Cheshire Agricultural Society

The Royal Cheshire County Show – Premier Open Show – 18th & 19th June 2024.

It was indeed a pleasure and honour to be invited to judge this premier open show, so well organised to every detail. Rings were spacious and hospitality both from the Committee and exhibitors was great. Special thanks to the stewards that attended to my rings, they made my task so much easier.

FIRST DAY:

DOGUE DE BORDEAUX

Puppy (2, 1a): 1st: Mrs J Gaughan’s Bobiso Miss Bianca (BP),6 month old bitch, still a baby, needs to settle down, femminine head good bone, correct front, first time in the ring for both dog and handler, handling must be improved, BP

Post Graduate (1): 1st: Mr P Turnbull’s Wendy Z Habaskeho Dvora at Biscay 19 month old bitch having a lovely head, good mouth, well placed ears, correct neck and shoulders, well ribbed, strong quarters, moved well. (Res BOB)

Limit (2,1): 1st: Mr P Turnbull’s Wessi Z Habanskeho Dvora at Biscay, 19 month old bitch, sister to previous class winner, preferred this one’s front and bone, gorgeous head, good mouth, strong chest with good depth, good ribs, excellent hindquarters which she used on her easy, sound movement. BEAPHAR U.K Ltd A/V NON-SPORTING PUPPY STAKES

1st: Miss T J Irving’s Welsh Corgi (Pembroke), Born to Be Your C’est La Vie at Twinan (Imp Hun), only a 6 month old baby but stood out in the lineup, lovely type with pleasing balance, loved his head qualities, with correct eye colour and ear placement, lovely front with good feet, good length of neck, well ribbed, excellent topline, good angulations on both front and back assemblies, moved well with powerful driving hind action.

2nd: Mr A & Miss R Lunn & Downes’s Poodle (Standard), Royaldeniz Superwolverine – 9 month old dog, with a nice head, good muzzle, good shoulder angulations, coreect front, firm topline, strong hindquarters, very good sound mover.

3rd: Unstoppable Alpiu Slenis to Jaxtzu (Imp Ltu), Shih Tzu; 4th: Arkadian Alfredo Ferrari, Bolognese; VHC: Sensha's Hot Coco at Affrhoda, Akita

ROSEWOOD A.V NON-SPORTING SPECIAL BEGINNERS STAKES

1st: Mrs L Scholes’s Dobermann, Iduex Eowyn, very smart bitch having a femminine head, correct eye and ear placement, lovely straight front with good feet, level topline, well angulated quarters, sound movement,

2nd: Ms S Taylor’s CKCS, Luvtayl Rave About – liked this boy, lovely type with a gorgeous head having all the right proportions, very well put together front and back assemblies, presented in good condition. Moved well.

3rd: Calareto All My Loving JW, Border Collie; 4th: Highashes Plan Bee JW, Welsh Corgi (Pembroke)

VHC: Royaldeniz Superwolverine, Poodle (Standard)

DAVID MOSS MEMORIAL A/V NON-SPORTING CHAMPION STAKES

1st: Mrs E A & Miss L Jay’s Bearded Collie, Ch Farmarens Drums of Spring at Talraz (Imp Swe), Simply loved his overall balance, giving a splendid picture of a sound dog. Excellent head with the correct proportions, dark eye, correct mouth, lovely expression. Good reach of neck, correctly angulated front and rear assemblies. Immaculately presented in excellent coat condition, so sound on the move having an easy ground covering movement with reach and drive which gave him the edge in this class.

2nd: Mrs C A Freshney’s Bullmastiff, Ch Hyerdunscar Renaissance for Bullenca – Caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring, Strong head with a lovely mask, dark eyes, good ear placicement, wide jaw with square muzzle, strong, straight front with correct feet, strong neck, excellent spring of rib, short coupled, level topline leading to a good tailset. Effortless movement with plenty of drive. So close to the top spot in this class.;

3rd: Ch Nikara Sweet Dreams for Kimeekasams, (Samoyed)

4th: Ch Cerisier Supreme of Strongzbeaux JW, (Dogue De Bordeaux)

VHC: Ch/ir/nl/int/dk/bl Ch Vandreem Imperial Kazhiya JW, (Samoyed)

SECOND DAY

GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER

Puppy (3): 1st: Z M Sielski’s Orchidstar Silver Lightnin – Stunning 12 month old bitch, very femminine throughout. This girl has an excellent profile with an excellent head & expression of good proportions, well set ears, Good length of neck into well placed shoulders and corresponding return of upper arm. Brisket of good width and depth reaching to elbows. Correct bone and excellent feet, excellent body & loin, held a good topline and underline both during set up & moving and a well set & carried tail, good strength in hindquarters used to cover the ground well and with ease. One to watch in the future. (BOB,BP);

2nd: Mrs. J A Shepherd’s Orchidstar Platinum Strike – preferred winner on overall conformation, front assembly and profile, not a bad example of the breed but surely needs to settle.

