Aberystwyth & District Canine Society

Thank you to the officers and committee for inviting me to judge the Pastoral group at this show. A special thank you to Sue Banks and the exhibitors for patiently waiting for me to arrive. Unfortunately, the day before, I suffered some strange terrible headache, causing me to have very high blood pressure and spending most of the evening in Bath A & E hospital. I had a good entry and was keen on judging your lovely dogs. I am so pleased I managed it, as so many were really of a very high standard. A number of champions and wonderful, quality veterans, proving their owners have taken great care looking after them over the years. I was really delighted my Best Pastoral Veteran went on to be Best Veteran in Show and my Best Pastoral won Best in Show, quickly winning three CCs in a short time, becoming a champion at such a young age. Lastly, thank you to my hardworking steward.

PASTORAL GROUP

HUNGARIAN PULI

Graduate Dog or Bitch (2)

Two nice puppies.

1. Thomas’ Chesmes Kutya Magyar Hettie at Mournebrake. A well-presented 6-month-old black bitch puppy of good size and shape, with cords coming. Correct mouth, fine head with good pigment. Arches of eyes well defined, presenting dark brown eyes with lively expression. Nice, angled neck into well laid shoulders. Good depth of well sprung ribs. Muscled throughout. Strong hindquarters and low hocks. Typical short stepping movement. BEST PUPPY & RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

2. Gracie’s Mournebrake Dear Prudence (ATC BA22144005). 9 months old and appeared quite a different type and different presentation. She had no black mask, which did not aid pigmentation. Also, she was slightly larger and less compact to the above. Good tail set and carriage. Moved very well.

Open Dog or Bitch (3)

1. Thomas’ Mournebrake Insomnia Café. A lovely 4-year-old mature bitch, showing off a well-balanced square outline of sturdy and muscular appearance. Head OK, correct pigmentation, with dark brown eyes. Correct mouth and ears. Muscular neck and well laid shoulders. Presented in excellent condition and coat, with desired cords. Good bone. Well sprung ribs. Strong, well-muscled hindquarters with well bent stifles. Nicely rounded feet. Very well handled, aiding short stepping, quick, correct movement. BEST OF BREED.

2. Gracie’s Mournebrake Pretty Little Angel Eyes at Celebros. 2-year-old bitch, maturing with good, corded coat. Nice in head and disposition, with dark eyes. Good neck. Moved OK. Placed Infront of the very immature puppy that was playing up her handler.

3. Thomas’ Mournebrake Touch an Angel.

WELSH CORGI (CARDIGAN)

Puppy Dog or Bitch (3)

Both absolutely super puppies.

1. Langford’s Gowerston Geriant of Caprian. This 8-month-old puppy dog had a lovely outline and overall shape. Well balanced and sturdy. Nice ‘fox shaped’ head with large well-placed ears and dark eyes. Good neck, with fore chest developing well. Correct length of back with level topline. Well bent stifles and nice, neat hocks, long tail carried correctly. Moved free and actively with elbows fitting closely to sides. Well boned and constructed, masculine, but not overdone. Good hard, weather-proof coat. Large tight feet. I will watch his future with interest. Just what I think a Cardigan puppy should look like. BEST PUPPY & RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

2. Davies’ Joseter Ooh Betty at Ceranda. 6-month-old bitch puppy and such a baby. I am sure she will be a ‘cracker’ as she grows up and matures. Compared to the more mature dog, she had to take 2nd place on the day. She is very promising, attractive, sturdily built and well grown. She has good overall development for her age with just enough body substance and a firm level top line. A delight to go over. I look forward to seeing her again when older.

Graduate Dog or Bitch (2)

1. Newman’s Cwmteifi Gwen Blodyn. A very attractive merle bitch, having all the main attributes of a Cardigan Corgi. Looking sturdy and tough, with a longish body. Nicely shaped well-proportioned head with flat wide skull. Nice eyes and slightly round large ears. Muscular neck flowing into well laid shoulders. Forearms nicely bowed to wrap around her chest. Well sprung ribs and level topline. Strong hindquarters, nicely muscled. Moved very well.

2. Field’s Gowerston Grantchester. A nice type, but heavily built and heavily coated, which for me spoilt his overall outline. Very masculine, attractive, well-proportioned head. Ears of good size and set, eyes blend with coat colour. Good neck. Well-muscled and boned. Stands on correct round feet. Moved well, in particular his rear action. Coat of good texture.

