Many thanks to the secretary and committee for inviting me to judge Airedale Terriers, all the Pastoral breeds and the Pastoral Group at this large Open show. I had an entry of over 80 quality dogs with few absentees. It turned out to be a rather long day being asked to stop for exhibitors showing in other rings made it ‘a bit hard going’ at the end of the day. The standard of the exhibits was outstanding and thank you so much to those who brought champions for me to assess. I was advised some puppies received their last points for their Junior Warrants. I was so pleased my Best Puppy Pastoral went on to be Reserve Best Puppy in Show. My Best Pastoral won a CC shortly afterwards and my Best of Breed Airedale won the Terrier group. What a day! A special thank you to my hard-working stewards, Georgina Howard and Sue Spafford, for their help on the day.

Nice triangular ears with slightly rounded tips set on high carried semi-erect. She appeared rather compact but was just longer than high. Nice reach of neck flowing onto an excellent topline. Very masculine with good bone but certainly not course. Attractive well-proportioned broad head. Correct eyes and beautiful ears enhanced the head. Slightly longer than tall, he has a good depth of chest, super fore chest, was well ribbed back, with strong and broad loin. Oval, compact feet with well arched toes. He moved smoothly and effortlessly. Presented in very good weather resistant coat. showing he was definitely ‘fit for purpose’. His overall showmanship, presentation and quality earned him the group from me. BEST OF BREED.

He really moved like I feel a Border should, freely, smoothly, with good extension in the front and minimum lift of feet. A ‘Fit for Purpose’ Border Collie. Considered him for the top honour. YEARLING (3)

Use of neatly well-placed ears and dark almond eyes helped to give the correct expression. Sufficient length of neck. Well boned. 2. Sorockyj’s Shazbec Maid of Honour at Sheltisha. Just a year old. A shame she did not behave and show herself off better. Lovely well-balanced head with nice dark eyes and beautiful well-set ears. Nice tight feet. In super good textured coat with a white shawl.

