United Retriever Club

I felt very honoured to be asked by this specialized Gundog club to judge at their show. It is the first time I have attended this event and found it very enjoyable. Thank you to my steward, Nigel Merriol, who did an excellent job and especially the exhibitors for entering their lovely Tollers for me to assess.

RETRIEVER (NOVA SCOTIA DUCK TOLLING)

PUPPY DOG (1)

1. Westwood & McDonald’s Eusanit Loved and Lost. An 11-month-old puppy of correct construction and compact outline, nicely balanced. Wedge shaped head with moderate stop. Almond eyes of good colour, giving a soft expression, ears set well. Excellent bone and round tight feet, well arched. Body developing well. Nice tail set and coat. Moved better as time went on. BEST PUPPY DOG & BEST PUPPY IN BREED.

YEARLING DOG (2)

1. Bate-Ash & Ash’s Sinsircariad Old Fashioned. A good example of the breed. Nicely balanced, powerful, well-muscled and giving a lovely overall outline. Well-shaped masculine head, moderate stop and correct eye colour. Triangular ears, well set. Good neck, lay of shoulders, fore chest, well boned legs, sloping pasterns and round tight feet. Well bodied and ribbed well back. Short back with level topline. Well-muscled hindquarters and bent stifles. Good tail set nicely carried. Moved well and got better as he went along. Lacking in full coat, which I put down to his age. BEST DOG & BEST OF BREED.

2. Smith’s TollIsty Raudr. I felt he was not so compact as above. About the same age and may be a slower maturer. He has a very nice wedge-shaped head, correct almond shaped eyes and ears well set. Well-muscled neck, flowing into well laid-back shoulders. Forelegs straight, strong and well boned, going down to super strong, slightly sloping pasterns. Level topline and hocks well let down. Good movement. In better coat.

POST GRADUATE DOG (3)

1. Strevens’ Tollisty You Can’t Decline. Attractive dark coat colour of good quality. A well-balanced compact body producing a nice outline. Well-proportioned, masculine head of pleasing shape, moderate stop, correct eye colour and good ear size, giving a soft expression. Shoulders well laid back, straight fore legs and tight well-presented feet. Nicely bodied, ribbed well back. Well-muscled hindquarters with stifles well bent. Excellent topline and tail set, tail well carried. Moved out with good stride.

2. Brand’s Coedhelyg Jingle All the Way. Preferred the body frame of above, but good overall shape and size. Very nice slightly wedge-shaped head, correct skull, moderate stop, lovely dark eyes giving typical expression and well-placed ears. Good tail set, with tail well feathered which he carried well on the move. In good double coat.

OPEN DOG (2)

1. Rogers’ Eusanit Peaky Blinder. Mature compact balanced dog producing a good outline. Powerful and muscled. Masculine head, broad and slightly rounded. Medium sized almond shaped eyes of correct colour. Good length of strongly muscled neck, flowing into well laid shoulders. Elbows close to body, with fore legs straight and strong. Round, tight, well arched feet. Good length of leg, deep chest with brisket reaching elbows. Correct topline, spring of ribs and short loin. Well-muscled hindquarters. Moved well. RESERVE BEST DOG.

2. Bate-Ash’ Eusanit Hit the Lights. A lovely ‘chap,’ full of character. Just right to jump and play to lure waterfowl into decoy. In super condition with a gleaming orange double coated jacket. Finished off with white on tip of tail and feet. Very attractive masculine wedge-shaped head with a white blaze. Defined stop, medium sized almond eyes with colour blending well with his attractive colour. Deep chest with brisket reaching his elbows. A well-muscled fit dog, able to do his job. Moved enthusiastically using his tail well, typical happy Toller disposition.

PUPPY BITCH (2)

1. Westwood’s Travelda’s Genevieve Pine Avec Eusanit (IMP USA). 8-month-old bitch with an excellent outline, totally balanced and keeping her topline both standing and on the move. On the smaller size but is 3 months younger than the bitch placed second. Correct head shape with almond shaped eyes of pleasing colour and high set ears. Neck of good length. Straight well boned legs and tight round arched feet. Level topline, strong muscular loin. Well-muscled rear, hocks well let down. Moved very well with reach and drive. Just needs more confidence and maturing. BEST PUPPY BITCH.

YEARLING BITCH (4)

1. Burchell’s Flavour of Tokaj Aszu Suchy Las Vegas to Tivalake (IMP POL). I really fell in love with this gorgeous young lady. Just what I thought a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever should look like. Compact, well-muscled, powerful and fit. Wonderful movement, covering the ground with ease. I wish she had not left her coat at home, I suppose it is her age. Such a shame. Well balanced bitch who presents a pleasing outline. Super well-proportioned slightly wedge-shaped feminine head. Almond shaped eyes, blending with her coat colour. Strong well-muscled neck, shoulders well laid back, straight well boned forelegs and excellent feet. Body developing well, ribs well sprung, firm topline which she maintained standing and moving, tail well feathered and carried. Well-muscled hindquarters, stifles well bent and hocks well let down. Shiny coat enhanced with white markings as a blaze, on tip of tail, chest and feet. Very fit for purpose. BEST BITCH, RESERVE BEST OF BREED & BEST OPPOSITE SEX.