Open Dog or Bitch (5)

1. Williams & James’ Ch Bwthyn Headliner JW ShCM ShCEx VW. One of the stars of the day for me. He caught my eye as soon as he stood in the ring. A perfect Cardigan Corgi and a very worthy champion. He just stands there, showing himself off with that self-importance expression. He certainly does not look his age and when I was told he is heading for 10, I thought he must be my Best Veteran, but the Bearded Collie just pipped him on movement in the end, such a shame. I felt he was faultless, beautifully presented and lovingly handled. What a super dog. Full of breed type and presented is such good condition. One of those dogs that the more you look at him the more you appreciate him. A pleasure to judge. However, like a lot of ‘old chaps’ who have been there and done it all, he had to be encouraged to move a bit faster. I don’t blame him at his age. When motivated, he has excellent movement as would be expected from such a well-constructed dog. BEST OF BREED.

2. Langford’s Caprian Adrianna JW. A very feminine bitch, lighter in construction, but she did have sufficient bone and condition. Attractive fox-like head, correct ears and eyes. Good front, well-developed and muscular neck. Good spring of rib. Level topline which she kept on the move. Her movement was free and active, reaching out in front with thrust from the rear.

3. Langford’s Caprian the Vixen JW.

4. Essenhigh & Bishop’s Ceranda Gower Charmer at Brynlluan.

WELSH CORGI (PEMBROKE)

Graduate Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Davies’ Ceranda Midnight Gem. A very nice 16-month-old bitch, she appeared a bit apprehensive on the day, which was a great shame. She was nicely grown and well presented. Everything correct and a good example of the breed. BEST OF BREED.

BEARDED COLLIE

Graduate Dog or Bitch (3)

1. Axford’s Bramblemead Sparkling Lady (ATC BA18981901). A very pleasing balanced outline, well-presented and handled. She has very good head proportions with a broad, flat square skull. Eyes were light blue toning with her coat colour, as she was born blue. Level topline. Good hindquarters with well bent stifles and low hocks. She moved out well and carried her tail correctly.

2. Axford’s Bramblemead Bollinger Boy (ATC BA18981903). Nicely well grown balanced dog. Appeared shorter in outline. Good head and expression. Strong neck. Nicely angulated, with a level topline. He does not tend to have the supple flowing movement of his sister, tends to get excited and carry his tail too high.

3. Kitchen’s Mollyfleck Gift of Gold.

Open Dog or Bitch (5)

1. Steer-Edridge’s Brookles the Gift You Are of Gwalltafwyn JW ShCM. This bitch is nearly 11 years old and certainly does not look it! Presented and handled to perfection. She meets the breed standard very well. Strongly made, with a lean outline, definitely ‘fit for purpose’, very self-confident and loves to show off. Super head and expression. Broad, flat, square skull and strong muzzle. Slightly arched neck, flowing into well laid shoulders. Straight forelegs with good bone. Correct length of level back. Well-muscled hindquarters with good turn if stifle and low hocks. Low set tail correctly carried. Her movement for a dog of nearly 11 is first class. She just floats around the ring, smoothly, long reaching, covering the ground with minimum of effort. She is in wonderful coat for a bitch of this age. I was pleased she went Best Veteran in Show. She put on a wonderful performance in the big ring. BEST OF BREED.

2. Axford’s Bramblemead Sparkling Lady (ATC BA18981901). As Above. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

3. Axford’s Bramblemead Bollinger Boy (ATC BA18981903).

4. Sterr-Eldridge’s Ir Ch Kakos the Happiest Days of Gwalltafwyn JW.

5. Kitchen’s Ceilmear’s Wise Man.

BORDER COLLIE

Graduate Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Warren’s Welshspel Celti Warrior (ATC AY09857504). A 2-year-old dog. Lighter framed, with just enough bone and balanced. Nice, well-proportioned head with broad skull and muzzle tapering to nose. Good mouth. Athletic body, muscular hindquarters with well-turned stifles. Presented in good coat. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

Open Dog or Bitch (2)

1. Lusty’s Birkcross Simply the Zest for Blamorder. Classically marked, 2-year-old feminine bitch. Good head, with broad skull and well-defined stop. Good, slightly arched neck broadening into shoulders. Nice length of body and topline. In good condition, sufficient bone and well-presented coat. BEST OF BREED.

SHETLAND SHEEPDOG

Graduate Dog or Bitch (2)

Two completely different sizes- little and large.

1. Ferguson’s Dinmore Wild Blue Yonder of Fervaila. A 10-month-old merle dog puppy. Rather on the large side, I hope he does not grow anymore. Although he is very big, he is not coarse or cloddy, of a nice shape and outline. Head in proportion to his body with lovely ear carriage and expression. Nicely angulated. Moves smoothly and gracefully but flies his tail a little high at times. BEST OF BREED & BEST PUPPY.

