Potteries Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club Open Show

01st December 2024

Judge Dave Mckimm

My thanks to everyone at PSBTC for giving me this opportunity of judging the show and the hospitality on the day. A little different for me to other shows having to still arrive early to set up and be there at the end to take it all down but that’s the joys of being the Club Secretary. Special thanks to my very able stewards Luke and Cameron for keeping everything running well on the day.

Without a doubt the biggest thanks go to all the exhibitors and the huge privilege afforded me in assessing their dogs and the sporting way my decisions were accepted, plenty of hands being shook, smiling faces and cheers from around the ring seemed to be the order of the day. I was very pleased with my entry and the general standard of exhibits on the day, with some very tough choices in some of the classes but as always only one opinion on one day and all the very best to you all for the future.

Mouths were generally ok with the usual and expected odd chipped or broken tooth and a few dirty ones, also the odd tight canine but nothing to give me any major concerns in my main placings and it should be assumed from here on to save repetition all my top placings had a good bite . I did not experience any exhibits displaying respiratory difficulties. Fitness levels were lacking on some exhibits, and made a difference to places, though due consideration was given for the younger exhibits, and as I have said before and many others before me this is something that everyone can work on so please do take note.

Class 1 MPD (3,1)

1. Elitebull Valentine (Jennings, Ms L) 09.04.24

Pied male with minimal red marking of almost 8 months , head coming along nicely with good length to muzzle and a good underjaw , tidy enough ears and a dark eye , good amount of bone for his frame and a good width to his clean straight front with nice tidy feet, good rib for age, front and rear angulation ok , and a pleasing view in side profile, brisket developing nicely , moved ok holding his topline and handled well

2. Geordiestaff Local Hero (Hall L) 04.04.24

Black Brindle lad with white blaze and white feet of a much different style to 1st place, with more strength to his head and correct length to muzzle, clean enough in lip and a good underjaw , tidy ears used to create an amusing and curious expression. Clean in profile with enough width to his front and good angulation, quite up on the leg at this stage , handled well , moved well keeping his topline. Just felt for me my first place was the better balanced package at this age but a long way to go on these youngsters

Class 2 PD (3,0)

1. Biggleswick Devils Dream (Harte,Mrs V) 18.01.24

Couldn’t help but to be drawn into this very smart young male. Beautiful deep red coat with white blaze and front toes of 10 months old. Plenty of strength to his head but in good proportion to his strong and compact frame. Nice dark well set eyes, good cheek bumps and good pigmentation framed by tidy enough ears which were used well to create a lovely expression and a good underjaw. Ample width to his clean well boned front showing some forechest he is a very compact strong package with ample strength to his rear quarters. Well ribbed and correctly coupled with correct depth to brisket. Moved well out and back once settled holding a level topline , handled well and could see he was pleased to be in the ring and plenty of confidence. Went on to gain BPD and then meeting his litter sister in the Best Puppy challenge to be awarded BPIS . Well done with him and look forward to seeing him progress in the future , thankyou for bringing him.

2. Kamaristaffs Royal Legend (Moult ,Mr L & Mrs E) 16.02.24

Black Brindle male of 9 months he has a more classic head shape to my first place but well proportioned and good length to muzzle , dark eye and tidy ears used well, ok for underjaw. Good length of neck leading into a clean straight front assembly and good bone with tidy feet. Good front and rear angulation , moved well holding a level topline and also when stacked, handled well. 2 very nice dogs with a bright future but for me first place excelled in ring presence and though a cliché unlucky to meet today

3. Sharmara Lacrnum Inflamari (Duffield & Mansell-Duffield Mrs M & Mr T) 17.12.23

Class 3 JD (2,1)

1. Bullbrothers MonteCristo (Cushley Mr S) 01.11.23

Red male of 13 months with white head markings and another very promising youngster showing good muscle tone without overdoing things at this stage. He has a very appealing head with good length of muzzle , a good underjaw , dark eye with tidy ears used well throughout the class obviously taking it all in and on his toes throughout. He has a good clean straight front and viewed in profile correct depth of brisket and curving up nicely into a light loin. He has a great ratio of bone to frame which for me was spot on and a demonstration of a nice standard dog , plenty of rib and correctly coupled with good front and rear angulation. Moved out and back well once settled holding a level topline, very well handled and awarded RBD , all the very best for a successful future and thankyou for bringing him.

