eyes that had a colour in keeping to that of the coat. correct ear length of lovely texture, set on well. Strength seen to neck. Very well balanced in shoulder angulation in comparison to rear quarters. Excellent width to rear and across thigh. Slightly off square in overall construction, with body slightly longer than height. Well off for muscle throughout, especially over croup. Didn’t faulter in any department on the move and had a great untiring action with drive as she quartered the ground. BOB. 2. 64 – Sanderson’s OWLSPOINT TROUBLE AGAIN JW SHCEX OSW – 6-year-old male that is strong and powerful in appearance. Shown in excellent, rich chestnut and speckled white coat. Strong in male head with characteristic arch to muzzle. Lovely chiselling beneath eye. medial furrow obvious. Good depth to muzzle. Once again, a lovely expression, given from dark eye. Ears set level with eye, of correct length. Muscular neck. very well sprung ribs and depth to thoracic cavity. Good width to chest. Well-muscled across a strong loin. Very strong in muscular, male body. Head carried regally on the move, but didn’t quite have the drive of that of first. 3. 68 – Warburton’s WITHAMFRIARY LUSH BLOSSOM AT HEBERHOUSE- very honourable mention. BOB - 66 – Sanderson’s WHITGUN U’CAN’T TOUCH THIS AT WALWAL JW (from Open) English Setter Class: 22 – Postgraduate (10,4): 1. 74 - Hughes’s MARIGLEN HERE TO ETERNITY – 10-month boy that was very well off for type. Still a little raw, but looks set to mature nicely. Stood in a light, blue belton coat. Long and lean masculine head, with a lovely dark eye that complemented his coat so well, giving this boy the classic English Setter look. Good square finish to muzzle, with black nose. Appealing amount of chiselling under eye, of oval shape. Ears set on low, neatly next to long, lean neck. Good construction and angulation to forequarters. Well off for bone. Proportionate in body length, with well sprung ribs. Strength to loin, giving rise to a flat topline. Good tail placement and croup length. Muscle coming very well in upper and second thigh. Well-angulated in rear. Tail did not stop lashing throughout. Didn’t put his best foot forward on the move in the challenge, knocking him off BOB. Was much better in the class, showing good drive and reach. Needs time to mature, but will be an interesting watch. Good luck. BP. 2. 76 – McDowell’s MOORBROOK MISS MARPLE AVEC BYEDALES – 2-year-old bitch that was draped in a very rich, dark blue belton coat. Smaller in stature than that of first, but very much appealing. Good planes to head, of good proportions and balance. Well-defined in stop. Clear occipital protuberance, to sound skull shape. Very soft expression of dark brown, oval eye, which was in keeping with coat. Clean through muscular neck, into shoulders that were complimentary in angulation to rear quarters. Well-boned throughout. Good depth to chest and plenty of spring to ribs. A little too solid over loin for me. Strong in width over loin. Good angulation to croup. Short in hock. Plenty of width to well-muscled upper and second thigh. Moved out with plenty of drive, but not as sound as that of 1st. 3. 75 – Kemp-Taylor’s QUENSHA’S STRAWBERRY SWING. Class: 23 – Open (4,2): 1. 70 – Dykes’s CALEYDENE CONNEXTION – 3-year-old bitch in full coat of orange belton. Very pleasant and in keeping for type. Very pretty in head, showing length and leanness, with a good stop, in keeping with body. Oval shape from ear to ear, with ample occipital protuberance. Loved the amount of working under dark eye giving a contrast to coat, which was very appealing indeed. Light in nose colour, in keeping with coat. Excellent reach of neck, and showing strength. Good angulation to shoulder, down at elbow. Well-ribbed, with strength to wide loin. Lovely slope to croup. Well-muscled throughout. Moved out with good drive from moderately wide thigh, but would like a little tightening up on footfall. Tail and head carriage excellent on the move also. BOB. 2. 82 – Taylor’s KANIETTER KOCOA – 3-year-old dog, of tricolour coat, that had the kindest disposition and only wanted to please handler. A dog that was larger in frame than that of other English on show. Very pleasing in head in strong dog shaped head, with a very soft and gentle expression. Lovely shape and size to eye that was sat on top of some good workings. Good length to ears and correct positioning. Excellent reach to neck. Well-boned throughout. Brisket down to elbow and strong in loin. Gentle drop to croup. Moved very merrily and so very friendly. Coat was presented very well and of lovely texture. BOB - 70 – Dykes’s CALEYDENE CONNEXTION (from Open) BP - 74 - Hughes’s MARIGLEN HERE TO ETERNITY (from Postgraduate) Irish Setter Class: 24 – Postgraduate (4,1): 1. 88 – McDowell & Stewart’s GWENDARIFF BACK OFF BABY – 5-year-old bitch, that I thought was very pretty indeed. Lovely refinement to feminine skull. Fairly square to front of jaw. Well-balanced in head construction, with correct proportions and good protuberance to occiput. Parallel planes. Excellent working to zygomatic arch, with gentle, but adequate stop. Correct ear placement. Good muscularity to moderately long neck of good reach. Seamless transition into well-constructed shoulders, set well back. good bone throughout. Good depth to chest and well sprung ribs. Gently sloping topline, with correct croup placement and width. Excellent in rear construction, with lovely width to upper and 2nd thigh. Correct tail carriage. Movement was good on the around and drove out very well. Personally, would prefer to see a little less weight, to push her on. Very nice girl. BOB. 2. 87 – Holehan’s LOGANRISH TIGER WARRIOR – nearly 1 year old dog that was very unlucky to come up against 1st, at this stage of his career. In the stack so imposing even at this age. Beautiful balance in construction between front and back. Nice in head balance, with great male expression. Dark in unshelled almond eye. Good length to ears of correct placement. Moderate in neck length of good muscling. Excellent in shoulder angulation and fine at point. Depth to chest and rather narrow in front. Lovely gently sloping topline and good tuck up. Lovely strength to well-muscled loin. Well placed croup of good length and width. Excellent in rear angulation, in balance with front. Not bad width to thigh, but will improve in time, I am sure. Neat in feet. Lovely rich coat, with ample quantity for age. Would personally like to see a little more robustness to ribs, but again convinced will come with age. Moved very well with width behind, straight in rear pasterns, drive, and correct footfall. One youngster I will watch out for in the future. Presented and handled beautifully. BP. 3. 86 – Holehan’s LOGANRISH TIGER LILLY PEARL Class: 25 – Open (1,1) BOB – 88 - McDowell & Stewart’s GWENDARIFF BACK OFF BABY (from Postgraduate) BP - 87 – Holehan’s LOGANRISH TIGER WARRIOR (from Postgraduate) Dr. Hefin Jones (Pencastan)