2. Williams’ Zaniah’s Castiel. 4 months older and very much smaller. Too light in body for a dog for me. His blaze on his head emphasizes the narrowness of his head. Good almond eyes and small ears. He was correctly constructed, with a level back. Beautifully presented coat. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

COLLIE (ROUGH)

Graduate Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Flower’s Serenlas Truly Scrumptious. What a lovely name, which describes her very well. A gorgeous 7-month-old sable bitch puppy. Certainly, has a friendly outgoing disposition, just needs to settle a little. She creates a lovely outline of perfect balance. A good well-blunted clean wedge of a head with flat skull. Eyes of correct size and position, giving that ‘sweet’ expression. Lovely ears finish the picture. Well arched neck and good shoulder placement. Correct body shape. Well-muscled hindquarters and well bent stifles. A very sound mover, when settled. Presented in beautiful coat. I fell in love with her personality, not often seen in Collies. BEST OF BREED & BEST PUPPY.

Open Dog or Bitch (2)

1. Flower’s Serenlas Pumpkin Spice JW. Another good type of balanced Rough Collie. I just preferred the head of the puppy. Correct bite, dark almond shaped eyes, clean head planes and neatly tipped ears. Very nice shape. Good length of back to height. Well-muscled and good bend of stifles. Neat feet with arched toes and good pasterns. Moved well. Presented in lovely coat. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

2. Mathias’ Serenlas Daggerspell of Dapperdax. Appeared more the ‘old type’ of Rough Collie dog. A well-blunted clean wedge head. Correct almond shaped eyes, but ears not very tipped on the day. He has a good reach of neck and well-placed sloping shoulders. Well-made and muscled, with a good bend of stifle. Moved OK. Presented in very nice coat.

COLLIE (SMOOTH)

Graduate Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Lusty’s Blamorder Dare to Dream. Quality young tri coloured bitch of 7 months, having that intelligent, alert appearance. She has such a lovely feminine expressive head, well placed exquisite dark eyes, giving that ‘sweet’ expression. May be her age, but the only criticism was her ears were not very tipped on the day, which hopefully will come with age. Otherwise, wonderful in every way. She has a clean head of good length and correct stop. A nicely arched neck flowing into wonderful shoulders, with good fore chest. Straight forelegs, with correct bone. Super outline, with level, firm back with slight rise over the loin. Well ribbed back, with deep chest. Muscled hindquarters and bent stifles. Good tail set and carriage. Very sound movement, effortlessly gliding around the ring. Excellent coat texture. One to watch. BEST OF BREED & BEST PUPPY.

Open Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Lusty’s Ch. Blamorder Ice Cream Dream. A stunning 7-year-old Blue Merle bitch, not looking her age at all. A very worthy champion, as she was gorgeous. However, on the day I felt she had to let the puppy take Best of Breed. Beautiful veteran, excelling in breed type. Feminine clean head, sweet expression, correct stop, strong underjaw and super ear set. Soundly constructed with super shoulder placement and well-muscled hindquarters. Lovely topline and correct length of back. Free, easy, sound movement with reach and drive covering the ground effortlessly. Presented in excellent coat and condition. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

BELGIAN SHEPHERD DOG (TERVUEREN)

Graduate Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Skilling’s Hawksflight Wrapped in Love. Just a year old. Nice square outline with proud head carriage. Nice, chiseled head with correct almond shaped dark eyes, high set ears, good bite and black mask. Balanced body with close fitting shoulders and well-muscled hindquarters. Nice tight feet with well arched toes and a lovely easy trotting gait. Super rich colour. Presented in lovely coat.

Open Dog or Bitch (4)

1. Roux’s Domburg New Love at Willowfrost. Absolutely lovely example of this breed, such an elegant bitch, with her square outline, proud head carriage and arched neck. Long, finely chiselled head with tapering muzzle. Her Skull is of correct shape and proportions of skull to muzzle are excellent. Lovely parallel head planes. Good mask and the blackest of noses, with dark almond shaped eyes. High set triangular ears and correct scissor bite. Shoulder blades long and flat, deep chest, going into nicely proportioned square body, with firm topline. Good spring of rib, slightly sloping croup, hocks well let down and correctly angulated hindquarters. Tail set and carriage are very good. Wonderful, brisk, free movement, covering the ground economically, keeping her topline firm. Stands four square on tight feet with arched toes. Presented in beautiful coat. BEST OF BREED.