3rd: Tuptonsett Master Dexter

Junior (3): 1st: Mr E J & Mrs S Kania’s Pinseeker Lady Luck at Peakforest - young bitch of a nice type, feminine head & expression,liked her shoulder angulations, enough neck and good plenty bone, maybe needs to be a bit up on her feet, held her topline when moving, good coat and condition, moved & showed well;

2nd: Mr C & Mrs J West’s Ceilloch Luck Be A Lady lovely type, preferred shoulder angulations on winner, this one still just needs to tighten in front on the move but her overall type & quality are good, maybe a tad long for my liking;

3rd: Montalba Miss Aching

Graduate (4,2): 1st: Mrs Schoneville’s Orchidstar Themisto by Balvenie – Liver/white dog of good size, correct clean cut head proportions with good nasal bone, eye colour and ear placement, Neck clean, well laid shoulders, chest well developed and ribs well sprung. Good front assembly and standing on well boned straight legs and compact well padded feet;

2nd: Mrs V & Miss E Brown, larger sized dog, with a lovely head, correct front with plenty of bone and good feet, good chest and underline, good angulations front and back, moved well.

Limit (4,2): 1st: Mrs Z M Sielski’s Orchidstar Missing Link JW, loved her type, size and correct angulations, femminine head with very good proportions, good neck length, lovely straight front, enough chest depth and width, sound mover, A bit proud of her tail today;

2nd: Mrs J A Shepherd’s Orchidstar Full Speed Ahead – liked his type, masculine head, preferred front and movement of winner. Also needs to drop his tail on the move.

Open (4,1): 1st: Mrs Z M Sielski’s Sh Ch Orchidstar Bolts of Speed - Lovely type, an excellent example of the breed having a masculine head and expression, excellent neck & shoulders with a lovely front and bone and feet, strong correct topline and a well set tail. Correct coat and condition, strong hindquarters. This boy stands over plenty of ground the correct coat, a lovely type with a masculine head & expression, good neck & shoulders, strong correct topline & well set tail, strong hindquarters, he stands over plenty of ground, steady mover. Later learned he is the sire of the BOB puppy winner. (Res BOB);

2nd: Mrs V & Miss E Brown’s Montalba Mister Teatime – preferred head of winner, and had a tendency of knuckling over at times;

3rd: Balvenie Eye Candy JW

GERMAN WIREHAIRED POINTER:

Puppy (2,1): 1st: Mr G D & Mrs E & Miss A E & Mr S D Turnbull & Turnbull & Turnbull & Keene’s Glenquin The Colonel at Elagram - A super example of the breed. A mature looking puppy, but not overdone in any way. Lovely appealing head and expression, with dark eyes and correct ear set, good face furnishings, depth of chest and good angulation front and rear. Inner and outer coat is correct and he was shown in hard condition, moving round the ring with style. One to watch for future development. (Res BOB, BP)

Post Graduate: 1st: Mrs J A Shepherd’s Kimmax Klean Sweep – 7 yr old B, well balanced with femminine head, moved a bit close behind today.

Open (5,1): 1st: Mr G D, Mrs E & Miss A E Turnbull’s Kimmax Two Kan Play at Elagram – Loved this bitch, a real powerful hunting dog. Well balanced throughout with equal length of muzzle & skull with a gentle expression. Moderate length of neck which flows into well laid shoulders & her return of upper arm places her fore legs under her body. Good chest width and depth, correct height to length ratio with a firm level topline held on the move. She carries her well set tail correctly. Stands on well boned legs with tight feet. Excellent harsh coat with undercoat. Put down in well muscled condition, smooth effortless movement with an even stride covering the ground well. (BOB);

2nd: Mr P F & Mrs M Mccullough’s Kimmax Kiss Ma Blackside at Beechillawn – another good example of the breed, liked the type, lovely masculine head well set on neck of good length. dark eyes, good ears. Well laid shoulders, good depth of chest. firm level topline & correct tailset. Well sprung ribs which are carried well back. Good width of second thigh. Moved out well but I just prefered the overall movement of the winner.