Class 4 YD (1,0)

Class 5 ND (5,1)

1. BullBrothers Howay The Lads (Martinez Mr I & Mr JR) 27.10.22

Brindle male of over 2 years and very much a nice standard dog not overdone in any way , pleasing head of good proportions with good length to muzzle , tidy enough ears and eyes dark enough, very alert and attentive throughout the class putting his ears to good use and on his toes thoughout , he has a clean straight front of enough width and enough bone, correct depth of brisket, good rib for size. moved well holding a level topline , great relationship with his handler and another enjoying his time in the ring , he had a good contender in my 2nd place but maturity was mainly the deciding factor.

2. Elitebull Valentine - see 1st MPD

3. Harlivstaff Captain Coady (Shepherd Miss M) 26.04.23

Res T’Blazing Star of the Warriors Red Skins (Imp Fra) (Courtney Mrs DE) 30.03.22

1. Kalostaff Es Lo Que Es JW (Lloyd Mr S & Mrs A) 26.11.22

Black Brindle well boned strong dog of 2 years , he has a very strong head with deep stop and good cheek bumps, ears ok , eyes dark enough , good length and width to muzzle with plenty of underjaw, plenty width to front , short neck leading into correct and powerful shoulders. Very well ribbed and correctly coupled . His overall muscle definition was exceptional and the hands only verified what the eyes saw, with a good waist and solid rear quarters, a dog there is obviously a lot of work put into. His coat gleaming and just enhancing his appearance, moved ok handled well

2. Fairlenium Iron King at Canistaff (Hudson Mrs SL) 06.06.21

Brindle and white male of over 3 years , another with a very strong head dark eye and nice tidy ears that he used well, short and powerful neck leading into correct shoulders , he has enough bone and enough width to his front which is clean and straight showing some forechest and ok for rib. Another lovely fit dog, front and rear angulation good , held his topline both stacked and on the move, which he excelled in, would have just preferred a bit more of him all over. Handled very well.

3. T’Blazing Star of the Warriors Red Skins (Imp Fra)

Class 7 LD (5,2)

1. Biggleswick Mr Tom (AI) (Thomas Mrs KY & Mr S) 09.02.22

Lovely deep red male with white flash to chest of over 2 years. Well defined head without exaggeration , ears ok and used well when encouraged , eyes dark enough , good skull to muzzle ratio, clean in the lip with a good underjaw and topped off with a nice dark muzzle to complete the picture. Good width to his clean and straight front showing forechest and good weight to bone with nice tidy well padded feet, correct length of neck leading into good shoulders , decent amount of rib and close coupled with good strength to his rear quarters , moved well and handled well though I do think his handler uses excessive baiting which can limit the view the judge has to his disadvantage.

2. Kirstaff The First Avenger JW (Kirk Miss G) 21.10.21

Red male of 3 years and another with a nice headpiece on him , nice dark eye and neat ears used well throughout and a good underjaw , enough bone and a clean front , good depth of brisket , a very smart dog with a decent level of fitness , ok for rib , front and rear angulations ok , nitpicking between the 2 of these but preferred the overall substance on my first place.

Clean and straight front of good width showing forechest and good bone with tidy feet , correct length of neck tapering into well laid shoulders. He is a very clean dog behind the collar and good substance for size in exceptionally fit condition, hard to the touch all over and a credit to his owner , correct depth of brisket , well off for rib and correctly coupled with good firm rear quarters, good topline stacked and on movement , which was spot on , handled well and presented in outstanding condition. Last time judged he was my RBD almost 2 years ago , maturity has served him well and this time had no hesitation in awarding him BD and BIS

2. Kamaristaffs Royal Legend – see 2nd PD

Class 9 V D/B (5,1)

Firstly just to say what an honour to judge this class of oldies, tough one for me and I don’t see that ever changing , thankyou to you all for bringing them along and great to see them all in such good spirits enjoying their time in the ring and a credit to you. Just a few words for all the veterans here and hope none of the other exhibitors object to the additional critiques