2. Cousins & Morris’ Ambrajai Temptation. A lovely old lady of literally 11 years old. Other than going a bit grey, she certainly did not look or act her age. A nice overall shape, correct head and slightly arched neck. In very good condition and up on her pasterns. Nicely muscled and moved very well. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

BELGIAN SHEPHERD DOG (GROENENDAEL)

Graduate Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Folkes’ Evangeline De L’Ambassadeur Des Delges at Dacfolke Imp Hug NAF TAF. A very nice-looking bitch, showing a good square outline and correct bone throughout. A balanced head, with lovely parallel head planes. She has a very alert expression, high set triangular ears, muzzle to skull ratios are good and she has the darkest of eyes. Nice topline and undercarriage with just a moderate tuck up. Correct slightly sloping croup and muscled hindquarters. Well presented in lovely condition. Moved freely. BEST OF BREED.

Open Dog or Bitch (2)

1. Morris’ Ch. Domburg Can’t Say No to Cairbar. Presented an elegant square outline, with proud head carriage. A pleasing feminine head, long and finely chiseled, of correct proportions. Medium sized eyes and well-set ears. Moderate reach of neck into a good lay of shoulder and deep chest. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG

Graduate Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Stephens’ Chalksville Made of Magic for Brightmeadow. The star of the day for me, who went on to be Best in Show. I was lucky enough to judge him as a puppy, he is now 14-month-old and maturing into a wonderful dog. He just oozes quality. Workmanlike and balanced. A clean-cut head of good proportions, almond shaped dark eyes, well set ears with a strong jaw and good teeth. Correct length of neck into good shoulders. Straight fore legs with oval bone and firm, supple pasterns. Nice tight feet. Lovely depth of chest with a good front. Firm, strong, well-muscled back presenting a lovely topline. Croup slightly sloping. Well-muscled hindquarters and strong, firm hocks. A very sound mover. Good reach from the front and thrust from the rear, flowing around the ring, keeping his topline. He is such a natural showman. I love him to bits. After this show he received CCs in rapid succession and is now a champion at such a young age. He has won so many Best Puppy and Best in Show awards at all the local Open shows, plus placed in championship show groups. Just gorgeous. BEST OF BREED.

Open Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Lemon’s Solophina Floyd at Mitzahner. Another, I see I have judged before. Attractive black and gold coloured masculine dog of a super type. Lovely strong head, with dark eyes and good firm ears. Very good hindquarters. Moved well. Presented in super condition, giving a nice overall shape. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

CATALAN SHEEPDOG

Open Dog or Bitch (2)

Two older kennel mates who were half-sisters.

1. Kitchen’s Sevarna Delightful Dilys. 6-year-old bitch of correct size and shape. Strong, well-proportioned head, short blunt muzzle, dark round eyes and good pigmentation. Forelegs straight and parallel. Good lay back of shoulders and well sprung ribs. Muscled body with firm, level topline. Slightly sloping croup. Muscled hindquarters with double dew claws. Smooth movement. Wavy, rough coat. BEST OF BREED.

2. Kitchen’s Sevarna Catalonia’s Angel. 11 years old and beginning to show her age, not in the best of coats. Moderately short neck and well-defined withers. Nice shoulders and good length of back to height. Neat, oval feet, Slight slope to croup, well let down hocks and double dew claws. Not so good at moving on the day. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD

Graduate Dog or Bitch (2)

1. Ashley-Smith’s Blamorder Call It the Blues. Very happy exuberant merle bitch puppy. Attractive head and appeared to have a longer muzzle, perhaps not such a defined stop. Due to her colouring, she had the appropriate eye colouring. Very nice triangular ears. In nice condition and muscled. Difficult to assess her movement. BEST OF BREED & BEST PUPPY.

SAMOYED

Graduate Dog or Bitch (2)

1. Wilson’s Gwyneira Scarlet Witch. 11-month-old puppy, full of herself with a lot to say! Feminine wedge-shaped head with strong muzzle and good pigmentation. Well set dark, almond eyes. Nicely boned and muscled, presenting an attractive overall appearance. Long, profusely coated tail, well set and carried. Lovely coat. Moved freely and strongly, covering the ground with ease. BEST PUPPY & RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

2. Brookes Foss’ Appassionata Dream Fantasy. Quite different, who had a flesh-coloured nose, which is acceptable. Presented in good condition of coat and muscled body. Not the movement of above.

Open Dog or Bitch (4)

Two lovely oldies, both a credit to their owners.