3rd: Ir Sh Ch Beechillawn Raspberry Sorbet Cjw22 Cw22/23 Cen Ch Cen JW Cenw Jch

HUNGARIAN VIZSLA

Puppy (2,1): 1st: Ms C Gammon’s Glenbrows Reminiscent 8 month old b, femminine in head, would prefer more square muzzle, good neck and bone, needs to mature and fill in body. (BP)

Junior (7,2): 1st: Mr R Williams’ Bournehouse Romeo – Lovely type very masculine but nothing overdone, he has good head proortions, gentle expression and dark eye, he has the required forechest that so many are lacking, strong, slightly arched neck into correctly assembled front, well boned legs down to good feet, mature body with depth of chest and correct spring of rib, moderate angulation fore & aft which he uses to advantage with his effortless, driving movement shouting Vizsla all the way in body and movement. (BOB);

2nd: Mr D & Dr S Roberts’ Oakswarren Smouldering Hot – liked her head, neck and shoulders, would prefer to see more bone in this one. Moved well;

 3rd: Glenbrows Reminiscent.

Post Graduate (6,2): 1st: Mrs R Warner’s Nordicfield Desert Gold – Best one in this class, excelled in her femminine head, well bodied, good proportions , reachy clean neck, well ribbed back, moderate in angulation.Moved best;

2nd: Mr D J & Ms E M Hardcastle & Bradley’s Castledogley Firenze JW – needs to add substance in body, moved o.k.;

3rd: Bitcon Jackpot at Baratja

Open (5,1): 1st: Mr D J & Ms E M Hardcastle & Bradley’s Sh Ch Vizslanya Sziena JW ShCEx OSW – 6 yr old b, liked her type and lean and noble femminine head proportions, good neck and correct shoulder angulations, looked a bit down on pasterns today. Correct width and depth of chest, nice hind angulations, moved very well. (Res BOB);

2nd: Mrs R Warner’s Nordicfield Dawn Run – liked her head and neck, good shoulder angulations and decent front and bone, bit too racy in loin for my likings;

3rd: Nz Ch Brockville Ko Weaver Te Awa (Imp Nzl)

SPANIEL (CLUMBER)

Puppy (2): 1st: Mr D Tilston’s Maursett Menelaus – 10 month old D, preferred him on body and ribs, masculine head, having the correct proportions, correct bite, very good bone substance and a well sprung rib cage, strong loins and powerful hindquarters which he used well on the move. Was a bit proud of his tail on the move. (BP, Res BOB);

2nd: Miss E G Dronsfield’s Knockhalon Hocus Pocus – 8 month old bitch, had a better eye than 1 but then not as good in bone, and needs more spring of rib which I hope will come with age.

Open (2): 1st: Mr D Tilston’s Stonielea Toast - A sound example of the breed, having a good masculine head, clean eyes, scissor bite and correct reach of neck, leading to good layback of shoulders. Deep chest and ribs going well back, short over the loin with well bent stifles. Excellent muscle tone. Soundness in construction that results in a dog that is able to power around the ring with ease. A dog which you have to lay your hands on to truly appreciate. (BOB);

2nd: Mrs S J Harvey’s Gracedieu Finest Jewels – Good femminine head with ample body and bone. Moved ok.

BASENJI:

Puppy (1): 1st: Mrs S M Knowles’ Sarawana Dragon’s Conquest – 7 month old baby, very smart, sweet femminine head, good neck, she could perhaps be a little stronger through the pastern, good rib and topline, well constructed hind quarters, very well balanced throughout. moved well.