1. CH Bellarouge Adonis at Fergiestaffs JW (Mayren Mr A & Mrs L) 13.04.15

White and red male of 9 years , cracking well defined head on this one without exaggeration , lovely neat ears and a good dark eye with good underjaw and good skull to muzzle ratio. He has good bone and a lovely clean front of good width and nice tidy feet. Good amount of rib and correctly coupled . Though he is a veteran he is obviously still enjoying an active life and not consigned to the couch just yet, presented in great condition . I had to smile as I’ve had the pleasure of watching this dog from a pup and was my BOB the first time I judged. He has always excelled at being the showman and today didn’t disappoint , on his toes thoughout and having the best time , movement was one of the best on the day. I can honestly say he still has all the qualities from a youngster that gained him his title . Thankyou for another chance to go over him. BVIS

2. Fairleniums Iron Man (Fairhurst Mr S & Mrs M) 10.05.17

Mostly white male with minimal red marking of 7 years , pleasing head , neat ears and dark eye , good expression when prompted and very attentive through class , clean in the lip and presented in fit condition , clean front of good width , ok for bone and rib, light in the loin and close coupled, good front and rear angulation. Moved well out and back holding his topline , well handled , thankyou for bringing him.

3. Alport Hallo Man (Sloka Mrs V) 22.09.13

Black Brindle lad of over 11 years and seen many times in the ring , such a happy little fella of good substance , carrying a few lumps and bumps now and missing a couple of items due to a battle with cancer that I am pleased to see he won , put in a great performance on the day and moved with ease having a smashing day out with his owner and handler thankyou for bringing him along

Res Geordiestaff Luv Bobbiedog (Hall L) 10.01.12

Black Brindle sweetheart and the only Bitch in the class so duly took her place in the Bitch line up. The oldest one of the bunch at 12 years old loving her time out with the rest of her family , watched her trot up and down the mat without a care and a smile on my face , shes in great condition for her age and obviously she is not one to miss out on her walks in her twilight years a pleasure to go over and thankyou for bringing her.

Class 10 MPB (11,4)

1. Janjoma Heart and Soul at Matrixstaffs (Howard Mrs CY & Mr JS) 02.04.24

Black Brindle bitch with white speckled toes of 8 months old , an eye catching youngster , compact in size with a beautiful strong but feminine head of good well defined proportions, well set dark eyes , good cheek bumps , clean in lip and though her ears are a little high at the moment used very well to create a very endearing and “nosey”expression taking it all in and showing great confidence and ring presence. She has enough bone for size and a decent width to her clean front , rib developing well and correctly coupled with good front and rear angulation she is very clean overall and just perfect condition for her age with nothing overdone. Moved and handled well holding a decent top line , good luck with her.

2. Metalbull Black Pearl (Rochelle, Rochelle, Rochelle & Kirk Mr T, Mr L, Mr M & Miss G) 21.03.24

Black Brindle Bitch with white front and toes of 8 months and another very eye catching and pretty bitch. She has a lovely well defined and again undeniably feminine head , lovely tidy ears used well and a nice clean front of decent width , ok for rib, angulation good and correctly coupled, moved well holding her topline , well handled. Overall a little finer than the class winner and a tough choice between them both , and just coming down to minor points on the day, preferring the more compact package with a little more strength presented in my first place at this age but nothing to be taken away from this one, 2 quality bitches with a bright future and another month or 2 could create a whole different picture on placings , thankyou for bringing her.

3. Tillcarr Fire Phoenix at Troystaff (Smith & Christie-Smith Mr JF & Mrs PL ) 04.05.24

She has a lovely feminine head with strength but not overdone and ok for underjaw , dark eye and tidy enough ears create a very endearing expression , enough width to her clean and straight front with adequate bone , enough rib and correct depth of brisket, could do with a bit more width to her rear quarters being more slight in frame than the other exhibits in class though more than made up for this with her fitness and movement, correctly paced she moved up and down the mat confidently and with minimal effort and well up there with the best movers on the day holding a level topline both stacked and on the move. Handled to perfection a good team. One suggestion to her handler though would just be to try and get her revved up a little more and she is very laid back.

She has ample bone and a good width to a clean and straight front with tidy well padded feet, showing forechest , good angulation and good amount of rib for age . Her condition was ok for her age , I wouldn’t want to see any less of her and plenty of time to increase on this as she moves towards the Junior class coming into next year, a lovely topline when stacked and held well on movement which was fluent once settled.