1. Ashbourne’s Angelicus Cahlua. Another of the dogs I liked a lot. Nearly 9 years old and still full of himself. Showing the true full of action, alert, intelligent temperament and ‘smiling expression.’ Really beautiful for his age and a natural showman. Powerful wedge-shaped head, with broad, flat skull. Black nose and points. Nice eyes and super slightly rounded ears, well set and used. Proudly arched neck, leading into well laid shoulders, with straight, good boned forelegs. Muscular body and hindquarters, standing on good feet. Well set and used tail. Moved freely and smoothly with extension from the front and drive from the rear. Presented in lovely coat. Super for an ‘oldie.’ BEST OF BREED.

2. Brookes Foss’ Vandreem Imperial Finesse for Appassionata. Another nice 9-year-old bitch. A credit to her owner. Presented in super coat and condition, with all the correct dark points. Moved very well for her age.

LANCASHIRE HEELER

Graduate Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Merrells’ Swanndale Antony. Correct, well balanced head, in proportion to his body. Flat skull, wide between the ears. Dark eyes and erect ears used well. Nice body shape. Well-muscled hindquarters, good turn of stifle and well let down hocks. Attractive colouring with all the correct markings. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

Open Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Merrells’ Taigwynion Ewart James. A larger, mature 7-year-old dog. Masculine, well balanced head of good shape, ample width of skull with a moderate stop and dark eyes. One ear rather floppy, but there was lift at the base. Well placed shoulders and a level top line. Muscled hindquarters with well-turned stifles. Presented in lovely condition. Moved OK. BEST OF BREED.

FINNISH LAPPHUND

Graduate Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Williams’ Rycamrhia Brianna in Tinland. A 6-year-old bitch, who stood nicely, almost square, with natural grace and balance. Presented in lovely condition. Super profuse, long coat, of very attractive colouring. Good head with well used ears. Nicely constructed, well-muscled and moved OK. BEST OF BREED.

POLISH LOWLAND SHEEPDOG

Graduate Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Cousins’ Dorianblue Scarlet Rebel. A nice shaped cobby, rectangular bodied bitch. Good head, in proportion to body. Well balanced with moderately broad, slightly domed skull and required furrow. Nice eyes with correct expression. A well-structured body, aiding very good smooth movement. BEST OF BREED.

ANY VARIETY NOT SEPARATELY CLASSIFIED PASTORAL

Puppy Dog or Bitch (3)

1. Price’s Swedish Vallhund, Valltineya Starlight Rodeo. An 8-month-old dog puppy of a very striking coat colour, with contrasting shades in all the right places. Small, sturdily built dog with long body. Typical, blunt wedged, rather long, head. Almost flat skull and well-defined stop. Oval dark eyes and medium, pointed, pricked ears. Well-constructed with level back. Moved out well, free and active. Forelegs moving well forward without much lift, with thrust from the rear. BEST PUPPY & RESERVE BEST A.V.N.S.C. PASTORAL.

2. Bamford & Church’s Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Pafaxen A Million Dreams. This 11-month-old brother and sister are obviously much alike. In the end, I chose the bitch because I preferred her head and forequarters. For such large dogs they were presented in excellent condition and coat. A real credit to their owners. Both looked powerful and imposing with elegance. The bitch has a lovely balanced head with skull of good width and muzzle of good length. Dark almond shaped eyes set correctly, with small triangular ears. Good eye rims and close-fitting lips. Short neck and shoulders lying close to body. I thought her back that was a bit ‘dippy’ at times. She should tighten up as she matures. Deep chest and well sprung ribs. Muscled hindquarters. Excellent good bone and feet. Moved very well, with ease, for a large young dog.

3. Bamford & Church’s Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Pafaxen High in The Sky.

Graduate Dog or Bitch (2)

1. Bamford & Church’s Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Pafaxen A Million Dreams. As Above.

2. Bamford & Church’s Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Pafaxen High in The Sky. Much the same comments as his siter, above. I just preferred her head and his elbows were not quite so close to his chest. I felt he had a better topline.

Open Dog or Bitch (1)

1. Bailey’s Australian Cattle Dog, Ch. Bryndingo Bendigeidfran. A very worthy champion and at 8 years old, still a fit masculine dog showing substance, power and balance, standing four square. Nice, strong masculine head with broad skull and definite stop. Dark oval eyes and pricked ears, broad at the base and moderately pointed. Muscular neck, well laid shoulders, straight legs with strong round bone. Strong back with level topline. Deep chest and well sprung ribs. Well-muscled hindquarters and firm hocks. Free easy mover, demonstrating true soundness. Fit for purpose. BEST A.V.N.S.C. PASTORAL.