POST GRADUATE (1)
1. Sorockyj’s Shazbec Maid of Honour at Sheltisha. SEE ABOVE.
OPEN (4)
1. Walker’s Ch/Fr/Sui/Lux/Int Ch Tooralie’s Pie in the Sky. I thought this sable and white dog was outstanding, his titles in the catalogue proved I was correct, out of the ‘top drawer.’ A very worthy champion who pushed hard to top the group. Presented and handled to perfection. Attractive colouring and white shawl around the neck finished the picture. Super head of correct shape with good skull to muzzle ratio. Well placed and correctly set eyes together with the lovely ears created the ‘Sheltie’ sweet expression. Beautifully constructed with neat feet and well arched toes. Wonderful topline with the lovely desired graceful sweep over the loin. Moved very well, smoothly and gracefully with little lift of feet. Easily BEST OF BREED.
2. Sorockyj’s Sheltisha Royal Approval. Blue merle bitch. Won her place on her lovely head which is of good length with correct parallel planes. 3. Deveson’s Janetstown Je Suis JW ShCM.
4. Ridehalgh’s Edglonian Hearsay.
COLLIE (ROUGH)
PUPPY (4)
1. Wray-Ramsden’s Takhisis Xtraordinary Lady. A 6-month-old Tri coloured bitch presented in her puppy coat and sympathetically handled. With age and confidence, she should grow into a nice bitch. Well-presented and groomed throughout. Super feminine head of all the correct proportions, almond shaped obliquely set eyes and well-placed tipped ears created the desired ‘sweet expression.’ Well-constructed fore and hindquarters, with good bone and tight feet. Moved very well and accurately. BEST PUPPY.
2. Williams’ Essanjay Heartbreaker. A more mature merle puppy bitch wearing a lovely adult coat. Nice feminine head with small eyes and well set, neat ears. Nicely constructed with good bone and in good condition. Good fore chest and neck. Needs to settle in topline as she was rolling badly when on the move, which spoilt her for me. Such a shame.
YEARLING (5)
1. Boyle’s Timeless Destiny Star Actis Over Barrenclough (IMP POL). A good example of the breed, showing that beauty and impassive dignity. Super outline with everything flowing so well. Super head creating the ‘special Collie expression.’ Well-proportioned parallel planes of skull and muzzle, good placement of eyes and ears. Lovely neck and shoulder placement. Firm back with a slight rise over the loin. Ribs well sprung and deep chest. Good hindquarters with well bent stifles and hocks well let down. Moved out confidently smoothly and soundly. Presented in lovely coat.
2. Skinner’s Ladnar Makeithappen for Nikal. Rather a naughty boy, so spoiling his chances. His blue merle coat was on the blow, but it was of a nice colour and well broken. He presented a good outline when standing. His head was well-proportioned with dark eyes and good ear carriage when he chose to use them. Good reach of neck, well laid shoulders, correct topline, good bend of stifle, well let down hocks and nice length of tail. He moved OK when settled.
3. Mills’ Hanvale Edina Monsoon at Lemivee.
4. Congdon’s Aaronwell Able Mabel.
POST GRADUATE (2)
1. Boyle’s Timeless Destiny Star Actis Over Barrenclough (IMP POL). AS ABOVE.
2. Mills’ Hanvale Edina Monsoon at Lemivee. A sable bitch who was placed third in the previous class, because I considered her eyes were too small detracting from the length and expression of her head. The ears were too large and heavy for me. Which is a shame. She is beautifully presented with a super coat and in lovely condition. Good neck and well laid shoulders. Firm topline. Well bent stifles, low set hocks. Tail reaches to hocks. Moved very well.
OPEN (6)
1. Milligan & Marley’s Alfsden He Lives in You. Mature attractive masculine blue merle dog. Having a super coat and presenting a wonderful outline. Very masculine head, with flat skull and muzzle on parallel planes. Small well-set ears, which he used. Medium sized almond eyes aided the correct expression. Lovely length to neck into well placed shoulders. Depth to brisket, with right amount of chest width and tidy elbows. Stands on round boned legs, good pasterns and oval neat feet. Nice flowing topline sweeping to croup, good tail set and carriage. Well-bent stifles and tidy neat hocks. When moving covered the ground with fluidity and drive. BEST OF BREED.
2. Wray-Ramsden’s Takhisis Lady of Mystery. A very feminine sable bitch of a pleasing shape, carrying just enough coat. Such a lovely true Collie head giving the wonderful, sweet expression. A well-blunted clean wedge with flat skull. Skull and muzzle on two parallel planes. Obliquely set almond shaped eyes and well-placed ears. Nicely made body. Super mover. Just lost out to the more finished winner today.
3. Leese’s Essanjay Fields of Gold for Firesaga.
4. Pullin’s Barrenclough Diamond Dawn at Myjacks.
5. Congdon’s Aaronwell Able Mabel.
COLLIE (SMOOTH)
OPEN (3)
Three nice examples of the breed and hard decisions to be made.
1. Seager’s Blamorder Magic Maker with Freejack JW. I have judged this chap several times and watched him mature. Masculine, of good size but not coarse. He is a real charmer, a bit naughty with a lovely personality that you can’t ignore. He has a well-proportioned masculine wedged head forming two parallel planes. Strong under-jaw, good bite and black nose. Flat skull, with ears set correctly and used, nicely tipped. Correct oblique eye placement. A well arched muscular neck, flowing into well laid shoulders. Forelegs are straight and strong with moderate bone and chest deep enough for his age. Well sprung ribs. Hocks are strong and stifles well bent. He moves well. BEST OF BREED.
2. Robertson’s Wynele Strike One. Another very nice tri coloured dog with very similar attributes as the above. On the day I thought the above had a better flow of topline and slight rise over the loin, but it was splitting hairs. Nicely marked and well presented. Very nice balanced head giving the correct Collie expression. Decent reach of neck. Good depth of chest and lay of shoulders. Correct length of back to height ratio, well sprung ribs. Good bone and feet. Well set tail. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.
3. Jerrett’s Coldelee Eternal Sunshine JW. A very nice feminine bitch who I felt was the best mover, but I did not like her head so much.

Correct flow of topline on firm back. Well-muscled hindquarters with lovely strong, firm hocks. Correct tail. Very sound moving keeping his shape on the move. I hope his sable colour does not peg him back as he should do well. BEST A.V.N.S.C. PASTORAL PUPPY.
2. Whalley’s Old English Sheepdog, Jelabobs Rupert the Bear. A very raw 6 month old dog with an in experienced handler, but we all had to start somewhere. Some lovely Veterans.
1. Deveson’s Shetland Sheepdog, Janetstown Je Suis JW ShCM.