Post Graduate (1): 1st: Mrs S M Knowles’ Sarawana Dragonfire Rising – litter sister to previous class winner having a most beautiful head & exquisite eye. Superb neck, shoulder, front & feet, Good depth of chest, spring of rib & compact loin, her turn of stifle is good & her hocks well let down. Presented a lovely picture & moved out well with a free flowing stride. BP, Res BOB)

Open (3): 1st: Mrs E & Mr D Grayson & Cullen’s Bushwacker American Hustle at Embeau – 3 ½ yr old d having good wrinkle & a pleasing head & expression. Nice crested neck & good shoulder angulations, straight. Level topline, good depth of chest, spring of rib, well made & muscled quarters & good tailset. Moved out well & was sound fore & aft. (BOB);

2nd: Mrs S M Knowles’ Ch Bushwacker Dragon Tattoo at Sarawana – Liked her size, preferred front of winner here, lovely balanced dog allover, very good mover;

3rd: Ch Swanwite Take A Chance On Me ShCEx - Another good dog in this class, so little to separate these 3.

BAVARIAN MOUNTAIN HOUND

Junior (2): 1st: Miss C & Miss C Morrin & Barbi’s Donard Dream for Arlatdax -8 month old dog, good typical head, needs to strengthen it’s front and drop down his chest,which I hope mit will come with age. Correct topline & croup, moved best. (BP, BOB);

2nd: Miss A M Hill’s Russdales Adonis – Preferred body on this one, good head correct eye & mouth, good depth of chest, couldn’t go over it properly or assess movement as the this dog needs some serious ringcraft training. (Res BOB)

1st: Miss A James’ Golden Retriever, Tsarmont Oh So Starstruck (ai) this 9 month old b took to the ring as if she’d been showing for years, catching my eye as soon as she entered the ring. Sweet feminine head, with well chiselled features. Ddark eye with a soft expression. Dark pigmentation. Clean neck leading and fabulous shoulders. Straight forelegs and super cat like feet. Very balanced throughout. Short coupled, good strong square hindquarters with short hocks. Moved soundly maintaining her level topline.

2nd: Mr G D & Mrs E & Miss A E & Mr S D Turnbull & Turnbull & Turnbull & Keene’s GWP, Glenquin The Colonel at Elagram (seen in breed) A super example of the breed. A mature looking puppy, but not overdone in any way. Lovely appealing head and expression, with dark eyes and correct ear set, good face furnishings, depth of chest and good angulation front and rear. Inner and outer coat is correct and he was shown in hard condition, moving round the ring with style. One to watch for future development.

3rd: Sharnphilly Canasta for Riowood (Pointer); 4th: Quettadene Rising Star (Spaniel (Cocker); VHC: Scenterbay Rafael for Ruichango (Dachshund Min Smooth)

ROSEWOOD A.V SPORTING SPECIAL BEGINNERS STAKES

1st: Mrs A L Tasker’s Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, Zoldmali Ezmi (Imp Srb) - Lovely dog so well balanced and sound, Pleasing in profile he has a well sprung rib with good depth of chest. Excellent front with good bone and slightly sloping pastern. Sound in overall body with good muscle tone and a well-set tail. Shown in good hard condition with a good wire coat. Sound and effortless movement.

2nd: Miss L & Mr R Fazenfield & Smith’s Bracco Italiano, Owlspoint Askin for Trouble - Liked his overall shape and balance. typical head, with good chiselling and spongy nose, low set ears, kind oval eyes. Strong neck, with good depth to the brisket, ample forchest, ribs carried well back, to a short strong loin. Goopd hindquarters, wide thighs with a good bend of stifle. Moved well.

3rd: Passione Knightspool, (Retriever (Chesapeake Bay))

4th: Reffton Tibalt at Whipsearle JW (Imp Esp), (Whippet)

VHC: Ungowa On The Road Again, (Rhodesian Ridgeback)

DAVID MOSS MEMORIAL A/V SPORTING CHAMPION STAKES

1st: Miss L Gleave’s Lakeland Terier, Ch Laketrix Prima Ballerina 2 yr old B so sound having a typical balanced head with good eye and expression, correct ears, slightly arched neck with good reach with no sign of throatiness, well laid back shoulders with straight legs and well boned, well coupled moderately short back, strong and muscular hindquarters, with long thighs and well-bent stifles leading to straight low hocks. Excellent parallel movement.

2nd: J Elders’ Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, Sh Ch Enryb Skye Blue – just over 21/2 yr old, this bitch excelled in head properties having the most gorgeous of expressions, good leather, good reach of neck and well-laid back shoulders, good depth and well-sprung brisket. Good angulations fore and aft standing four square and covering the ground well. Great ring presence, correct coat texture. True effortless movement, a pleasure to see her covering the ground with so much ease.

3rd: Ch Swanwite Take A Chance On Me ShCEx, Basenji
